MAGAZIN 1. David OTT

An Exchange of Blood Gábor TOMPA talks about the UTE and the festival The 17th UTE Festival began here in Cluj with a production of Ionesco’s Amédée from the French Compagnie Roger Planchon and there will be several other guest performances over the next few weeks. How are the performances selected? In the case of the UTE Festival, it’s a bit more complicated, than, let’s say, a regular festival. Last year for the Interferences Festival it was easier because we chose whatever we wanted for those ten days – ten days, ten different productions. Usually the tradition of the Union of the Theatres of Europe is that 90% of the productions included in the festival are from member theatres. And there are personal members of the Union, and they may also present a production with a different company. Then, there are some exceptional cases when the Union, the Board of Directors or the General Assembly, decide that there is an exciting production from outside the Union without any connection to the membership, and they, or we – I have to say “we” now – we invite such a production. In our case this year, it’s a kind of mixture of all of these elements. Normally, also, it’s not only the organisers who are choosing the plays – the member theatres are proposing what they might present. Sometimes a member theatre is making a couple of proposals, and it depends very much on how these fit in the structure of the whole festival, and at the same time, how they can be done technically and economically. There is a certain amount of money given to a company for each show and from this amount they have to take care of their travel, the transportation of the sets, etc. This is a fixed amount which only in very exceptional cases can be increased. So because this is not a very wealthy festival, some great productions with a large number of participants cannot be invited; this has been the case for many years with the large casts of the Royal Shakespeare Company productions.
2
This year is the year of the Renaissance in Europe and in Cluj and we had wanted to organise the festival around this idea, but in the end there are not that many productions based on texts from the Renaissance. There are some Shakespeare productions
– we are opening Richard III on November 19th, there is a Merchant of Venice which is a very interesting production of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre directed by Egon Savin, and there will be a production of the Bulandra Theatre that is an adaptation of Shakespeare by Heiner Müller titled Anatomy Titus Fall of Rome. But there are other productions which don’t really have much to do with this Renaissance idea. There are contemporary plays such as Ella by Herbert Achternbusch; there are different classical plays from the 19th or 20th century, including two by Chekhov, Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters. And there is a second play, Quartett, by Heiner Müller who is already considered a classical playwright just ten years after his death. So finally this festival is not really around the topic but it is still the Renaissance year, and maybe this edition could mean in the life of our city and in the life of the Union as well, a kind of renaissance. How does a theatre become a member of the UTE? Well, this year has been a very important turning point for the UTE because for four or five years no new members were accepted in the Union. It had become a kind of closed structure. Giorgio Strehler, who created this Union, had the idea from the very beginning of being open towards countries that were still a long way from being members of the European community. That was a great thing, because politically the UTE anticipated what was to happen later. So they allowed members from Hungary, Romania, Russia, Poland, and even Greece, countries which were not part of the European Union, and it happened only years later that these countries were accepted [in the European Union]. The same thing seems to be on the schedule for the future. We will be speaking at the General Assembly which this year will take place here in Cluj, probably in midDecember, about an opening towards the countries to the south. There is already now a member theatre from Israel, the Habimah National Theatre, and there is a rising Palestinian company which might be accepted into the Union, which is a huge political issue. At the same time, we shouldn’t forget that the aesthetic quality is very, very important, at the top of the considerations for
acceptance into the Union, and of course the commitment of every member theatre to focus a big part of their work on co-productions, international cooperative projects and artistic exchanges. This festival is being cohosted with the Bulandra Theatre in Bucharest. Do you feel that the programs in Cluj and Bucharest complement one another? Yes, it is a co-organised event with Bulandra, because certain productions will be in both cities, but at the same time, it can be considered as two separate events, because we have separate budgets. In fact, the Bucharest festival has a much bigger budget and so can invite more productions. Originally, we and Bulandra had planned to do a common catalogue, an album, but finally each theatre is doing its own version because we didn’t have time to wait for all the materials from all the
different participating companies to arrive. There were also some differences regarding how many languages should be represented. While Bulandra’s catalogue is in Romanian and French, we decided to do ours in Romanian, Hungarian, English and French. But yes, I think the two city’s versions somehow complement each other because there are some productions coming only to Bucharest or only to Cluj. This means, too, that at certain times during the festival we can attract people from Bucharest. This is certainly the case with Ella, a performance which will also mark the opening of the new studio space in our theatre. And it is the case with Matthias Langhoff’s production based on Lautréamont, God as Patient, and, of course, it is the case with some of our own productions which we won’t be bringing to Bucharest. Uncle Vanya was there for the beginning of the festival, we
are going to present Richard III in December and, if the space is adequate and we are not obliged to make too many compromises, then there’s a great expectation of having Gianni Schicchi in Bucharest also. But there are other productions such as The Hunting Party, Woyzeck, Three Sisters, and Long Friday still in our autumn repertory that are only presented in Cluj. So from this point of view they are complementary festivals, but as an experience, it’s been hard to organise it as such, especially with the 465 kilometres between Cluj and Bucharest. The festival was coorganised one year by Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, but that was only a week long and much smaller in scale. Would you characterise the Cluj audience and the Bucharest audience as being quite different?

reception of a specific theatrical language was very open in Bucharest, but it wasn’t so much here in Cluj. So, I realised that one of my greatest tasks in assuming the directorship was not only to build a younger company or a new company, but also to try to establish an artistic program which gradually could educate the audience toward the theatre of art because that was our main purpose. This is a very, very long process. It’s already almost 20 years and the results could only begin to be seen just a few years ago, but I think that now we have so many young people here as audience, but not just young people. And because there are not only Hungarians coming to our productions, there are so many Romanians, and also other different people, we are attempting to prove that good theatre is always beyond the language barrier. It is a specific language which is a universal and very important one, because this language can be a kind of bridge to the different cultures. And that, of course, is one of the aims of the UTE as a whole.
It’s interesting how both audiences have evolved in the last 20 years or more. When I went to Bucharest as a student at the theatre academy there, I saw some extraordinary shows. It was the golden age of the Romanian theatre and the audiences were absolutely amazing. The Bulandra Theatre was still run by artistic director Liviu Ciulei and it was an extraordinary company. I could never get a seat in either of their two venues in those four years as a student – I had to sit on the stairs. It was absolutely amazing. When I came to Cluj – I was hired by the Hungarian Theatre in 1981 – there was a very, very conservative audience here. The theatre was one of the three places where Hungarian intellectuals could meet: the cemetery, the church, and the theatre. And people considered that theatre should go on fulfilling a kind of mission that is outside art – a national
or political mission, the conservation of language, or whatever. I don’t want to criticise the audience. I don’t think it’s a faceless mass of people – every single spectator is very, very important. But there was this kind of taste for entertainment, the operettas, the so-called popular plays, the very cheap musicals. The former artistic director and great stage director György Harag had some very hard sentences regarding the Cluj audience. He writes in his book about one of his productions based on the Hungarian classical play by Zsigmond Móricz, I Can’t Live Without Musicians. It was slightly different than what the audience expected based on what they knew about it from school and it played only twenty-four times instead of 200. I could see how sensitive the Bucharest audience was towards experimentation, towards the new, and towards the so-called theatricality – the
Of course, of course. International cooperation. Unfortunately the tendencies don’t always unanimously show this direction. For example, in Paris, Strehler created the Odeon as a kind of showcase theatre, the showcase theatre of Europe, where in his and Jack Lang’s time, almost 70% of the performances were co-productions and hosted productions from Europe. Each member theatre would present one opening in Paris, but the Odeon left the UTE as this percentage fell over the years to almost zero. This percentage fell to about 50% after Lluis Pasqual succeeded Strehler, and then fell totally under George Lavaudant. So they were not anymore interested in doing co-productions or open to international exchanges and to Europe. But the French Ministry of Culture is still funding and supporting the Union and we are looking for another theatre from Paris, probably the Théâtre de la Ville, and we should re-begin or go on having this kind of showcase theatre with productions from the east and the south. I think that a similar centre could be created in the eastern part of Europe where you know, Belgrade’s
BITEF festival was a very important festival which over the years brought so many important productions from all over the world. Before this, it was quite unusual, especially in the years of communism, that Eastern European productions could be seen in the Western countries. And there was a kind of enthusiasm for a couple of years after 1990, but this has come almost to a standstill. So the UTE still has an important role to try to reinvigorate this, let’s say, exchange of blood in Europe, to revitalise it, to shake things up. It’s not only about festivals because festivals are something which are usually presenting final products, while these permanent exchanges, doing workshops and works in progress, mean a more organic and living relationship which is not exhausted in a single event. Two of your own productions are in the festival, Three Sisters and Richard III. What attracts you to these plays right now? Three Sisters is a project which should have been presented earlier but had to be postponed due to health problems and other circumstances. So it’s quite different now to have Three Sisters after Uncle Vanya, and also after Richard III, because Richard III was presented already in the summer in Gyula [Hungary] at the Shakespeare Festival there. In Richard III, which is usually considered an anatomy of power, there was something else which interested me. Which is sin as a means of knowing oneself. In a way, you know, this Richard III character is someone who tries to reach the extreme in the world of villainy. But also, in a world turned upside down in terms of value systems, he is very interesting. He is a very modern character, in how his character is built by Shakespeare – it’s almost as if he had been written by Brecht because he is a self-presenting character, always commenting on his own deeds and, at the same time, pulling off the mask, let’s say, from all the surrounding world in this very bloody moment in history. The War of the Roses was one of the bloodiest examples of civil war. It is also for our world a very contemporary play because the characters remind us of the politicians and politics of our times, where wars are not happening on the
battlefield but somehow happening offstage in the media. In Three Sisters, I was interested in loneliness as a fact of life, and with cultural loneliness in particular. And how our society cannot live without idols. And, of course, this theme of the disappearance of a culture. Also, I consider Chekhov a forerunner of the theatre of the absurd. In his plays, the characters are talking but no one is really listening to the others. They are like scenes from a Ionesco play. Theatre is obviously your passion. What do you hope for the Cluj public in presenting these and all the other plays of the festival? Roger Planchon said in his portrait film, “I love the theatre because it is dying”. This combination of love and death – this is theatre. You know, directing a play allows me to reflect upon the world in a specific way. A play offers a very close approximation of the process of life – something is born and then it disappears. Human life is quite short, but in that short time there can be such richness. Theatre gives us a slice of human life in a very condensed, compressed perspective. It’s an existential slice of the life of humanity, very strong and direct. And both the actors and audience are involved, have to be involved. It’s a kind of ritual, a rite. You know, rites were invented as a way of communication between human concerns and God – this is the theatre. This UTE festival, like all the best international festivals, tries to bring together the best from a number of different cultures. It is an opportunity that allows us to keep our distinctiveness, while being open to accepting and understanding each other. Theatre is about receiving of the Other, and in so doing we have the chance to see ourselves in the mirror of the Other. A theatrical piece isn’t contained on the stage, but goes beyond it, embracing the audience – which means that theatre can create and transform identities. Europe is a small continent yet historically rich in inventions and contributions in science and art. But it has also seen great conflicts. Yet I still believe in the possibility of having not a unified Europe, but a united one. Ailisha O’SULLIVAN

Magam-magam 1968-ban születtem, Nagyszalontán. Arra a kérdésre, hogy mi leszel, ha nagy leszel, hangulatomtól függôen mindig mást válaszoltam. Akartam én színész, balerina, festô, énekesnô lenni, vagyis mindig a mûvészetek valamelyik ága vonzott. Maszkokat elôször a Velencei ikrek számára készítettem – a darabot Vlad Mugur rendezte 1996-ban.
A bôrmaszkokat késôbb, Tompa Gábor Lear királyában, fémmel kombináltam. Egy kevésbé hagyományos anyag, amivel manapság sokat dolgozom, a latex. Próbálom kiszélesíteni a lehetôségeit.

1. A franciáknál ritka az Amédée keresztnév, egyébként nálunk, magyaroknál is az. Mozartot juttatja eszünkbe, akinek második keresztneve. Megválasztása Ionescónál alighanem iróniát sejtet: Istentôl kedveltnek nevezi azt, aki szemünk láttára súlyos megpróbáltatáson megy át. Ugyanezt sejteti a fôszereplô vezetékneve is. Buccinioni a becsületes neve.
A színdarab címe kétértelmû.

A fôszereplô a szûkre szabott térben megállás nélkül tesz-vesz – legfôbb, szinte egyedüli ténykedése: kávét fôz –, csoszog, pörög, hajladozik, keres, hol kapkodva, hol ráérôsen végzi a dolgát. The Corpse in the Bedroom Some reflections on Roger Planchon’s Amédée Roger Planchon does not come to the world of the theatre through formal academic training, which is sometimes a sterilizing process, a process that leaves one barren. This is why he has such a deep relationship with everyday life and with the lives of those who are usually considered outsiders to the so-called high culture. And this enables him to maintain an approach to the theatre that is very fresh. He is one of the youngest artists in European theatre, despite being seventy-seven years old, because of this “holy” point of view, that art is nothing if the most ordinary person cannot participate in it. Generally in our theatres the absurdist playwrights are regarded very highly as huge idols of hidden meanings. And here Roger Planchon comes along and creates a popular performance based on a Ionesco play, Amédée or How to Get Rid of It, which is not an easy play. It is a very Ionesco-nian play in how it speaks about and reveals the total disintegration of the language. The words fall apart, like in The Bald Prima Donna and in Jack (or The Submission) or The Lesson, which are a modern, even post-modern discourse about the language, the falling apart or total separation of the meaning from the words. Working with Amédée requires profound knowledge about the philosophy of language. Yet Planchon has constructed a fantastic production with Amédée, a production which reveals an unknown side of the dramaturgy of Ionesco. Planchon discloses something very everyday, the possibility of a daily approach, an everyman approach, which is not only for the highly educated elite. How does Roger Planchon achieve this? How does he succeed in making his theatre at the same time profound and popular? That paradox is probably the essence of his dramaturgy. He does so, first, by not betraying at all the philosophical depth of the play or the dramaturgy, because he is one of Ionesco’s most
faithful interpreters, not omitting even a single line. He feels the language of Ionesco in a very deep way. He is amazingly obedient to the text. The movement, the acting, the space, and the language work together in a wonderfully precise way. The performance here at the UTE festival was an amazing and great performance with a lot of humour. If tragedy isn’t linked with humour, we are led to an invalid and shallow self-pity, rather than an authentic selflamentation. Planchon’s Amédée brings us to a genuine self-lamentation, but because of this ironic distance which is also there, the performance offers a possibility for the audience to laugh in a more profound way, to laugh while putting questions also about our lives, about our role in society, about our responsibility concerning the history represented by the corpse. Further, Planchon goes back to the essence of what clownery really means. By using these well-known songs, these hits known to everyone – but again, in an ironic context – in this way, he creates a counterstory. There is the story of the play and a counter story, the counter-story being their life, the love of Amédée and Madeleine. It’s there in the text, but Planchon creates it more tangibly using theatrical images and these songs, which of course, are not part of the text. He creates the story of an everyman, showing him in the larger context of history. Amédée is a typical post-war play because this corpse, this body, is the expression of the Second World War – we really can’t get rid of it. We all share this common memory, even those of us born after the war, because our culture was infected with this virus which still seems to destroy us. So in our culture we have our corpses, in our language, in our daily habits, in the way that we regard the other-ness. One of the most important messages of the play is that the presence of the corpse, the presence of the dead body is not just the problem of the politicians or of those who are in power. We all share this problem in common and it’s not allowed for us to forget about it, because forgetting about it is the way to not get rid of it. It’s a paradox, but it’s an important paradox of the theatre because to forget about it or keep it at a distance or to say it’s not relevant to me – this means that it will remain always there, destroying my language, my meanings, my way of life. In our culture, the dictatorship is not a genuine Romanian or Hungarian problem – we say it’s a Soviet problem, forgetting that in Romania there were millions and millions of hidden collabora-
tors of the regime. In Plachon’s production, the show is combined with a very contemporary image, the American soldier. He is again a post-World War II image, the American, Russian or Soviet soldier being always present in Europe. Amédée is a typical post-World War II play, but it’s more than this, like Endgame, like Godot. In Endgame and Waiting for Godot, Beckett suggests or hopes that he can stop time in order to get rid of the corpse. And this is the role of the theatre. The theatre is stopping time for us because the theatre is introducing us into a total other space of a story or feeling, putting to us the question, what is my personal relationship with this? In Endgame, when Clov is looking outside through the telescope and Hamm asks him what he sees, he replies “Corpsed”. It’s again a post-war image. But one shouldn’t focus just on the Second World War and its aftermath here, Roger Planchon, fotó: Vakarcs Lóránd
because the problem is much more general. That’s why it can be understood by all of us. No one who has seen it could forget the last amazing image in Planchon’s Amédée when the giant shoe of the dead body appears as a huge emblem on the earth, on the sphere which hangs in the background of the stage. Amédée tries to throw the body into the river, but in the last image of the performance, it’s still there. It is like a part of our memory which is damaged, an element of our world which we can’t get rid of, but that we can’t live without acknowledging. Without acknowledging it, we can only live a false life, lying to ourselves continuously. VISKY András (with Ailisha O’SULLIVAN)

Négy nap a negyvenkettôbôl Benyomások a kolozsvári színházról
A jó sors úgy hozta, hogy négy napot tölthettem Kolozsváron. Délelôtt-délután órát tartottam a magyar teatrológus hallgatóknak, este színházban ültem.

Legtöbbjükkel Magyarországon is tartottam a kapcsolatot, barátságban is vagyok velük, s tudom, akármilyen sikeresek voltak, lelkük mélyén erdélyi és kolozsvári színészek maradtak. S a másik Csehov! A Ványa bácsi. A három férfi fôszerepet kivéve – Ványa, Asztrov, Szerebjakov – a többi figurát a rendezô kettôzi. Amikor a produkciót elôször láttam Budapesten, nem tudtam szabadulni a Kulka János hangján megszólaló egyszemélyes változat hatása alól, ezért zavart Tompa erôs effektekkel dolgozó, sok ponton Tadeusz Kantor látásmódjával rokon, teátrális feldolgozása. Most viszont mintha egy másik
Ettôl oly tragikus a komikus-groteszk mozzanatokban is bôvelkedô elôadás, amelynek érvényességét tovább tágítja a produkció kétpólusú zenei világa is. A sorozat-elôadások során egyértelmûvé válik, milyen erôs a színház nôi gárdája, meg a más színházaknál keresve keresett, negyvenes éveikben járó férfi színészek kis kara. S ígéretesek a pályájuk legelején tartó fiatalok is. A középiskolában is találtam hasonló foglalatosságot: színdarabokat rendeztem.
ismerted a színház mûködését?
A lelkekben, a tudatban.

A vadásztársaság
Only the Pictures Remain an interview with theatre photographer István BIRÓ What exactly is your position at the theatre? Do you have an official title and job description or do you just wander in and out and take photographs when you feel like it? I’m not part of the regular staff at the theatre, but back in 2005 they asked me to begin photographing their productions as an outside contractor. For all kinds of purposes, for promotion, press releases, brochures, for archival documentation. I have to cover all aspects of the shows; I cannot choose just my favourite part. I have to have images from each scene to document it for the scenographer. I cannot choose only to make, say, portraits, if I want to. So you can’t do exactly what you feel like, you have some specific responsibilities to fulfil.
12
Yes, but I like it.
How did you get the job? Were you interested in theatre before this? I was interested in theatre, but not in photographing it. I work for Krónika [a local daily newspaper], and they asked me to do some pictures of Disciples [by András Visky, directed by Gábor Tompa]. After my pictures appeared in Krónika, András Visky asked for the pictures. They wanted to publish a book and he just collected pictures, I guess, from everyone to have pictures to choose from. And after that, Ildikó Lôrincz from the theatre press office contacted me and it was quite hard for her to convince me to accept working for the theatre. I was a bit afraid of the commitment, to have to be in Cluj at these precise times. I only found out afterwards that it was András and Gábor who looked at the images and they asked her to convince me. So it was not intentional – it just happened
and I’m very happy that it happened.
I think it’s okay, I’ve made up for it since then.
What’s interesting is that four years earlier I went to the theatre and shot, for the same newspaper, a play, I don’t remember the title. I had ten minutes to shoot the photographs because they were closing the edition of the paper and so I had to do it, but I was totally unprepared. I used a flash because it was dark in the theatre and I remember hearing that after the image appeared Gábor was quite upset. It was a great compromise to let someone from a newspaper just step inside and take some pictures in ten minutes and they even allowed me to use the flash, which is so unprofessional. I was a student then, a young photo-reporter at a newspaper and – well. I was ashamed, but I guess he forgot about that.
Now you’re part of the UTE Festival program and you had this exhibition, you were the opening event in fact, at the Shadow Café.
Well, maybe we shouldn’t remind them in this interview.
The pre-opening event. Okay, pre-opening. And I understand from what you’ve just said that there are criteria or constraints in the work, because the theatre has its needs, but for those photographs at the exhibition, can you tell me a little bit about the whole process for you of shooting those photos? When you go in there, do you have something in mind that you’re hoping to capture from a play? Actually, we never discussed about those needs. What was interesting for me and what was important for the theatre,
these two things coincided – that’s why they chose me. It’s a responsibility that I don’t skip any scenes and I guess once they asked me also to do close-ups for the press when they had smaller images. But I never discussed anything about the images with the directors. So, the only communication with the directors was that I made the photos – well, I made a selection. I had my little games or tricks or some proposals of approaching photographically the show and I could see what they were buying, what they chose and what not, and this was interesting. The first time I shot The Lost Letter, I had some images where I knew, well, it’s a little game here of composition and I was curious if they were interested in those. When you put the photography a little bit in front, like compressing the position a bit, that’s always a problem – not a problem, but between the shows I am thinking about that,
during the shows I don’t have the time, solutions come later – how to stay back when it’s too obvious that it is a photographer’s gesture there or a “photographic” picture. I also teach photography and media, and one of my students said after the exhibition that, wow, it’s really nice, but how interesting that there are so few photos where your own photographic vision is obvious. And, this was close. He said that most of the pictures are straight-forward, almost like snapshots. Of course they, nonetheless, involve photographic decisions like timing, and whether to move a halfmetre to the left, decisions that are not so obvious. He mentioned those photos shot from a place not accessible to the audience, that these were stronger compositions. I think it was András Visky’s idea for me to select some of the images that I liked the most for the exhibition and there are sixteen images from twelve productions. Peer Gynt
Why did you choose these sixteen? Well, there are several reasons. It’s not the same for each one. I was also thinking about what could work, being extracted from the context of the play series, and being put beside a totally different play and image on the wall, and still remain an interesting photograph even if someone didn’t know anything about the performance. Do you normally watch the plays through at least once before you begin taking photographs or do you just go in there cold, not knowing what you’re going to see? Now, that’s interesting because usually they call me when they are ready with the lights and the sets or they have a serious deadline approaching. So, no, it’s my first meeting with the performance and I take the pictures and if there’s a chance, I do it a second time, but that’s mostly for filling in any gaps. For instance, if I was not at the right spot at a particular moment, I know the second time where to be in order to make a good image of it. But what’s interesting is that it’s always the first, the first shooting is the one with more winning images. I don’t know why, maybe you have more adrenalin or it’s just a more intense experience. The second time I know that, ah, I shot that already and I’m a bit more relaxed. I know what’s coming, I am waiting for it to come. The first time is more intense. But I found this very interesting after several experiences of the work. I would have thought that the second time it would be much better because I know what happens, but this is not so.
Before the play I usually ask if there will be any very special effects – like 10,000 forks falling from the sky! And they say, no, nothing special, or, watch out for this change of lighting here, or look up because something is going to fall, just to be more prepared to capture it. Or watch out, because you are going to be hit by a bicycle! It was Attila Keresztes’ show for children, I don’t know the English title – Beyond the Smudgy Mountain? Yes. That’s when, I guess it was an actor who saved me several times when they open a door at the back and a bicycle comes in at high speed – I wasn’t always watching out for this. Because I am moving all the time. When they have studio shows it’s even better because I can move really freely and get close to the actors. When the productions are in the main hall, I cannot really move easily because of the seats. Are you ever surprised when you go to look at and edit the photographs at what you’ve captured, that it wasn’t something that you consciously noticed when you were actually taking the shot? There are many things that I capture and see only afterwards but those are little details that it wouldn’t make sense to speak about. So, minor accidents in the photographic image. I take many pictures because usually, there’s very little light and longer exposure time, so it’s very easy to be out of focus and motion blur occurs and it’s not always a good thing. That’s why I make hundreds and hundreds of images, but
I guess that’s common with digital. I like to snap in the motion. It’s more risky because it can turn out useless, rather than when the actors are still and set in the scene, then they don’t move that fast. I like to get them somehow in-between the motion, but I don’t always succeed. Do you feel that taking these photographs has changed your own relationship with the theatre? Do you ever go to the theatre just to watch a play? Yes, but not the plays I have shot. It changes it, because when I shoot, my ears are shut down. My brain is in mute mode. It’s very interesting that I don’t hear – or not hear, but I don’t understand the lines. I don’t follow the lines because I am so much focused on my work and on the images. So this could be a loss for me. I am not going after that, after several rehearsals and photo shootings, to see the play with the text. But I’m fine with that.
like taking photographs of something that is dying because each performance dies at the end when the curtain comes down. I was wondering if you share this feeling, that you’re trying to capture something that is quite ephemeral?
tography to show something of the atmosphere of the performance – two dimensions, no sounds, no movement – you have to compensate for that somehow with photographical means. This is what I try to do. Ailisha O’SULLIVAN
I was quite surprised when last year Gábor said something like, “It’s so sad that only the pictures remain of the shows” and – okay, I understood that it’s sad for him but I was so happy to look at those performances in that great album. So, it’s not a loss for me. No, the problem is how to compensate for having such slight means in phoFotó: Liviu Scripcaru
It’s interesting, I was chatting online with Kinga Kelemen, the dramaturge for Uncle Vanya. We were discussing something and I wrote there a line and she laughed and told me that it was an exact phrase from Uncle Vanya. I didn’t realise, but I’d heard it and subconsciously took it in because I went there for Uncle Vanya maybe seven or eight times. I think András Visky mentioned at the opening of your exhibition that in the introduction to the album of Gábor Tompa productions published last year, Georges Banu says something about how taking photographs of theatre is

Stop the Tempo. A kötet címadó drámáját a Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház három színmûvésze, Bodolay Balázs, Pethô Anikó és Skovrán Tünde adta elô Keresztes Attila rendezésében. (A darabnak nemsokára színpadi bemutatója is lesz: a marosvásárhelyi Yorick Stúdió két héten belül megtartja a magyar nyelvû ôsbemutatót.) Iulia Popovici kritikus azokat a mûveket válogatta össze a kortárs román drámairodalomból, amelyek a legkortársibbak, a leginkább kísérletezôk – az
Andreea Vælean a beilleszkedés kérdését feszegeti Ha fütyülni akarok, fütyülök címû, társadalmi érzékenységû mûvében.
A Stop the Tempo címû dráma esetében, amelyet Demény Péter fordított, ez bebizonyosodott a felolvasás során. Adja magát a „megúszni“ szó kettôs jelentése a vizes jelenetekben. Demény Péter is használ szójátékokat a Stop the Tempo fordításakor: „trendesen“ (301. old.), „mcpánikoljuk“ és „mcszívatjuk“ a McDonald’sosokat (311. old.) – ez utóbbiak azonban csak olvasva élvezhetôk igazán. Mindkét esetben bizonyos szavak összevonása vált ki komikus hatást. Külön izgalmat jelent tehát a fordításban észrevenni ezeket az apró játékokat. A kötetben megjelent mûvek különben is, magukban is izgalmasak. Trendes munkát végeztek a kötet mindennemû szerzôi!
Peca Øtefan Románia 21-e a kommunizmus felôl értelmezi a mát. Ezzel hangsúlyosabbá válik a politikai üzenet.

A kommunizmus tapasztalata Petre Barbu Mi Atyánk, ki vagy a bevásárlóközpontban címû mûvét is áthatja. Mottóként hozzá Ada Milea dalát idézhetnénk: „Ceauøescu n-a murit...
A dráma felolvasásának helyszíne tehát találónak nevezhetô (Shadow Café). Erre rá is játszott a rendezés azzal, hogy a felolvasás végén részesévé akart minket tenni a dráma világának. Miután elhangzott az utolsó mondat, a villany kialudt. Valaki kiverte a biztosítékot?

Tervezzen itt és most koktélt, hûet a fesztiválon szereplô elôadásához. Ergo megszületik a Gianni Schicchi-koktél.
November 5., újabb késô este a Fesztivál Caféban Tompa Gábor arról beszél, miért rendezett Csehovot. A beszélgetés iránytûje ismét koktél-improvizáció felé mutat. A legtutibbat utoljára hagytuk.
A vállalkozó szellemû koktélozni vágyók ráadásként üdítô szakmai csevelyt is hallhatnak. A koktélokból az is rendelhet, akinek rejtélyes okokból késôbb vezet a Fesztivál Caféba útja. MÁRTON Imola
