Welcome to the first issue of HungarianAmerica News, the official publication of the HungarianAmerica Foundation, Inc. (HAF). This bilingual newsletter will inform you about organizational changes and event updates. We also include some items in retrospect that illustrate our mission, operations, and projects. The first change you might notice is the title of the newsletter. HAF assumed responsibility for the operation and management of the projects of the Kossuth House Social Club (KHSC) in May 2003. Our newsletter – formerly the KHSC News – was renamed HungarianAmerica News to reflect this reorganization.

We would like to assure you that this change is a positive one in regards to our operations. We believe that it represents a solidified vision, a sharpened focus, and an increased resolve to realize a number of concrete projects which we have been pursuing since 1998. And just as in the past, we realize your importance in the achievement of HungarianAmerica’s ambitious goals: we work for you, but we also rely on you for support. This new organization was built on the results, benefits, and experience of the KHSC. We believe that HungarianAmerica’s strengthened management – along with an efficient check-and-balance mechanism among the

Board of Directors, Advisors, elected Officers and membership – best guarantee our further success. Simply put, these changes represent a renovation, while the core mission and objectives remain the same. This newsletter, which details a full year of our operations, including the transition to HAF, will provide you with interesting information on internal and external affairs. Hungarian Language and Culture in the Heart of Washington Introducing the HungarianAmerica Foundation, operator of the Kossuth House Social Club and the Hungarian Language Program It is our pleasure to announce the establishment of the HungarianAmerica Foundation (HAF), a notfor-profit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia in May 2003 for charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes. HAF’s goals are to promote Hungarian culture and traditions, foster HungarianAmerican relations, and contribute to the mutual understanding of our two countries and peoples. We strive to achieve these goals through cultural, educational, and social projects. HAF, now with an improved management structure – headed by a Board of Directors, managed by elected officers, and with valuable input from its Board of Advisors – was established to better serve members of the Hungarian-American community and those interested in fostering and deepening Hungarian-American relations. The flagship projects of the Foundation include the cultural, social, and educational events of the Kossuth House Social Club (KHSC): the Kossuth House Film Club, which kicked off our

social-cultural activities in 1998; the Kossuth House Language Program, launched in 2001; and the Hungarian American Studies Resource Center, an online community for the study of Hungarian immigration to the U.S. and Hungarian-American relations. Thanks to the central location of the Kossuth House in Washington, D.C., the very popular Hungarian Language Program has attracted a wide audience. Students come from various U.S. agencies, NGOs, international organizations, journalism, the diplomatic community, universities, and exchange programs. We are proud that our program represents a truly colorful blend: Americans, international visitors, and the descendents and spouses of Hungarian-Americans. To improve our language teaching resources, we have launched the Kossuth House Hungarian Library project, to be opened in 2004. We would like to express our gratitude to the Kossuth House management for granting us space for the library. This project would not have been possible without them and the donors. We welcome your book donations or support to build a library that will help our students and members access texts in Hungarian so that they may immerse themselves in Hungarian language and culture. Our new projects also in-

clude the development of a database for online exchanges and collaboration in research and development, and the establishment of professional networks. The Homecoming Forum™, a joint initiative with the Embassy of Hungary, was a milestone in our operations. The Forum strives to produce projects and outcomes that are of mutual benefit to both countries and that draw on private-public cooperation. Partly resulting from six years of operational experience and partly due to our improved organization and management structure, we can guarantee the same quality of service to our community. We are dedicated to the HAF’s mission and believe that every event we hold and project we carry out connects members of the Hungarian-American diaspora back to their roots and brings Hungary closer to Americans. As community interest in Hungarian-American events has continuously grown over

the past six years, the state of our organization remains strong. Thanks to your interest, support, and vote of confidence, our membership and listserv subscribers have multiplied. We significantly expanded our web site, improved its design, and enhanced its functionality. The results of our efforts are also demonstrated by increasing numbers of strategic partners, our network of cooperating organizations, and our publication and media coverage rates. A growing organization needs solid support from the grassroots, its constituency. We welcome volunteer time and in-kind or tax-deductible financial support to advance our projects and to take our operations to the next level. Once there, the Foundation can more generously not only inject its goodwill but also invest its capital into Hungarian-American projects, scholarships, and events that bring results and spread knowledge about and the reputation of HungarianAmericans.

Mesterségünk Címere: MagyarAmerika Mit jelent az hogy “MagyarAmerika”? “Magyar Amerika feladata, hogy összekösse az amerikai magyarokat, szervezeteiket, valamint a Magyarország iránt érdeklõdõ, hazánkkal kapcsolatot teremteni kívánó amerikai közönséget. “MagyarAmerika elõsegíti a kétirányú kulturális, szellemi, szakmai, anyagi, és kapcsolati tõkeáramlás. Hangsúlyt kap a kétirányúság, mivel fontosnak tartjuk azt, hogy Magyarország profitáljon az Amerikában élõ és dolgozó szürkeállományából. Milyen út vezet MagyarAmerikához? Kinek milyen. Éppen erre a változatosságra szeretnénk építeni. MagyarAmerika a professzionális magyarokat kívánja összefogni egy elektronikus és fizikai hálózaton keresztül, ötlet, állás, információ börze, kapcsolati központ funkciókat betöltve, melyek természetesen nem pusztán ember-ember, de cég-ember szinten is mûködnek. Éppen ebben rejlik az erõnk, hiszen egy olyan keresztezõdést képviselünk, ahol az egyén találkozhat másokkal, valamint szervezetekkel és cégekkel is. S konkrétan milyen út vezetett az alapítványhoz? Konkrétan, az alapítvány megalapításához hat éves út vezetett, rengeteg önkéntes munkával, kapcsolat építéssel, PR-rel, ‘branding’-gel, vagyis nevünk és szolgáltatásaink megismertetésé-

vel. Az út nem volt bukkanómentes. Támogatásra, leleményességre, kitartásra volt szükség bázisunk kiépítéséhez, stabilizálásához. Hivatalos nevén a HungarianAmerica Foundation, Inc.” (HAF) Washington DCben bejegyzett közhasznú alapítvány, mely az amerikai magyar kapcsolatok ápolását tûzte ki céljául. Fontos megemlíteni, hogy az alapítvány a Washingtonban kultúr ikonként és központként megismert Kossuth House Social Club (KHSC) programjainak mûködtetõje. Bizonyos értelemben jogutódja, hiszen menedzsmentje – Dr. Végh Sándor elnök és V. Velényi Edit alelnök – épít az ott szerzett hat éves mûködési tapasztalatra, tagsági bázisra, kommunikációs infrastruktúrára, és kapcsolati tõkére. Mennyiben jelent változást a tagság, közönség, és a támogatók számára a Kossuth Házból a MagyarAmerikába való átmenet? A változás közönségünk szempontjából minimális. Úgy is felfogható, hogy egy fejlettebb és komplexebb szolgáltatás együttest adunk, egy annak megfelelõ, kifinomultabb szervezeti formába csomagolva. Az elmúlt két év rendkívüli bõvülése missziónkat, hatáskörünket, projektjeink számát és komplexitását illetõen elengedhetetlenné tette a szervezeti váltást, a MagyarAmerika Alapítvány létrehozását. Struktúráltabb szervezeti és vezetési felépítés biztosítják az

immár kibõvült szervezet és projektjeinek professzionális menedzselését, nívós mûködését, s növelik a tagsággal járó elõnyöket. Stratégiai kapcsolatunk a Kossuth Ház tulajdonosával, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesülettel (Hungarian Reformed Federation of America) töretlenül folytatódik. Hogyan segíti elõ szervezetük az amerikai magyar kapcsolatok épülését, mélyülését? Mint közhasznú társaság mi a „puha” utat választottuk, vagyis, a kultúr diplomáciát, az oktatást, és a nemzet PR-t. Tudatosan használom a nemzet és nem az ország szót, hiszen az alapítvány jelzõ nélküli’ magyar érdekeket képvisel. Az alapítvány munkájában és eseményei során pártsemlegességre és politikai objektivitásra törekszik. Továbbá igyekszik a privát és állami szférák befolyásának optimális egyensúlyában mûködni. Ezen belül számos mód és út áll rendelkezésünkre az alapítvány missziójának kivitelezésére, amit tükröznek projektjeink. Milyen projekteket emelne ki? A Kossuth House Social Club mûködtetésén túl a legsikeresebb a magyar nyelvi program (Kossuth House Language Program), amely jelenleg az alapítvány fõ anyagi bázisát képzi. Harmadik éve folyik magyar nyelvoktatás. Programunk több mint száz jelentkezést fogadott hét

kurzuson keresztül, négy szinten. Hallgatóink között voltak diplomaták, sajtósok, üzletemberek, kormány és törvényhozásbeli, és nemzetközi szervezetek alkalmazottai, kétoldalú diák és szakmai cserekapcsolatok résztvevõi, másod és harmad generációs amerikaimagyarok, Amerikából és más országokból. Kétségtelen elõnyt jelent Washingtonban mûködni, hiszen az amerikai fõváros állandó lehetõséget nyújt a jelen és leendõ döntéshozókkal, véleményvezérekkel való találkozásra, tapasztalat cserére, programjaink és céljaink megismertetésére, s nem utolsó sorban támogatásuk megszerzésére. Ez azért is fontos, mert ez a felület és környezet teszi lehetõvé azt, hogy már említett puha megközelítésnek kemény eredményei legyenek. Említésre méltó programjaink között a Homecoming Forum™ projekt, mely a HAF és a Washingtoni Magyar Nagykövetség égisze alatt látott napvilágot 2003. már-cius 3-án. A Homecoming Forum, ahogy arról az American Hungarian Pa-norama 2003. május-júniusi számában is tudósított, leegyszerûsítve a Magyar-országra történõ agyvissza-szívás, illetve kapcsolati és anyagi tõke visszaforgatás serkentésének körülményeit, feltételeit vizsgálta olyan szándékkal, hogy egy talkshow helyett konkrét célo-

kat fogalmazzon meg, és egy bázist építsen ki, mely e kezdeményezés folytatását, s bõvítését garantálja. Ezen túl, a teljesség igénye nélkül, hat éve mûködtetjük a Kortárs Magyar Film Klubot, mely sokat köszönhet a Magyar Filmúniónak. 2002. novemberében, a Washingtoni Nemzeti Galériával együttmûködve került megrendezésre a Hungarian New Wave. A nagysikerû filmszemle fiatal magyar rendezõk alkotásait mutatta be a washingtoni közönségnek. Szintén hatodik éve hozunk a közönség elé tudományos elõadásokat és kulturális programokat, hogy fórumot adjunk amerikai-magyar témáknak, elõadóknak a tengeren innen és túlról. A klub célja ezen túl, hogy programjaink által a tagjainkat és az érdeklõdõket benne tartsa magyar vérkeringésben – aktuálpolitikai, szociális, és kulturális téren. Legfrissebb projektünk egy magyar könyvtár és videó kollekció létrehozása a Kossuth Házban, melyhez támogatást kaptunk a HRFA-tól, a Budapesti Amerikai Nagykövetségtõl, s magán adományokból. A könyvtár bõvüléséhez szívesen fogadunk további könyv adományokat. Végül, a részletesség igénye nélkül, segítséget nyújt online fórumunk amerikai-magyarság kutatáshoz, s ezen túl foglalkozunk kutatási kapcsolatok elõsegítésével, s egy

mindezeket lehetõvé tevõ adatbázis kiépítésével. Milyen a kapcsolatuk más amerikai magyar szervezetekkel és magyarországi intézményekkel? Az amerikai magyar szórvány mind történelmileg, mind földrajzilag tagolt. Sokan felismerték, hogy a fragmentálódást és izolációt enyhíteni szükséges, hogy a különbözõ szervezetek mûködése összeadódjon. Két fontos jelenség járult ehhez a gondolatkörhöz markánsabban az 1990-es évektõl. Az egyik, a nemzedékváltás az amerikaimagyar diaszpórában, a másik az Internet egyre prominensebb jelenléte. Felismerve ezeket a demográfiai és technológiai trendeket és tényeket, világos, hogy az új generációs szervezeteknek, mint amilyen a HAF is, a történelmi emigrációs szervezetek tudására, tapasztalataira építve, s azt elismerve, ám a változásokhoz alkalmazkodva, a technológiai elõnyöket kiaknázva kell kapcsolatot építeni. Konkrétan kapcsolati stratégiánkat illetõen, igyekszünk partnert, komplementert, s nem riválist látni a másikban. Igyekszünk a felek számára kölcsönösen elõnyös kapcsolatot teremteni és fenntartani. Az Egyesült Államok meglehetõsen nagy. A célok, missziók eltérõek. Az esetek nagy részében van lehetõség együttmûködésre, vagy piac felosztásra. Partnereink között szerepel

például, a Debreceni Nyári Egyetem, a Balassi Intézet, az Apáczai Alapítvány, a Pécsi Egyetem, az Oktatási Minisztérium, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, a New Brunswicki Magyarnyelvi Központ, az Amerikai Magyar Tanárok Egyesülete, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület, a Manhattani Magyar Hálózat, a Buffalói Magyar Kör, mely szervezetekkel szakmai, tárgyalási, anyagi támogatási, vagy kereszt promóciós kapcsolatban állunk. Természetesen ezek a körök bõvülnek és mélyülnek. Mi jelenti a legnagyobb kihívást és milyenek a kilátások? Egy széles és mûködõképes hálózat kialakításához, fenntartásához és bõvítéséhez fontos a támogatói bázis növelése, kontinuitás biztosítása, valamint stratégiai partnereinkkel történõ folyamatos kooperáció. Az egyéni támogatók megnyerésén túl anyagi stabilitásunk érdekében el kell érnünk olyan szervezeteket, cégeket, melyek felismerik alapítványunk missziójának jelentõségét, s az úgynevezett szatellit hálózat erejét. A szatellit koncepció lényege, hogy összekötve az egyes szervezeteket, átláthatóbbá, koordináltabbá teszi a magyar-amerikai rendszert, elõsegíti az együttmûködéseket. Mindezt egy adatbázison keresztül, melybe mind egyének, mind

cégek saját érdekükbõl csatlakoznak. A harmadik forrás az állami támogatás, amely jelentõs lehet. Hátránya, hogy az átfutási idõ általában hosszabb, s készülni kell a támogatás esetleges megvonására kormányváltás, költségvetési megvonások, vagy irányelv váltások esetén. A kilátások pozitívak. Természetesen tudjuk, hogy a támogatások elnyeréséhez komoly elõmunkálatokkal – fundraising, PR, marketing kampányok kell készülnünk. Az alapítvány ezt professzionális alkalmazottakkal, stratégiai tervezéssel, és megfelelõ idõzítéssel kívánja elérni. Legyen az önkéntes munka, pro bono professzionális szolgáltatás, vagy anyagi támogatást, az Alapítvány egyaránt értékeli. Támogatási szándékról honlapunkon, levélben, telefonon, vagy eseményeinken kapunk ajánlatot, információt. Fontos megemlíteni, hogy az adományok adómentesek az IRS 501 (c)(3) törvény szerint. Hogyan kapcsolódhatnak az érdeklõdõk a HAF köreihez, munkájukhoz, támogató bázisához? Kultúr eseményeinken, valamint honlapunkon keresztül juthatnak számos hasznos információhoz – programok, munkalehetõségek, stb. az érdeklõdõk. Hiszünk e hálózat erejében, alapítványunk eredményeiben. Ezzel a gondolattal zárva, várunk minden jelentkezõt és támogatót.

HAF and Hungarian Embassy Launch Homecoming Forum

PRESS RELEASE March 8, 2003 The New Generation of Hungarian Professionals and Scholars in the United States – How to Utilize Their Expertise for Hungary’s Benefit The Homecoming Forum™ is a joint initiative of the HungarianAmerica Foundation, Inc., representing the “New Generation of Hungarian Professionals” of the Washington Metropolitan area, and the Embassy of Hungary, under the patronage of Ambassador András Simonyi. The establishment of this Forum exhibits the Hungarian

Government’s interest in including expatriate professionals in the intellectual, cultural, and financial discourse of their homeland.

is the first in a global campaign that will ultimately engage thousands of Hungarians around the world and reconnect them to their roots.

The Homecoming Forum is intended to be a launch pad for a continuous, systematic, and perhaps institutionalized exchange of information between Hungary’s public and private sectors and the new generation of Hungarian expatriates living in the United States.

Goals The Form aims: • To discuss and evaluate the experience of the new generation of Hungarian professionals and students in the United States; • To identify ways for Hungary to benefit from the expatriates’ expertise and to facilitate their return to Hungary; • To tap into the talents and resources of young Hungarian-Americans; and • To show the Hungarian Government’s support for returning Hungarian professionals and students.

The goal of this Forum is to capitalize on Hungarian and Hungarian-American intellectuals, scientists, business-persons, and celebrities living in the United States. The Forum focuses on promoting increased participation of the new generation of expatriates in Hungarian-American matters and thus contributing to Hungary's development. We believe that this Forum

Outcome This Forum produced concrete suggestions that can be implemented via governmental and private channels to boost the flow of intellec-

tual, network, and material capital from the United States to Hungary. A Final Report (http:// www.hungarianamerica.com/ haza/HomecomingForum Report.pdf) has been compiled on the results of the Forum and submitted to respective ministerial portfolios, their opposition counterparts, and relevant private organizations. Furthermore, an online resource center has been designed for Hungarians studying and working in the United States that aims to boost information exchange. As a result, we believe, Hungary will be better able to tap into these underutilized resources and may regain some of the loss generated by the massive braindrain of its human capital. In addition, expatriates will benefit from improved legal regulations and the creation of institutions, such as online resource centers and databases, that will facilitate their return to Hungary.

Megkezdõdhet az Agyvisszaszívás Washington, március 9. – Homecoming Forum™ névvel debütált Simonyi András nagykövet védnöksége alatt, s néhány fiatal szervezésében létrejött párbeszéd, melynek célja az amerikai magyar professzionális “új generáció” megtartása Magyarország szellemi, tudományos, és üzleti vérkeringésében. A Fórum sikere a nagykövet

szerint abban rejlett, hogy a résztvevõk elõre tekintve, egy irányba néztek. A megvalósítás kulcsa az volt, hogy ez a korábban fel-fel vetõdött ötlet nyitott kapura, s befogadókra találjon mind a védnökben, mind a résztvevõkben. A fiatal szakemberek ötletbörzéje aktuális problémák gyakorlati megoldására törekedett. Az

alapcél az volt, hogy Magyarország érdekét középpontba helyezve ösztönzõ erõt találjanak agyvisszaszívásra, s arra hogy a már Amerikában maradt magyarok hogyan áramoltathatják vissza szellemi, kapcsolati, vagy üzleti tõkéjüket az anyaországba. Az értéktranszferrõl szóló panel azt vetette fel, hogy melyek azok a kulturálisan

beilleszthetõ ‘amerikai’ értékek, amelyek átvétele fejlesztené Magyarország versenyhelyzetét a világpiacon. Az MIT egy fiatal fizikus kutatója felszólalásában elmondta, hogy úgy látja, Magyarország sok mindenben amerikaibb, mint nyugat-Európa. Simonyi András örömmel fogadta e

szekcióban azt a szellemiséget, ami a korábban jellemzõ kisebbrendûséggel szöges ellentétben egy olyan egzisztenciálisan sikeres, büszke professzionális réteg jelenlétét tükrözte, amely hisz a lóugrásszerû elõrehaladásban, abban, hogy lehetünk bizonyos területeken vezetõk Európában, s a világban. Ónody kapcsolódási lehetõséget látott a tárca kutatásfejlesztési államtitkársága leendõ információs adatbázisa és a fórumon felmerült amerikai-magyar adatbázis között. A gyakornoki cserekapcsolatok bõvítése – oktatási, tudományos, kutató, politikai intézmények, és üzletek között – szintén a gyakorlati napirendre kerültek. Dr. Forgach Péter, a Steven Gerencser Sch. P. Calasanctius Alapítvány elnöke javaslatot tett, többek között, az amerikai és magyar törvényhozó házak közötti gyakornoki kapcsolat kiépítésére; valamint beszámolt az általuk kezdeményezett, a szegedi középiskolások körében szigorú szelekcióval mûködtetett vállalati/ üzleti gondolkodásmód nagysikerû oktatásáról. Simonyi András aláhúzta a rendezvény politikamentességét, tudva azt, hogy a kontinuitáshoz fontos, hogy ez a gondolat pártpolitikától és generációk közötti nézetkülönbségektõl független maradjon. A Fórumon résztvevõ Dr. Horváth Gábor, Magyarország New Yorkban szolgáló fõkonzulja, beszédében elmondta, hogy a nem a generáció váltáson van a hangsúly, hanem azon, hogy az új és a történelmi

A megbeszélés résztvevõi összegzésül kifejezték, hogy a kezdeményezés folyamatosságát laza keretek között, a kormányzati, a magán, és a civil szféra kiegyensúlyozott együttmûködésével látják fenntarthatónak. A Washingtonban megjelent alapító mag az Internet segítségével, s idõszakos találkozókon készíti elõ a Hazatérés Fórum következõ, 2004. márciusi fordulóját. A Fórumra készített honlap ötletbörze része várja az olvasók további javaslatait. Ezek a keleti partról kiinduló koncentrikusan bõvülõ körök olyan amerikai – s talán globális – hálózat alapjai lehetnek, melyek valódi szellemi, kapcsolati, és üzleti erõforrások áramlatának infrastruktúráját képezhetik. gatótanácsának elnöke, Dózsa György elmondta: Abádi professzor látogatásának egyik célja a Debreceni Egyetem és magyar szempontból stratégiai fontosságú amerikai egyetemek kapcsolatának fejlesztése. Ebben az AMRE vezetõ szerepet kíván játszani. Washingtonba a HAF elnökének, Dr. Végh Sándornak a meghívására jött el Abádi professzor. Itt megbeszéléseket folytatott a University of Maryland (UMD) külügyi dékánjával, amelynek eredményeképpen a két egyetem hamarosan egy általános együttmûködési keretszerzõdést ír alá. A College Park-i tárgyalásaira elkísérte õt Végh Sándor, aki Fulbright ösztöndíjasként hat évet töltött a UMD-n.

The HungarianAmerica Foundation, Inc. hosted a discussion forum at the Kossuth House on September 10, 2003 on one of the most challenging social issues facing Central Europe: Roma poverty and their reintegration into the fabric of society in an expanding Europe. Dena Ringold, a Senior Economist at the World Bank and a specialist on the

European and Central Asian region, gave a summary of the two-day conference, “Roma in an Expanding Europe: Breaking the Poverty Cycle,” held in Budapest, Hungary, from June 30 to July 1, 2003. Ringold authored the Roma Report, a publication produced by the World Bank for this event. She also spearheaded the organizational effort for the conference. range of top government representatives, senior officials from international organizations, and leaders from the Roma community and civil society, the event was a ground-breaking success. The program at the Kossuth House included the presentation of “Roma Voices,” a seven-minute documentary shot in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria and specially prepared for the conference. The film gave the audience a snapshot of the many challenges that need to be addressed, including education, health care, housing, and unemployment. Short video clips also shared the reflections of James D. Wolfensohn, World Bank President, and George Soros, Chairman of the Open Society Institute. Ringold also talked about the objectives for and potential of two milestone initiatives that were agreed upon and launched at the confer-

ence: the Decade of Roma Inclusion, which spans from 2005 and 2015, and the Roma Education Fund. Julius Varallyay, also a Senior Economist at the World Bank, reflected on the status and advancement of Roma inclusion in Hungary. He specifically addressed how government policies, local governments, EU accession, the increasing importance of NGOs, an increasingly active civil society, and cooperation with international organizations have and will continue to affect the formation of policies while helping Roma integration in Hungary.

“There is not one single road forward, but several. What we need is a multilayered approach that involves cross-country partnerships among Roma and international organizations, national and local governments, NGOs, and communities.”

Retrospective: HAF Hosts Reception for Hungarian Members of Parliament July 2003, Washington, D.C. – Twenty-two members of the Hungarian Parliament completed a three-week program in U.S. politics, language, and culture, co-sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Hungarian-American Coalition (http://www.hacusa.org/). During the program, the legislators – many of whom have had little exposure to the United States – participated in briefings and exchanges with U.S. government institutions and nongovernmental organizations. Topics included EU-NATO relations, U.S. defense and security policy, international trade issues, and the role of civic groups and independent offices in providing feedback and auditing of government policy. As an additional component of the program, delegates participated in daily intensive English language classes focused on the specific political and economic vocabulary relevant to each day’s briefing.

At a modest reception organized by the Kossuth House Social Club, parliamentarians were introduced to a group of HungarianAmerican professionals of the Washington metropolitan area. The evening provided a unique opportunity for the attendees to exchange thoughts and share experiences on Hungarian domestic and foreign policies and politics, as well as Hungarian-American issues. Hungary joined NATO in 1997 and will join the European Union in 2004. The request for the program originated with parliamentarians of the FIDESZ Hungarian Civic Party desiring to improve their expertise on transatlantic issues as well as their English-language skills. The Hungarian American Coalition sought assistance from the U.S. Embassy in Budapest and the International Visitor Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which actively supported this innovative program as a way to foster U.S. government relations with FIDESZ, currently Hungary’s

Group of FIDESZ Members of Parliament at the Kossuth House Reception main opposition party. A unique aspect of the program was that participants were housed in the homes of American families in the Washington, D.C. area, giving them further opportunity to practice their English, receive help with English homework, and, in many cases, commute using public transportation. The program concluded with a weekend visit to New York City, facilitated by the Hungarian Human Rights Foundation, where the legislators toured sites and met

with local Hungarian-Americans in a relaxed setting. Founders of the Kossuth House Social Club hope that the members of the delegation not only became richer with an experience, but also benefited from their visit to the United States, and hereby wish them further fruitful and effective work.

az érdeklõdõt a diplomafilm megalkotásától a washingtoni közönséggel való találkozásáig. Ha azt mondom Elõre!jobbaknak te jutsz eszébe, másoknak a Mókus Örs. Mi áll a film mögött? A film mögött én állok, személyes történetem, és Magyarország elmúlt 30 évének a történelme. A forgatókönyv, amit én írtam, a jelenre is próbál reagálni. Miért ez az idõszak fogott meg? Elsõsorban azért, mert úgy érzem, hogy a 80-as évek közepe és vége kevésbé van feldolgozva a filmvilágban, és mivel személyesen akkor voltam ugyanannyi idõs, mint a film fõhõse. Tizenévesen sok olyan kalandom, érzésem, benyomásom volt, amit szerettem volna egy filmbe öntve elmesélni. Sokban hozzájárult a témaválasztáshoz, hogy fõiskolai mesterem Simó Sándor (1934-2001) a diplomafilm téma választá-

sánál erõsen kapacitált minket arra, hogy olyan személyes történetet mondjunk el, ami a késõbbi világlátásunkat is befolyásolta. Egyszemélyes történet, amit Simó így jöttem film-nek nevezett. Hallgattam rá, s így született ez a film, amit nem bántam meg.

Mit jelent számodra, hogy Amerikában vászonra került a filmed? Jelenthete ez kiugrási lehetõséget? Egyrészt nagyon nagy élmény számomra, hogy eljöhettem és bemutathatjuk ezt a filmet. Ez fantasztikusan jó dolog. Ugyanakkor, ez pillanatnyilag nem jelent kiugrási lehetõséget, mivel a vetítés fõleg a helyi magyaroknak, amerikaimagyaroknak szól. A jelenlévõ amerikaiak inkább a magyar kultúra iránti érdeklõdésbõl vannak itt, s nem azért, mert valakit fel akarnak fedezni a filmipar, vagy a filmmûvészet számára. Amik kiugrási lehetõséget jelentenek, azok inkább a szakmai fesztiválok. Igazából én úgy

Sok tehetséget vonz el Amerika. Benned nincs ilyen elvágyakozás? Van bennem elvágyakozás. Otthon rengeteg olyan dologba botlok, ami rossz, amit nem szeretek. Ugyanakkor nem hiszem, hogy az elvágyakozóknak, garantált a hollywoodi happy end. Akik eljönnek ide Amerikába, nagy álmokat dédelgetve - ami miatt elindulnak erre a hosszú útra - aztán ráébrednek, hogy itt egészen más várja õket, mint amire számítottak. Sokszor nagyon kiábrándultak lesznek, de mégis itt ragadnak, és gyakorlatilag egyik napról a másikra tengetik életüket. Sok olyat ismerek, akik a filmszakmából jöttek ki Amerikába. A vége az, hogy visszakeverednek Magyarországra, de már megtörten, elvesztve álmaikat. Én szeretném az álmokat megtartani, s nem pedig, beleugrani egy számomra ismeretlen fekete ûrbe.

Aki itt születik és a Sunset Boulevard-on nõ fel, ott jár óvodába, ott megy el film iskolába, és ott vannak a tanárai, akik a nagy filmstúdiókban ülnek, mint ahogy nekünk a Simó ült a Hunnia Filmstúdióban, a Róna utcai filmgyárban, azok itt fognak filmezni. Vannak persze olyanok, akik annyira jó filmeket készítenek, hogy kiemelik õket. Lenyúlnak értük és áthozzák õket. Mennyivel jobbak a finanszírozási lehetõségek az amerikai filmes Mekkában? Ha új irányzatok ritkán is indulnak el az U.S.-ból, Amerika valóban a filmezés Mekkája. Los Angeles és New York kétségtelenül a filmipar legnagyobb központjai. A finanszírozással kapcsolatosan, nem hiszem, hogy Magyarországon

sokkal nehezebb helyzetben lennének azok, akik komolyan akarnak filmezni, és jó forgatókönyveik vannak. Szerintem Magyar-országon - fõleg ahogy az EU felé közeledik az ország - egyre több pénz áll rendelkezésre, amit filmkészítésre lehet felhasználni, csak nagyon keményen kell próbálkozni.

kultúrpolitikai döntés kellene. Igazából a film – és egyáltalán a kultúra, a mûvészetek – mostohán vannak kezelve Magyarországon.

Hogyan lehetne rentábilisabbá tenni a filmezést, több tõkét vonzani Magyarországra? Van megfelelõ marketing a külföldi filmes stábok bevonzásához? Nagyon fontos az ország filmgyártásának a bérmunka. Amikor Budapesten forgatják, például Eddie Murphy I Spy címû filmjét, az nem pusztán azért fontos, mert Budapest bekerül egy nemzetközi mozihálózatba, fõvárosunk látképe a nemzetközi közönség elé kerül, hanem azért mert több száz ember a magyar filmes szakmában ebbõl a pénzbõl tud megélni egy fél évig. Nyilván, minél több ilyen vendégmunka érkezne, annál jobban fejlõdne a szakma, annál több olyan filmet lehetne készíteni Magyarországon, ami a közönséget bevonzza.

Mennyibe került az Elõre! forgatása és milyen források finanszírozták? Közepes költségvetésû magyar film volt. 70 millió Forint, vagyis körülbelül 300,000 USD. A nemzeti filmes közalapítványok jelentették a fõ forrást a Magyar Mozgókép Közalapítvány, a Magyar Történelmi Film Alapítvány, a Nemzeti Kulturális Alap, és az Országos Rádió és Televízió Testület. Média támogatói voltak az Index, az O-Zone, és a Mai Nap. Egyetlen magánszponzorunk volt összesen, az RTL Klub. A magyar filmeknek egyelõre nem kedvez, hogy a magán tõkét nagyon nehéz bevonni, ugyanis a megtérülésre nincs nagy esély. Rendkívül kevés film az, ami rentábilissá válik, vagy egyáltalán nem létezik ilyen. Sajnos nincsenek meg azok az ösztönzések, adókedvezmények, amik szükségesek lennének ahhoz, hogy befektetõknek, nagyvállalatoknak, bankoknak érdemes lenne akármilyen támogatást filmbe invesztálni.

Amit személyes marketingben meg tudok tenni, azt hozzá rakom, de nem hiszem, hogy ez a rendezõk feladata lenne. Ehhez egy

Ha sikerülne betörnöd a kinti piacra, támogatnád a hazai ipart tõke, tapasztalat, vagy kapcsolatok visszaforgatásával?

Hogyan lehet véleményed szerint megoldani, hogy a kiugrásokból a maximumot profitálja a magyar filmipar? Kevés olyan alkotó van, aki befolyásolni tudja a filmiparnak a tõkevándorlását. Az hogy felkérnek egy rendezõt, vagy egy operatõrt egy film megrendezésére, akkor az mondhatja, hogy hol szeretné forgatni a filmet, gyakorlatilag azt a producer fogja eldönteni. A producer elõtt meg számsorok vannak, és azokat összehasonlítva dönti el és válasz, hogy egy filmet Prágában forgassanak, vagy Bukarestben. Gyakorlatilag neki mindegy. Ahol olcsóbb ott fogják forgatni. Ahol könnyebb megegyezésre jutni, ahol kevesebb a hivatali bürokrácia, ahol jobb szakmai háttér van. Sajnos ebben Magyarország eléggé visszacsúszott a ranglistán a közép-európai országok között, de még ez aztán meg is változhat könnyedén. Ez megint kultúrpolitika, mondjuk úgy, hogy itt Amerikában milyen reklámot generálunk Magyarországnak. Nagyon jó, hogy ez a New Wave esemény sorozat a Washingtoni Nemzeti Galéria és a Kossuth Ház együttmûködésével eljuttatja a magyar filmeket az amerikai fõváros közönségéhez. Megmutatja az, hogy Magyarországon is készülnek filmek, fiatal filmek, és talán valami elindul, ami aztán – mint egy vízbe dobott kavics –

egyre nagyobb hullámokká dagad. Mikor lesz a folytatás? A következõ filmmel természetesen. Az eredeti ötlet az volt, amikor Zalán Magdával terveztük a programot, hogy mindannyian, akik az osztályba jártunk, és akiknek van diploma alkotása - elvisszük a filmeket a washingtoni szemlén túl New Yorkba, Los Angelesbe, San Francisco-ba. Learning Hungarian at the Kossuth House Cultural Value-Added and Social Rewards Outweigh Language Challenges

Looking Back on the Beginning… The idea to launch a Hungarian language program had been with us for a while, but in autumn 2001, everything suddenly seemed to fall into place. The elements that make a program successful came together – sustained interest and demand, dedicated professionals, authentic environment, value-added cultural activities, and, of course, in-kind and other support to turn all this into practice and reality. The Hungarian Language Program serves well the mission of the Kossuth House Social Club, operated by the HungarianAmerica Foundation. We find it a truly bonding experience to promote Hungarian culture and traditions, to foster Hungarian-American relations, and to contribute to the mutual understanding of our two countries and people. The rewards clearly outweigh the challenges that our students first encounter when the feeling of getting closer to the roots and soul of Hungary occurs by speaking its language. The Kossuth House's cultural programs make this study experience enjoyable and authentic.

The Kossuth House Language Program has been the most rewarding of our projects. Although it has also been a financial pillar of our organization, when I write “reward,” I think of the social bonds that we have built and the cultural capital that we have gained. Thanks to the central location of the Kossuth House in Washington, D.C., the courses have attracted young and young-in-spirit professionals and students from various U.S. agencies, NGOs, and international organizations; journalists; diplomats; and exchange program participants. We are proud that our program represents a colorful blend of Americans, international visitors, and descendents and spouses of HungarianAmericans. Coming of Age – Expansion and Transition… Managing the school has been a thrilling experience, and I am proud to write that the language program is solid and expanding. In the past two years, the language program held six sessions on fours levels with more than one hundred registrants. Students who have continued their studies since our launch in 2001 have attained intermediate and advanced levels. Growing interest, the increase in the number of classes, the high retention rate of students, and the

continued dedication of our instructors made the Kossuth House known as a Hungarian Language Center in the Washington Metropolitan area and in North America. Our strategic partnerships and increasing professional and social network have created an environment for upscale operations. We thought that, in order to expand Hungarian-American networks, a structural framework was necessary. In 1999 we designed a concept and coined the term “Hungarian cultural satellite system.” The Kossuth House strove to become a model organization for this system, demonstrating how the existing infrastructure of an organization could be used to host Hungarian cultural, social, and language activities. Since 1999, the satellite concept has been submitted to various ministries, agencies, and offices to enable the formation of Hungarian American Networks across the United States. In 2002, the Language Program Director presented a paper, “Satellite System: An Institutional Model for Preserving Hungarian Cultural Heritage and Language in the Diaspora,” at the Toronto Conference of the American Hungarian Educators’ Association, which applied the satellite concept to language teaching and centers. A meeting with leaders of various organizations – which are geographically scattered and some of which are quite isolated – reinforced the need

to build a satellite network through which students can benefit from interaction with a wider community. Institutions will also be able to exploit their synergies, increase information exchanges, and possibly engage in cooperation to share costs and benefits and jointly face the challenges of fostering Hungarian culture and teaching our language in North America. Our continued efforts and presence earned recognition in the United States and in Hungary alike. In addition to our contacts with the University of Pécs, the official ECL Exam Center in Europe, and the Debrecen Summer University, a strategic partner to our program and the source of the Hungarolingua series used for our courses, we have established new relations. Talks with the Ministry of Education, Balassi Institute, Apáczai Foundation, and Hungarian Academy of Sciences hold prospects for further expansion. The overhauled Language web site, developed by CoDirector Sándor Végh, reflects the improvement and expansion of our program and operations. The site includes class announcements, an online registration form, material postings, a list of study sources, and archives of material related to our previous courses. My Language School Experience The idea of establishing the Hungarian Language School in Washington, D.C. came to us one hot summer afternoon in 2001 sitting in Edit’s (Edit V. Velenyi, then KHSC Director) office. Not knowing what to expect, naturally I was a little skeptical about the idea, wondering how many people would be interested. Two days later, Edit telephoned to let me know that over 50 people had responded to her e-mail. The KHSC Hungarian Language School was launched in late September 2001, with two beginner and intermediate/advanced groups, each meeting twice a week for three hours. Christine Tennant, and later Bernadett Bortnyák, helped us tremendously in launching a second beginner group. The following year, Katalin Seres joined us. The beginner group contained members of Hungarian-American mixed marriages and second- or thirdgeneration Hungarians. Their objective was to get acquainted with language ba-

sics. After the first year, consisting of two semesters, many graduated to the intermediate group. For the advanced students, the situation was slightly different due to differences in their knowledge of Hungarian, needs, and interests. Some were fluent in Hungarian, a match for any native; the vocabulary of others did not reach that level. Hence, the biggest problem was finding the right balance in addressing everyone’s weaknesses and personal needs. Without a suitable book, this presented a considerable challenge: creating exercises and tests, improving vocabulary, writing texts and dialogues. By the end of the second semester of the first year, we had achieved a good balance among the different levels. From this point, we focused on spelling, listening and reading comprehension, and situational language. Besides the regular program, two intensive summer courses were offered combined with weekend activi-

Velényi ties – cooking, horseback riding, canoeing, etc. Both were very successful due to the variety and applicability of content, price, and dedication of the organizers, teachers, and participants. Looking back on the years I spent in Washington, D.C., I enjoyed teaching very much and met some wonderful people, many of whom I consider to be close friends. I believe that we established a professional and successful language program, and I think that the students came to class not only to learn Hungarian and to discover the Hungarian culture but

also to meet people and make new friends. I leave Washington, D.C. with lots of memories; I will never forget the “pizza breaks” between classes and those cinnamon sticks (!), Hungarian movies at the Kossuth House, language school parties and diplomas, KHSC happy hours, and most of all the people. Loci). Loci is an exchange student from the Pazmány Péter Catholic University majoring in Hungarian Literature and Communications who served his second summer as culture and language instructor at the Kossuth House. We were thrilled to

Becoming a Teacher Growing up, I toyed with the idea of being looked up to – to being a teacher. Last summer, when fate and Edit, KHSC Director, asked me to make some presentations on Hungarian culture for participants in the Summer Immersion Course offered by the KHSC, I felt my time had come. I also felt honored, and perhaps a bit overestimated in my capabilities. The situation became more serious when the head instructor, Éva Heffron, had to go on an unforeseen busi-

ness trip. There was no way to avoid being exposed to a group of students eager to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world – Hungarian. Whether I wanted to or not, I was about to substitute teach a few language classes. From one day to the next, I found myself teaching, which took so much more than relating the culture of my native country. After the first questions were posed, I wasn’t quite sure that I proficiently spoke my alleged first language, but with a little preparation be-

forehand, I stood firm. My students' curiosity and commitment somehow made me able to do the job and to enjoy it. I experienced a level of responsibility that I had never felt before. I woke up one night and realized that I had forgotten to correct homework. I don’t remember if I got out of bed and corrected it; I do remember, however, that my stamina and character were being tested like never before. In spring 2003, Edit hired me again to teach the summer language course. I didn’t have any difficulty getting through the visa process in Hungary, so fate seemed to be on my side. Soon, I was back in the United States teaching beginners. The fact that there were a few folks in my new class who already spoke some Hungarian posed a new challenge. According to their feedback, I must have handled it well enough. In

fact, it wasn’t that hard at all after discovering how much they could help their less advanced classmates. Soon everybody was teaching everybody: I, them; they, each other; and they, me. I learned a lot, both as teacher and occasionally as student to my students. Having studied languages, I know what they felt whenever they got a word or sentence right, or much more rarely, wrong. I also know that expressing ourselves in a language other than our native tongue is a way to open an eye on the world. The more eyes, the more sight. The more sight, the more colors come out. Good to know that there are some people for whom the world will never be gray. It was good to have these people in my class. I feel most fortunate, and honored, having met them. to welcome her aboard and wish her a successful and swell time in Washington and at the Kossuth House. The Road Ahead – Building Networks … To guarantee the program’s success and expansion, dialogues and negotiations continue with the Ministry of Education, Balassi Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Debrecen Summer

University, and Apaczai Foundation. We will seize every opportunity for further contacts with institutions in Hungary and the United States to turn this network into an operational reality. To improve the environment and our language teaching resources, in October we launched a library project at

Studying Hungarian at the Kossuth House: Reconnecting with My Roots In winter 2002, I resorted to the Internet with the hope of finding a Hungarian language class somewhere in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. I was trying to “reconnect” with my family’s roots. All of my grandparents emigrated from Hungarian areas of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and settled in the United States before World War I. As a young child I remember hearing Hungarian spoken frequently in the little Hungarian church to which my family belonged and in my mother’s family. I missed hearing the language with its many interesting and harmonious sounds. My search paid off. Thanks to the Kossuth House web site, I was able to find exactly what I needed – an evening class for beginners. I have taken two courses at the Kossuth House, one this past spring and one this

summer. I have enjoyed these classes immensely, learned a lot, and significantly improved my language skills. The teachers – professional, knowledgeable, and energetic young Hungarians – are passionate about teaching the language and incorporating Hungarian culture, history, and music into course work. Once we sang Hungarian folk tunes, which for me was an extremely interesting approach to learning a language and culture. The classes in which I have participated have been quite small, allowing the opportunity to receive individualized instruction. The teachers have been engaging and demanding and create productive learning environments. Because the classes have been offered in association with the Kossuth House Social Club, students can learn about other Hungarian cultural events – films, con-

vanced Beginners/Intermediate level that will better prepare me for traveling in Hungary and conversing in Hungarian. I hope that further study will provide me with the skills to translate Hungarian folk music, with which I am fascinated. Introducing the KHSC Language Programs Instructors We are pleased to introduce the instructors of the 2003 KHSC Language Program. Katalin Seres, instructor with KHSC since 2002, has extensive teaching experience. Her knowledge of and love for Hungarian culture has been a valuable asset to KHSC and its students. Kata has been successful in passing on our cultural heritage and widening the network of “Friends of Hungary.” We would like to say thank you for her contribution to KHSC’s work and mission. Kata graduated from the Kõrösi Csoma Sándor Teacher Training College, Békéscsaba, Hungary, in 1997. Following her studies and upon moving to Budapest, she was offered positions as an English teacher with the Australian Center for Education, Danubius Language School, and King Language Academy. Over the past two years, she has had the opportunity to teach stu-

dents at all levels in various classroom settings, ranging from one-on-one sessions to groups as large as sixteen. She moved to the United States in 1999. She has worked as a Hungarian instructor with Comprehensive Language Center, with InLingua, and with the Diplomatic Language Services, where she prepared diplomats and military personnel to be posted in Hungary. Her “ars poetica” on Hungarian teaching upon joining the KHSC Language Program: “I find teaching Hungarian more challenging and therefore more rewarding and enjoyable than teaching English. I’m also happy to be able to pass on the knowledge of my mother tongue and the love I have for Hungarian culture to my students. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to teach at the Kossuth House.” Ibolya Latrán received her degree in 1999 at Lajos

Kossuth University (now the University of Debrecen) in Hungarian Linguistics and Literature. Previously, as a university student, she helped produce language learning audiocassettes for the HungaroLingua textbook series of the Debrecen Summer University. Since her graduation, she has taught Hungarian every year at the Summer University. Ibolya also taught literature and grammar as a high school instructor, first in Tokaj and later in Budapest,

while simultaneously teaching Hungarian as a second language at the Interclub language school and at the Embassy of Croatia. She has lived in the United States for two years, and just moved to Washington from Boston, where she was employed as a Hungarian teacher at the Boston Language Institute. She has taught Hungarian at all levels, from absolute beginner to advanced. We are glad to have a committed professional join our team.

Kossuth House Hungarian Library We are proud to announce the establishment of a Hungarian Library at the Kossuth House. The idea has been floating around for years, but nobody seemed to have the time, energy, or will to put it together. One day in early summer, however, long-time Washington area resident and prominent Hungarian activist Prof. Ede Chaszar

and his wife Maja left a box of Hungarian books at the Kossuth House when they moved back to Brazil. It provided the impetus to launch this ambitious project: to find an available room, call for book donations, collect and organize the books, and open the library to the public. The management of the HRFA was very supportive and

granted space in the Kossuth House. Since then, we have received loads of Hungarian-language books, from the Pflum, the Basa, the Nadasi, and the Hogye families, as well as from the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, PA, and the American Embassy in Budapest, where diplomats Christine Elder and Louis Fintor have been instrumental in

securing and shipping over a dozen boxes of Hungarian books so far. We are grateful for their support. If you wish to donate Hungarian books (or music or movies on CD, VHS, or DVD) to the Library, please let us know. Thank you in advance.
