Abstract An overview of studies of oribatid mites in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše, Czech Republic) from the first records to the present is presented here. The presence of rare and unique species is commented, and the high importance of soil fauna of the Krkonoše Mountains National Park is documented. A list of all known species together with their known localities is presented after a critical revision of published data. The first reliable data on oribatid fauna from the territory of the Giant Mountains are from 1931, but intensive research has only been carried out in the last two decades. Altogether, 216 species of oribatids are known from the territory of the Czech Giant Mountains (Krkonoše National Park) up to the end of 2012. From 71 species recorded from the Polish part of the mountains (Karkonosze National Park), 18 have not yet been found in the Czech park, so the total number of known species from the Giant Mountains reached 234 species. Until recently, four species had only been recorded in the context of the Czech Republic from the Giant Mountains, several others are known only from broader High Sudetes mountain range (2 species) or are characteristic for higher elevations of mountains in general (10 species). Keywords: orbatid mites, Acarina, Oribatida, Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), check-list
Introduction Oribatid mites (Acarina, Oribatida) form one of the most important and species-rich groups of soil microarthropods, belonging to soil mesofauna. Together with springtails (Collembola), they play important
roles in soil ecosystems, contributing to fragmentation and initial degradation of dead organic matter and regulating decomposition processes. Their action also contributes to the creation of soil structure. This contribution is particularly important in the acid conditions of many types of forest litter, where the humus

of the moder form is created. The high number of species – 539 species known from the Czech Republic according to my own recent census, based on published checklists of STARÝ (2000a, b) and later studies – and also the rather broad range of their ecological adaptations make them useful not only for biological diversity studies, but also for bio-indication (RUSEK 2005, MIKO 2009). However, their broader use in bioindication studies was hampered by the absence of comprehensive determination keys and many unresolved taxonomical questions. Traditionally, the older determination keys of German authors were used (SELLNICK 1929, 1960; WILLMANN 1931), but these did not cover the Czech fauna completely and, obviously, did not reflect the latest taxonomical results. The situation partly improved after the publication of modern keys of Czechoslovak genera (KUNST 1971) and determination keys of Russian authors (GHILYAROV & KRIVOLUTSKY 1975). Nevertheless, even these keys did not resolve many existing confusions and unclarities regarding the status of known taxa, synonyms etc. The very comprehensive work of KUNST (1968), which addressed many of those questions, unfortunately remained unpublished. On top of it, even the fauna of the most researched parts of Europe (including the Czech territory) is not yet completely known – new records of the presence are still very common and even new species, unknown to science are still described (eg. MIKO 1993, MIKO & WEIGMANN 1996, WEIGMANN & MIKO 1998, MIKO 2008, MOUREK et al. 2011 etc.). At present, new determination keys, which attempt to reflect the present knowledge, are available for oribatid studies (WEIGMANN 2006), including the parts contributed by myself and addressing otherwise very complex families of Damaeidae and Opiidae (MIKO 2006a, b). Based on this, the research of oribatids will hopefully be boosted and will allow the collection of more precise data on the presence of oribatids in different habitats and ultimately inform about their ecological preferences, so that the use of this very perspective model group in bio-indication could be much broader. Although the knowledge of the oribatid fauna of the Giant Mountains today may be considered as quite sufficient, it was only actually studied in the Czech part of the mountain range by several authors. An overview of these authors as well as a history of these studies is presented in the following chapter. As pro-
viding a history of oribatid studies in the first Czech National park, together with creation of a check-list, represents one of the two main goals of this article, the information is quite detailed. Nevertheless, in general terms it provides a quality demonstration of tes the trends in soil biological research in Central Europe.
History of oribatid studies in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše, Karkonosze, Riesengebirge) The oldest known record of oribatid mites from the territory of the Czech Republic is a report of the presence of the species Hydrozetes lacustris on the Velká Jizerská Louka meadow, a remarkable mountain meadow in close vicinity to the Giant Mountains (ZACHARIAS 1886). Nevertheless, it is remarkable that despite the Giant Mountains being the highest mountains of the Sudetes mountain range and also of the Czech Republic, no data about its oribatid mite fauna were available until second half of the last century. The only exception is a record of Camisia horrida by WILLMANN (1931). The first broader information was published by VANĚK (1957), who recorded 17 species. Much more comprehensive research was conducted by KUNST (1968) at aseries of localities including subalpine and alpine zones of the Giant Mountains, for the first time after the establishment of the Krkonoše National Park in 1963. However, he only recorded the species of particular importance or species which were rarely found in other places in the former Czechoslovakia. Therefore, even if it could be assumed that he collected many more species, he only recorded 45 species not known before from the territory. It has to be noted, that despite this, he was able to find some of the most remarkable species, being unique in the Giant Mountains or very rare in the context of the territory of the Czech Republic, such as Camisia solhoeyi (known at that time as Camisia lapponca), Unduloribates undulatus, Pantelozetes alpestris, Mucronothrus nasalis, Neonothrus humicola, Carabodes tenuis, Trichoribates monticola, Oromurcia sudetica, Mycobates tridactylus and Mycobates carli. It took almost another quarter of a century until the next, rather broadly undertaken research in the Giant Mountains was conducted. In addition to the 63 known species, STARÝ (1994) reported 88 additional species, and laid out quite comprehensive pic-

ture of the fauna of the territory for the first time. The higher number of species he referred to was caused by the still unclear synonymy in some genera, but after recent revision of his data, he documented the overall presence of 151 species on the territory. From these, several were again unique or rarely documented from the whole Czech Republic, e.g. Liochthonius perfusorius, Trimalaconothrus foveolatus, Nothrus longipilus, Phthiracarus affinis, Suctobelba discrepans, Trichoribates rotundatus and Oribatula pallida. Since the work of STARÝ (1994), the research has accelerated and several studies have been conducted (see Figs. 1 and 2). The results of the unpublished thesis of MATERNA (1996) were published later, just before the end of the century (MATERNA 1999), and increased the number of known species to 183, adding 32 additional species to the Giant Mountains fauna. Several works appeared after 2000 and particularly from 2005 (PIŽL & STARÝ 2000, STARÝ 2005, STARÝ & MATĚJKA 2010, 2011), in relation to the research about dynamics of spruce forest ecosystem. Part of this research is unpublished except of reports available on internet. Summing up, the number of known species from Czech part of the Giant Mountains, or the Krkonoše National Park reached 216, which represents 40% of total Czech oribatid fauna. The growth in the numbers of known species obviously resulted from increased sampling efforts, but also thanks to the growing number of researched localities and habitat types. While species reported by VANĚK (1957) were collected at a single locality (Dvorská Bouda chalet), KUNST (1968) added a broad set of 18 localities from both the western and eastern parts of the Giant Mountains, covering mostly alpine and subalpine parts of the National Park and mountain spruce and beech forests. He brought the first information about the oribatids of the peaks of highest elevations (Mt. Sněžka, Mt. Kotel, Pančavská Louka meadow, Kozí Hřbety ridges, Labská Bouda meadow, Mt.Vysoké Kolo), as well as glacial valleys (Obří Důl valley, Velká Studniční Jáma cirque, Kotelní Jámy cirques, Labský Důl valley, Modrý Důl valley), complemented by information from forests near to the upper tree limit and from larger valleys with more human impact (Mt. Černá hora, Patejdlova Bouda enclave, Dolní Mísečky enclave, Dvorský Les forest, Zelený Důl valley, the town of Pec pod Sněžkou, Rudník village).

STARÝ (1994) collected mostly in new localities, but in principle also with a preference for alpine and subalpine vegetation at higher elevations (Mt. Studniční Hora, Pančavská Louka meadow, Schustlerova Zahrádka back garden, Navorská Jáma cirque, Úpská Rašelina peatbog, Labský Důl valley), together with some forested areas and areas with meadows extensively used by humans (Třídomí enclave, Přední Rennerovky enclave, V Bažinkách forest). Altogether he repeated the sampling in 2 already researched areas (Labský Důl valley, Pančavská Louka meadow), and added 7 new localities to the list. The work of MATERNA (1996, 1999) concentrated on the localities on elevation gradient within the Valley of the Bílé Labe river, between the town of Špindlerův Mlýn and Mt. Studniční Hora. He added 5 new localities and repeated the sampling on Mt. Studniční Hora and Mt. Sněžka. Another 10 new localities were investigated between 2000 and 2012 (PIŽL & STARÝ 2001, STARÝ & MATĚJKA 2010, 2011), in addition to repeated sampling at known localities. Altogether, information for this overview was available from 40 localities in the Giant Mountains (Figs. 1 and 3), while repeated sampling occurred only in some of them (Mt. Sněžka, Mt. Studniční Hora, Mt. Vysoké Kolo, Pančavská Louka meadow, Obří Důl valley, Labský Důl valley). To my knowledge, all published records until end of 2012 were included, as well as formally unpublished information (papers, reports) which were available physically (thesis) or via internet. To my knowledge, some projects are still ongoing (Starý Matějka) and new localities may still be investigated in the near future. To complete the overall information on the oribatid fauna of the whole mountain range, the information from the Polish side should be complemented. Based on published check-lists (OLSZANOWSKI et al., 1996, GABRYŚ et al. 2008 and NIEDBAŁA 2012), 71 species were recorded from the Polish Giant Mountains (Karkonosze). From this total, 18 species have not been recorded from the Czech side, which increases the final number of known species from the whole territory of the Giant Mountains to 234 species in all. Nevertheless, all the species known from the Polish part of the mountains and not confirmed from Czech Giant Mountains, are known from the fauna of the Czech Republic, and most probably occur also in the Czech side. The author is aware of much less detailed

information provided on the findings on the Polish side of the Giant Mountains. Unfortunately, Polish checklists do not always report on particular localities within Polish side of the mountains (Karkonosze), and detailed research about localities would be lenghty, burdensome and clearly beyond the scope of the paper. Polish findings are therefore reported below under a simple, all-embracing locality “PL Karkonosze”, which does not aim to show detailed distributions, but rather to illustrate which species could be expected in further research on the Czech territory.
Unique, rare and remarkable oribatid species of the Giant Mountains The importance of the territory of the Giant Mountains for the soil biodiversity is underlined by the high number of species found here. Among them, several are deserving of special attention. While it is not within the scope of this article to analyse the ecological requirements of the species, nor their bioindication values, information about the geographical distribution is relevant from the point of view of biodiversity conservation. Four species have only been recorded in the Giant Mountains within the territory of the Czech Republic: Liochthonius dilutus, Pantelozetes alpestris, Unduloribates undulatus and Mycobates patrius. Anther two species, namely Trichoribates monticola and Mycobates tridactylus were also found in (sub-) alpine zone of the Kralický Sněžník Mts and the Hrubý Jeseník Mts, ie. they are restricted to the mountains of the High Sudetes range. Oromurcia sudetica, Trichoribates rotundatus and Eobrachychthonius latior have a similar distribution within the Czech Republic, but were also found in the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts, belonging to the Carpathians. A group of other species seems to be distributed more broadly in the higher Czech mountains, including in the south and west of the Czech territory, ie. the Šumava Mts and the Novohradské Hory Mts. This group is represented in the Giant Mountains by the species Phthiracarus spadix, Camisia solhoeyi, Platynothrus capillatus, Carabodes tenuis, Suctobelbella vera, Limnozetes rugosus and Mycobates tridactylus. While some of them may prefer specific mountain habitats (high mountain forests, habitats of the subalpine and alpine zones, mountain peat-
147
bogs and mires), other may be present just thanks to better preserved natural habitats generally. This may be also relevant for next group of species, which were found except of the Giant Mountains also outside mountain ranges, but usually in well preserved habitats of other protected areas. This group is represented by e.g. Sellnickochthonius hungaricus, Mucronothrus nasalis, Trimalaconothrus indusiatus, Camisia invenusta, Cultroribula dentata, Suctobelbella baloghi, Suctobelbella hammerae, Siculobata leontonycha and Oribatula pallida. Some of them may have a broader distribution, but may have been misinterpreted in the past, or overlooked. Finally, it should be noted that some of the mentioned species, which are at home in the Giant Mountains and the Krkonoše National Park, were listed on the red list of endangered species of the Czech Republic, namely Camisia solhoeyi, Platynothrus capillatus, Neonothrus humicolus, Unduloribates undulatus and Mucronothrus nasalis. From the zoogeographic point of view, the oribatid fauna of the Giant Mountains represents an island of boreo-montane species within the broader CentralEuropean context. The rare, and in Central Europe, endangered species mentioned above are in most cases common in the northern part of the Palearctic region. Some of these species most probably evolved in high elevations of Central European mountains (particularly the Alps, Carpathians and Sudetes), and are represented by close relatives in the north (e.g. Camisia solhoeyi vs. Camisia lapponica). Nonetheless, the largest group of species are the Palearctic or Western-Palearctic (European) species, some common species (such as Oppiella nova, Tectocepheus velatus) even have a cosmopolitan distribution. Detailed zoogeographical analysis was not attempted, partly also because our knowledge about the distribution of many species is still very fragmented.
Revised checklist of oribatid mites documented in the Giant Mountains In the following list, all known records of oribatid mites from both the Czech and Polish part of the mountains, protected by 2 neighbouring national parks (Krkonošský národní park, Karkonoski Park Naro-

dowy), are given. Czech records are given together with authors (in square parenthesis). Polish records were taken from OLSZANOWSKI et al. (1996), GABRYŚ et al. (2008) and NIEDBAŁA (2012), and are presented in the text under “PL Karkonosze”. Synonyms are presented only for the cases, when the names were used in publications related to the territory of the Czech Republic, or directly to the territory of the Giant Mountains, such as the previous checklist of STARÝ (2000a), or papers which sourced this overview. For the full list of synonyms and system used see WEIGMANN (2006).

MIKO: HISTORY OF ORIBATID STUDIES
Taking into account that common species O. nova was for the long period erroneously interpreted as a synonym of O. neerlandica, most of presented older records very probably refer to O. nova instead Oppiella (Moritzoppia) neerlandica. Unfortunately, identity of older findinfg cannot be checked, the species is nevertheless present in Giant Mountains. Only recent records can be reliably considered as proved. Chamobates tricuspidatus Willmann, 1953 = Chamobates birulai According to Weigmann (2006) these are identical species and the names are synonyms. The presence of two different, morphologically so similar species with the same development of the rostrum in Central Europe is indeed highly improbable. The synonymy is therefore accepted here, despite traditional use of the name tricuspidatus in our literature, based on the interpretation of Kunst (1968). MIKO: HISTORY OF ORIBATID STUDIES
Acknowledgements The author is deeply grateful to all colleagues, who helped in the collection of all data available from the territory of the Czech Republic, and particularly to colleague and friend Dr. Josef Starý who provided part of his unpublished information. Mgr. Jan Mourek helped by consulation and comments during the work on the checklist of the species of the Czech Republic, which served as a basis for this overview.
