JULY 18-24, ČESKÉ BUDĚJOVICE CZECH REPUBLIC
In 1265, the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II established the city of Esker Budějovice on the confluence of the rivers Vltava and Malše in order to strengthen his position of power in South Bohemia. The regular ground plan of the royal city, with a one hectare square in its centre and many valuable religious and secular buildings, is one of the pinnacles of medieval urbanism. Immediately after its foundation the city of České Budějovice became the economic capital, and the centre of power, of South Bohemia and a key pillar of support for royal power. The privileges extended to the city were further strengthened in the 14th century by Karel IV and the city became a centre of trade and crafts. The city also became wealthy due to silver mining in the nearby village of Rudolfov and the minting of coins. The economic growth of the city was only impaired by the Thirty Years' War and in the second half of the 17th century by an extensive fire. For decades the restoration of the city continued in the Baroque style and as a result its architectural style changed. A number of religious buildings and institutions were built throughout the city, e.g. the Bishopric, but also some secular buildings.
The industrial development of the 19th century brought many changes to transportation and manufacturing. In 1832, the first wagon on the horsedrawn railway departed from České Budějovice for Linz. The horse-drawn railway was the first one of its kind in Europe. The manufacturing sector saw the establishment of a pencil factory, an enamel works, a tobacco factory and breweries. The 20th century brought sweeping changes in all areas of life. When the borders were eventually opened up the city of almost 100,000 inhabitants became the urban centre of South Bohemia.
The city is the home of the University of South Bohemia, many vocational schools, scientific institutes, and also the four-ensemble South Bohemian Theatre, the South Bohemian Museum and also other private museums and galleries. Major local companies include Budweiser Budvar Brewery, Budějovický měšťanský pivovar (Budweiser Citizens Brewery – formerly Samson Brewery), Madeta dairy, Koh-INoor Hermit and Gama pencil factories, Robert Bosch and Motor Jikov.
Visitors to the city can find not only very important historic monuments and sights, but can also enjoy cultural and sports activities and events or use one of the many opportunities for shopping. Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. The city of České Budějovice is surrounded by picturesque landscape enriched by such architectural treasures as Hluboká Castle and the village of Holašovice, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its Folk Baroque buildings. The same honour applies to Český Krumlov too with its magnificent castle and historic city centre
