Voorwoord Beste Pugilisten, voor jullie ligt een nieuwe Knock Out. De eerste weer, sinds ik terug ben van een paar maanden reizen. De koude wintermaanden heb ik dit jaar omgeruild voor de A r g e n t i j n s e tango, dorpsfeesten in Bolivia en bergtoppen van Peru! In totaal ben ik 3 maanden weg geweest, om rond te gaan reizen door Argentinië, Chili, Bolivia en Peru. Gewapend met een Swiss Army Knife (kadootje van vaders), huidskleurige moneybelt en een beetje boks ervaring, lieten m'n ouders me gaan. De eerste dagen waren wennen. Al gauw was dat voorbij en werd het een reis vol hoogtepunten. Bijvoorbeeld een bezoekje aan oud-Pugilist Wiebren, die tegenwoordig in het Chileense kustplaatsje Viña del Mar woont en werkt. Samen met andere oud-Pugilist Philip, bracht ik hier een weekje door. Na een aantal weken slapen in stapelbedden, op kamers met soms meer dan 15 personen, was een weekje vertoeven in zijn appartement pure luxe. Een eigen keuken, een schone badkamer en een prachtig dakterras (met zwembad!) met uitzicht over het stadje… Met daarnaast een bezoekje aan een festival (met Heineken bier én dezelfde muntjes als op het Nederlandse “Mysteryland”), een modern winkelcentrum en zijn boksschool begon dit weekje verdacht veel te lijken op het studentenleven in Groningen. Voorwoord Het avondje dat we doorbrachten in de lokale (oldskool) boksschool, was een leuke ervaring. Achter de sportschool is een buitenruimte, waar de ring meteen in het oog valt. Deze neemt een prominente plek in op het binnenplaatsje. Het is vervolgens even flink zoeken naar twee bijpassende handschoenen, maar uiteindelijk laat je je eisen zakken en volstaan simpelweg een linker- en rechterhandschoen. Gewichtjes, spiegels, sportschoenen en een muziekinstallatie blijken een overbodige luxe te zijn. Deze training had dit allemaal niet, maar was minstens zo zwaar als bij Pugilicé! Conditie en bokstechnieken werden combineerd en maakten het voor de luie backpackers een pittig uurtje. De training werd afgesloten met een stukje hardlopen: zo snel mogelijk de trap op, om vervolgens op normaal tempo terug te rennen naar het begin van de trap. Dit een keer of 10. Heel begrijpelijk dat wij de rest van de dagen hiervan moesten bijkomen. Gelukkig heeft Viña del Mar een prachtig strand, met heerlijke empañadas op loopafstand. Een paar dagen laten was ik helemaal klaar om verder te gaan. Er moest nog zonsopgang bekeken worden op Paaseiland, gemountainbiked vanaf de gevaarlijkste weg ter wereld en als een echte Inca naar Machu Picchu gewandeld worden. Bijna iedere maand is er een Pugilicé borrel bij Chaplin’s Pub!!! Tijdens de training heb je vaak geen tijd om met je mede-boksers te praten, want Harrie weet van geen ophouden. Praten?? Nee, ‘reall pushupssss’ en ‘Die Nase auf den Bodem’ krijg je dan te horen. Dus pas maar op! Om toch gezellig een praatje te kunnen maken en het eens even goed over die zware trainingen te kunnen hebben, is er die maandelijkse borrel. Het eerste drankje is voor jullie altijd gratis! Vanaf 21.00 uur is iedereen welkom! Dus tot 19 june allemaal!!

Zoals sommige van jullie wellicht al weten heb ik het vertrouwde o zo gezellige Groningen en Pugilicé sinds januari ingeruild voor Rotterdam. Niet omdat ik zo graag weg wou, maar omdat ik in Rotterdam een hele mooie baan aangeboden kreeg. Helaas heb ik in Rotjeknor nog geen goeie alla Pugilicé boksschool kunnen vinden, maar ik geef de zoektocht nog niet op. In maart was ik weer eens een weekend je terug in Groningen, want er gaat natuurlijk niks boven Groningen. Daar dacht Ernesto ‘’Mr. Perfect’’ Hoost (viervoudig wereldkampioen K-1 vechten) net zo over, want hij gaf dat zelfde weekend een exclusieve twee en een half uur durende (kick)boks clinic op de ACLO (Deltaserat).

Joost (with) the Hoost Na eerst de avond er voor goed opstap te zijn geweest besloot ik de volgende brakke middag mee te doen aan de clinic van Ernesto Hoost. Daar moest ik natuurlijk bij zijn! Ging er vanuit ook andere pugilisten daar tegen te komen. Al snel werd duidelijk, tot mijn spijt, dat ik de enige vuistvechter was tussen alle kickboksers. Ernesto Hoost verzorgde de training geheel in zijn eentje, maar met de passie van tien. Zo demonstreerde hij een aantal nuttige stoot en trap combinaties en nam hij alle tijd om rond te lopen en individuele tips te geven. Als vuistvechter was het tijdens het sparren een ware uitdaging om tussen de ervaren kickboksers de trap en knie technieken toe te passen. Het was met mijn trage brakke kop niet gemakkelijk tussen alle kickboksers, maar als enige vuistvechter wist ik mij volgens Ernesto Hoost toch mooi staande te houden. Wat hij niet wist is dat ik al eens een kickboks training had gevolgd van niemand minder dan Juan ‘’Bodykicks’’ Carlos & Arnau Domingos Gonzáles (oud pugilicé leden). Al met al een mooie leerzame training, met als nieuwe ervaring dat ik nu weet hoe het is om tegenover een wereldkampioen te staan. Jammer dat ik niemand van jullie tegen kwam! Misschien zien we elkaar op de BATA eind april of op Tomorrowland ;) ‘’Winners never quit and quitters never win’’ Vince Lombardi

Introductie nieuwe boksers Wie ben je? Hoi! Ik ben Jacobien van Staveren en ben net de 20 jaar gepasseerd. Ik boks nu een tijdje (vanaf januari) bij Pugilicé en heb het zeker naar mijn zin. Waar is je thuis-thuis en hoe lang woon je al in Groningen? Ik kom uit Dronten, dat ligt in Flevoland naast Lelystad. Ik woon nu bijna 2 jaar in Hoge Noorden. Wat studeer je en hoe bevalt het? Ik studeer Pedagogische wetenschappen aan de RUG. Ik vind de studie niet heel leuk, maar dit komt mede omdat ik ben uitgeloot en Pedagogische Wetenschappen mijn tweede keuze was. Ik maak de studie wel af, omdat ik in deze studie wel een toekomst beeld zie. Hoe ben je zo bij Pugilicé terecht gekomen? En hoe vind je het? Ik had samen met een vriendinnetje afgesproken om een keer zo’n boks cursus te gaan doen, helaas was zij toen niet ingeloot en had ik besloten om de cursus maar alleen te doen. Waar ik echter geen spijt van heb;).

Introductie nieuwe boksers Het was een leuke cursus en het sprak mij zeker aan om lid te worden. Ik wilde namelijk een sport vinden waar ik mijn energie in kwijt kan en dit kan ik zeker bij boksen. Daarnaast is iedereen erg aardig/vriendelijk en ook open en dat spreekt mij zeker aan. Wie is de leukste, knapste, lekkerste man/vrouw bij Pugilicé? Sowieso Harrie :P, geen twijfel aan mogelijk. Wat is je favoriete oefening en welke oefening sla je het liefst over? Ik vind de buikspier oefeningen altijd het leukst maar ik sla de rare stofzuigmoves liever over ;) Wat houdt je naast je studie/boksen bezig? Ik dans heel graag, liefst de hele dag. Momenteel zit ik op showballet, maar heb ik vroeger verschillende soorten dans gedaan van klassiek tot hiphop en van stijldansen tot salsa. Daarnaast ben ik verslaafd aan zonnen, als de eerste zonnestralen schijnen lig ik al in mijn bikini. Ook werk ik nog naast studie/boksen. Ik werk nu 2 jaar als vaste gastvrouw bij PEC Zwolle (eredivisie voetbal) en al een aantal jaren voor COTY Beauty als freelance visagiste waar ik meestal op beurzen en evenementen moet werken (veelal in Amsterdam en Almere). Heel belangrijk om te weten.. Single? Relatie? Of misschien al getrouwd? Ik heb helaas mijn prins op het witte paard nog niet veroverd.

Introductie nieuwe boksers Wat is je favoriete plek hier in Groningen? De tango en de Rumba zijn zeker mijn favoriete plekjes. Daarnaast eet ik ook regelmatig en graag hapje met vriendinnen in verschillende eetcafés in Groningen. Wijn of bier? Haha ik drink geen bier! Liever ook geen wijn (alleen bij het eten). Dus helaas geen van beide, ik houd het bij de sterke drank ;) Mijn favoriete drankje is wodkalime of barcadicola. Waar zie jij jezelf over 10 jaar? Hopelijk heb ik dan mijn prins op het witte paard veroverd en woon ik gelukkig samen en heb ik alvast 1 kindje en een hond. Ik woon in Haarlem of Bloemendaal en werk als kinderrechercheur bij de politie. Last but not least heb ik een ongelooflijk strak lichaam gekregen door de boks trainingen en kan ik 50x opdrukken :D!!!

Introductie nieuwe boksers Who are you? My name is T o m s Černooks. I’m 19 years old. I come from Riga, Latvia. I have played football 11 years in team “Skonto Academy”. Furthermore, I have been a candidate for the National Latvian youth teams. But because of injury’s I retired and started to do other kinds of sports: - Fitness - Trx - Also, now I’m enjoying boxing. How long have you lived in Groningen? I have been living here in the Groningen since 28th of Augusts, 2012. So I have lived here for 9 months. What are you studying and how do you like it? I’m studying International Business and Management in the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. I’m enjoying my study, even though it’s hard. I have new, good friends from all over the world and I think tha’s great. Furthermore, this city is the best for a student, because Groningen is very international, there are more than 50 000 students living here and average age is only 24.

Introductie nieuwe boksers How did you hear about so Pugilicé? And how do you find it? In the September I started to attend gym in Aclo sports centre. After few months of training I found out that Aclo offers beginner course in the boxing. I wanted to train in the boxing long time ago, and now I had an opportunity to do that, so after New Year I applied to it and I enjoyed trainings, because it was fun and also something new for me and a new challenge. I finished two courses for beginners, because I wanted to better prepare for the club, where are people with bigger experience than I had. After courses I applied for Pugilicé club. And now I can say it’s great, I’m happy that I joined Pugilicé. Furthermore, I would recommend to the others to join, because it’s fun and it will help you to get in the shape. Who is the cutest, smartest, best man / woman at Pugilicé? Pugilicé member are very interesting and also international, which makes things even more interesting. Also, I can't emphasize one person who would be the best, because everyone is interesting with something different from the others. Also, I can say that everyone in the club is very friendly and experienced members always teach the new club members, which is also very important for the new club member, because it could help him/her to improve.

Introductie nieuwe boksers What is your favourite exercise and what exercise you prefer to turn on? Trainings are interesting, because of the variety of tasks. Every time we are doing something different, that’s why it’s so interesting. I like technical challenges, which requires correct hits and combinations. I know that there are also people who prefer physical exercise part more than technical.Boxing will be one of the sports that I will do in my future free time. Also, I would like to suggest people to join the Pugilicé, it’s great place to be. What's happening alongside your studies / boxing ? Alongside my study and boxing I still do sports. I’m trying to get in shape for the summer. Also, I am enjoying student life. I like to go out or just relax watching football or some movie with my friends. Furthermore, I am trying to go around the Netherlands to see new places and the big cities. What is your favorite place in Groningen? Wine or beer? My favourite place in the Groningen is Grote Markt, because it’s just beautiful there. Also, Martini tower is just next to it and it looks beautiful. By the way, you can sit down and drink wine or beer there. I can’t say which one is better wine or beer, because it depends on the situation, but I like both and Grote Markt is great place to drink one of these drinks.

My future plans are clear, I want to make my own company, because I have dreamed about it since I was 14 years old and now I am studying about business, so after study I will have the knowledge to make my own business. Cynthia from South Africa Hi Pugiliceers Ik (Cynthia Knuppe) ben gevraagd om een stukje te schrijven voor in de knock-out dus bij deze. Woensdag 16 januari stapte ik in het vliegtuig naar ZuidAfrika om hier een jaar bij Modgaji Cheetah Conservation Projects te gaan werken. Hier worden cheetahs grootgebracht en getraind om uiteindelijk losgelaten te worden in de natuur. Sommigen zijn gered uit het wild, sommigen zijn in gevangenschap geboren. Ook zijn hier servals, caracals, african wildcats en hyena’s. De cheeta word met uitsterven bedreigd dus het is mooi om hier wat aan te kunnen doen. Het reservaat is bijna 6000 hectare groot en ligt vlak boven Baviaanskloof. Ik heb hier in 2011 drie weken vrijwilligerswerk gedaan en vond het echt fantastisch. Ik hoefde dan ook niet lang na te denken om te reageren op de vacature die vrij kwam. Tot mijn verbazing kreeg ik te horen dat ik de gelukkige was en toen ging alles in een keer heel snel. Ik had iets minder dan 2 maanden de tijd om alles te regelen. Dat klinkt lang maar dat viel tegen. Werk moest worden opgezegd, m’n appartement, visum moest aangevraagd worden, nieuw paspoort, verhuizen en natuurlijk afscheid nemen. En dan ineens ben je in Zuid-Afrika. Het is hier op het moment zomer dus lekker warm. De temperatuur is overdag rond de 30 graden en kan oplopen tot over de 40. Omdat het zo warm is begint de dag vroeg. Mn wekker gaat elke ochtend om 5.15 zodat ik om 6.00 klaar ben om te gaan. Elke dag is anders hier.

Gemiddeld 4x per week gaan we cheetahwalk doen (jagen met de cheetahs). Dat houdt in dat we de cheetahs uit hun verblijf halen en in het reservaat los laten zodat ze een antiloop (steenbok, springbok, impala, kudu enz.) kunnen vangen. Ze zijn getraind om mensen te volgen en weten hoe ze moeten jagen. De walk zoals het hier genoemd wordt is geweldig om mee te maken en geen enkele is hetzelfde. De ene keer duurt de walk 20 min en de andere keer 7 uur, ligt eraan hoe snel ze iets vangen. Het was wel even wennen die walks, en dan dacht ik dat ik wel een aardig goede conditie had door als dat gedrill van Harrie! Je loopt over heuvels op rotsachtige ondergrond, stukken door de bosjes en in de zon (die om 8 uur echt al heet is). Als de cheetahs wat gevangen hebben dan mogen ze het voor de helft opeten. De ander helft slepen we terug naar hun verblijf en dan mogen ze daar verder eten. Er zijn nog geen hekken met elektriciteit om het reservaat dus ze kunnen nog niet los rondlopen helaas. Dat is het volgende doel van het project.

“Kopango” is Luo, the language of the Acholi, a tribe situated in the North of Uganda where I am living at this very moment. It could be translated into “What’s up?”. :) While trying to learn at least the basics of that language, getting to know some local foods:

In the shade of a tree… I am also doing the research for my Master thesis this side, which is about “the reintegration of formerly abducted children back into the educational system” and more specifically “the role that (fighting) sports can play in this process”. Quick background of the countries situation: between 1986 and 2006, Northern Uganda has been in war. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) under the leadership of Joseph Kony has fought a fight against internal marginalization and injustice, though in immensely brutal and inhumane ways. Many families got torn apart, people were displaced into camps, and especially children were abducted to fight as soldiers for the rebels or girls as sex slaves for LRA soldiers. Some of those children had to kill their own parents or friends. Many of them never returned, until today. The country, and especially the Northern part which was the affected area, is now in a state of rebuilding its status and peoples’ citizenship. Despite this awful history Uganda is one beautiful green country. Even though just recently out of war, people are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The town that I live in is called Gulu and it has been a centre of the war during those 20 years. I feel that it is not so very different to Groningen actually, which is why my home was, is, and stays G-Town either way! ;) It is one of the bigger towns in Uganda, yet small enough to reach everything by foot or bike. It is always busy and something is going on, yet not so overcrowded as is Kampala (capital city, which may be more like A’dam for this matter being).

Our daily temperature reaches its peak at around 3438°C at the moment. Now slowly raining season sets in though and apparently I can expect some refreshments once in a while. After one week in Gulu and almost 3 weeks without any training I then finally found a place to train again. A colleague led me to the local stadium where professional boxer Kidega Dragon is training himself and some youth on a daily basis. Their training spot: A tree in the corner of the stadium. The punching bag: 3 car tires held together and being attached to the tree through wires. My first thoughts: This must be a joke!

In the shade of a tree… Next thing the trainer comes to see me. He invites me to join the training the following day. And there I am, 4pm the next day, the only girl (let alone being the only Muzungu =white person) in the local football stadium, it is 36°C and I am curious on what comes next. 1. Waiting, because we are in Africa after all! 2. Lots of attention, because a white chick boxing in the local stadium is by far nothing you can see every day (well now they can). And 3. One bad-ass training which I should suffer from for days and days to come. So I am citing: “Things are done the hard way here Lina. This is Africa. Africa does not sleep.” And indeed… I am now training 6 days a week, usually in sunny 36°C, but occasionally also in the rain. Here we take what we get. People don’t rest. Roadwork in the morning, Training twice a day (I skip the morning training though which is between 6am and 9am)… Moving time precedes any resting time. It is tough! But I am loving it!!! Now while giving new talents the chance to prove themselves, Kidega is also pursuing his career… With as much as some car tires and the will to succeed, he is providing everything for himself as well as so much for others! I wish there were more people like him in this world! You wouldn’t expect it, but there is some talent in Uganda… In the shade of a tree! Boksers en voeding Boksen is een zware sport, dat weten wij allemaal maar al te goed! Eerst een uur conditietraining, waarbij we touwtjespringen, hardlopen, opdrukken etc. Na het eerste uur ben je vaak al aardig gesloopt, maar dan moet er nog eens worden gebokst. Na die 2 uren sporten heb je vaak een voldaan gevoel en ben je ‘lekker’ gesloopt. Vaak als je de volgende dag op je fiets stapt, dan merk je dat je benen nog moe zijn. Wat voor sporters natuurlijk ook heel belangrijk is, is gezonde voeding! De ‘actieve voedingsdriehoek’ geeft aan wat mensen dagelijks nodig hebben.

Voorbeeld Man van 70 kilo gaat 1 uur sparren: Energieverbruik sparren x LG x tijd = totaal energieverbruik in kcal 13,3 x 70 kg x 1 uur = 931 kcal !!!

Dr. Ironfist (Vitali Klitschko)

VitaliVolodymyrovych Klitschko (born 19 July 1971) is a Ukrainian professional boxer and the reigning WBC heavyweight champion. He is the elder brother of Wladimir Klitschko. He is leader of the political party Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform and since 15 December 2012, a member of the Ukrainian parliament. He previously held the WBO and WBC titles. Klitschko is the first professional boxing world champion to hold a PhD degree. When 13-year-old Vitali put on a pair of boxing gloves for the very first time, nobody could have imagined that he would become one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time. Vitali started his career as a successful Kickboxer – he became a six29

It was not long before Vitali discovered his passion for boxing and quite fast he was very successful too: As an amateur he became Ukrainian Heavyweight Champion three times, champion of the first World Military Games and winner of the silver medal at the amateur world championships. In 1996 Vitali left the amateur stage behind and his professional record since then is impressive: 47 fights, 45 wins with 41 KOs! Vitali won his first important title on October 24th 1998. In a fight for the European championship he defeated Mario Schießer by TKO in Round 2. This victory paved the way towards his ultimate goal – a shot at the World Heavyweight Title! On June 25th 1999 this dream became reality. After knocking out Herbie Hide in round 2, Vitali had became WBO Heavyweight Champion of the world! Unfortunately, Vitali lost the WBO title on April 21st 2000 to Chris Byrd. In round nine unlucky Vitali had to quit due to a severe injury to his shoulder. Until that moment Vitali was well ahead on all three judges scorecards. But this setback could not slow down his hunger and ambitions and on June 21nd 2003 Vitali got another title shot – this time against Lennox Lewis. But once again good fortune was not on his side. After a fantastic fight, that earned Vitali great sympathies all over the world, the referee stopped the fight on advice of the ringside physician. Knock-out — Jaargang 11 nr. 1

Thereason was a deep cut underneath Vitali´s left eyebrow that may have caused permanent damage if the fight had continued. Once again at the time the fight was stopped, Vitali was leading on the scorecards. On April 24th 2004 at Staples Center in Los Angeles Vitali fought Corrie Sanders for the belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC). After a difficult and entertaining fight Vitali finally won by TKO in round 8. After successfully defending his WBC Title against Danny Williams, a scheduled title fight against Hasim Rahman had to be postponed several times before finally being cancelled. Vitali was truly plagued by injuries in 2005. After a back-surgery and tears of a meniscus and a cruciate ligament in his right knee Vitali Klitschko decided on November 9th 2005 to retire as reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion of the world. Consequently Vitali was appointed Champion Emeritus by the WBC, a status that enables him, in case of a comeback, to challenge the current WBC World Champion right away. Dr. Ironfist (Vitali Klitschko) 1400 days as Champion Emeritus Vitali Klitschko returned to the boxing ring on October, 11, 2008 in Berlin. His opponent was the reigning WBC Champion, Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter from Nigeria. With an impressive performance, Vitali regained the WBC belt for the second time after 2004 by TKO when Samuel Peter did not return to the ring after round 8. Thus Vitali Klitschko is the fourth boxer alongside Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis to win a heavyweight belt for the third time. At the same time he took his successful revenge for the loss his brother Wladimir had suffered against the South African about a year ago. But at the height of his boxing abilities Vitali had to sustain several more injuries. Since then, Vitali sucessfully defended his title nine times: Juan Carlos Gomez (March 2009), Cristobal Arreola (September 2009), Kevin Johnson (December 2009), Albert Sosnowski (May 2010), Shannon Briggs (October 2010), Odlanier Solis (March 2011), Tomasz Adamek (September 2011), Dereck Chisora (February 2012) and Manuel Charr (September 2012). Vitali Klitschko is a man with visions. One of these visions is to help his home country Ukraine toward a better future. Because of that he is pursuing a political career outside the ring in Ukraine. In Kiev he ran for mayor twice and is as the party leader of UDAR a member of the city parliament. In addition he was a member of the organizational committee of the EURO 2012 in Ukraine.

Dr. Ironfist (Vitali Klitschko) Together with his brother, Vitali Klitschko founded the Klitschko Brothers Foundation in Ukraine and is an ambassador of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The brothers were awarded as “Champions des Sports” and “Heroes for Children” for their work. The holder of a doctorate in sport science is married and has three children. In addition, he graduated from the National Academy of Public Administration in Kyiv, holding a Masters Degree in "Managing Social Development". Vitali Klitschko has already been decorated with several awards, among them the Bambi (2005 and 2009), the Goldene Kamera and the German Federal Cross of Merit (2010).
