Ethernet • Souhrný název pro LAN protokoly, zahrnující specifikaci Ethernet II (DIX) a standardy v rámci IEEE 802.3 • Ethernet II (DIX) – není standardizován, de facto standard • IEEE 802.3, 802.2, 802.2 SNAP – standardizováno, ale málo používáno
• Starší verze využívaly principu CSMA/CD • Nové standardy CSMA/CD nevyužívají, max. jsou zpětně kompatibilní

Počátky Ethernetu • Na počátku byly stanice propojeny pomocí koaxiálního kabelu • Společné a všemi stanicemi proto sdílené komunikační médium
• Koaxiální kabel dovolí budovat odbočky pro přímé připojení stanic |5
Sdílený Ethernet a HUBy • Hub kopíruje (rozbočuje) přijatý signál na všechny zbývající porty • Funguje na fyzické vrstvě (bez jakékoliv logiky)
• Při použití hubů všechny stanice sdílí společnou kapacitu sítě • Stejně jako při použití koaxiálního kabelu

Kolize a kolizní doména • Kolize • Dvě stanice sdílející společnou kapacitu (propojené hubem nebo pomocí koaxiálního kabelu) začnou vysílat ve stejný okamžik (v téměř stejnou chvíli) • Odesílaná data „se na médiu srazí“ (a stanou se nečitelná)
• Kolizní doména • Skupina stanic, jejichž vzájemnou činností může dojít ke kolizi A

Kolize a kolizní doména (2) • Hub i opakovač přijatá data ihned odesílá • Není schopen data přechodně uchovat v paměti
• Hub a opakovač není schopen pozdržet odvysílání dat přes určité rozhraní a to ani v případě, že by již jiná k němu připojená stanice vysílala • Není tedy schopen zabránit kolizi • A proto všechny stanice vzájemně propojené huby nebo opakovači patří do stejné kolizní domény

Jak switch funguje? Z hlediska koncových stanic je transparentní Počítače nevědí, že komunikují přes přepínač (nebo most)
Přepínač se dynamicky učí MAC adresy stanic a vytváří si přepínací tabulku Zefektivňuje chod sítě Data určená pro známou stanici odesílá pouze na port, za kterým je stanice připojena
Data pro neznámé stanice a broadcastové či multicastové zprávy odesílá na všech porty s výjimkou toho, na kterém je přijal
