BACK STAGE ON STAGE, the presentation of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, (KABK) was a great success attracting 35.000 visitors at the renowned design fair Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Milan. This year’s edition of the Salone was held from 8 to 13 April 2014. With BACK STAGE ON STAGE The Royal Academy of Art literally put the creative process in the limelight: the presentation consisted of a continuous programme of performances and happenings, whereby drafts and products were created, shared, shown and dismantled on stage!The trans-disciplinary programme gave room to all artistic disciplines in design and fine art. The exhibition’s distinctive character was widely recognized. A record number of 35.000 visitors attended the presentation, including design critics, press and the wider international public. OnTuesday 8 April, the Dutch minister for Education, Culture and Science Jet Bussenmaker and her delegation visited the exhibition.They were guided through the show by the Academy’s director Marieke Schoenmakers and curator Claudia Linders and spoke with students and alumni. One of the exhibition’s highlights was the work by Martijn Rigters, alumnus Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. With his project CUTTING EDGE he developed a new production technique and presented his polystyrenecutted sofas. Also notable was the work BIOMIMICRY 3D PRINTED SOFT SEATING by Lilian van Daal, alumnus of Industrial Design (post graduate). She graduated with her research on 3D printed softseatig using forms and structures inspired by nature. COEXIST, a collection of autonomous architectural casts of the Academy’s building by Nynke Koster was widely noted by press, fellow designers and public. Also Catinka Kersten’s animal sculptures LOOKS LIKE I OWN YOU NOW – FOUR HARES and her performances caught the visitors’ attention.
pressrelease UK / NL The exhibition staged a daily programme of performances. Amongst them, POINTES by Ymke Vertelman, student Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. Here, two dancers playfully made music by dancing on specially designed soundbox. Designer Anouk van Klaveren’s PROJECT 000 004 HYPERTRICHOSIS 2.0 similarly had a strong performative character. Visitors could donate their hair for a growing collection hand-made bow ties. BACK STAGE ON STAGE is developed under the supervision of curator Claudia Linders and co-curators Marie Ilse Bourlanges and Elena Khurtova. The exhibition has been designed and realised by students of the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design department under the direction of Barend Koolhaas: Bert Bouwman, Marjolein de Groot, Rense Jansen, Róman Kienjet, Anne Kranenborg en Bert Spolders. De presentatie BACK STAGE ON STAGE van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, Den Haag (KABK) was met zo’n 35.000 bezoekers een groot succes op de gerenommeerde designbeurs ‘Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milan 2014’ die dit jaar van 8 tot 13 april plaatsvond. BACK STAGE ON STAGE toonde het creatieve proces letterlijk op het podium en bestond uit een doorlopend programma van performances en happenings waarin studenten en alumni van de academie ter plekke ontwerpen en producten creëerden, deelden, showden en weer ontmantelden. De transdisciplinaire performance vertegenwoordigde alle artistieke disciplines van design en beeldende kunst. Het onderscheidende karakter van de tentoonstelling bleef niet onopgemerkt. Een recordaantal van circa 35.000 bezoekers bestaande uit designcritici, pers en het grote publiek afkomstig uit alle delen van de wereld bezocht de tentoonstelling. Minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap Jet Bussemaker werd met een aantal van haar gasten op dinsdag 8 april rondgeleid door directeur Marieke Schoenmakers en curator Claudia Linders en sprak met studenten en alumni. Eén van de highlights in de tentoonstelling was het werk van alumnus Interieurarchitectuur en Meubelontwerpen Martijn Rigters die met zijn CUTTING EDGE conventionele productietechnieken opnieuw uitvindt en uit polystyreen gesneden meubels presenteerde. Daarnaast viel het werk BIOMIMICRY 3D PRINTED SOFT SEATING van Lillian van Daal, alumna Industrial Design (post graduate), op. Zij studeerde af met een onderzoek naar 3D-geprinte flexibele zitmeubels op basis van structuren uit de natuur. COEXIST, de collectie autonome en architectonische afgietsels van het academiegebouw van Nynke Koster scoorde hoog bij pers, vakgenoten en
pressrelease UK / NL publiek. Ook het in de Caldic Collectie, Wassenaar opgenomen werk LOOKS LIKE I OWN YOU NOW – FOUR HARES en de performances van Catinka Kersten trokken de aandacht. Dagelijks stonden verschillende performances op het programma, waaronder POINTES van Ymke Vertelman, studente Interieurarchitectuur en Meubelontwerpen.Twee klassieke balletdansers gaan de dialoog aan door te dansen met metalen spietsen op speciaal ontworpen klankkasten. Ook PROJECT 000 004 HYPERTRICHOSIS 2.0 van ontwerpster Anouk van Klaveren had een sterk performatief karakter. Hier konden bezoekers hun haar doneren voor een groeiende collectie handgemaakte vlinderdassen.
