Abstract In 2007 to 2009 we examined 32 paintings by F. von Amerling using a non-invasive X-ray fluorescence method. The collection of samples was significantly limited as paintings were not in the process of restoration; thus we only collected samples from bent edges of canvas. Two thirds of the examined paintings fall into the peak period of the Amerling´s work, i.e. 1830s and 1840s. We found out that he used mainly two types of grounds – oil white and also a two-layer oil ground consisting of a bottom clay-based (earthy) layer and a top light layer. We also found out that he did not change his favorite palette of pigments in that period (Naples and mixed Pb-Sb-Sn yellows, cobalt blue etc.) He used zinc white only later - in the eighteen fifties. Further, we compared three portraits of the Hilleprand von Prandau aristocratic family painted by Amerling, specifically two portraits of countess Marianne Norman - Ehrenfels (from the Spišské museum in Levoča, Slovakia, and from the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, Croatia), and a portrait of Marianne´s sister, countess Alvine, née baroness Hilleprand von Prandau (from the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, Croatia). The comparison of the paintings suggests that the portrait of Marianne from Levoča (so far without a definite datation) was painted earlier than the portrait of the same person from the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek) (1951) and it definitely was not made as a copy of the latter, as it had been reported in literature. key words: Friedrich von Amerling, painting technique, materials investigation, portraits of countesses Marianne and Alvine Hilleprand von Prandau
Introduction
The popular portraitist of high aristocracy, Friedrich von Amerling, (*14.4.1803 Vienna - †14.1.1887 Vienna) studied at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts in 1816-1824 with H. Maurer and K. Gsellhofer. Details of his study at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts are not clear and he might have been influenced by the Academy headmaster, J. Bergler jr. In 1827 he visited England and studied there works by J. Reynolds, T. Gainsborough and also T. Lawrence. During his stay in London he consulted his work particularly with Thomas Lawrence and his beginnings were From 1824 one of the prominent students at the Prague school was allegedly Friedrich Amerling. According to the biographic tradition, this prospective leading Austrian portraitist was not satisfied with the Viennese Academy, nevertheless he is not listed in the registry of the Prague school.“ Prahl R.: Historický Evropský kontext. (Historical European Context) In: Posedlost kresbou – Počátky Akademie umění v Praze 1800 – 1835 (Obsessed with drawing – Beginnings of the Academy of Arts in Prague 1800 -1835), Prague, 1998, page 12.
strongly influenced by the latter. In 1828 he visited Paris and he also stayed in Italy and Holland. In 1832 he became a member of the Viennese Academy. Later he worked in Munich and visited Zagreb. In 1865 he stopped in Prague on the way to Dresden. In 18821887 he made study journeys to Spain, Italy, England, Holland and Germany; he also visited Constantinople, Greece, Egypt, Palestine and Norway. From 2007 we examined 32 paintings from 1826 -1878, allegedly painted by Fridrich von Amerling, from which we excluded three paintings based on the painting expression and the used materials. One of them was e.g. a copy of the Amerling´s work of art Archduke Franz Josef with a flag made in the 19th century by means of a reproduction technique using Grabner S.: Friedrich von Amerling 1803-1887, Eine Ausstellung der Österreichischen Galerie Belvedere, Wien (26.3.22.7. 2003) Vienna 2003, page 8-9

a photographic emulsion (anaplas/anaplast). It is a period technique which used photographic principles in combination with painting. Some painters used it to make their work easier and instead of underdrawing and underpainting they exposed a snapshot on a support. Then they used exposed snapshot as an underdrawing and painted over it with various paints (water- and oil-based etc.). An overview of Amerling´s paintings is provided in Table 1. We mapped particularly works available on the territory of the Czech Republic; for the purposes of comparison we also examined some works of art in Slovakia and Croatia. Most of the paintings came from collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The paintings were exposed to examination of the painting expression, artistic style and painting technique. For material investigation we used nondestructive portable X-ray florescence and, thanks to the kindness and understanding of the owners, we were also able to collect small samples from bent edges of the canvases. Thus it was possible to compare also the ground layers of the paintings. The purpose of the efforts was to determine whether the material and technical characteristics of paintings made by Friedrich von Amerling change throughout his creative period. One historical curiosity is the existence of two very similar portraits of countess Marianne NormannEhrenfels, née baroness Hilleprand von Prandau. The first paintings, now owned by the Gallery of Fine Arts (Galerije likovnich umjetnosti) in Osijek, Croatia, has been described in literature – it is specifically mentioned in the list of works by F. von Amerling in the book by G. Probszt, in which it is According to Otto´s encyclopedia from 1908 (http:// encyklopedie. Seznam.cz/heslo/ 385705-anaplas): „Anaplas, a reproductive technique for artistic copies of paintings. Canvas is covered with a sensitive layer called (Anaplas), on which an illuminated original is reflected and it creates a copy which cannot be discerned from the original. It was invented by two Frenchmen, Revillon and Domer, and the secret of the method was bought by an American company (Anaplas). Only one picture can be produced from one exposure.“ Anaplast: http://www.mariepospisilova.com/Slabiny.html, in literature it is often referred to as “the painted photograph“, “photograph on canvas“ Bünsche B.: Wenn Fotografien zu Gemälden werden Malund drucktechnische Aspekte, Restauro 2/95, 1995, s. 110-115 Gol, P., Ambruš, J. dated in 1851. The history of the origin of the second painting, held by Spišské museum in Levoča, Slovakia, is not completely unclear. Based on the information available, the painting comes from Spišský Hrhov, the property of the Csáky aristocratic family. Is it a copy of the painting from Osijek, as reported by Branka Balen?
Methods of materials investigation
We used a non-invasive method - portable X-ray fluorescence - to determine the elemental composition on the painted surface. We selected the mobile method particularly because the paintings were located in various places and they were available for investigation at different times in 2007-2009. The opportunities to take samples were strictly limited as the paintings were not in the process of restoration. Wherever possible, samples were taken from the bent edges of canvas, often without any painting. Non-invasive X-ray fluorescence
The measurements were performed with a portable analyzer X-MET 3000TXR (Rh anode, 40 kV), with a semi-conductor detector with resolution 230250 eV. When measuring in the air (120 s/min.) the detection is guaranteed from the atomic weight of 40 (Ca). The distance from the painting surface in the measuring points was ca. 2-3 mm. Organic colorants (indigo, alizarin etc.) and pigments based on light elements (e.g. ultramarine, fluorite, bone and carbon blacks) cannot be identified by this device. Some pigments cannot be specified more accurately, e.g. only based on the content of Fe (earths or Prussian blue) etc. The non- invasive method of X-ray fluorescence enables fast screening of elemental composition on the whole surface of the paintings (Fig. 1, Tab. 2). Preparation of microsamples
Fragments collected from the paintings were embedded into polyester resin Neukadur. Polished crosssections were prepared on the grinder Kompakt 1031. The observation was performed with the microscope

Identification of organic substances
Infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformation (FTIR) in combination with histochemical tests (Fuchsin S, methylene blue, Lugol´s solution etc.) were used to identify organic substances. Fragments and their polished cross-sections were measured in the Polymer Institute in Brno with the infrared microscope Kontinuum, with microspectrometer Nexus (Thermo Nicolet, USA), in the reflective mode, in the range 4000–650 cm-1 with the resolution of 4 cm-1 and the spectra were evaluated with Omnic 7.2 (Thermo Electron Co.) software. In order to verify occurrence of proteins we used matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI TOF MS). The measurements were performed in the Institute of Biochemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague.
Discussion of results Support
We identified canvas, carton, paper on canvas-backed carton or canvas-backed paper. The density of the coarsest canvas was 11x10 / cm2. Otherwise the painter used finely woven canvas ca. 17x18 / cm2 (Tab. 1). Grounds
Based on materials analyses of samples from 21 paintings we determined that three types of grounds were used in the concerned set of paintings (Tab. 3). Type 1: A light, oil-bonded ground, containing white lead and barium white, dolomite, calcium carbonate, quartz and also an admixture of brown or red earths. The “yellowish” coloration is caused by mineral barite and dolomite in oil and also by the final tinting with earths. This ground was found in 11 paintings on canvas and in 1 painting on paper on canvas-backed carton (Tab. 3, Fig. 2 A, B, C). Type 2: A two-layer oil-bonded ground, in the bottom layer with predominance of iron earths and with an admixture of dolomitic chalk, white lead and barium white (in various relative proportions), and in the upper layer with white lead and barium white, dolomite and quartz (in various relative proportions); in a later stage the painter sometimes added zinc white. It has often happened that the individual coats of ground (light and yellow) have separated from each other which may cause problems for the restoration process. This ground was found in seven paintings on canvas (Tab. 3, Fig. 3A, B). Type 3: A light oil-bonded ground consisting of white lead and calcium carbonate. This ground was found on 2 paintings, on carton and on canvasbacked paper (Tab. 3).

The binding agent in light ground of type 1 is positively oil-based – it is probably linseed oil. The binding agent in the yellow layer of the two-layer ground is also oil-based. Presence of proteins was excluded in the layers of grounds for types 1 and 2 by analyzing fragments with mass spectroscopy MALDI-TOF. According to the newly acquired data it is possible to correct the information available in literature. E. Stöbe reports that oil–based grounds were typical for Amerling, containing white lead and linseed oil (boiled oil), more or less with an admixture of chalk and without glue. A variant of this light ground was allegedly yellowish – as a result of ageing - “half ” oilbased ground (glue : oil = 2:1). Before applying the oil-based ground the canvas was painted with a glue insulation to prevent the oil from soaking into the canvas base. The light oil-based ground would then correspond to the type 1, however its composition is in fact more varied (white lead and barium white, dolomite, calcium carbonate and earths); no variant with a glue was found. Further, the author described a double-layer ground the so-called “Viennese ground” without any detailed identification, which made the canvas smoother – this description might correspond to the type 2 (however, the author fails to identify its accurate composition). The author also mentioned the allegedly least frequent Italian type gesso - ground with Bologna chalk – calcium sulfate and rabbit-skin glue. However, this Italian type of the ground was not found in our set of paintings. Also the information that all types of ground were purchased, as in the v 19th century there were workshops specialized in their making, is not accurate. In some cases we found clear evidence of manual coating of canvas, where the ground ended exactly in line with the painting10 – e.g. in portraits of Marianne and Alvine Hilleprand von Prandau in Osijek. The surface of the ground was not often evenly spread. Also the thickness of individual coats of the double-layer ground varied. Concerning the information that the canvas was sold ready on a frame we would like to add that paintings often continued beyond the frame, e.g. in the Self-portrait from the District Gallery in Liberec. It was possible to buy a canvas with a ground or stretched on a bottom frame but it may have been put on a smaller frame by the artist (or later when it was restored). Painter´s pallet
On the portraits we could base the identification of pigments practically only on results of portable X Stöbe E. ray fluorescence. With the exception of eight samples the collected fragments from edges of the paintings failed to contain any color layer. The composition of pigments in the color layer of all examined paintings is summarized in table 2 and 3. It indicates that Amerling used in all cases white lead, cinnabar and earths, containing mostly also Mn. For light yellow he most frequently used Naples or mixed Pb-Sb-Sn yellows. The mixed yellow is Naples yellow, modified with tin in its structure. The method of its preparation is different; in Vienna it was probably taken over from the technology to produce paints for porcelain decoration.11 In 1850s cadmium yellow appeared in one case as an alternative to lead yellows. In three cases in total chrome yellow was identified but it was in a mixture with Prussian blue as the so-called chrome green (Tab. 3) and in one case with cadmium yellow. Other blue pigments were cobalt blue and ultramarine. The scope of application of Prussian blue and ultramarine in the works by F. von Amerling may be higher because the method of mobile X-ray fluorescence measured in the air cannot be used to identify those two pigments. A sample needs to be taken for their positive identification. The oldest paintings, in which we identified cobalt blue, are portrait of the younger brother Josef (1830) from Moravian Gallery in Brno and two portraits of Ferdinand Maria von Chotek (1833,1835) from the Archbishop´s Office in Olomouc. Meanwhile, the use of cobalt blue before 1840 is very rare as this pigment was one of the most expensive. Still, Amerling used it throughout his whole period of artistic production. Green pigments based on Cu appeared only exceptionally, e.g. Schweinfurt green in the later works. It is possible to expect a broader use of carbon and ivory blacks, chalk and dolomitic chalk. Glazing Cassel brown was indirectly identified based on the typical structure of crackles. 11 Mixed yellow was used from the 16th century in Italy jointly with the Naples yellow. Moioli P., Secaroni C. (2007): The correct interpretation of the presence of antimony in yellow pigments.- Non-destructive and Microanalytical Techniques in Art and Cultural Heritage. Technart 2007, April 25-28, Lisboa, Portugal, p. 89-90. It was increasingly used again in the 19th century, particularly in paintings made at the Viennese academy; the pigment was primarily used for decoration of porcelain. Occurrence of the above-mentioned pigments in the examined paintings is rather accidental or statistically little significant – Amerling throughout his artistic life did not change his preferences in selecting pigments. The Amerling´s profile as a rather conservative painter is in conformity with his selection of whites. Although zinc white had been known as early as after 1834, Amerling discovered it for his works only in the 1850s. This is also the only well-datable change in the composition of pigments on Amerling paintings. Still, zinc white never replaced white lead completely, but it rather complemented it – the reason was its transparency in a mixture with oil. For the first time it appeared on the portrait of Alvine Pejacsević from the gallery in Osijek (1852) (Fig. 4). We noticed an increased occurrence of Zn also in the painting of the field marshal Alfred prince Windischgrätz from the National Heritage Institute in Pilsen, dated in 1856, now in Kladruby u Stříbra. According to T. Štumbauer, the painting was never restored.12 In a microsample from the painting Man with a beret, not signed, oil on canvas, from 1857, from the National Heritage Authority for Central Bohemia, Žleby, zinc white was found in a low concentration in both layers of the double-layer ground (Fig. 3A, B). This painting was painted in Vienna for Karl Vincenc Auersperg and it is now in the Gallery of Ancestors at the castle of Žleby. G. Probst describes the location of the painting in 1927 at the castle of Žleby, owned by prince Franz Josef Auersperg.13 Zn was identified along with cadmium yellow on a yellow silk scarf around the collar on the Self-Portrait14 dated in 1857.15 Cadmium yellow, along with zinc white, was found also in a polished cross-section of the greenish background exceeding the painting´s edge. 12 Although the paining was transported to the Ministry of Culture in Prague, according to Mgr. T. Štumbauer from the National Heritage Authority in Pilsen, it was never restored, as Marie Christine, duchess of Kent, had been trying to buy it. However, the government finally rejected the request. There are no documents available about any restoration of the painting 13 Probszt G.: Friedrich von Amerling, Der Altmeister der Wiener Porträtmalerei, Amalthea Verlag, Zürich, Leipzig, Wien, 1927, in the list of works by F. Amerling from the Viennese period the painting is listed in 1857 under No. 935 on page 146. 14 In the microsample from the bent edge of the painting, the backdrop, the identified pigments included zinc white, Prussian blue, cadmium yellow, red organic pigment, ivory black and earth pigments. The painting was also restored and a minor admixture of ZnO was found in the surface varnish. Two paintings of countess Marianne Normann-Ehrenfels
As mentioned earlier in the introduction, an interesting historical comparison within the examined set of artworks can be made between two portraits of one young lady (Figs. 5, 6, 7) – noblewoman – countess Marianne Normann-Ehrenfels, née baroness Hilleprand von Prandau (1828- 1891). Her father was Anton Gustav (1807 - 1885), imperial and royal chamberlain and secret counsel, and her mother was Adelheide née Cseh von Szent - Kátolna (now Catalina in Romania) (1813 - 1864). She spent her childhood at the castle Prandau-Normann from the middle of the 18th century in Valpovo, in Slavonia, Croatia, built by their ancestors who had come from the Vienna district. The castle was a permanent seat of the family. Marianne had three siblings: younger sister Alvine, Stephanie and brother Koloman. In 1846 Marianne married imperial and royal chamberlain, duke Albert Pavel Zichy de Zich et Vásonykeö , who died in 1850. Two years later she married again (on 15 April 1852) – her second husband was Heinrich Friedrich Constantin Normann- Ehrenfels von SachsenheimWürtenberg (1818- 1882) – and she lived with him in the municipality Bizovac. She had three children with her husband– Rudolf, Gustav and Anna – and she had very ardent relationships with them. Countess Marianne Normann - Ehrenfels died in 1891 in Vienna - Oberdöbling and was buried in the family tomb in the chapel of St. Rocco in Valpovo.16 Style and historical analysis
The Portrait of Marianne (Fig. 5) from the collections of the Spišské museum in Levoča is an oil painting on canvas, sized 87x72 cm, and not signed. In 1946 it was registered in the collections of the museum under the Inventory No. 3323. The canvas is stretched on the original bottom frame, the painting was not relined. The painting surface is covered with a fine network of crackles (e.g. in the area of the face). In literature the painting was mentioned by Grabne16 Balen B.: Dva portreta Friedricha Amerlinga iz fundusa Galerije likovnih umjetnosti u Osijeku., Zwei Bildnisse der Friedrich Amerling aus dem Bestand der Galerie der bildenden Künste in Osijek VDG JAHRBUCH 2005, 75,77 and Herucová M., Novotná M.: Rodové portréty Csákyovcov z 19. storočia (A pokus o novú identifikáciu portrétu Grófky Marianny von Normann- Ehrenfels, rod. rová17 and also by Herucová.18 On the back side of the canvas there is a secondary authorization - signature Amerling pinx was added probably at the time of its later registration. From the description of the portrait of Marianne in the book by G. Probszt19 we conclude that the mentioned list of works ascribed to Amerling from 1851 refers to the painting of Marianne from Osijek and not the one from Levoča – the details and dimensions of the painting do not fit the description. The portrait from Levoča is a three-quarter profile of a woman with dark hair and a rose in the hair above her ear20, red cheeks, black fine laced veil, wine-colored satin dress, with a white “neckband”, and a dark coat around her body with a green underside. It is impossible to date the portrait only based on her clothes and hairstyle.21 The background is an “outlined sky”, grey-white with a blue part on the right side at the same height as the face. This type of a background can be found also on other Amerling´s paintings: Marie baroness Vasque von Püttlingen (1832), Archduke 17 Grabner S.: Friedrich von Amerling 1803-1887, Eine Ausstellung der Österreichischen Galerie Belvedere Wien (26.3.-22. 7. 2003) Vienna 2003, page 193 18 Herucová M., Novotná M.: Rodové portréty Csákyovcov z 19. storočia (A pokus o novú identifikáciu portrétu Gróf ky Marianny von Norman- Ehrenfels, rod. Franz Joseph with a flag (1838) and Field marshal Alfred prince Windischgrätz (1856).22 The Portrait of Marianne from the collections of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek (Fig. 6), Croatia, Inventory No.: S – 736 is oil on canvas, sized 63 x 51cm, not signed, but registered with Probszt.23 It comes from a portrait gallery at the castle in Valpovo, where the Hilleprand von Prandau family used to live. The portrait was painted at the time when her first husband died and before she married her second husband, Heinrich Friedrich Constantin Normann Ehrenfels. It is a three-quarter profile, Marianne is wearing a dreamy expression – she looks more like a young girl than a woman. She is wearing a narrow black glossy dress, decorated only with a white laced collar, she has a dark greenish drapery over her left shoulder, and her hair is parted and combed backwards. Above her ear the hair is decorated with a white rose. On her head she is wearing a fine black laced veil. Similarly as in the painting from Levoča, she also has a discreet golden earring in her ear. The background is brown-grey, on the right side next to her face it is lighter – a blue sky is shining through; in the right corner there is a coat of arms of the Hilleprand von Prandau family, which was added only later. The painting is in a good condition, set in the original decorative frame; it was not relined, the canvas is stretched on the original bottom frame. The painting is covered with a fine network of crackles. The portrait of Marianne´s sister, countess Alvine (Fig. 8) née baroness Hilleprand von Prandau (18301882), is also in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, Croatia, S-73724 and is considered one of the most valuable portrait paintings from Slavonia made in the 19th century. It is worth noting that the gallery also owns a portrait of Alvine by the Viennese painter Karl Rahl25 (1812-1865). Marianne´s sister Alvine married Pálo Pejačević (1813–1907) in 1850. The picture was painted when Alvine was twenty, immediately after she married
count Pálo Pejačević.26 The portrait of Alvine by Amerling is oil on canvas, 63x54 cm, not signed and dated in 1852.27 The painting of the countess is en face, with a dreamy expression in her eyes. Her brown hair is combed back and she is wearing earrings. The countess is wearing a dark dress with a low neckline, trimmed with a white laced collar; she is wearing a velvet coat, deep purple on the top and soft greenish on the backside. She is wearing a black velvet band around her neck with a big green stone in the center (Fig. 4). The background is in warm ochre–brown to black tones. The painting is stretched on the original bottom frame and set in the original decorative frame. The painting surface is slightly undulated, with a fine network of crackles. Very subtle is the painting of eyes and shadows in the face. The painting suggests that glazing paint around the eyes, shadows, jewelry and on the neck may have been removed during cleaning. Both the portraits of Marianne, from Osijek and Levoča, depict a young woman, looking towards the left side of the picture, her face shown in a threequarter profile. Both the women have similar features – shapes of the heads, eyes, noses and mouths, the only differences are the clothes and painted background (Figs. 9A, B; 10A, B). The two paintings are mentioned by Branka Balen:28 “An identical painting can be found in the Spišské museum in Levoča. There is a difference in the clothing. Most importantly, Marianne is wearing dark red dress with a double pleated collar and she is wearing a dark olive velvet cloak. The head is identical, with the same hairstyle and accessories, but her face gives an impression of an older age. Based on the above mentioned I think that this portrait was painted as a copy of our painting, but later and not in 1851 – as reported by Sabina Grabner in her book Friedrich von Amerling 1803–1887“. Although it was impossible to perform an anthropological analysis, the similarity is obvious. However, it is impossible to base a person´s identity on simi-

larity of details on decorations of the dress and hair. When following the works of art by Amerling, his female models (1832, several times in 1838, 1865, 1870, 1872)29 often wear a rose in the hair – a flower was a common hairstyle decoration at that time. It is known that F. Amerling kept a diary which indicates that he painted portraits of all three sisters Hilleprand von Prandau. In 1851 he painted a portrait of Stephanie, already as baroness Majlath30, and Marianne, and in 1852 he painted her younger sister Alvine.31 However, if the portrait of Marianne from Levoča was made as a copy of the portrait of Marianne from Osijek, as suggested by Branka Balen32, it is interesting to note that artistically it is superior to the original. Marianne from Levoča demonstrates a far more relaxed and self-confident painter´s hand. Also the details are far more elaborate. Marianne from Osijek is much sleeker and the details are not so carefully elaborated - e.g. the collar or the rose in the hair seem to be only outlined by the painter (Figs 9A,B and 10A, B). The portrait of Marianne Normann from Levoča demonstrates an excellent technique, with relaxed brush strokes, while the main stress is on the face – it is the typical painting style of F. Amerling. The work is a better job artistically (Fig. 11). On the other hand, the portraits of Marianne and Alvine Hilleprand von Prandau from Osijek are sleeker (Fig. 12, Fig. 13). This style of sleek paint29 Grabner S.: Friedrich von Amerling 1803-1887, Eine Ausstellung der Österreichischen Galerie Belvedere Wien (26.3.-22.7. 2003) Vienna 2003, page 296, Kräftner, Gabriel T.: Liechtenstein Museum Wien. ing can be found in artworks by Franz Schrotzberg (1811-1889)33 or Anton Einsle (1801-1871), approximately from the early 1850s. Both the portraits from Osijek give a generally darker impression, due to the background (the dark color is achieved by an admixture of ivory black), which permits the painted person to come forward. The portrait of Marianne from Levoča has a far brighter background in form of grey clouds, with a piece of blue sky shining through. Colors of the incarnate and the dress are fresher than on the painting from Osijek, where Marianne additionally wears a black widow dress, further intensifying the dark character of the painting. Particularly for the mentioned reasons we believe that the portrait of Marianne from Levoča was painted earlier and the chronology of origination of the paintings was opposite to that reported by Branka Balen. Nevertheless it is also certain that both the paintings were made within only a short period of time as they depict the same young woman at the approximately same age. We do not find the difference in ages of the two painted faces significant. The portrait of Marianne from Osijek is very probably a replica of the first portrait from Levoča. The reason of its painting may have been e.g. her “new“ widow status – she is shown after the death of her first husband in 1850 and the recently completed portrait in the red dress may not have been appropriate. And why is the portrait of Marianne in Levoča in Slovakia? The formerly Hungarian, now Slovak territory, was in the 19th century a home of the prominent aristocratic Csáky family and the daughter of Marianne Normann – Ehrenfels, Anna (1854 Valpovo - 1927 Spišský Hrhov), married count Vidor Csáky (1850 Bystrany – 1932 Levoča). It is very probable that the portrait was a part of the inheritance after countess Anna Csáky, the daughter of Marianne34 (Fig. 14). Materials analysis
The materials analysis unfortunately does not permit to definitely decide the chronology of the origination

of the above-mentioned portraits. For the portrait from Osijek the datation is known historically. In terms of materials it is supported by the documented beginning of application of zinc white, as mentioned above. The portrait of Marianne (1851) contains no Zn while the portrait of Alvine (1852) already does. The portrait of Marianne from Levoča does not contain zinc white, so it is impossible to date it. It cannot be significantly older – this is excluded by the approximate age of the depicted girl. The other material differences are summarized in tables 2 and 3. The non-invasive material analysis also clearly discerned later interventions. When measuring individual letters of the inscription on the back side of the canvas with the portrait of Marianne from Levoča, Fe, Mn and Zn were identified, i.e. earths with an increased content of Mn and zinc white. Meanwhile, zinc white is not present elsewhere on painting. As indicated by the analysis and based on a comparison of author´s signatures on other paintings by F. Amerling, we can confirm that in this case the authorship was really ascribed later. Also the quality and the style of the signature on the painting correspond to it. Both the paintings from Osijek have the coat of arms of the Hilleprand von Prandau in the right upper corner while no coat of arms is present in the painting of Marianne from Levoča. Based on the elemental composition (Pb, Sb, Co, Zn) the coats of arms (Fig. 15) contain white lead, Naples yellow, cobalt blue and also zinc white. Cobalt blue (Co) is not present in either of the portraits. Zinc white was found only in the painting of Alvine from Osijek. It is obvious that the coats of arms were most probably painted later, e.g. in the portrait gallery at the castle Valpovo.
is surprisingly high – e.g. in details such as the veil, hairstyle and rose with the same number of green leaves. The portrait of Marianne from the Spišské museum in Levoča, which has not been specifically dated, was probably painted earlier than the portrait of Marianne from the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek and it definitely was not created as a copy of the latter. Conclusions
Friedrich von Amerling painted over 1100 paintings; by studying of 32 portraits we attempted to describe his painting technique at least partly. Two thirds of the investigated paintings fall into the top period of Amerling´s artistic production, i.e. before 1830s and 1840s. Amerling used primarily two types of grounds, both bonded with oil (light ground and double-layer ground with a yellow bottom layer and a white top layer). The pallet of his favorite pigments is colorful and it does not change throughout the period of his artistic life. His conservative concept also includes the fact that he started using zinc white only in the early 1850s, i.e. approximately 20 years after had spread on the market, and only in a limited scope. The similarity in the compositions of two portraits of countess Marianne Normann-Ehrenfels, née baroness Hilleprand von Prandau (1828-1891)

Dále jsme porovnaly tři šlechtické portréty rodiny Hilleprand von Prandau malované Amerlingem, a to dva portréty hraběnky Marianny Normanové - Ehrenfels (ze Spišského muzea v Levoči, Slovensko a z Galerie výtvarných umění v Osijeku, Chorvatsko), a portrét sestry Marianny hraběnky Alvine rozené baronesy Hilleprand von Prandau (rovněž z Galerie výtvarných umění v Osijeku, Chorvatsko).
Oblíbený portrétista vysoké šlechty Friedrich von Amerling (*14.4.1803 Vídeň - †14.1.1887 Vídeň) studoval vídeňskou Akademii výtvarných umění v letech 1816-1824 u H. Maurera a K. Gsellhofera. Později působil i v Mnichově, navštívil i Záhřeb.
Vynalezli Francouzi: Revillon a Domer, tajemství výroby koupila americká společnost (Anaplas) Z jednoho osvětlování možno získat jen jeden barevný obraz.“ Anaplast: http://www.mariepospisilova. com/Slabiny.html, v literatuře často pod názvem „The painted photograph“, „Photograhs on Canvas“

1, tab. 2). Příprava mikorvzorků Fragmenty odebrané z obrazů byly zality do polyeste Probszt G.: Friedrich von Amerling, Der Altmeister der Wiener Porträtmalerei, Amalthea Verlag, Zürich, Leipzig, Wien, 1927, ve svém seznamu děl F. rové pryskyřice Neukadur.

3, obr. 2 A, B, C). Typ 2: dvojvrstvý olejem pojený podklad, ve spodní vrstvě s převahou žlutých železitých hlinek a s příměsí dolomitické křídy, olovnaté a barytové běloby (v různém poměru), ve svrchní vrstvě pak s olovnatou a barytovou bělobou, dolomitem a křemenem (v různém poměru); v pozdějším období někdy přimíchána i zinková běloba.

3) a v jednom případně s kadmiovou žlutí. Dalšími modrými pigmenty byly kobaltová modř a ultramarin.
u uhlíkaté a kostní černě, křídy a dolomitické křídy.

9 Porovnání detailů očí - Marianna Normann-Ehrenfels ze Spišského muzea v Levoči, Slovensko (A) a z Galerie výtvarných umění, Osijek, Chorvatsko (B) (foto J. Hradilová)
Rocha ve Valpovu.16 16 Balen B.: Dva portreta Friedricha Amerlinga iz fundusa Galerije likovnih umjetnosti u Osijeku., Zwei Bildnisse der Friedrich Amerling aus dem Bestand der Galerie der bildenden Künste in Osijek VDG JAHRBUCH 2005, 75,77 a Herucová M., Novotná M.: Rodové portréty Csákyovcov z 19. storočia (A pokus o novú identifikáciu portrétu Grófky Marianny von Norman- Ehrenfels, rod. Stylová a historická analýza Portrét Marianne (obr. Paní Eva Uchalová (Uměleckoprůmyslové museum v Praze) by šaty datovala do období let 1839-1850. 22 Grabner S.: Friedrich von Amerling 1803-1887, Eine Ausstellung der Österreichischen Galerie Belvedere Wien (26. 3.-22. 7. 2003) Vídeň 2003, s.118, 170 a 26.
Obraz je v dobrém stavu, zasazen do 23 Probszt G.: Friedrich von Amerling, Der Altmeister der Wiener Porträtmalerei, Amalthea Verlag, Zürich, Leipzig, Wien, 1927, 179 stran + 91 obrazových příloh, viz. poznámku 19.

Hraběnka je oblečena do tmavých šatů s velkým výstřihem lemovaným bílým krajkovým límcem, kolem sebe má sametový plášť z vrchní strany temně fialové barvy, z rubové strany přechází do tlumeného zelenkavého odstínu. Kolem krku má černou sametovou stuhu uprostřed s velkým zeleným kamenem (obr. 4).
