Philip Samartzis Melbourne, Australia, 1963. Lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
Philip Samartzis is currently co-ordinator and lecturer in Sound Art within the Media Arts course area of the School of Art & Culture, RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia), where he is also engaged in Ph.D. research on ‘surround sound’ and ‘immersive environments’ for installation-based art. Some of the outcomes of this research programme are embodied in such works as Transparence (2001), presented at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris; Soft & loud (2001), presented at the Tafe Central Gallery in Perth; and Dodg’em, a collaborative project with Martine Corompt, first prize winner of the 1999 National Digital Art Awards. In 2000, he was Visiting Professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris, lecturing in Audio-Visual concepts within the Département Informatique. In the same year he was also a visiting composer at the Showa University of Music and Arts Management in Tokyo, and IRCAM in Paris, translating ambisonic-based field recordings into Dolby digital surround sound for DVD formats. He is the co-ordinator and curator of Immersion, a biennial event devoted to exploring contemporary ssues and practices of surround sound, as well as Variable resistance, a series of international sound art events staged at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Samartzis is a composer of experimental music with a particular interest in electro-acoustic and acousmatic methodologies. As a solo artist, he has performed throughout Australia, as well as Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, France, and the United States. He has released three solo compact discs: Residue (1998), Windmills bordered by nothingness (1999) and Mort aux vache (2002). Presence and absence is the composition Samartzis has created for Upstream. He uses a range of sound recordings made in the Netherlands and in Australia that suggest their specific cultural identities. A series of digital and analogue processes are imposed on the recordings in such a way that they suggest a form of contamination, degrading and obscuring the distinct origin of the sound recordings, while a process of amalgamation situates the divergent identities into a reductive, hybridised whole. 50

Shimabuku Kobe, Japan, 1969. Lives and works in Yokohama, Japan. Shimabuku studied art at the Osaka College of Art (Japan) and the San Francisco Art Institute (USA). In most of his works, Shimabuku explores the role of communication, memory and myth in the construction of both animal and human consciousness. He likes to engage the public directly by creating interactive situations. In Disappearance and appearance of an eyebrow, Shimabuku began by shaving off one of his eyebrows in the London Underground. His unbalanced face became the catalyst for many conversations during his travels throughout Europe. His inventive, informal art practice often involves travel. On his journeys, Shimabuku studies the local history and legends, then retells true stories or makes up unrealistic and humorous stories. In 1999, he took a story he found in Fukuoka, Japan, about a 165-metre-long mermaid that washed up on the shore in 1222, and travelled with it to France, Australia, Canada and Brazil, inviting other artists to create work about the mermaid along the way to develop the story. And for a 1997 project,
In search of deer, he biked throughout a region in Japan looking for deer where none exist – as with all of his projects – involving onlookers, making friends and dispersing stories along the way. For Upstream, Shimabuku has created an installation involving homesick animals. In October 2002, he may take one of the animals to Japan by train.

In oktober 2002

Otto Sidharta Bandung, Indonesia, 1955. Lives and works in Jakarta, Indonesia. Otto Sidharta finished his post-graduate study in composition and electronic music composition at Sweelinck Conservatorium (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) under the guidance of Professor Ton de Leeuw (1926–1996). Sidharta’s interest in using environmental sounds to express his musical ideas developed when he was a student at the Jakarta Institute of Arts (Institut Kesenian Jakarta). He performed his first electronic music piece, Kemelut, based on water sounds in the First Indonesian Young Composer Festival (Pekan Komponis Indonesia) in 1979. In 1982 he collected some nature and animal sounds on Nias Island, in the Borneo (Kalimantan) jungle, and other remote places in Indonesia. These sounds were used as material for some of his works such as Ngendau, Hutan plastik and East wind. Besides being a composer, Sidharta is Chairman of both the Music Committee of Jakarta Art Council (Komite Musik Dewan Kesenian Jakarta) and Indonesian Composer’s Association (Asosiati Komponis Indonesia). He teaches at Jakarta Institute of Arts (Institut Kesenian Jakarta) and in Cantus (Music Education and Information Center, Jakarta). Furthermore, he is the Music Director for the National Symphony Orchestra (Orkes Symphony Nasional). For Upstream, Sidharta had created Wind of trade 2, a soundscape based on the sounds and voices associated with Dutch and Indonesian culture, such as sounds from nature, markets, street vendors, trains, ships and children playing.
Marcel Wierckx Winnipeg, Canada, 1970. Lives and works in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Marcel Wierckx began his formal studies in jazz improvisation, composition, and arrangement in Edmonton, Canada. After spending several years performing and recording as a popular music artist, he returned to formal studies at the University of Manitoba, where he studied electro-acoustic and instrumental composition with Michael Matthews. Later he went on to undertake post-graduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, studying composition with Alcides lanza and interactive performance systems with Zack Settel. In 1999, Marcel relocated to the Netherlands to further his research on interactive music at the Utrecht School for the Arts, where he graduated with honours in 2001. Wierckx is active as a composer of instrumental and electronic music for concerts, film, theatre and dance, and has worked with various ensembles in Canada and the Netherlands, including Groundswell, GEMS, Dansgroep Krisztina de Chatel and Made in da Shade. He composed the soundtrack for the film Tussenland (‘Sleeping Rough’), which won the Tiger Award at the 2002 Rotterdam International Film Festival. He is also active as an interaction designer and programmer; his work has been exhibited at the Arti et Amicitiae Gallery in Amsterdam and can be seen in Made in da Shade’s stage production DiggyDotCom. For Upstream, Wierckx created Zeereis (’Sea journey’). He has mixed the music that the travellers heard during their journeys on the VOC ships with the music that was in their memories of Holland. He traces a musical route along the former VOC trade route, within which the differences between Dutch culture and the cultures of the former VOC territories are investigated. At De Bazel, those visiting the exhibition determine the route of the composition: their location in the hall determines which part of the piece is played. In this way, the viewer can make his or her own journey through the composition.

Introduction. 2002 Aankoop Museum de Paviljoens, Almere
Nicky Zwaan Toma, Burkina Faso, 1971. Lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Nicky Zwaan creates installations unifying space, the public and her interventions. She uses familiar information and recognisable objects, placing them in a new perspective. Her installations sometimes include video, the monitor acting as a window behind which another, life-size reality can be seen. Her video pieces confront the public with a space they cannot access: from behind glass the installations are a beckoning space. The presence of the public is essential as it is they who bring the works to life. Zwaan’s concern is with people and human scale – she replaces the world around them by a décor rendered complete by the public’s individual perceptions of the situation. For Upstream, Zwaan’s project, Island of an Island, explores the cultural contact/cultural clash that can occur when one group’s territory is ‘invaded’ by another. The countries affected by the VOC were indeed confronted with an alien culture. When faced with new and different options, an individual can change, looking at himself or his
surroundings differently – nothing is incontrovertibly ‘true’ any longer. In Hoorn, Zwaan has created an installation to recreate this experience for the public. Her work will not be ‘ready made’ – there is no hermetic whole, no cut and dried conclusion. Throughout Zwaan’s work there is a constant theme, this installation being no exception: she creates a situation in which firmly entrenched and accepted systems within which we all behave according to cultural norms, are stretched to their limits by the aberrant behaviour of a single group. Zwaan created an ‘incognito duck army’, in a free interpretation of the situation that occurred when the VOC overran distant countries injecting their own alien customs.
Island of an Island. Installation with sound and movement 2002
