ABSTRACT
This study is focusing on Sociolinguistics. Problem formulations in this study are: (1) what names are adopted by Chinese – Indonesian people at the Faculty of Letters UNIKA Soegijapranata and (2) why do Chinese - Indonesian people at the Faculty of Letters UNIKA Soegijapranata adopt the names they use. This study focuses on language and identity, and the scope of the study is limited to analyzing what names Chinese – Indonesian people adopt and the reasons why they adopt the names. The aim of this study is to find out the names that adopted by Chinese – Indonesian students’ parents at the Faculty of Letters UNIKA Soegijapranata and to find out the reasons for Chinese – Indonesian students’ parents at the Faculty of Letters UNIKA Soegijapranata adopt the names they use. This study uses qualitative method which deals with observation, interview and questionnaire to answer the problem formulations. The result of this research shows that the name that is mostly adopted by Chinese – Indonesian people at the Faculty of Letters UNIKA Soegijapranata is Indonesian names only and the reasons that are mostly chosen by the majority of the participants (83.6%) is related to law issue. There is only a small number of the participants (11.9%) who chooses the reasons that are related to religion issue.

ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini memiliki fokus pada sosiolinguistik. Perumusan masalahnya adalah: (1) nama apa yang diadopsi oleh orang Cina-Indonesia pada Fakultas Sastra UNIKA Soegijapranata dan (2) mengapa orang Tionghoa - Indonesia di Fakultas Sastra UNIKA Soegijapranata mengadopsi nama yang mereka gunakan. Penelitian ini memiliki fokus pada bahasa dan identitas, dan terbatas pada masalah penganalisaan tentang nama yang diadopsi oleh orang Tionghoa - Indonesia dan alasan mereka mengadopsi nama gunakan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui nama yang diadopsi oleh orang tua mahasiswa Tionghoa - Indonesia di Fakultas Sastra UNIKA Soegijapranata dan mengetahui alasan mengapa orang tua mahasiswa Tionghoa - Indonesia di Fakultas Sastra UNIKA Soegijapranata mengadopsi nama yang mereka gunakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif yang menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner untuk menjawab rumus permasalahan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nama yang banyak diadopsi oleh sebagian besar orang Tionghoa - Indonesia pada Fakultas Sastra UNIKA Soegijapranata adalah nama Indonesia saja dan alasan yang banyak dipilih oleh sebagian besar dari peserta penelitian (83.6%) adalah berhubungan dengan hal hukum.Hanya sebagian kecil dari mereka (11.9%) yang memilih alasan yang berhubungan dengan hal keagamaan.
