Kegiatan 5―Berbicara In this cartoon, Pak Bei is faced with a dilemma. Explain his predicament in Indonesian, using your own words. Retell the plot as if you were relaying what happened on your favourite TV show to a friend.
Kegiatan 6―Tata Bahasa: Kata Majemuk A compound (kata majemuk) is a combination of two simple words which together form a complex word. Thus kambing ‘goat’ and hitam ‘black’ combine in the compound kambing hitam ‘scapegoat’. Some compounds are written as two words, while other are hyphenated or written as one word, such as tandatangan ‘signature’. Indonesian uses many compounds in a number of ways. They may consists of two words in which each word has a meaning. But in other cases, the second word cannot be used by itself. Thus mayur in sayur-mayur does not have a meaning by itself. It only exists in the compound sayur-mayur. The difference between sayur and mayur is that the first consonant is changed from s to m. This is called imitative reduplication (see Sneddon’s Grammar 1.27).
4
Pak Bei 16 Imitative reduplication has many forms. Sometimes a consonant differs, in other cases one vowel is different, or two vowels are different, or a vowel and a consonant is different. It is even possible that the two parts can have different numbers of syllables. Look at the following examples of common compounds: sayur-mayur lauk-pauk ramah-tamah desas-desus gerak-gerik lalu-lalang bolak-balik asal-usul teka-teki
vegetables (from sayur ‘vegetable’} side dishes (from lauk ‘side dish’) ‘hospitable and friendly’ (from ramah ‘friendly’) ‘rumour’ ‘movements, gestures’ (from gerak ‘movement’) ‘to pass by frequently’ (from lalu ‘pass through’ ‘to and fro’ (from balik ‘return’) ‘origin, descent, very beginning’ (from asal ‘origin’) ‘riddle’
Compounds are especially popular with adjectives. The meaning of sunyi is ‘lonely, quiet’, but in the compound sunyi-senyap ‘death still’ the meaning is much more intense. The same is the case in the following examples. Basah kuyup Kering kerontang Kusut masai Kelap kelip Terang benderang Gelap gulita Kacau balau Kaya raya Hancur lebur
completely wet, soaked extremely dry messy, tangled twinkling extremely bright pitch dark chaotic wealthy crushed down
