Introduction
The diploma thesis deals with the translation of the first three chapters of Irvine Welsh‘s latest novel Crime and analysis of syntactic aspects of translation. There are a number of reasons for choosing this topic. Firstly, literature has always been in the scope of my interest, but unfortunately, my studies at the university and my work have taken most of my time. Therefore, the thesis was as an opportunity to deal with literature in more detail and to perceive it from a new perspective. Secondly, as my bachelor thesis dealt with methods, approaches and techniques suitable for interactive whiteboards, I have decided to take advantage of the second opportunity for trying something distinct, something I have never experienced before. Thirdly, it seemed to be challenging to discover how difficult the work of translators really is, and what possibilities they have to overcome the difficulties. Finally, I wanted to be acquainted with the theories of translation, and to realize lexical, grammatical and particularly syntactic differences between the two languages in practice, because I think that the knowledge in the area of translation is of great importance to an English teacher. Irvine Welsh belongs to my favourite authors. I have chosen his book Crime, because, as far as I know, it has not been translated so far. This fact played an important role in my decision. Welsh is considered to be the master of urban working class Scottish vernacular and he ―generally transcribes dialects phonetically, ignoring the traditional orthographic practices of written Scots‖ (―Irvine Welsh‖, Usenet FAQs). Therefore, I had expected that the main issue of my translation would be concerned with Scottish dialect, idiomatic expressions, colloquialisms, slang or vulgarisms. But the novel, and especially its first several chapters, seems to be unlike Welsh‘s earlier work, as if he would like to silence the voices of criticism concerning his narrow choice of subject matter or sameness of narrative methods. Crime is written in much more conventional style, alternating predominantingly third person present tense narrative and vivid dialogues. I decided to focus on syntactic difficulties of translation, because in the translated part of the novel there are numerous expressions, clauses and sentences that require careful approach and also knowledge of preferred syntactic structures in both English and Czech. The thesis consists of three main parts. In first four chapters, I briefly present the author of Crime, Irvine Welsh, his life and work, his style and also the novel itself. The second, practical, part presents my translation of the first three chapters of the novel. My aim was to apply the theoretical knowledge and translate the selected part of the original work into
5
a natural and fluent Czech. The third chapter is a theoretical one. It presents main syntactic problems of the translation and demonstrates how I managed to cope with them in the practical part. The emphasis is placed on syntactic distinction between the two languages resulting from their different nature.

Irvine Welsh
Irvine Welsh was born in Leith, Edinburgh, on 27 September 1958. His family moved from their tenement home in Leith, to West Pilton, and, when he was four, onto Muirhouse‘s maisonette flats. His mother worked as a waitress, his father was a dock worker then a carpet salesman, who died when Welsh was only 25 (―Irvine Welsh‖, Biographicon.com). Welsh left Ainslie Park Secondary School when he was sixteen and then he did various jobs. He worked, studied, but most of all he enjoyed punk music. He played the guitar and sang in the bands Pubic Lice and Stairway 13. He had succeeded to earn some money just as ―in the good Scots tradition, he managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory‖ (Welsh). In 1982 he realised that he had a drug problem. ‗It was around the summer of 1982 when the drug problem really impacted. It became a lifestyle rather than a recreation. When you start lying and stealing, you cannot con yourself you‘re in control any more.‘ However by the mid-80s he had cleaned himself up and became a minor property speculator, renovating houses in the rapidly gentrifying North London (―Irvine Welsh‖, Biographicon.com). When he returned to Edinburgh, he worked for the city council in the housing department. He went on to study for an MBA at Heriot Watt University. Then, in the early nineties, Welsh started to write. Trainspotting, his first and most renowned work, was first published in parts in several magazines. Although the editor believed little in its saleability, since its release in 1993 the novel has become a cult and its author has grown into a worldwide respected, but yet controversial writer. The novel has now sold almost 1 million copies in the UK alone and is known and appreciated all around the world. The stories of five heroin-addicted friends were also adapted to a stage play in 1994 by Harry Gibson and a famous film was made by Danny Boyle in 1996. The success allowed Welsh to give up his day job and devote most of his time to writing his novels, short stories collections and stage plays. Some other Welsh‘s books have also been commercially successful. Ecstasy became the first paperback original to go straight to No. 1 on the Sunday Times best-sellers list. Filth became Welsh's highest selling book after Trainspotting (Welsh). 6
Welsh is also known as the author of plays, a journalist, and a DJ. In 1994 he wrote Headstate and four years later You'll Have Had Your Hole. In 1998 Paul McGuigan directed Welsh‘s screenplay of The Acid House. His journalism included a column for Loaded magazine and occasional articles for The Guardian. He is also a DJ and has recorded a single with the rock band Primal Scream. In February 2003 he began writing a Monday column for the Daily Telegraph (Procter).

Writing style of Irvine Welsh
―When people talk of style they usually mean authorial style: in other words a way of writing which recognisably belongs to a particular writer‖ (Short 327). There are numerous distinctive stylistic features in Welsh‘s novels. He is not bound by conventions, but he creates his own unique style. His characters, predominantly Scotsmen, speak their native Scottish dialect and, in addition, Welsh often transcribes it phonetically, which significantly contributes to the authenticity of narratives, but on the other side, it may cause difficulties for non-Scotish readers and also for translators. All Welsh‘s novels share common social environment. As his novels are mainly set in lower social classes, as they are full of crime, drugs, alcohol, abuse, sex or pornography, as his typical characters are tired, unemployed young addicts or burnout, corrupt policemen, it is obvious that vulgarism and slang are another prominent feature of his style: ―— FUCK OFF, YA RADGE! STICK YIR FUCKIN JESUS UP YIR ERSE‖ (Welsh: Glue 133). However, it must be stressed that the vulgarity is used purposefully and that it is the tool, which efficiently contributes to the reality of narration. The way of speech is a significant aspect of each character, but it also develops within the story and varies according to state of mind or situation. The above mentioned fragment from Glue suggests that Welsh can also be creative in using unusual typographical means, such as various scripts, italics or block letters. Probably the most innovative element is seen in Filth, his third novel, written in 1998. The text itself is occasionally hidden behind Bruce Robertson‘s gut, and inside the gut you can read tapeworm‘s monologue addressing his host expressing its need of food: ―Eat for the Self000000eat000consume for freedom000eat…‖ (219), but later on also commenting on Robertson‘s deeds: ―All you ever wanted to do was to belong. Now Stevie is gone. You can‘t feel a think for him0000000…‖ (355). Another typical feature of his writing is the ability of smooth switching from narration to free direct thought, from present actions to flashbacks. It means that the readers must be vigilant, but on the other hand it allows them to take part in the communication among the writer, characters of the novel and the reader. Welsh does not use quotation marks. Instead he puts dashes to indicate the direct speech, which only indicates its beginning, but allows the narrator to comment the direct speech immediately after comma or other punctuation symbol: ―— This place rules, Ginger informs him‖ (Crime 32). There is an interesting distant point of
8
view in Crime: Second person narration in past tense: ―You went back to Bob Toal and asked if you could put a proper investigation team together‖ (12).

Plot summary Considering Irvine Welsh's delight in shocking readers with grotesque passages dredged from the bottom of the human psyche, readers of a more delicate disposition might quiver on hearing that his new novel deals with murder and paedophilia. But Crime is by some distance Welsh's most restrained and thoughtful work, both in terms of its relatively conventional structure and style, and in its moral centre. (Johnstone)
Welsh‘s latest novel Crime was published in 2008. The story takes us from Edinburgh to Miami. Its main character, Ray Lennox, is a thirty-five-year-old Scottish detective from Lothian Police Headquarters, who already occurred as a minor character in Welsh‘s third novel Filth. Lennox is going to have a holiday in Miami, together with Trudi, his attractive fiancée. The main reason for the holiday is a very cruel case of a child murder back in Edinburgh, the details of which are revealed in segments throughout the story. The combination of stress, alcohol, cocaine and the harrowing case is the cause of his mental collapse. Therefore, he wants to leave Scotland to forget and recover from the breakdown. There is still one more reason for the holiday: planning their wedding, but Lennox‘s mind seems to be persistently occupied by his darkest thoughts instead. The first day in Miami they meet Lennox‘s old friend and colleague Ginger and his wife Dolores. It is evident that alcohol and Ginger‘s offensive comments cannot help to remedy Lennox‘s state of mind and his relationship with Trudi. But it is only the beginning of a really shocking and desperate sequence of events. The following day Lennox and Trudi have a bitter argument, after which Lennox leaves the hotel to have some drinks. In a club he meets Robyn and Starry, who have cocaine, the one thing he needs right now. In Robyn‘s flat he finds out that she has ten-year-old daughter Tiarra. Later, two men, Lance and Johnnie, come to the flat. They all have some more drinks and cocaine, but at once they hear a child‘s choking cry. In the bedroom, Johnnie was sitting
9
on Tiarra, trying to get his hand over her mouth. After a scuffle Lennox manages to lock himself with Tiarra in the bathroom, insisting on Johnnie‘s leaving. When Lennox eventually unlocks the door, he finds out that they stay alone. In the morning there is a call from Robyn. She tells Lennox an address and asks him to take Tiarra there. From that moment he realizes that the girl is apparently a victim of abuse, that he is the only one who can help her, because he has something to do with an organized gang of paedophiles. Lennox borrows a car and takes Tiarra through Florida to the address – a harbour on the Gulf coast. He still feels guilty, as he was not able to help Britney, the girl from his last case back in Edinburgh. Therefore, saving Tiarra becomes his personal mission. Unfortunately, he finds out that the mission appears to be more dangerous than he could even imagine and that there is no one to believe; neither Tiarra‘s family nor the police…

3 Theoretical part There is an immense number of issues that could have been discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. The aim, however, was not to deal with all aspects of translation, but to focus on one domain in detail. The reason for such decision is the impossibility to examine all the problems of translation within the limited length of the thesis, though based on only three chapters of the novel. Therefore, we decided to analyse predominantingly syntactic aspects of translation, because the question of syntax had to be solved frequently in the translation, because the discussion is challenging enough, and because it partly results from the specific differences between English and Czech. The primary objective of the theoretical part is to identify selected syntactic problems of my translation, describe their theoretical principle and illustrate my solutions on a large number of examples.
3.1
Translation
Translation is the process in which a text, written in one language, is transformed into a different language. The translator aims to interpret the meaning of the original or a source text. Such description is, of course, rather superficial and inaccurate. The process of translation is much more complicated, with a considerable number of potential problems, a number of approaches and factors, which have to be taken into consideration. Dictionary of Translation studies defines translation as ―An incredibly broad notion which can be understood in many different ways. For example one may talk of translation as a process or a product, and identify such sub-types as literary translation, technical translation, subtitling and machine translation‖ (Schuttleworth and Cowie qtd. in Translation 3-4). Newmark introduces two opposite views on translation in terms of its complexity:
Common sense tells us that it ought to be simple, as one ought to be able to say something as well in one language as in another. On the other hand, you may see it as complicated, artificial and fraudulent, since by using another language you are pretending to be someone you are not. Hence in many types of text (legal, administrative, dialect, local, cultural) the temptation is to transfer as many SL (Source Language) words to the TL (Target Language) as possible. (A 73
Textbook 5) There have been many definitions of translation, written by writers, translators, linguists or critics. Norman Shapiro is convinced that a good translation is ‗invisible‘, that it should be ―so transparent that it does not seem to be translated. A good translation is like a pane of glass. You only notice that it‘s there are little imperfections – scratches, bubbles. Ideally, there shouldn‘t be any. It should never call attention to itself‖ (Shapiro qtd. in Venuti 1). It is also Newmark, who ―assumes that a translation devoted to facts and ideas, or persuading people, is mainly invisible, unless it wants to seize its readership by drawing attention to its curious syntax‖ (About Translation 34). Miššíková argues that ―the translator writes a new text when translating and thus the target text is the result of his/her choices (socio-linguistic, culture and discourse-specific considerations)‖ (39). She even thinks that there is ―no straightforward relationship between original text and translation‖ and therefore the translator should analyze, interpret and reconstruct ―the intentions of the source text‘s author‖ (38-39). Most people understand translation as the process (or its result), in which a translator‘s aim is to ―find enough corresponding features between the target and source language texts‖ (Newmark, About Translation 27). The question to consider here is: What are the features? Do we mean words, sentences, a part or the whole text? To answer the question, it would be better to introduce the term meaning, because the meaning of a clause is not a bare sum of the meaning of the words, as well as the meaning of a text is not only the sum of sentences. There are also additional meanings and implications, which are very often significant for proper translation. There are additional meanings, which, on the other hand, should be omitted. Therefore ‗good morning‘ can be translated as ‗dobré ráno‗, or ‗dobrý den‗, depending on the time or the situation in which the greeting is uttered. To conclude, it can be claimed that it is not the length of the units of language what is the most significant, but the accurate disclosure of meaning; ―transferring . . . the meaning of meaning rather than the meaning of equivalence, identity, similarity, likeness, sameness, correspondence and so on‖ stands at the beginning of a true translation (Newmark, About Translation 27). In the other words, the meaning of literary texts tends to be partly written between the lines and the translator should decipher it, consider it and use an appropriate means of expression (Miššíková 39). Knittlová brings out ―functional approach‖ as ―the basic principle of translation‖. She explains that ―it is not important whether we will use the same or different language means, 74
but if they function in the same way‖ (Překlad a překládání 7). This is in accordance with Levý‘s view. He argues that ―truthfulness of a work does not mean correspondence with reality, but description and deliverance of reality‖ (89). He also introduces two translation methods, the method of closeness and the method of freedom, where the former set the literal reproduction of the work as its goal and the later aims for ―beauty i.e. aesthetic and intellectual closeness to the reader‖ (89). Similarly, Hatim and Mason think that ―in translating, one aims not at matching speech act for speech act but rather at achieving equivalence of illocutionary structure (77).
3.2 Word order As English is an analytic language, the ability of English words to inflect is limited. While in English the noun ‗boy‘ has the same form in all cases, its Czech equivalent can take inflections ‗chlapce, chlapci, chlapče, chlapcem‘. Although Macpherson claims that its variation ―is a crucial technique for avoiding sentence monotony‖ (46), word order in English is to a great extent fixed, because it considerably determines the meaning. The basic (unmarked or neutral) order of elements in an English declarative clause follows the pattern S, P, O, C, A (Leech, Deuchar, and Hoogenraad 114). Czech language, on the other hand, uses inflections, which allows the reader or listener to comprehend the function of words without the need of fixed word order. Thus, word order in Czech clauses is available to play more roles. Knittlová notes that ―Czech, with its more flexible word order, has more possibilities for its use‖ (K teorii i praxi překladu 97, transl. by M.Š.). ―It is necessary to see word order either as a means of division of information (already known information, context information and new information) and at the same time as a means of increasing expressivity‖ (Knittlová, Překlad a překládání 264, transl. by M.Š.). Dušková adds: ―Word order in Czech is seldom a distinctive grammatical instrument. In most cases, the fixed position of some words (prepositions, conjunctions, interrogative pronouns) is only a concomitant of their syntactic function resulting primarily from their word class classification‖ (520). The distinction between the function of word order in the source and target language requires the translator to embrace the opportunity of reordering words in accordance with the nature of the target language.

3.3 Voice “Voice is a grammatical means which varies the relationship between subject and object in a verb‖ (Vogel 38). In general, two voices, active and passive are distinguished in both English and Czech. In Czech, in addition, the passive voice can be expressed either by past participle and an appropriate form of the verb be such as byl bit or by a reflexive verb, i.e. Porada se dlouho připravovala (Havránek 107). A translator should be aware of a significant dissimilarity between the application of the passive voice in English and Czech. Knittlová mentions that Czech literary fiction only uses passive voice in cases when the agent is purposely omitted. She points out that some beginning translators incorrectly translate clauses with the passive form (Překlad a překládání 123). Tárnyiková remarks that we should carefully consider whether the writer and the semantic role of the text emphasize the processes or their actors. She concretizes the above mentioned with event-oriented English version Every morning each patient was given a bed bath and had talcum powder applied to
76
pressure points and participant-oriented Czech translation, foregrounding the nurses: Každé ráno sestry pacienty umyly a zasypaly proleženiny pudrem. She introduces the term ‗zooming‘ as the possibility of translator to perceive the message from different perspective (223). Dušková explains another reason for different voice application in English and Czech:
As the passive voice allows different linear arrangement of verbal action participants than the active voice, it can be used as a means of functional sentence perspective. . . . The passive voice as a device which enables the ordination of sentence elements according the level of their communicative dynamism can correspond to active voice in Czech, because Czech achieve the same effect with mere word order variations. (263; transl. by M. Š.)
There is a notion that the passive voice is most frequently used in formal communication. Dušková is in accordance with Knittlová‘s opinion with her remark that the passive voice ―is characteristic for professional and scientific expressing, while active voice is typical of colloquial style‖ (265; transl. by M.Š.). She adds that there are also differences between types of passive voice used in different styles. In colloquial style there is occasionally the passive voice with an animate subject and an inanimate agent evoking mental states, i.e. I am disappointed translated jsem zklamán or he was confused, byl zmaten. The passive construction implied animate agent is translated into Czech by the active voice in the third person plural, which represents a universal human agent. Therefore, He was fired is translated as Vyhodili ho z práce and She is expected tomorrow as Čekají ji zítra (265).

3.4 Non-finite verb forms Regular full verbs in English have four forms – the base form, the –s form, the -ing form and the –ed form. Non-finite forms occur in clauses with both kinds of infinitive, with progressive aspects and –ing participle clauses and in clauses with –ed participle. A non-finite verb phrase contains no finite verb form. Verb phrases in continuous, perfect or passive constructions are therefore finite, because besides non-finite verbs, they also involve finite forms of the verbs to be or to have. ―Finite clauses can be either main or subordinate; nonfinite clauses are always subordinate‖ (A Students introduction to English Grammar 36). Czech language prefers finite forms. In addition, there is no gerund in Czech and present and past participles sounds unnatural or archaic. This means that the translator, aware of these differences, should, in most cases transform non-finite verb forms and use typically subordinate clause.
78
Examples of non-finite constructions in the novel:
1. They were right to care. (to-infinitive) 2. The thick, complacent studs, wearily referring to themselves as 'players' as they slowly suffocated in their own ennui. (-ing participle clause) 3. Isolated from all the other prisoners for his own safety - even the other nonces - would his arrogance have evaporated? (past participle clause)
3.4.1 Infinitive
An infinitive is a verbal consisting of the word to plus a verb (in its simplest "stem" form) and functioning as a noun, adjective, or adverb. The term verbal indicates that an infinitive, like the other two kinds of verbals, is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being. However, the infinitive may function as a subject, direct object, subject complement, adjective, or adverb in a sentence. Although an infinitive is easy to locate because of the to + verb form, deciding what function it has in a sentence can sometimes be confusing. (―Infinitives‖) Dušková writes about temporal infinitival forms. The infinitive has a present and past form and both forms can have simple, progressive and passive forms. While the present infinitive expresses contemporaneity with the act described by the definite verb, the past form is used, when the action expressed by an infinitive occurred prior to the action of a definite verb. (267).
There are two verb forms in the original complex. As the first finite past form had determines the contemporaneity with the infinitive form to make (safe), the translated finite verb form is in the past tense poskytovala:
79
For a while, the girl had the glowing pool
Na chvíli se dívenka ponořila do zářivé lázně
from the television screen to make safe the
z televizní obrazovky, jež poskytovala bezpečí
things within its field …
věcem v jejím dosahu… (p. 12)
The following sentence contains two verbs: the simple present form of the verb seem, and the perfect infinitive form to have hit. In my translation I decided to substitute the finite verb form by the adverb nejspíš and the infinitive was changed to finite past form padly (do noty).
The girls seem to have hit it off.
Holky si nejspíš padly do noty. (p. 57)
The progressive form of infinitive indicates the current continuance (Dušková 267). The progressive infinitive form to be walking in the following non-finite verb clause was substituted by finite verb and resulting finite verb clause aby chodila…. The imperfective aspect in Czech translation results from the progressive form of the infinitive: Isn’t she a little young to be walking to the
Není trochu moc malá na to, aby chodila do
school on her own?
školy sama? (p. 25)
As the system of both languages is different, there are also differences in sentence structure, which, in case of English, tends to be more condensed. One of the typical instruments of condensation is frequent usage of nominal forms. Not only has English gerund, but English nominal forms have the ability to distinguish voice, and also time relations. Czech, unlike English uses more often subordinate clauses (Dušková 542). Tárnyiková confirms the above mentioned propositions suggesting that ―the prototypical procedure in translating verbal means of condensation into Czech is the following: to rank-rise their status into that of dependent or main clauses, with occasional preferences for reciprocal means of condensation in Czech‖ (221).
80
3.4.2
Infinitive as subject
The infinitive as subject expresses an action that is evaluated or identified with another action of predicate. English clauses with verbo-nominal predicates are typically constructed with pronoun it, which anticipate the infinitival subject. While clauses with present infinitives have their Czech equivalents, clauses with past infinitives are translated by subordinate clauses (Dušková 543).
It is easy for her to relate to grace as a

3.4.3
-Ing forms
According to my experience of a beginning translator, one of the most difficult and important tasks is to respect the different syntactic structures and also the different way the two languages describe extralingual reality. While for English it is typical to ―express the nucleus of the message in the main clause, which is then circumscribed by more or less condensed appendant conditions, Czech tend to place thoughts one after another, often
81
without clear distinction. There is also tendency to express less significant ideas by subordinate clauses (in most cases with explicitly expressed conjunctions)‖ (Knittlová Překlad a překládání 124 transl. by MŠ). Tárnyiková describes the English sentence complex as being ―organized around a nuclear predication, surrounded as it were, by condensed satellites (infinitives, gerunds, participles, nominalised structures . . . and other processes contributing to compactness) (36). Knittlová also refers to Levý‘s remark that addition of conjuncts may lead to higher cohesion and possibly to unintended logicality (Překlad a překládání 124). -Ing forms belong, together with infinitives and past participles, to non-finite verbal forms. According to Tárnyiková, they ―represent the core means of complex condensation‖ (216). There are numerous examples of these participial forms in the first three chapters of the novel. In some cases they ―are difficult to interpret in translating from English to Czech, since their transformation into finite clauses (typical of the Czech solutions) requires the explication of various ―hidden‖ semantic relations‖ (Tárnyiková 216). Here is also a potential problem mentioned by Knittlová that addition of conjuncts sometimes conduce to higher cohesion and possibly to unintended logicality (124). One of several solutions is the infinitive, but there is still possible movement towards ―depersonalized generality‖ (Tárnyiková 217). The examples of translation sentences with –ing forms by means of infinitives:
Then she could hear the wind twisting and

The general tendency in Czech is to substitute the English condensers by clauses. This can result in the re-structuring of original sentence pattern: The girl turned the handset volume up as the S tím, jak bouřka stupňovala svou zuřivost a tempest raged on, the wind and rain

3.5 Functional sentence perspective According to Newmark, ―the arrangement of the elements of a sentence in the light of its linguistic, situational and cultural context, determining its function within the paragraph and the text‖, is ―intimately related to translation problems‖ (61). Hatim and Mason present the view of Firbas and other Prague linguists on ―theme and rheme as ‗what the sentence is about‘ and ‗what is said about it‘ respectively‖ (213). ―The communicative needs of the speaker are satisfied through a twofold process: elements of thought – reflecting the extralinguistic reality, concrete or abstract – are denominated by naming units, which are combined to produce sentences. The former process consists in selecting – or if need be, in coining – naming units; . . . the latter consists in syntactic structuration‖ (Firbas). Dušková defines functional sentence perspective as the distribution of communicative dynamism levels to particular sentence elements. The realization of FSP is accomplished by a variety of syntactic and semantic means, particularly by word order, semantic structure of the clause, semantics of clause elements and word classes, context and intonation (528). To sum up, the theory is connected particularly with communication and the way how a language uses its system in order to achieve the intended communicative effect. Adam explains that ―it explores how a piece of information is produced in the act of communication, and also how different elements are given different communicative prominence‖ (17). There are significant differences between the realizations of FSP in English and Czech. While in Czech there is a tendency to line clause elements according to their communicative dynamism, the same is often more problematic in English, because of its grammatical sentence structure (Dušková 528).
85
Let me now draw attention to the cases in which the realization of FSP differs in English and Czech. While the English sentence Tom broke a window with a stone, corresponds to Czech translation Tom rozbil okno kamenem, using of definite tool causes its moving backwards in Czech. Therefore Tom broke a window with the stone is in accordance with Czech translation Tom rozbil kamenem okno. The following examples illustrate that while the English rhematic subject is indicated by its singular indefinite determination, Czech translations realize the same effect by the means of word order (Dušková 529).
The following examples illustrate situations in which the word order in my translation remains unchanged:
He puts it down and catlicks himself,
Položí jej, olízne se a utře ubrouskem.
mopping up with a napkin.
(p. 31)
Like she’d branded him with a heated iron.
Jako by mu vypálila znamení rozpálenou žehličkou. (p. 44)
The examples below illustrate the translation with different word order. The reason is different realization of functional sentence perspective in the two languages. Adam explains that ―in Czech, the FSP linearity principle represents the leading power governing the syntax of sentences: the further an element is in the sentence the more prominence it carries‖ (23). Therefore, in the translation it was necessary to postpone the indefinite (rhematic) subjects from their initial position in English to the final position in Czech: A gloopy vodka and tomato mix slops over his Na nezraněnou levou paži mu vycákne undamaged left hand.
lepkavá vodka s rajčatovou šťávou. (p. 31)
An ember of anger glows in his chest.

pramínek vzduchu, … (p. 14)
A tremor of excitement passes through him as Při očekávání její velkoleposti jím otřese he awaits its grandeur.
záchvěv vzrušení. (p. 33)
Functional sentence perspective is also affected by lexical and semantic nature of the verb. The verbs expressing appearance at the stage take rhematic contextually uninvolved subject, e.g. A helicopter hovered over the lake. Nad jezerem se vznášela helikoptéra (Dušková 531).
Examples of sentences with the verbs of appearance at the stage: Salsa and mambo music fills the air, …

As he chops at nails already close to the quick, Když si odstříhává nehty, už skoro na živé voices fill the room.
maso, zaplní místnost hlasy. (p. 36)
87
These adverbials can either function as a mere scene of verbal action, or they can specify it. If the former is the case, then they belong to the thematic part of the clause and if they specify the action they belong to the rheme. For example in traffic keeps to the left in England the adverbial in England belongs to the theme. Therefore, it should be translated with respect to Czech theme-rheme realization as v Anglii se jezdí vlevo. The adverbial in the sentence I met him in England, on the contrary, pertain to the rhematic part resulting in Czech counterpart seznámil jsem se s ním v Anglii (Dušková 533).

Trudi has a blanket over her legs.
Trudi má přes nohy šátek. (p. 17)
Quantifiers are often considered as a part of rheme, as they often hold a high level of communicative dynamism:

enticingly outside her panties.
kroutilo několik chloupků. (p. 37)

3.6 Existential there as subject In English, the subject of a declarative clause must be expressed and, at the same time, its position is, to a great extent, fixed before the predicator. One of the possibilities how to achieve post-verbal position of the subject is its substitution by ‗dummy‘ subject there, which allows the subject to move behind the verb. The subject, being postponed within the sentence to its rhematic part, takes higher communicative prominence (Dušková). In other words, ―the construction thus fits in better with the general tendency for new material to be introduced later rather than earlier within the linear progression of a clause (Huddleston 468).
Three main sentence-types with the subject expressed by there are distinguished:
a) Existential type The verb be can be substituted by the verb exist. The existential type without there is impossible: *Are many problems or *Many problems are. In Czech, existential clauses have only one subject accordant with the English proper subject, e.g. There is no correct answer. Není žádná správná odpověď.
b) Existential-locative type This type has an obligatory locative complement expressed either at the beginning or at the end of the clause, e. g. There were a lot of Jewish people in Miami or In Miami there were a lot of Jewish people. The two types are semantically analogical. The translation corresponds with the intention to postpone the new information to the end of the clause, e. g. V Miami byly spousty Židů
89
c) Scenic type Scenic type involves a verbal noun, which acts as the proper subject. The typical examples of this type are atmospheric or perceptional processes, e.g. there was a gust of wind, or there was a smell of damp leaves. Clauses of this type should be translated by verbonominal clauses, e. g. zaburácel vítr or bylo cítit vlhké listí (Dušková 354-355). But as morning rolled into afternoon there Avšak ani když se dopoledne přehouplo was no news.

90

městě. (p. 40)
3.7 There as adverbial In this case the adverb there functions as adverbial. It means that it also have to be translated. In the example below it is translated by the adverb tu.
There are two bedrooms, both with en suite
Jsou tu ještě dvě ložnice, každá s koupelnou a
facilities, in addition to another, larger
navíc ještě jedna větší koupelna. (p. 54)
bathroom.
3.8 Ramification Ramification of communicative lines describes the situation in which a clause is interrupted by the insertion of another clause or a part of a clause. It is often the case that a ramified clause has its two parts located in the initial and final positions and ramifying elements are inserted. The resulting structure creates a communicative tension, with the second part of the ramified clause being emphasized. The most important aspect of stylistic expressiveness is the length of the ramifying part. While the long or multiple inserted parts significantly contribute to the stylistic effect, ramification with shorter parenthetical elements is stylistically much less relevant (Tárnyiková 194). Another example of ramification is ―a sequence of clauses in which, due to the absence of explicit grammatical signals of syntagmatic relations, it is often demanding to piece the isolated parts together and interpret the whole‖ (Tárnyiková 194). It can be difficult to translate ramified sentences, because it is seldom possible to copy the original English structure. One of the problems is, as mentioned above, the absence of conjunctions and other signals of syntagmatic relations. Often the sentence has to be analysed carefully in order to find the borders of ramified clauses and to detect implicit relations within the clauses. The translator then makes a decision on necessary transformation. The scale of the options and solutions includes copying the original sentence complex on its one side, and neutralization of the effect of ramification on the opposite end. There is apparently no universal imperative for the translator to follow. Therefore, we translated each ramified
91
sentence in consideration of its complexity, the writer‘s intention, structural nature of the languages and fluency of the resulting solution.
Here, we decided to disrupt the ramified structure into three sentences:
She prayed it would be one set of footsteps,
Modlila se, aby to byly jen jedny kroky. Ty
his were always so soft, he never wore
jeho byly vždycky tak měkké, protože nenosil
anything but sneakers, but then she heard the nic jiného než tenisky. Pak ale uslyšela hlasy voices and the muffled laughter.
a tlumený smích. (p. 13)
In the following example, the base of English construction was used in the translation, but yet some necessary modifications had to be done. The non-finite clause rising…was translated by the finite verb form když zvedne…, the word order in the ramifying part was rearranged, the verb-form being badly set was nominalised into zanedbaném ošetření, and also past participles reflected and provided were translated by the reflexive verb odráží se and the modal form má poskytnout. Raising a bandaged right hand to his hooked Když zvedne ovázanou ruku k orlímu nosu, nose, slightly askew after being badly set který má mírně vychýlený po zlomenině před following a break some years back, he looks pár lety a následně zanedbaném ošetření, at his image reflected in the blank screen of zahlédne svůj obraz, jak se odráží v obrazovce the personal television, provided for his in- osobní televize, jež mu má poskytnout zábavu flight entertainment
během letu. (p. 14)
Here, the communicative line of the first clause was interrupted by the information specifying Ray‘s appearance. The inserted part was transparently separated by dashes. Except for some necessary changes within the ramifying part (to reveal – aby odhalil), the original sentence structure was copied. And Ray Lennox – gaunt, white-faced, clean-

se čelo – cítí jak se jeho puls prudce zrychluje. (p. 15)
3.9 Nominalisation Huddleston describes nominalisation as ―a grammatical process resulting in forms bearing some resemblance to nouns or noun phrases‖ (325). Both English and Czech use nomisalisation as a means by which it is possible to achieve compactness. The result of nominalisation is a verbal noun, which can function as subject, object or nominal part of the predicate. There are more situations possible in the process of translation: Either there is ing-verbal noun in English is translated in a similar way or nominalisation is used where English uses a condenser or a dependent clause (Tárnyiková 215). The most typical is the combination of a relatively vague verb and a noun which holds the main semantic gravity, e.g. have a rest. These expressions are translated mainly by semantically rich verbs. This practice ―corresponds to the analytical nature of English compared to the preferred synthetic shaping of the predications in Czech‖ (Tárnyiková 224).

The following examples of my translation represent the cases in which verbo-nominal English forms were translated by means of verbal forms:

The noun phrase an alert call functioning as the subject of the passive verb form was made in the original text was expressed by the semantically rich verb form upozornili jsme and, in addition, the active voice was used in Czech: An alert call was made to all cars…
Upozornili jsme všechny vozy… (p. 26)
In the following example, I decided to keep the nominal character of my translation. It seems to be more natural than any verbal expressions (…kašlavě ses omlouval/...omlouval ses rozkašlaně). I also decided to use more natural Czech expression vysoukal, instead of literal translation: When you got there, you’d coughed out an

hlasem, něco mezi přáním a prosbou. (p. 12)
Occasionally, it is possible to translate English finite verb forms by nominal means:
The torment of uncertainty, where the heart

telefonu. (p. 29)
3.10 Juxtaposition
Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary defines juxtaposition as ―the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side, and also the state of being so placed‖ In the field of syntax, juxtaposition describes situations in which two clauses are joined together by means of commas, semicolons or colons, without the use of coordinating or subordinating conjunctions (―Complement Control‖).
95
This example illustrates juxtaposition of clauses connected by semicolon. In the translation it was substituted by more explicit syndetic connection, revealing their semantic relationship:
One hand checks the seat belt; the other, Jedna ruka zkontroluje bezpečnostní pás, white-knuckled, grasps the exit strap above zatímco druhá křečovitě svírá držadlo nade dveřmi. (p. 53)
the door.
Here, the semicolon is converted into comma, which represents more common means of connection in Czech. Even though there are more possible solutions, such as dividing the complex into two sentences …ztuhne. Je toporný všude… We aimed to retain the verb ztuhne and the resulting adjective toporný in one clause complex. Lennox freezes; stiff everywhere but where she Lennox ztuhne, celý toporný, jen ne tam, kde by to chtěla ona. (p. 60)
wants him.
Another source of difficulties might be juxtaposed clauses of the type ‗This is the man I saw yesterday‘, non-existent in Czech, whose status can be difficult to identify (at last on the first reading), since there is no punctuation support helping to identify them as separate clauses. Prototypically, the juxtaposed English clauses are turned into syndetically linked clauses in Czech, i.e. clauses with more explicit marking of their semantic relationship to the rest of the sentence complex. (Tárnyiková 197) Leech, Deuchar and Hoogenraad talk about ‗ghost‘ expressions, which are not ‗physically‘ present in a sentence, but all the same, everybody understands them as its indispensable elements. Such situation results from a rule of relative pronoun omission, asserting that ―a relative pronoun preceding the subject can be omitted‖ (116).
This example presents juxtaposition of the main clause I think and the subordinate nominal (object) clause it’s great. While the original text can omit the coordinator, it is not possible in translation: 96
I think it’s great.
Já si myslim, že je to báječný. (p. 43)
In the example below, more explicit semantic relationship in Czech translation is achieved by the comma and conjunction že.
I think Mandy Devlin and her boyfriend
Myslím, že Mandy Devlinová a její přítel by
should be at the evening do, rather than the
měli být na tom večerním mejdanu, spíše
church and the meal…
než v kostele a u večeře… (p. 46)
Here the verb of juxtaposed object clause Rough Guide mentioned is complemented by another object clause there were a lot of Jewish people in Miami. The intention was to avoid repetition of conjunction že (…myslim, že…/zmiňuje o tom, že…). In order to achieve it, the main clause I think was replaced by a short insertion pokud vím.
Besides, I think the Rough Guide mentioned
A navíc, průvodce Rough Guide, pokud vím,
that there were a lot of Jewish people in
zmiňuje, že v Miami jsou spousty Židů. (p. 40)
Miami.
The following example presents a different type of subordination. The head of the noun phrase agents is post-modified by the relative clause they use without comma or a relative pronoun. This kind of clause is called a zero relative clause. In Czech, however, relative pronouns are obligatory constituents of relative clauses. It’s probably the cleaning agents they use.
Bude to asi těmi čistícími prostředky, které tu používají. (p. 56)
If juxtaposition co-occurs with means of condensation, the sentence structure is even less explicit. Non-finite -ing noun clause watching my weight is translated by the finite nominal clause abych si hlídal váhu.
She wants me watching my weight.
Chce, abych si hlídal váhu. (p. 59)
97
3.11 Chopping Chopping English sentences into shorter units in Czech appears to be a frequent practice of translators who attempt to shorten long sentence complexes in order to make them more semantically transparent. This quantitative transformation is, however, not infrequently followed by qualitative changes, considering tendency for English to use various means of condensation, and for Czech to prefer finite clauses (Tárnyiková 206). While ―with larger complexes the reasons for chopping in Czech are primarily quantitative: to alleviate the burden of long complexes into smaller units‖, another reason can be the fact that the ―chopped (isolated) unit opens up space for emphasis, with the isolated predication being like a played-out predication, hence more focal‖ (Tárnyiková 207).
The relatively loose connection expressed by a semi-colon is one of the optimal possibilities for chopping. The Czech solution involves, among others, transformation change of the passive voice it was broken and a sequence of non-finite verb forms spreading / creeping to the active voice paprskům stály v cestě and the reflexive verb form rozprostíraly se. It was broken only by the limbs of the dead oak Paprskům stály v cestě jen větve odumřelého tree in the yard outside; spreading keen
dubu venku ve dvoře. Jejich ostré, rozeklané
varicose shadows, creeping across the walls,
stíny, temné a živoucí, se rozprostíraly po
dark and vital.
stěnách. (p. 11)
As the occurrence of semi-colon in Czech literature is somewhat rare, I found chopping to be one of the suitable options. Again, more modifications have to be done in order to respect the conventions of the target language. Therefore, the post-modifier in Trudi, his fiancée becomes pre-modifier jeho snoubenka Trudi; the past participle tinted is nominalised into the noun přelivem and the present participle indicating takes the finite verb form dávají najevo:
98
It’s Trudi, his fiancée; shoulder-length hair
Je to jeho snoubenka Trudi. Vlasy na ramena,
tinted a tasteful honey blonde indicating the
s elegantním přelivem medové barvy, dávají
attentions of a proper stylist.
najevo náležitou péči kadeřnice. (p. 14)
The English ramified clause complex with an insertion, divided by dashes, is superseded. In the longer part, the word order is modified and the dash is replaced by the conjunction a. The result is the division into two separate sentences, with more emphasis on the question Vyprchala už jeho arogance:

The original complex contains several condensers in the form of infinitive and it appears to be slightly non-transparent. By chopping and changing the verb forms I tried to achieve transparency and more natural flow of language:
She used to like to watch Momma fix herself
Dříve se ráda dívala, jak se její máma

upravuje. Byla tak půvabná, když se

The English sentence contains several post-modifiers of the head noun Trudi. I decided to translate it as two sentences and change the non-finite verb form rising into the past form zvedne:
He watches Trudi, unperturbed, small
Pozoruje Trudi. Klidnou, s malou šarlatovou
scarlet slash of a mouth, only briefly
štěrbinou úst, jak jen krátce, přezíravě zvedne
raising a thinly plucked brow in disdain.
tence vytrhané obočí. (p. 17)

Conclusion
This diploma thesis presents my translation of the first three chapters of the novel Crime, written by Irvine Welsh. The book has not been translated into Czech yet. The aim was not to come up with a professional translation, but there was a slightly selfish objective to experience the work of a translator and see how a translated book rises from the original. For me it was a great opportunity and a very interesting practice. As a student and a teacher, translation has been my everyday business, but never before have I taken it as seriously as now. The language of the novel does not seem to be as difficult as Welsh‘s previous works. Yet, the process of translation was far from effortless. In the thesis, I decided to focus on syntactic problems of translation, because this issue seems to be, in some respect, marginalized in both translation literature and final thesis. Knittlová‘s Překlad a překládání, for instance, deals with syntax in only two pages. Therefore, it should be acknowledged that Tárnyiková partly attempted at filling the gap with her book Sentence Complexes in Text. Another important source of theoretical knowledge was Dušková‘s Mluvnice současné angličtiny na pozadí češtiny. Although the theoretical part deals primarily with syntactic issues of translation, it does not mean that other aspects of translation - lexical, semantic, pragmatic, grammatical or cultural - were disregarded in the practical part. To mention just one example, the language of the novel involves a variety of dialects, from almost literary language of the narrator at one side to non-standard forms including vulgarisms and taboo words on the other side. Therefore I tried to identify the position of an utterance within the scale and use the most appropriate translation with regard to context and pragmatic perspective. This seems to be one of the most difficult, but also interesting and important aspects of translating. It is difficult, because it seems to be rarely possible to use equivalent lexis in order to achieve congruous effect, it is interesting, because it requires not only theoretical knowledge, but also imagination and empathy, and it is important, because it significantly contributes to likelihood of the resulting translation. I spent almost one year working on the thesis and I am happy to say that the time was not pointless. With the help of my supervisor, I had the opportunity to acquaint with a number
100
of authors and their views on translation. I had the opportunity to realize that the knowledge of translation theories and methods is a prerequisite for an accurate translation. I have also learned how difficult and unrewarding the work of a translator really is. Despite the fact that the whole novel has not been translated yet, I do not dare to say that my translation is intended as a groundwork for a professional translation of the whole book. I also do not dare to claim that I managed to solve all the translational problems accurately. Nevertheless, I hope that I managed to contribute to the scope of translation studies with my translation and its analysis seen from the view of functional syntax.

Anotace Stěţejní částí diplomové práce je překlad tří úvodních kapitol románu Crime skotského spisovatele Irvina Welshe z anglického originálu do českého jazyka a následný rozbor překladatelských problémů z pohledu funkční syntaxe. Jednotlivé oblasti jsou nejprve teoreticky popsány a poté dány do kontextu s vlastním překladem. Součástí teoretické části je mnoţství příkladů vlastního překladatelského řešení, které prezentují uplatnění teoretických poznatků v překladatelské práci.
Annotation The main part of the diploma thesis consists of a translation of the first three chapters of a novel Crime written by the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh from the English original into Czech. The translation is followed by the analysis of syntactic aspects of translation. Each problem area is first described theoretically, before it is given in context of the translation. There are also numerous examples of my own translation, which illustrate how theoretical knowledge was used.
