Dear Friends, If you are interested in studying stage design, this guide will provide you with the basic information regarding our department's goals and method of instruction. Our department was founded as part of the Theater Faculty just after the Second World War by Professor Frantisek Troster, one of the most celebrated personalities of Czech scene design. The simple fact that the study of scene design was understood as a part of the study of theater was something new at the time. Until then, stage design had been studied as part of architecture, visual arts or industrial arts. Studying with directors, dramaturges and actors corresponds better to the actual way theatrical performances and creative teams work together. The founding idea of the school and its course of study were inspired by the between−war German Bauhaus movement as well as the advances of the Russian avant−garde. Traditionally, many of the school's graduates devote themselves not only to work in scene design, but also to work in other artistic fields. Our school's focus on learning in teams does not prevent individual creative development, rather it demonstrates how the latter springs from the former. The school's goal is the multifaceted development of students' creativity.

Naši katedru založil těsně po II. světové válce prof. František Tröster, jedna z největších osobností české scénografie, jako součást divadelní fakulty. Už to, že studium scénografie bylo koncipováno jako součást studia divadla, bylo něčím novým. Do té doby se scénografie studovala jako součást architektury, výtvarného umění nebo umění užitého. Společné studium s režiséry, dramaturgy a herci však lépe odpovídá vzniku divadelního představení i vzniku budoucích tvůrčích týmů. Idea školy a metoda výuky byla inspirována meziválečným německým Bauhausem a postupy ruské avantgardy. K tradici školy patří i to, že řada absolventů se nevěnuje přímo scénografické tvorbě, ale výborně se uplatňuje v dalších uměleckých oborech. Týmová výuka nepřekáží rozvoji tvůrčí individuality, ale naopak z ní vychází. Ambicí školy je všestranný rozvoj kreativity studentů.

Pokud uvažujete o studiu scénografie, musíte vědět o požadovaných předpokladech a o kritériích přijímací zkoušky. Uchazeč by měl prokázat schopnost výtvarného vyjádření. Kresba je základním prostředkem komunikace s pedagogem, režisérem i při realizaci. Požadavky na kresbu nejsou estetické, jde o schopnost vyjádřit přesvědčivě svou představu. Kreslíme věci, které neexistují proto, aby existovat mohly.
If you are considering studying scene design, it is essential you become acquainted with the entrance requirements and the criteria applied to entrance exams. An applicant should be able to demonstrate his ability to express himself visually. Drawing is the basic means of communicating with pedagogues, as well as with directors while working on a production. The drawing requirements are not esthetic; they are based on your ability to convincingly express your ideas. We draw things which do not exist so that they could exist.

Další předpoklad nutný pro studium je schopnost si na základě přečteného dramatického textu vytvořit představu, tu vyjádřit a vizualizovat. Se studiem architektury má scénografie společné tvarování prostoru. Rozdíl je v tom, že nám jde především o jeho dramatickou dimenzi. Náš obor vyžaduje také dobrou orientaci v kulturních dějinách, z ní vycházející schopnost fakta komparovat a nacházet vazby mezi nimi jako východisko pro vlastní tvorbu.
Another basic requirement for the program is the ability to create, express and visualize an idea based on the reading of a dramatic text. Scene design, like architecture, involves the shaping of space. The difference is that with scene design our focus is primarily on the dramatic dimension of space. Our field also requires a thorough orientation in cultural history. The ability to compare and draw relationships among historical facts is the foundation for individual creative work.

Pokud jste talentovou zkoušku úspěšně složil, čeká vás bakalářské studium /Ba/. První semestry jsou koncipovány jako přípravné období. Všechny, i ty nejjednodušší úkoly, mají dramatické zadání. Tento rok bylo pro úkoly všech ročníků zadání společné. Vycházelo z jednoho z témat školské sekce Pražské quadrienalle 2003, kterým byl "Král Lear" Williama Shakespeara.
If you pass the talent entrance examinations, you can look forward to course work leading to a Bachelor's degree (BA). The first semesters are preparatory. All assignments, even the simplest, have a dramatic setting. This year all classes received assignments centered around the same theme. It was based on the theme from the school section of the Prague Quadrennial 2003, "King Lear," by William Shakespeare.

Počáteční úkoly jsou koncipovány jako cvičení k rozvíjení smyslu pro dramatický prostor, pro materiál, barvu a tvar. Jednoduchá prostorová cvičení vytváříte jako dvojice s kontrastním zadáním. Mládí − stáří, chaos − řád, volnost − uzavřenost apod. Vše je soustředěno pouze na interpretaci prostoru. V kostýmní tvorbě se pokoušíte vyjádřit podobná zadání tvarováním dramatické postavy.
Initial assignments are designed to develop a student's sense for dramatic space, material, color and shape. For example, a simple space assignment involves creating contrasting pairs, e.g., young−old, chaos−order, openness−finality. Every assignment is focused solely on interpreting space. When working with costumes, you attempt to resolve an analogous task through shaping of characters.

Materiálová kompozice pomáhá nacházet dramaticky odpovídající spojení dřeva, kovu, textilních materiálů, plastů apod. Poznatky, které získáte tímto cvičením, použijete dál při vytváření kostýmního objektu i při řešení prostoru. Uvědomíte si také, jakou funkci přisoudíte v dalších úkolech barvě a skladbě hmot.
Work with material composition helps one find the appropriate combinations of wood, metal, textile, plastics, etc. Knowledge gained from these assignments can then be applied to further work with costumes and space. You also come to understand how to predict the function of color and materials in further assignments.

V ostatních předmětech a doprovodných přednáškách získáváte informace o možnostech interpretace "Leara", v dobovém kontextu vzniku díla a hledáte vlastní inspirační zdroje. Úkol, kterým máte vizualizovat vlastní myšlení o "Learovi", je imaginární portrét jeho rodiny. Sdělíte tím svou představu o filosofii a myšlenkovém okruhu díla a především o jeho rezonanci se současným světem.
Additional subjects and lectures provide information regarding the possible ways of interpreting "Lear," in period. You search for your own individual inspirational sources. You are given the task to visualize your individual thoughts on "Lear" by creating his family portrait. In this way, you communicate your ideas on the philosophical and conceptual circles surrounding the work and, most importantly, its resonance with contemporary world.

The assignments you have completed up to this point in your studies may have revealed possibilities you had only sensed and rules you had not known. However, there still remains an unanswered question: How does one create a scene design concept?

Problém, který teď musíte řešit, je vztah herce a prostoru a řešení dramatických situací. Zvolený postup má umožnit nacházení autentického divadelního výrazu a neopakovat známé koncepty. Portrét dramatické situace vzniká z výběru klíčových situací textu. V každé situaci jsou nějaké postavy, v nějakém vztahu, v nějakém prostoru.
The problem with which you must now grapple is the relationship between the actor and the space as well as the resolution of the dramatic situation. The approach you choose should facilitate the discovery of how you express something theatrical in an authentic way, rather than copying established ideas. Your picture of the dramatic situation depends on selecting the key situations in the text. In each specific dramatic situation, there are specific characters in specific relationships in a specific space.

Máte nalézt řešení každé z těchto situací nezávisle na ostatních. Prostor volíte tak, aby v něm co nejsilněji rezonovala slova dialogu, aby distribuce prostoru umožnila odpovídající pohyb herců. Společná cvičení s režiséry vám umožní ověřovat vaše hypotetická řešení.
You need to discover how to resolve each one of these situations independently. You shape the space so that an actor's lines have the strongest possible affect, so that spatial relationships correspond to his movements. Together with the director, you assess your hypothetical solutions.

Máte vyřešeny základní situace, ale jenom izolovaně jako solitéry. Vaše řešení teď musíte revidovat, hledat spojitosti a umožnit scénografii život v časové dimenzi. Uvědomíte si, že scénografie se odlišuje od výtvarného umění a architektury působením v čase, podobně jako hudební dílo. Scénografie sama o sobě není uměním, i když má řadu společných znaků, ale teprve tehdy, když vstoupí do kontextu ostatních složek, se stává součástí uměleckého díla − divadelní inscenace.
Protože jste zatím zvládl technické a technologické předpoklady scénografie a kostýmu, osvětlování a projektování, můžete vytvořit komplexní scénografické řešení "Leara". Tím jste splnil požadavky bakalářského programu.
Since you have, by now, mastered the techniques and technical requirements of scene and costume design, lighting and projection, you can now create a complete scenic solution to "Lear." Thus, you have fulfilled the requirements for the Bachelor's program.
You have now resolved the fundamental situation, but only in isolated units. Now you are confronted with the task of revising your proposal, looking for connections and facilitating a scenic life within a temporal dimension. You realize that scene design differs from the visual arts and architecture, just like a musical work, in its temporal affects. Scene design, in and of itself, is not art, even though it contains the hallmarks of art. Scene design becomes part of a work of art once in the context of the other elements which make up a theatrical production. In a production, scene design is active, affecting and energizing the performance's development.

Absolvováním Ba programu a obhájením Ba projektu jste schopen zvládnout základní předpoklady scénografické tvorby. Pokud máte vlastní vizi divadla a scénografie, formulujete svou představu osobního programu a předloženým projektem se ucházíte o magisterské studium. Pedagogové katedry posoudí, zda je váš projekt studia v souladu s programem školy a v jejich možnostech jej realizovat.
After completing the BA program and defending your BA thesis project, you are now capable of working with the basic elements of scene design. If you have your own vision of theater and scene design, you can formulate an individual program for further study. You may apply for the Master's program by submitting a proposal of your project. The department's faculty will determine whether your project falls in line with the school's program and whether the school has the means to facilitate your project.

Magisterské studium na KS se realizuje v ateliéru scénografie pro činoherní divadlo, hudební divadlo a balet a pro nedivadelní prostory, dále v ateliéru kostýmu a masky pro všechny formy divadla, film a televizi a v ateliéru filmové a televizní scénografie. Magisterské studium usiluje o zvládnutí scénografie jako autorské součásti divadelní inscenace.
The Master's program at the Department of Scene Design is conducted in various ateliers: in the Scene Design Studio for Drama, Music, Ballet and Site−specific Spaces; in the Costume and Masque Studio for Theater, Film and Television; and in the Film and Television Scene Design Studio. The aim of the Master's program is to produce scene design as an author element of a theatrical production.

Scénograf je spoluautorem koncepce a autorem vizuální podoby dramatického díla. Studium vychází z vašich individuálních předpokladů. Máte možnost spoluvytvářet svůj učební plán a studovat kombinaci programu více ateliérů. Zadávané úkoly a jejich specifikace vyplývá z vašeho osobního programu a předpokládá vaši schopnost výtvarně ovlivňovat tvorbu inscenace. V této fázi studia nacházíte spolupracovníky jak v rámci školy, tak v prostředí profesionálních divadel. The scene designer is co−author of a work's conception and author of its visual form. Your course of study will be based on your individual assumptions and needs. You will have the opportunity to develop your course of study in conjunction with faculty and work in a combination of ateliers. Assignments and their specifications will be based on your individual course of study and assume an ability to visually affect a performance's production. In this stage of your studies, you will collaborate with individuals in academic as well as professional contexts.

You will be required to design performances in the school's theater in order to graduate. These performances in DISK (the school's theater) verify your ability to work as part of team and work with the other components which make up a theatrical performance. You will also be required to write a theoretical reflection, or essay, which clarifies your approach and contextualizes your work within contemporary theater.

Váš program zahrnuje nejrůznější aplikace a modifikace scénografie. Řešíte problémy využívání nedivadelních prostorů (site−specific), aplikujete scénografické postupy v architektuře veřejného prostoru, při koncipování výstav, zkoumáte interaktivní možnosti scénografie. Kvalitu výuky a úroveň vašeho vzdělání si máte možnost ověřit, porovnat a doplnit na zahraničních stážích.
Your course of study will include the various applications and modifications of scene design. You will resolve problems using non−theatrical, site−specific spaces; apply scene design methods to public spaces; design exhibitions; and discover the interactive possibilities of scene design. You will have the opportunity to assess and compare the quality and standard of your education while studying abroad. This will also give you the opportunity to supplement your studies.

Pedagogové Od založení školy prof. Tröstrem se pedagogy scénografie a kostýmu stávají renomované osobnosti těchto oborů. Podmínkou je vlastní umělecká činnost a prestiž. Pedagogická činnost je vždy reflexí vlastní tvorby. Nejedná se jen o předávání zkušeností. Pedagog především kreativně působí na formování osobnosti budoucího scénografa. Všichni pedagogové scénografie a kostýmu jsou absolventy této školy.
The Department's faculty Ever since the time the Academy was founded by Professor Troster, all scene and costume design faculty have consistently become renown in their fields. Faculty are active in their artistic fields and have received recognition for their work. The pedagogical role of the faculty is to reflect on individual work, not just pass on their experience. Most importantly, faculty creatively affect the personality formation of the future scene designer. All scene and costume design faculty member are graduates of the Academy.

Collaborates with most Czech theaters as well as theaters in Finland, Greece, Germany, Po−land and Hungary. Created more than 500 scene and costume designs. Designs costumes for film and television. First Prize Trienale Novi Sad for Costume Design in 2001.

Spolupracuje s většinou českých divadel a s divadly v Itálii, Chorvatsku, Slovensku, Slovinsku, Rusku a v Německu. Vytvořil přes 220 výprav, z toho z velké části i s kostýmy. Spolupracuje s televizí a realizuje v architektuře. Byl nominován na Cenu A. Radoka v r. 1995.

Collaborates with most Czech theaters as well as theaters in Italy, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Russia and Germany. Created more than 220 designs, many of which were costume designs. Works in televi−sion and architecture. Nominated for the A. Radok Prize in 1995.
