EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS This brochure was made by Czech Athletic Federation‘s Communications Department. www.atletika.cz

DEAR FRIENDS OF ATHLETICS, The 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam is an important milestone on the way to Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the Czech team. I am glad that a large number of athletes has fulfilled qualifying standards for this event, including both many promising young athletes as well as most of our experienced medal contenders. I am convinced The Netherlands with hosting city of Amsterdam will offer a week of athletics’ celebration, since Dutch people are both experienced and sports enthusiasts. Also, the organizers are bringing some events off the stadium into the streets and parks, which is an important step to draw more fans to our beloved sport. I believe our team has been preparing very thoroughly for the Championships and I have no doubts everybody will show all her or his hard work to achieve their best possible results. I wish everyone positive competition at the Olympic stadium, full of fairness and free of injuries. Also, I would like to point out, that if things do not go as expected, true athlete always fights until the end. That is the spirit of every human effort. I have confidence Amsterdam 2016 will be success for European athletics; and crowded stadium – host of Olympics back in 1928 – will see another stellar event. I hope Czech team will confirm its role among top continental countries and upcoming Championships will give our athletes confidence one month ahead of Rio.

DID YOU KNOW? | With regard to sports, Michal started with table tennis the first two years at the elementary school. | Then he played tennis for eight years but he quit due to financial reasons (he only grew up with his mother). | He developed his passion for athletics at the stadium in his hometown Opava and with his friend-neighbour they practiced „combined events“ in the garden, threw cobblestones and jumped on a rod into sacks of hay. | In his leisure time after the season he likes going to the mountains (climbing, kiting, ski alpinism). | He has a dog (Jim), a ridgeback without pedigree.

DID YOU KNOW? | Ten-year-old Kateřina started with athletics, she was in a sports class both at primary and secondary school. | Until age of 21 she competed for athletic club SSK Vítkovice, where she trained under the guidance of coach Michal Buzek. | In 2011 she changed for the “Fast Girls”, group led by Martina Blažková. | After completing bachelor of sports management in Ostrava she follows with Master’s degree in Prague. | Her motto goes: “It is not shame to fall, it is shame to stay lying.“ | She likes inline skating, spending time in nature and with her friends.

DID YOU KNOW? | Pavel had played handball since 8 but had to stop because of back issues in 13 years of age. | He always liked running so he took up athletics while he was 15. | In 2014 he split with his first coach Miroslav Wastl because Pavel could not regularly meet coach at training while working. | He lives in Chrudim and works in Pardubice for a bank insurance company. | Every work day he runs partly or even whole 10k distance there and back between these towns and thinks that higher mileage improved his results. | He graduated at university in Hradec Králové with Bachelor Degree in marketing and management.

DID YOU KNOW? | Zuzana’s older sister Michaela introduced her to athletics and has always been her idol. | Michaela devoted her time to combined events and was successful at international competitions. | Zuzana’s parents brought her to sport and she began with athletics at the age of 12. In her free time she likes to play golf. | Among her hobbies are reading, music, going on trips, getting to know places, skiing and growing anything that could later be eaten. | Her passion is diving and she found out it even helps her in athletic preparation. | She enjoys good food, quality sleep and likes to relax. | Her biggest sport hero is Allison Felix.

DID YOU KNOW? | One of Adam’s descendants is Jan Helcelet - revivalist and founder of Sokol sport club in Moravia. Adam’s grandpa was a painter. | He comes from a log house located in the middle of woods in a little village with only about 100 inhabitants in North of Bohemia. | That is why his big hobby is relax in woods, animals and nature in general. | He learned walking only six months old and was brought to sport by his dad. | His athletic beginnings date back to time, when he was 6. | He studies at Metropolitan University Prague.

DID YOU KNOW? | Since his childhood, Jakub has been very active and restless. | Football stood at the beginning of his sport career; he then devoted himself to orienteering for a while; only then he began full athletic training. | He believes that everything that is being done should be done properly; therefore he gives athletics 100 percent. | His free time activities are travelling, car and orienteering. | He enjoys meeting his mates and loves his parents’ doggie. | His nickname is „Pigeon“ (Holub in Czech) and funny fact is that he has been living in street called Pigeon’s (Holubí) in Prague. But Jakub’s coach has his own nick for him: „Marquis de drudge“. | He is known for being a beer lover.

DID YOU KNOW? | Michaela was born a few hours before the victory of the Czech ice hockey team at the Olympics in Nagano. | Parents brought her for sports through swimming and cycling; since she was ten years old she has focused on athletics, first on combined events, now fully engaged in the high jump. | Michaela studies grammar school and trains in Brno. | She spends her free time with her dog and her friends. | She likes basketball.

DID YOU KNOW? | Marek grew up in the small town of Krnov. | As a little boy he was very restless and therefore, since the age of six he started with sports. | First came basketball, which he was doing for ten years. | At 15 years of age Marek started with athletics, mainly with javelin and partially long and high jump. A friend of father recommended little son for Olomouc club. | What Ladislav likes about this sport is the fact that he can still get better. | He studied at high school focused on sports and began studying Sports Management at Palacký University in Olomouc. DID YOU KNOW? | Until this winter, Eva was a full time cross-country skier, she attended three Winter Olympics and achieved fifth place in Sochi 2014. | As a kid she ran several races on track and regularly competed at traditional “Běchovice-Praha”, second oldest road race in the world. | Few seasons back she started to be more and more drawn by athletics and this year she fully focuses on running. | She mentioned as a reason to change sports (at least temporary) great atmosphere in Czech runners’ community. | She fulfilled standard for Rio in her marathon debut. | She loves her female dog Bella (breed Samoyed), likes to bake and crochet.
