Reason From a number of offered projects, each with a very different historic background and scale, I chose the former Dutch Military Museum (Leger Museum) in Delft. This 17th century warehouse complex on the south side of the old city center consists of 11.000 m2 floor space in an open floor plan divided over several connecting buildings and different levels. The reason I chose this project is because of the apparent historical authenticity of the buildings, its large scale and its apparent isolated location within the historic city center. Title ‘… een pakhuis vol historie…’; het verleden verankeren in de toekomst
Product Problem Statement The Armamentarium is situated on a small peninsula in the old city center of Delft. Because of its location and its limited connection to the infrastructural network of the city the Armamentarium does
Located on a peninsula with limited infrastructural connection to the city Its former, private (military), function made the Armamentarium complex not contribute to the social structure of the city The size (volume) of the Armamentarium buildings differ greatly from the urban fabric in its direct surrounding The introvert character of the buildings Monumental construction principals and its appearance contribute greatly to the overall monumental value of the complex and the individual buildings in special
To investigate these aspects the following by researching the following questions: Embedding: ‘’How can the armamentarium complex become more embedded (Dutch; verankering) in the social structure of the city?’’ Connecting: ‘’How can the embedding of the armamentarium complex be realized without changing it the character of its historic isolated location?’’ Program: ‘’How can the new program for the armamentarium complex aid in embedding the complex more in the social structure of the city without losing its historic and monumental introvert character?’’ Monumental: ‘’How can the armamentarium complex be transformed and redesigned for the new program in such a way that not only the current monumental aspects of the buildings are respected but some qualities even emphasized ?’’ Goal The goal of my graduation project is to be able to fully understand the role of the Armamentarium complex in its urban setting and to value its important architectural and building technological aspects. This knowledge will result in a chosen new program (city archive and museum depot) with a durable spatial design for which the Armamentarium will be transformed in such a way that the (monumental) values of the complex will be preserved for future generations and the complex itself will (again) participate in the social consciousness.
Process Method description Literature To research the impact of big sized buildings in a historic urban context I chose the topic of the theory of Bigness by Rem Koolhaas in my position paper. As well I researched the impact of classicistic architecture on perception and understanding of buildings from texts by Demitri Porphyrios. From these texts I will try to find key focus points, interfacing approaches and above all inspiration to deal with the conditions in my design brief. Urban and Architectonic Analysis To investigate the urban conditions and architectonic composition and organization I will draw maps/plans of different relevant aspects. I will try to capture these aspects in a more and more schematic drawings to try to find again focus points on which I will design my own urban master plan and building transformation . In addition to (re)drawing maps I will use photographs and sketches to frame certain specific conditions that cannot be captured in abstract schematics. Building technology Using sketches of detailing plus construction principals and photographs of materials used I will map the building from a technical point of view. Here by I will research as well published literature on the Armamentarium complex and on historic building styles, material use and construction principals.
Reference projects Besides researching similar historic building typologies and construction principals I will also search for inspiration in other projects that bare similarities in dealing with (some of) the conditions mentioned in problem statement. Reflection Relevance With my graduation project I will research the possibilities to integrate a program that is both introvert (museum depot) and building physically demanding (paper archive) into a very historic and monumental building complex. It is my aim to that this project will create a greater social consciousness of the history of the Armamentarium complex and will play a bigger part in social urban life of the inner city of Delft.
