Sigmund Freud
6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939 Physician, psychologist, founder of psychoanalysis
2
Life and Work Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Příbor. When he was 3, his family moved to Vienna due to poor economic conditions, where he graduated with honours from secondary school and consequently from the Faculty of Medicine of Vienna University. He worked a short time at the Internal Medicine Unit of Vienna General Hospital, then he became a worker of Professor Meynert at the Psychiatric Unit. He was the only one from seven applicants who gained scholarship with Professor J. M. Charcot in France at that time. After his return he opened a private surgery for treating neural disorders and lectured at university, where he was designated an associate professor of neural pathology in 1885. At the time when Austria was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1938 he immigrated to Great Britain, where he died on 23 September 1939 in London. For the treatment of patients with unknown reasons for their neurosis, Freud often used the method of hypnotic suggestion promoted at that time by the French physician Bernheim. Freud´s personality theory is still applied in psychological practice and his pieces of knowledge in the field of the influence of childhood experiences on behaviour in adulthood are also topical. There are no doubts about his conclusions on the influence of the unconscious on a person´s behaviour and the importance of the interpretation of dreams and free associations for the treatment of patients as well as his conclusions, rejected at that time, in the
field of sexual determination of human behaviour, experiencing and mental development. His most famous works include the Studies on Hysteria (1895), Self-analysis (1897) and the Interpretation of Dreams (1900). He later wrote some works, where he applied psychoanalysis on the interpretation of social life, such as Totem and Taboo, etc. Sigmund Freud is a native of the MoravianSilesian Region, who only lived here in his early childhood, yet we can find many places in his native town, where we can learn a lot of interesting information about him and his work. Visit Příbor and the Native House of Sigmund Freud with the permanent exposition about his personality, the Memorial Hall of Sigmund Freud in the Museum in the Piarist Monastery or the Monument of Sigmund Freud.

NATIVE HOUSE OF SIGMUND FREUD The native house of Sigmund Freud was reconstructed according to the design of architect Zdeněk Tupý in the spirit of the 2nd half of the 19th century and opened to the public in 2006. In front of the house there is a copper reproduction of Freud´s examination sofa – a life-size work of art.

Locations
In the native house there is an exposition called “Sigmund Freud – a Human” which aims to introduce Freud as a physician and scientist, but especially as a man who loved humour. At the entry each visitor receives headphones and is accompanied by the voice of Sigmund Freud “himself”. The plot of the exposition is based on a fictional personal story of this important person who returns to his native Příbor in his declining years. He recalls the fateful and decisive moments of his life and personal career, which he recollects when walking through his native house and by doing so he familiarizes the visitor with specific facts of his personal and profession life. He makes it possible to look into his inner feelings and more easily understand the methods of his scientific work. Freud´s relationship to humour as the spice of life is shown by caricatures drawn by Vladimír Jiránek. “Freud´s Vice” Cigars Freud was a chain smoker of cigars and he did not stop even during the larynx cancer of which he died. Chocolate cigars were launched for the first time at the occasion of the 150-year anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud. Candied fruit is soused in pepper or chilli and covered with chocolate in the shape of cigars. They are not hot, they just have a spicy taste like tobacco flavour. They are also made with a plum and rum filling.

Příbor Freud Liquor Near Freud´s native house herbal liquors were manufactured and it is said that his father was one of the tasters. Mrs. Jana Karbanová found one of the old recipes in an old house on Příbor Square and this is the reason why this herbal liquor, which is not only tasteful, but also slightly erotic, has been manufactured here. Janáček came from a family of craftsmen and teachers who were traditionally connected with the Tešín Region, the Frýdek Region and the Příbor Region. His grandfather was born in Frýdek in 1778. He was a teacher in Albrechtičky, a very good organist and a recognized gardener. Since 1848, when Janáček´s father Jiří moved here with his family, Hukvaldy, where Leoš Janáček was born on 3 July 1854, has also been connected with the family of Janáček. He attended the comprehensive school in his native town (1856 – 1859), where he soon learnt about the natural beauties as well as the hard life in the Lachian Region. From early childhood he played music, sang in the gallery and played the piano. When he was eleven, his father sent him to the Old Brno Foundation, where Pavel Křížkovský worked at that time. He continued his studies at the Natural Science Grammar School in Brno, at the Teacher Institute, the Skuherský Organ School in Prague, the conservatoire in Leipzig and Vienna. After his studies he returned to Brno, where he took part in national-liberation activities. He became Headmaster of the organ school, worked as a conductor and soon started his career as a composer. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, he worked as a professor of the Brno branch of the Prague Conservatoire Master School. He was active not only as a composer, but he also aroused attention by original literary drafts and theoretical music works, where he published the results of his study of artistic and folk music. He dealt with the constant study and collecting of the Moravian folk songs together with the dialectologist František Bartoš and he
was recognized as a leading expert on Moravian music demography. After the state takeover he was designated a professor of the Prague Conservatory Master School (1919), a member of the Music Advisory Board at the Ministry of Education and National Enlightenment, a member of the Czech Academy (1912), the Prussian Academy of Art (1927), a corresponding member of the School of Slavonic Studies in London (1928), the chairman of the Club of Moravian Composers (1919), a member of the majority of important Czech music unions and corporations, the preserver of musical monumental works, etc.
Life and Work Leoš Janáček belongs among the most important and most brilliant composers of Czech and modern world music and his works spread to the leading centres of world music, particularly to England and German-speaking countries during his life. His major works were honoured by national prizes and awards of the Czech Academy. He dealt intensively with the study and collection of folk songs, especially in his native town, but he also collected in Mniší, Tichá, Čeladná, Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, Kozlovice, in the Vsetín Region and near Valašské Meziříčí. He also collected songs in the vicinity of Luhačovice and in Slovakia. During his wanders round various regions he met many musicians, singers and dancers, he wrote comprehensive essays about folklore and he even participated in the preparation of the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. He published the collections Hukvaldy Folk Poetry in Songs and Moravian Folk Poetry in Songs. 4 1

When collecting folk songs, Janáček also observed the tone cadence of human speech, he started recording the folk speech, his melodies of speech intonation were created, which became part of his composing method and were of decisive importance for his opera works. Janáček´s operas are currently performed with great response worldwide. Her Step-daughter (Její pastorkyňa), Katia Kabanova (Káťa Kabanová), the Cunning Little Vixen (Liška Bystrouška) and From the House of the Dead (Z mrtvého domu) belong among the most successful performances abroad and have become paramount events of theatre seasons. We also meet the distinctive composition style of Leoš Janáček in his choruses. He composed Choruses for Men´s Voices on the words of Petr Bezruč – Marycka Magdonova (Maryčka Magdonová), Teacher Halfar (Kantor Halfar) and 70,000 for the famous Moravian Teachers Choir. His symphonic compositions Taras Bulba, the Ballad of Blanik (Balada blanická) and especially Sinfonietta are also known worldwide. The Glagolitic Mass (Glagolská mše) for soloists, mixed 5 choir, orchestra and organ written by Janáček when he was 72 years old is considered one of the most beautiful compositions of world music. The composition work embodied in a frequent repetition of motives, fragmentation and dramatic abbreviation as well as the art of sequences reached its climax in this work.

1 Hukvaldy Leoš Janáček loved his native Hukvaldy. Even though he only lived there for eleven years of his childhood and then his next home was Brno, he liked returning to his native town his whole life. He came there on summer holidays and at Christmas and in the early years of his life he preferred travelling there alone. He looked forward to peace, his beloved nature and sincere people and neighbours. Sketches and final parts of Janáček´s top works the Stories of the Cunning Little Vixen (Příhody lišky Bystroušky), the Macropulos Case (Věc Makropulos), symphonies the Danube (Dunaj), Rhymes (Říkadla), Lachian Dances (Lašské tance), Youth (Mládí), both string quartets and the majority of his literary works – Feuilleton Columns, have their origin there.

2 NATIVE HOUSE OF LEOŠ JANÁČEK IN HUKVALDY A reminder of the birth of Leoš Janáček is a bronze memorial plaque with a relief of the composer placed on the frontage of the former comprehensive school house in Hukvaldy. It was revealed in 1926 and it says: “To the genius of Czech music PhDr. Leoš Janáček born in this house on 3 July 1854 from the grateful municipality”. Nowadays, the house is the seat of the Information Centre, Janáček´s native room (the room, where Janáček was born, is open to the public and equipped with period pictures), a gallery, the Senior’s Club and the seat of the civic association Janáček´s Hukvaldy Fund.

The composer confesses in the acknowledgements to the municipal committee as follows: “You know I cling with all my soul to our little cottages, the forests, to everything as it is in Hukvaldy!” In 1905 his brother bought a small house there but he died three years later. His wife sold the house to her brother-in-law Leoš. A permanent dweller in the house was his divorced sister Josefa. Janáček changed the house to his relaxation seat, had electricity installed in it and later he started an extension of the upper room. He bequeathed the house with the forest, field and garden in his will to the municipality of
Locations Hukvaldy and added the amount of CZK 20,000 for maintenance. The composer´s wife Zdenka, who opened the house to the public in 1933, had a lifelong right to the use of the house. At first, it was open only at important events or for previously announced visits. During the war up until 1945 the family of the gendarme constable lived there, then since 1948 the family of teacher Petr Eliáš. During their stay the interior was partly modified. Today´s owner is the Leoš Janáček Foundation which overhauled the entire premises and while doing so it tried to approximate the appearance of the house as much as possible to the state when Leoš Janáček left it in 1928. The exposition can be divided into a historical section and an educational exposition. The historical section consists of three rooms on the ground floor of the house, where the original interior including the equipment from the times of Janáček´s use is preserved. Visitors can see a salon, a bedroom and a kitchen. The educational exposition refers to the composer´s stays in Hukvaldy, it maps his relationship to the native town and documents the connection of this place with Janáček´s work. We can find there photographs from Janáček´s life, letters, notes, note records, costume drafts for the opera Stories of the Cunning Little Vixen and many other things. Visitors can listen to the top recordings of Janáček´s compositions or see musical films about the composer´s life and work in the newly created audiovisual room on the 1st floor. 4 JANÁČEK´S BENCH In 1925 and 1926 Leoš Janáček bought the forest he liked to walk in. Gamekeeper Vincenc Sládek took care of it and also built a small bench for him at Babí hůra, where Janáček used to sit and look upon the countryside. In 1994, the place around the bench was arranged and a stone with a memorial plaque, which has the same inscription as the one at the Janáček Memorial, was placed on the wall which was built behind the bench.

6 GAME PRESERVE, THE MEMORIAL OF THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN The oldest Czech game preserve spreads over approximately 440ha and was founded in 1556. In the current game preserve with beautiful alleys of oaks, chestnuts and lindens, which is home to large herds of moufflons and fallow deer, visitors can also admire a group of 7 European beeches (Fagus sylvatica) which are about 150-years old. Their roots are bare in the steep slope due to erosion and reach a height of up to 8m. The game preserve is entered through a gate with a significant archbishop coat of arms. From there the path leads to the Memorial of the Cunning Little Vixen, which reminds us of the famous opera of Leoš Janáček. Upon closer look, it has a worn smooth tail and snout – stroking it can cause a secret wish to come true. It is also said that when a young woman touches its tail, she will soon become pregnant. The Cunning Little Vixen is situated at the crossing of the yellow tourist mark, the red marked walking circle and educational path Janáček Path and Castle Hill (Hradní vrch). There is an amphitheatre near there and you can walk up to the ruins of Hulkvaldy Castle, which is situated in the northeast.
7 HUKVALDY CASTLE The name of the castle is derived from the name of the Rhenish Count line Hückeswagen, who built it in the 1st half of the 13th century. Soon after its foundation it became part of the property of the Olomouc bishops and
in addition to the fortification function, it was also important as an administrative seat of the extensive domain. It belongs among the biggest castles in Moravia and it has never been seized. Unfortunately, in 1792 it burnt out and gradually started to decay. Nowadays, we can
see these romantic ruins alone or with a guide, the entrance fee is for the whole day during regular opening hours. The silhouette of the castle is characterized by long castle walls interrupted by towers, which exceed the remains of residential buildings. The castle is entered through the gate broken in the inclined castle wall of the west bastion protecting the entry together with a moat and the necessary drawbridge. From the courtyard of the castle core there is access to the partly roofed palace, cellars, a dungeon and several cells. The castle core also includes a viewing tower from which it is possible to see the vast surroundings during favourable weather conditions.

John Amos Comenius
28 March 1592 – 15 November 1670 Pedagogue, philosopher, writer, theologist and the last Bishop of the Unity of the Brethren
14
Life and Work John Amos Comenius was born on 28 March 1592, most probably in Nivnice. After his studies in Strážnice, Přerov, Heidelberg and Herborn he became a teacher at schools in Přerov and Fulnek. He also worked as a Brethren priest and the congregation administrator in Fulnek. After the defeat of the Czech Uprising of the Estates in 1621 he was forced to leave Fulnek and in 1628 he left for exile in Polish Lešno. He worked there until 1656 (with the exception of the years 1641 – 1642 and 1642 – 1648), when he was first called to England and London and then he wrote textbooks in the Swedish service in Elbink and taught at the grammar school in Šaryšský potok. In 1656 after the capturing of Lešno by the Swedes and the fire in the town he left for Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he died on 15 November 1670. He is buried in Naarden and his museum is also there. The most famous works of J. A. Comenius are his textbooks Orbis Pictus (The Visible World in Pictures) and Janua Linguarum Reserata (The Gate of Tongues Unlocked) in addition to the most important pansophic work De rerum humanarum emedatione consultatio catholica (General Consultation on an Improvement of All Things Human) from 1658. The Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart (Labyrint světa a ráj srdce, 1623) written in Czech is considered the most beautiful Czech book. The most famous works of his Fulnek period are Letters to Heaven (Listové do nebe, 1619) and the Map of Moravia (1624). He also started work there on the Treasure of the Czech Language (Poklad jazyka českého), Didactica Magna (The Great Didactic) and The
Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart. “All of us are standing on the single stage of the huge world and everything that is done relates to everybody” – this is a wise, apt and still valid quotation from the work of the world thinker, theologist, Bishop of the Unity of the Brethren, pedagogue and politician who strived for peace among nations suffering from the curse of the Thirty Years´ War. Comenius´s pedagogical legacy in the form of compulsory school attendance and the emphasis on independent work of pupils, particularly the study of languages, is recognized worldwide. His pedagogical principles and procedures, namely clearness and motivation in teaching, are still being applied in upbringing and education not only in our country, but in many countries of the world. The spiritual work of this giant also lived in our region, where in Fulnek, as he said, he spent the happiest three years of his life (1618 – 1621). At that time, thanks to his merit, other Brethren schools flourished in the region of Nový Jičín which helped in educating the youth.

A. COMENIUS In Fulnek there are three forms of artistic interpretation of the figure of Comenius. A bronze sculpture by Jan Štursa is situated in the park in front of the Memorial of J. A. Comenius. Originally, it should have been placed opposite to the sculpture of John Hus by Myslbek in the auditorium of the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. Another one is the sculpture by Jan Pelikán, which was revealed at the occasion of opening the first Czech school in Fulnek (The Comprehensive School in Czech Street). In the
Pupils´ Park there is an obelisk with a memorial plaque devoted to J. A. Comenius (one of the first works of Olbram Zoubek). 3

He probably visited the local Brethren congregation in Nový Jičín at the place of the current post office in K Nemocnici Street. Museum of the Moravian Brethren in Suchdol The Museum of the Moravian Brethren who drew from the legacy of Comenius at the times of recatholisation and in 1772 founded the town of Ochranov (meaning the place under God´s protection) in Upper Lusatia, today´s Germany. Ochranov became the seat of the new Church of the Unity of Brethren (protective), more known as the Moravian Brethren (Moravští bratři) throughout the world. The museum is a preserved, typical, small homestead of the Moravian Kravaře Region with a closed yard, a residential building on the right and farm buildings on the left. You can see there how people lived and worked in the Kravaře Region a hundred years ago. In
the ground floor of the residential part there is an exposition on the events which preceded the mass exile at the times of counterreformation and at the times of the spiritual awakening in the Kravaře Region in 1723 – 1724. The life-interest part is devoted to the following personalities: David Nitschmann, the first Bishop of the Unity of Brethren, Melchior Zeisberger and Johann Münster. Life and Work Johann Gregor Mendel was born in Hynčice u Oder on 20 July 1822. After his studies at Piarists in Lipník nad Bečvou, Opava and Olomouc he entered the Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas in Old Brno. He lived there his whole life. First, he became a priest and then the abbot of this monastery (in 1868 – 1884). He carried out his experiments with crossing peas and other plants in the garden of the monastery during which he discovered the laws of heredity. He presented the results of his research Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden (1865) to the Brno Moravian-Silesian Association for Ploughing Improvement, Natural Science and Homeland Study, but without success. The benefits of his researches were only found after his death independently by three researchers Hugo de Vries, Erich von Tschermark and Carl Correns. J. G. Mendel studied at Vienna University in 1851 – 1853, taught at the Grammar School
1
in Znojmo and the Natural Science Grammar School in Brno until 1868 and carried out meteorological monitoring and experiments with the heredity of bee markings as a member of the Beekeepers’ Union until 1869. He died in Brno on 8 January 1884.

MUNICIPALITY OF VRAŽNÉ The history of the village dates back to the 13th and 14th century. The territory of Vražné has three local sections – Vražné, Hynčice and Emauzy. The originally independent village Hynčice was mentioned for the first time in 1374. Historic sights include the Church of St. Peter and Paul built in 1798 – 1799 at the place of an old wooden church and it was consecrated in 1799. It is the church where Mendel was baptized in 1822.

NATIVE HOUSE OF J. G. MENDEL The native house of J. G. Mendel in Vražné, a local section of Hynčice, has been open to the public as a small exposition since 1965. In 2007, a complete reconstruction of the native village farmstead was completed as the Visitor Centre of the Moravské Kravařsko Countryside Region. The complex also includes a museum exposition focused on the native region, personality and work of J. G. Mendel, but also on the present – the breakthrough of his inventions in genetics, in the breeding science of the present and the future. Near this house there is a fire brigade house, of which Mendel contributed to the repair, and an old school which Mendel had attended. Native House of J. G. Mendel – the Charity Fund (Rodný dům J. G. It is the place where a granite memorial of J. G. Mendel weighing 16 tons is placed. It represents the miracle of the creation – a man with a woman and a child are standing on the calyx of a flower symbolizing harmony and beauty. A small genius in the appearance of a boy stretches his hands to the couple and celebrates the miracle of life. On the other side, the degenerated figures of a woman and a man remind us of the injurious consequences of not observing the laws of heredity. Their discoverer was J. G. Mendel, whose granite bust became a central point of the memorial. The author of the monumental group of sculptures from 1931 is the well-known Silesian sculptor Josef Obeth.

Locations 1 MONUMENT OF FRANTIŠEK PALACKÝ IN HODSLAVICE The native house of František Palacký, a national cultural monument, is also the seat of the Monument of František Palacký. A memorial plaque was placed on the scientist´s native house to commemorate the one-hundred year anniversary of his birth in 1898. Based on the initiatives of the Svatobor society, which dated back to 1886, the house was permanently opened to the public in 1948. The present exposition shows the life and work of this famous founder of Czech professional historiography. An interesting piece of the exposition is a genealogic tree of František Palacký´s ancestors. In front of the native house of František Palacký there is his sculpture by the academic sculptor V. Navrátil, which was revealed at the occasion of the 170th anniversary of his birth in 1968.
