LESSON 7 - ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT 1. Such a change in the organisation of that research institute would provide a further considerable advantage. The present organisational science treats a company as an inter-reacting complex and not as a collection of unrelated units. A sound organisational structure is the basis for effective managerial control. An organisation diagram should show besides basic relationships and authority the spots with weak definite control. The purpose of the reorganisation was to increase the production and the quality of the products. 2. The Stanley Works comprises three main sections covering an area of 20,000 sq. m. The steel mill ought to be provided with the best up-to-date machinery. The Product Division handles all orders, design of installation and service, while the Technical Division provides technical services to all other divisions as well as to the Sales Department. Large sections headed by section managers are divided into groups headed by supervising engineers. The machine factory had well equipped departments for the manufacture of byproducts. The oil storage facilities are far apart. The goods have been stored at the warehouse for a long time. 3. Management is a mixture of creative and supervisory activities. Wage and salary administration is one of the major responsibilities of modern manpower management. When faced with the task of training people for more responsible positions the manager realized the importance of ability to handle people. Progressive firms never overlook the importance of human relations. Men and women at work want recognition, fair pay, good working conditions, agreeable supervisors, important duties, and a chance to advance. Training others gives you a chance to pass your experience to others for the ultimate benefit of the company. A 3
manager’s job is to make the right decisions and not to spend time sitting in the office. The decisions of a group of executives are recorded and communicated to others in writing. The secret of giving effective orders is to build enthusiasm in the people receiving them. Under certain conditions the staff specialist may issue direct orders ether in his own name or in that of his superior or chief executive. Experienced managers are constantly analysing, judging and evaluating the business situation. A manager usually spends his mornings reading mail and making and receiving telephone calls. An efficient secretary should relieve a manager of everyday routine work. Most engineers think sooner or later of switching from technical work to a managerial position. The aim of committee work is to get a more comprehensive view of a given problem than can be obtained from any single member. The proper size of a factory committee needs to be determined. In the afternoon the manager has business meetings with other members of the management staff. When you hold the next staff meeting, plan to give its participants plenty of opportunity to discuss, argue and put forward ideas. All the members of a team should have clear roles and areas, all their efforts being directed towards common team objectives. 4. Non-supervisory men are classified in rank from the lowest to the highest as junior, intermediate, and senior engineers. The managing director dictates letters to his secretary and if he has time he reads all the reports that came in with the morning mail. The works manager is given a planned objective for the coming couple of years, specifying the output needed from his plant. The responsibilities of an executive are always greater than his capacity to carry them out. The young executive tries hard to get raises for his efficient subordinates. Every responsible supervisor must learn to think while listening to other workers. 5. Workers and foremen alike frequently hesitate to criticize existing conditions for fear of job security. The head of the planning department has recently been appointed a chief engineer. A currently disregarded old rule is that one man should boss no more than five subordinates. An executive assured his subordinates that they may come in at any time to discuss a problem or a grievance. Most companies draw sharp distinction between engineers and supporting personnel such as administrative and clerical staff. A central R&D unit is available to all departments, but a large share of research is done by each department as well.
