~ Studio Thema Docenten Argumentatie keuze
Interiors, cities and buildings MSC 3/4; The library as public retreat. Christoph Grafe, Mark Pimlott, Irene Cieraad. Public buildings are very necessary and need a lot of precision in formulation and expression, since they serve everybody. I see this public affair as a challenge for a Graduation Project to learn to deal with. To choose to graduate with a project that entitles the different aspects on social and architectonic level and with a project for the Netherlands, I resulted in deciding for this theme.

Boon, Floor & Straathof, Merel

1. Context Napoleon took great interest in the library and established a new administrative organization. The order that all books in provincial libraries not possessed by the Bibliothèque Nationale should be forwarded to it, subject to replacement by exchanges of equal value from the duplicate collections, makes it possible, as Napoleon said, to find a copy of any book in France in the National Library. Napoleon furthermore increased the collections by spoil from his conquests, a good share of which, however, was restored after his downfall. During the period from 1800 to 1836, the library was virtually under the control of Joseph Van Praet. At his death it contained more than 650,000 printed books and some 80,000 manuscripts. Following a series of regime changes in France, it became the Imperial National Library and in 1868 it was moved to newly constructed buildings on the Rue de Richelieu designed by Henri Labrouste. Upon Labrouste’s death in 1875 the library was further expanded, including the grand staircase and the Oval Room, by academic architect Jean-Louis Pascal. In 1896, the library was still the largest repository of books in the world, although it has been surpassed by other libraries for that title. By 1920 the library’s collection had grown to 4,050,000 volumes and 11,000 manuscripts.

If you continue the stairs will you end up in the 2nd floor. Here are the studyplaces with rooflight; there is also a connection to the Rotterdamsch leeskabinet with one or two doors. The interior of the café is one big corridor or gallery. Its height is ¨double¨, except for the part in the ¨back¨; downstairs is the kitchen, upstairs is for the service and equipment. There can alsbo be a connection made here between the Café and the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet. At this first floor you can have a look over the café from the ballustrade connected to the EUR studyplaces. The 3rd floor can be made with long tables, relaxcorners, sofas, stretches or caféchairs. There is one big window at the north side.

1. Context The volumes neglect the existing structures of the Binnengasthuisterrein and break it in two parts.

3. Spatial organisation Since the plot is very deep, the circulation core can be optimized in the middle.

Urban situation
1. Context The building connects al buildings of the Binnengasthuisterrein to create a central courtyard which dominates all other courtyards by it’s position and scale.
100m
2. Types The typology differs from the surroundings. The long volume shows resemblance with a market hall.
2. Types The court in this context has expanded itself to a super- court. This typology forms the inverse of the ‘Swimmingpool’ typology, since it creates a central empty space.
3. The inner street fulfils a central role in the interior.
3.The symmetrical plan forms a characature of its own type and tries to interfere with the existing context.
3. Spatial organisation The spatial organisation Is not defined by its form. The form gives the impression of a black box in which all types of organisation could take place.
3. Spatial organisation The building is formed by it’s spatial organisation. It connects all buildings forms the circulation between those different parts.
4. Appearance Each façade adapts reacts on different features of the site. The two front façades represent the university library to the city center, and the Binnengasthuisterrein. A longlitudal façade relates the building to a courtyard. The existing historic building forms the fourth façade.
4. Appearance The boldness of the hierarchical layout suggests an entrance in the courtyard or in the street.
4. Appearance The entrance is set back ans creates a welcoming front square to the Doelenstraat.
4. Appearance The appearance adapts the existing typologies of the Binnengasthuisterrein. The entrance placed at the street makes a visual connection to the inner court.
5. Role of interior The character of the interior is determined by the context.
5. Role of interior The exterior court forms the main interior of the building.
5. Role of interior The relation to the street and courts are of great importance for the interior. The courtyard, façade create different interiors.

Amsterdam’s new University Library ¨The new university library is a tribute to the humanities. Actually it’s a kind of extension of the living room or club where people come together to share their thoughts in an area where there is a higher purpose to enrich the mind.¨

Niemand ploft in groepsverband ergens neer.

Amsterdam The University library of Amsterdam at the Singel bulges. Students stand in line if they had a night out in the main club they do not want to miss. It can be noticed that in the center of Amsterdam it actually smacks of with students, but where do they study anyway? Is it perhaps in the new public library in Amsterdam, which has recently been completed? The ObA situated at the harbor, near the station is a multifunctional mix that starts with a café. Then the magazine lounge, the escalators to the rooftop and study areas varied from tables and chairs at the window to mini train compartment cushions, pub atmosphere or sky high circles curtains hanging in there seats to follow up. The collection begins on the first floor with music, film and media (computer stuff everywhere is white) followed by the racks of books on history, medicine, philosophy, and as the icing on the cake with a theater and restaurant with terrace on top. This whole matter of facilities and decor provides a lively atmosphere. If you sit down at the magazines you hear the arts of a visitor who practices the piano at the entrance. This stage of the bid is not necessarily associated with the traditional image of a university library. It is also not necessarily an example for an university library. The collection consists of books, but is not central, the creation of quiet study areas is not explicitly chosen: a lot more is about creating a large (several?) offer to the best potential. However, for the university library ObA is an example of a large public building (28.000 m2) with a primary impact on the location. The UvA The plans of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to ‘replace’ the university on the Singel have been around since 1997. The original plan is a new university library building on the Binnengasthuis. This is one of the four campuses in the possession of the UvA. This one refers to the downtown campus humanities; Binnengasthuis. The UvA is working with the housing strategy for the development of four open city campuses in Amsterdam. Besides the humanities at the Binnengasthuis Campus there are the campus for the sciences at Science Park, the social sciences on the Roeterseiland and medical sciences in and around the AMC. This development followed for each campus are planned to have its own library/ study center. In 1997, the decision of a new library for the humanities at the University of Amsterdam on the Binnengasthuis (BG) has anchored the argument that the image shall differ from that of many smaller libraries that are in Humanities possession (it has 17 small libraries). In addition, the University of Amsterdam has a very large collection with many rare and unique material. The at that time urge to the research function to enlarge its image and create a large new building now hangs on different threads. This plan has been divided into the housing of the special collections and creating study areas in the form of a study centre. The 2002 contest won by the Spanish office Cruz y Ortiz had no overall effect on the canal. The neighborhood protested and makes that the UvA on the downtown campus, has no new study places in the form of a study. It is now that the special collection got housed at the Oude Turfmarkt (Binnengasthuis). The question now arises: how do we strengthen the UvA that belongs to an area where the interests may be obvious, but where the functions are as yet, so that no plan succeeded in getting a place?
world there is a need to more places where the collection is physically present, says everything about technology. The argument that the extensive property of the humanities would provide the opportunity for the research function in humanities to strengthen its resonance, but not only about digitalizing processes should be strengthened. The new university is just a tribute to the humanities. Actually it’s a kind of extension of the living room or club where people come together to share their thoughts or to enter an area where there is a higher purpose to enrich the mind. Sea of 10,000 m2 In order to hold this image a suitable program is required. The new library will initially mainly hold a lot of student. What do these students need to study? The brief of the UvA wants a university library on the Binnengasthuis (UB-BG) in the Oudemanhuispoort Complex. The main functions are divided into Open up books; 1.400 m2, Study Desks; 2.500 m2, teaching rooms, 1.000 m2, library staff workstations; 1.800 m2, Air conditioned warehouse Special Collections; 1.000 m2. Furthermore, the UvA wants a partnership with the Academy; royal umbrella organization of research (KNAW). Prerequisite for this party is that the library / study center is to be at the BG site. The brief from 2002 is based on an open arrangement of the humanities collection of 14 km. The size of the collection is so far reduced to 12.4 km in open access arrangement. In comparison, the Humanities Utrecht University has 1.000 students less. The delivered during 2004 at the Utrecht University campus has 36.250 m2, 4.200.000 books, 1.000 seating areas, 560 study places and 160 staff spots. The size of the current collection humanities is 12.7 km across the aforementioned campus and already renovated downtown university library. Cultural Decor The configuration of the new university library on the Binnengasthuis is a huge stalemate. The student user is not consistent with the ¨owner of the canal¨. The demographics of the students are at the same time of economic importance to the town. The urban economy is dependent on the student, and (perhaps more) than on the tourists and residents. Emotional arguments for the preservation of properties are paramount. The social impact of a new library within the Binnengasthuis grounds a tussle between the parties. The question is who’s really the most to, since the future lies precisely in this study places for students. It is this rich cultural history that the Binnengasthuis provides as an excellent backdrop for the student to study.
1. Context The placement of this building block occupies the existing route of the Binnengasthuis and makes it part of it. The volume forms distinghuishes itself from its surroundings in several ways. By its shape, its direction, by the fact it touches the surrounding objects and by the fact it blocks the street. The building is its invert from a supercourt; it connects buildings of the Binnengasthuis but is let to create a central space which pushes all other courtyards by it’s position and scale.

Zen Garden What type of building can present a new university for the UvA on the Binnengasthuis (see studies Binnengasthuis typologies)? The public character of the area can grow stronger throughout cruel said; to replace the housing with the new university. The interior of the Binnengasthuis get a totally different character as the configuration of the new type of building strengthens the existing typologies of historical value for otherwise explain. The old courts can gain more public significance while an idyllic backdrop to form this, is a new library. For this study where students really prefer? If we look at the ObA there are so many different situations created that there is almost no refuge to be found. To stimulate the brain the living room or pub atmosphere is on the one hand desirable. At the same time, a serene view also work wonders for studying. The key to the success of the new university library located in the Binnengasthuis can be to work with the public area. The ambition to have is to manifest the university library as the accurate unifying factor as humanities can be.
Book or laptop According to the brief of 2011 of the UvA the new plan library on the Downtown Campus (the Binnengasthuis) offers ¨access to the open accessible collection of the humanities and has a large number of study and workplaces, classrooms and meeting places such as chatcafe¨. Ideally, according to this program compatible with those of the library, facilities function as the heart of the campus humanities. In other words, the UB-Binnengasthuis replaces the UB on the Singel and thanks to its central location its easily accessible to the user student, but also to a teacher, assistant and researcher. Now the theorem applies whether these users are all relevant to a new university library. Users of the new university library can be distinguished in types of borrowers, students and visitors; that would have long become obsolete. There is a short in study places. These are ‘nowadays’ often considered growing elements. Here I do not believe. The fact that as well in the digital
