EXCURSIE HAMBURG 2010
We wensen iedereen veel plezier in Hamburg!

HafenCity Public Space 03 Architect: tijdspad:

Marco Polo Residential tower 11 Architect: Competition: opgeleverd: oppervlak
Behnisch Architekten 2006, 1st Prize 2010 12,500 m2 bvo
Directly on the Elbe, commanding a prominent position in the HafenCity, stands the Marco Polo Tower. The 55 m high tower punctuates the end of the route from the inner city out to the new attractions, the Cruise Ship Terminal and the Promenade on Strandkai. Its 17 above ground levels, each turned a few degrees on their axis, allow all 58 apartments spectacular views over the harbour and the city. Apartments are between 60 and 340 square metres in area. Generous perimeter terraces and balconies extend the living areas out into a soft play of lines, and lend the tower its distinctive image. A high degree of flexibility is offered with the possibility of increasing areas by connecting neighbouring apartments. External variations in appearance are reflected in the interiors, in that no level, or apartment, is quite like any other. Choices can range from two room apartments to large penthouses with maisonette characteristics. Load-bearing structural elements and necessary fixed services have all been reduced as much as possible, so that the residents themselves can decide where they want to sleep, cook, eat, bathe or relax. On entering the apartment one has an uninterrupted view over an open plan living room landscape, through generously sized glass panels, to the outside world and Hamburg’s roofscape. The apartments are sold design-ready. Clients can design their new home, with the help of an interior architect, according to their own taste. The concept for residential spaces proposed by the Behnisch Architekten emphasizes natural light and views. The Marco Polo Tower brings together high-class living accommodation and a holistic ecological building concept. The recessed façades are protected from direct sun by the overhanging terraces above so that additional sunshades are not necessary. Vacuum collectors on the roof, using a heat exchanger, turn heat into a cooling system for the apartments. Innovative sound insulated air louvres in the sleeping areas make natural ventilation possible without increased noise pollution from outside

The new Unilever headquarter building for Germany, Austria and Switzerland is located right by the river Elbe in Hamburg’s HafenCity. It marks the end of the route out of the town centre to Hamburg’s new attractions: the cruise ship terminal and the promenade on Strandkai. Here Unilever’s new building opens itself up to the city and its inhabitants. The central element and heart of the design is the generous atrium, flooded by daylight, which, on the ground floor, gives passers-by the opportunity to get to know the company better while browsing in the shop stocked with Unilever products, sitting in the cafe or relaxing in the spa. The atrium is also the central location for people to meet and communicate. As in a city, bridges, ramps and steps connect central spaces with each other. Here people can meet, talk and enjoy the inspiring ambiance. Vibrant and communicative interaction evolves, thereby fostering a feeling of togetherness among the employees. The workplace is no longer a separate department. The building itself reinforces the identity of the company. The building follows the principles of holistic, sustainable architecture. While implementing technologies that help save resources, the energy concept adheres to the principle of avoiding technical solutions
wherever possible. The office area is cooled by means of thermally activated reinforced concrete ceilings. A single-layer film facade placed in front of the building’s insulation glazing protects the daylight-optimized blinds from strong wind and other weather influences. The building’s primary energy consumption during operation will be under 100 Kwh/a m². A newly developed SMD-LED system has been deployed both for the building’s general lighting and for workplace lighting. This system is up to 70% more efficient than conventional halogen or metal halide lighting. The Unilever building received the newly established HafenCity EcoLabel in gold.

[www.architekturarchiv-web.de/gerson.htm]

The extension building, designed by Cologne architect O. M. Ungers, forms part of the Hamburg Kunsthalle, which was built in 1869 and first extended in 1919. It houses international contemporary art from Pop Art to the present day, adding 5.600 m² of the exhibition space to the approx. 6.000 m² currently provided by the first two buildings. For O. M. Ungers the square is the perfect form, and in this he refers back to the Renaissance period and the work of Palladio and Ledoux. His concept for the museum acknowledges a debt above all to Karl Friedrich Schinkel. With the great respect Ungers has for the existing facade of the Kunsthalle, he designed the new building in two sections: a four-storey cube with a pale limestone facade and a large underground section linking the new and old buildings. The base section has a red granite exterior. Taking the square as his basic shape, Ungers has created a clearly-defined architecture with an interior designed both to serve the purposes of presenting art and to meet the needs of museum visitors. The architect and the head of the museum agreed on certain basic principles: the new building was not to be an ostentatious demonstration of architecture, but rather the aim was to create optimal surroundings for the presentation of artworks, to devise rhythmical progressions of rooms which can be varied in size, and to use simple materials.

Open space concept ‘Jungfernstieg’ competition 2002, 1st prize, completion 2006 with André Poitiers
The DOC Italian restaurant is located in a glass cube pavilion, next to the Binnenalster with magnificent lake views. Downstairs a bar, upstairs the restaurant. The architecture of this glass gastronomic goodie is a bit controversial. From the outside the glass pavilion looks like an ice cube, from the inside all prejudices melt, since the interior is anything but cool. Great food. On the ground floor lies a Hapag Lloyd travel agency. [bron: mimoa]
In 2002, an international competition was held to attain proposals for reactivating the Jungfernstieg. The goal was to create an urban space that would invite people to promenade, take in the sights, and experience this exciting urban center. This strategy was implemented in order to draw as many visitors as possible back to the Jungfernstieg so that it could once again fulfill its earlier function. The concept developed in cooperation with Poitiers Architects and the landscape architects WES & Partner foresees a new character for the ensemble around the Binnenalster, Kleine Alster and Rathausmarkt. The new design features define three areas: The street space is held free and narrowed to allow widening the pedestrian zone fronting the facades. A boulevard is foreseen on the waterfront with three rows of trimmed lime trees. A generous, tribune-like stair in the entire width of the Jungfernstieg leads to the water. The existing 1970’s dock pavilions will be razed to make way for a new pavilion-cube that nestles into the grand urban stair. [bron: www.wesup.de/hamb02040_geo.html]

The Kempertrautmannhaus is located in the heart of Hamburg, close to the prestigious Jungfernstieg quarter and the Inner Alster Lake. The ninestorey building accommodates offices and shops on a prime site that had stood vacant for years. It thus fills a gap in the inner city’s business and shopping heartland. The developers have created a transparent building that affords fine views of the Alster Lake from its upper floors. The offices are open-plan, allowing the flexible positioning of desks and workstations appropriate to the communicative character of advertising work. The reflections off the movable glass walls create the impression of space. [bron: mimoa]
Side is a 5-star hotel in Hamburg located at a very central location, between the Gänsemarkt square and the National Opera, close to the Binnenalster and only a few minutes walk from art and cultural centers as well as shopping precincts. The architect Jan Störmer created a forwardlooking facade featuring a combination of glass and nature stone that stretches across all 12 floors. From the top 3 floors, you have a wonderful view across Hamburg. This architecture is complimented by the work of designer Matteo Thun. Just minimalist, reducing everything to the bare essentials, that is the fundamental idea behind the work of Matteo Thun when he decorated the public spaces. The atrium-styled lobby, which stretches up to the 8th floor, lives from the illuminated installations of the New York light choreographer Robert Wilson. [bron: mimoa]

The new lecture hall building of Bucerius Law School in Hamburg is located at the intersection of the axes of the old building’s Botanical Institute and opposite the main entrance of the restored buildings. Architects MPP Meding Plan + Projekt designed a new building, putting the historical concept of the garden Tempietto in a landscaped park into a modern form of language. The lecture room is a glass-sheathed hull. The area between the auditorium body and glass façade serves as a development zone and as a climate buffer against cold and heat. [bron: mimoa]
The new library building of Bucerius Law School is in continuation of the old stock at the corner of Jungiusstraße / Marseiller Straße and gives the park behind it an urban edge. The architects understood their design as a symbolic continuation of ‘traditional glass greenhouses’ at this location, which also includes the historical review by Bernhard Greenhouse Hermkes from 1963. In the upper storeys of the new building, there is a library for the 650 students of the college. The use of coloured glass panels on the façade was inspired by books on the back of a shelf. On the ground floor, a lecture hall with hundreds of seats and a new cafeteria are located. [bron: mimoa]

Spengler Wiescholek Competition 1st prize 8 high class appartments and 2 consulates, completion 1993
Fasziniert vom Getty Center in Los Angeles, hatte Bauherr Bertram R.C. Dennoch herrscht nirgendwo Enge. […]
A spacious presentable entrance hall, Alster view for all appartments and a design that could convince the jury to replace an existing clinker brick villa with a new construction were the main issues of the competition. The design bases on the typology of “Alstervillas” and shows a building that convinced client and jury by its elegance and unusual materiality. This school is divided into two main parts; a public area (coffee area, lecture rooms, etc.) and the private area (classrooms, administration area), which are connected by a common entrance, that can also be used separately. The café opens to the yard and a ‘park’. The teachers´room can be connected to this café. For functional and acoustical reasons, the classrooms are separated from the administration area on different floors. The administrative area is situated on the ground floor, with areas for information and public relations found close to the main entrance. The classrooms are on the first and second floor, in front of them there is a waiting zone ‘between’ the trees. A construction of a series of ramps and different staircases leads from the entrance hall to the auditorium on the first floor. This link from the entrance to the second floor allows for a ceromonious procession for guests and serves as the backdrop for public addresses. Quartier Falkenried 18 architect Bolles + Wilson Masterplan Falkenried gewonnen in 1999 Uitwerking 2002-2004, 34.500 m2 vloeroppervlak The anatomy of redundant bus and tram workshop/sheds was co-opted as the organising template for this 1999 premiated Quartier Masterplan. An east west piazza focuses the networked block interior. The principles of the masterplan were: the ‘loftising’of one workshop shed, a brick administration building which grows into penthouses and bus garage doors which envelope row houses. Southward from the piazza a spatial choreography of Office Slab and Housing Tower leads over a raised terrace with a second (zigzag) office façade, past a café/bar, down an Eisenstein stair to street and canal. This perspectival sequence – an opening and closing of large scale urban rooms – is homogenised by its rich and tactile material, a ‘Hamburg-solid turf-fired brick’. [bron: website architect]

Lofts Falkenried 19 BRT Architects Hamburg First prize competition 2000,completed 2003, several awards Use: residential, gastronomy, floor area: 8000 m2 A walk through the former ‘building D’ of the vehicle workshops in Falkenried, is like a journey through time from 1928 to the year 2000. The combination of protected industrial buildings and modern residential units gives the development it’s particular charm. The architects have planned 39 lofts with balconies, terraces or rooftop gardens, together with a ground floor restaurant. The design sought to retain the industrial charm of the existing buildings as far as possible, and to highlight the contrast between old and new. The most significant redevelopment work relates to the L-shaped factory building to the north-east: while the Falkenried facade, as well as the north-west and south-east facades will essentially be cleaned and pointed, the south-west facade will be replaced by a large, steel and glass construction. With the addition of balconies and loggias, the building is three metres wider. A ‘skydeck’ is created on the existing floor above the second floor, with generous penthouse apartments. The dynamic form of the rooftop extension with it’s metal roof, is in direct contrast to the existing brick building. Loft-like apartments are planned as maisonettes in the third and fourth floors, and as apartments on the ground, first, and second floors. Although all of the different apartment types are designed around an open living room, spatial separation is ensured by the location of kitchens, bathrooms and guest toilets. Wohnen+ Bogenallee Ort 22 Blauraum architekten, Hamburg gereed 2005, oppervlak 7100 m2 Residential Recharge – Morphing office cells to living rooms This former office building and parking house from 1974, located in the court of a large urban block, was converted into a residential house with 15 apartments. The building was cored to its shell construction and the housing technology, façade and morphology were rebuilt. Twenty-three parking places were created in the basement accessed by a vehicle lift. The underlying idea was to develop a homogeneous building that simultaneously enables and displays the diversity of the individual apartments. From this approach the open ground plans were individually modified by adding extra living spaces, so-called “flex-boxes”, at different points. By turning the inner rooms “inside out” these special elements function as spatial extensions accommodating kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, providing space for a sauna, the bath or the dining table. Due to the east-west alignment of the building a varying façade concept was chosen with a perforated façade facing the street (Bogenallee) and a completely glazed façade towards the court-yard. Despite the closed street-facing façade, the building interacts intensively with its immediate environment. Through the lateral vitrification of the staggered boxes, the room alignment is rotated by 90 degrees and, in an unusual manner, one is located in an interspace between protected privacy and urban space. The Living + conversion serves as a model for upgrading tired office buildings from the ’60s and ’70s into desirable and comfortable urban apartments. Neue Messe 23 Ingenhoven architects 1st prize international competition 2003, completion 2009 GFA 66.100 m², 3 to 6 stories Hamburg’s new trade fair and exhibition centre is woven into the fabric of the city. It creates a boulevard as a living and vivid city space along Karolinenstraße. The central connecting axis is the exhibition centre loggia, fully glazed and linking all areas to one another. The division of the facades and the eave heights of the roof shells integrate harmoniously into the city. The concept for the exhibition halls follows a continuous modular principle, which allows a high degree of flexibility. The halls are naturally ventilated and enjoy natural daylight. The halls can be divided into smaller units by rearranging the rail-mounted partition walls. [bron: website architect]

Politiekantoor Davidwache Expansion – Kastanienallee / Davidstrasse Prof. Bernhard Winking Architekten BDA, 2004 Friz Schumacher designed the Davidwache in 1913 in the form of a gabled middle-class house. The expansion is an attempt to expose the previously predominantly visible gables, while at the same time merging the old and the new building with a bridge structure. The result is a building that consciously absorbs the formal spirit of the Schumacher building, forming a unity together with it, and at the same time emphasises its own self confident character reflecting present times. The five star hotel and a retail and office building in Hamburg St. Pauli is part of a 110.000 sqm housing and office development on the former Bavaria brewery grounds. The site can be regarded as an urban vacuum where new development needs to take up a mediating role between the different neighbouring urban situations. The 20-storey hotel complex consists of different staggered volumes, where the height of each volume corresponds with the eaves of the surrounding buildings. The hotel tower with its 328 hotel rooms rises above the city, creating a new visual landmark for Hamburg’s skyline. From the direction of the water it appears as a slim, vertical volume, fitting into the topographyof the famous “Hafenkrone”, the crown of the harbour, a series of impressive turn-of-thecentury buildings and church spires along the embankment of the river Elbe. The glass-bronze façade covers the buildings as a homogenous layer, unifying the different volumes. [bron: mimoa]
[bron: website architect]

The historic buildings along Hamburg’s Fleet - the historic canal in the city centre - are packed tightly together. The office building Grimm 6 at Nikolaifleet, is also influenced from the traditional scale: the building takes it’s narrow and tall proportions, the number of storeys and it’s vertical emphasis, which is expressed in a building set-back reaching into the roofscape, from the proportions of the historical buildings. The conception thereby orients itself in terms of the height to the other structures in the immediate (canal) vicinity. [bron: mimoa]
The building gives the long-neglected historical center of Hamburg a striking new façade. The office building is located on historic ground: in-between the building of the Patriotic Society and the Commerz Bank, where the Renaissance City Hall, the Stock Exchange and the Hotel Kaiserhof used to be. In addition, there was the former Lloyd-yard, on whose grounds the new building was created. The entire ensemble disappeared in the fire of 1842. The structure is strikingly visible in the axis of the Domstrasse and is also on the east-west street clearly perceptible. The architect had the complex task -in the diversity of the heterogeneous orientation of surrounding buildings– to adopts itself to the different scales of the surroundings. The choice of material is restrained: metal and glass. The façade creates depth in a masterly manner, and distinguishes itself from many recent glass buildings. [bron: mimoa]

Hamburg’s Chamber of Commerce required a more intensive use of their existing neo-classical building on Adolphsplatz. The brief for the 2003 design competition anticipated the introduction of several additional floor levels within the existing Börsenhalle and a structure which respects the fabric of the historic building. The design proposal adds a total of five new levels which occupy a relatively small proportion of the hall in order to preserve its generous spatial character. A business start-up center, consultation, exhibition, club and meeting room facilities for members, guests and visitors are arranged in a sculptural manner. The uppermost level affords access to generous roof terraces and beautiful views out over the roofs of Hamburg through a band of arched clerestory windows. The new structure is composed of layers and planes, where lightness, immateriality and reflection contrast the solid, elaborate walls of the existing building. A variety of fascinating spatial solutions emerge within both the new structure and in relation to the existing building. The light, free-floating character of the new extension is complemented and accentuated by an LED lighting system that was jointly developed by the architects and Nimbus Design. Although not part of the original architectural competition entry, the lighting system was later seen to offer extraordinary potential for special lighting effects. The “House in a House” is the first structure in the world that is completely lit by LED lamps.

Vanaf hier wandelen we richting centrum.

Timber and steel are the materials from which ships are made – and beside the glass facade, these are also the materials which dominate the office building at Neumühlen, in Hamburg. The floor plan of the horseshoe-shaped building is orientated towards the river, and the building appears to embrace the river. The building cantilevers almost ten meters over the south-facing embankment of the Elbe, and the glass facades offer spectacular, panoramic views of the Elbe and it’s banks. The double facade protects the interior of the building from sunlight, cold, and also offers acoustic protection. The entrance is unusual: it is located within the embankment on the same level as the underground parking. Thus, the employees and visitors enter directly from the car park into the representative main entrance area, despite entrance being on the embankment level. Like the upper storey’s, this area is also well-lit, without artificial lighting: daylight floods the room through a 15 metre wide glazed embankment facade. [bron: website van architect]
The volume of the building is based on a masterplan in which a lowered garage structure aligned to the street is topped by several office building facing the river. The EDEL headquarters comprise 3300 sq meters of office space on three levels over a ground floor housing the reception, bar, restaurant and auditorium. The first two levels are sitting completely on the podium, while the three upper levels cantilever over the polder, overlooking the river. The transparency of the ground floor indicates the public character of the interior; the space is extended to the outside terraces. The idea of the building is different from the usual office building, nearing the idea of the “campus” where young people have the chance to meet the employees of the company and communicate with visitors from all over the world. The ‘prow’ of the ship-like building cantilevering for almost 40 metres, is a dynamic addition to the ‘stern’ of the neighbouring ferry terminal. The building, supported by a steel-framed construction, contains approximately 9000 square metres of office space. The depth of the building makes it possible to locate communication areas such as kitchens or conference rooms as well as archive areas and print rooms within the central zone of the building. The large, open areas with freely positioned installations create a generous working atmosphere. The users can savour the spectacular panoramic views over the harbour through the glazed façades. For those who don’t have any time during the daytime, they can catch up in the evening: on the rooftop terrace on the upper floor of the building, which can also be reached by guests via an open staircase at the rear of the building. The prize-winning loft house on the Großen Elbstraße reacts to the various contextual issues. The fanning glass facade on the south side forms associations with the lightness of water, in strong contrast to the more massive, green, copper facade on the land-side of the building. The building stands on columns, which serve to provide protection from flooding and at the same time they emphasise managed to provide 2800 square metres of floor space onto the extremely tapered, 450 square metre wedge-shaped site. With it’s striking appearance and it’s open planning, the loft house is an outstanding part of the urban development plan, which aims to generate a ‘pearl necklace’ of noteworthy architectural objects of flexible use, along this stretch of the Elbe. [bron: website van architect]
Elbberg Campus Altona 12 Große Elbstraße 1 architect Bothe Richter Teherani (BRT), 2003, oppervlak 7.600 m² Hamburg-based Bothe Richter Teherani (BRT) has created a consistent body of work since the firms inception in 1991, primarily office buildings. Formed by partners Jens Bothe, Kai Richter and Hadi Teherani, who all attended school at the Technical University in Braunschweig, their work is characterized by a contemporary aesthetic that expresses their main idea of wholeness, the integration of function, cost-efficiency and sustainability. The Elbberg Campus strives to create wholeness from new and existing buildings in the Altona area of Hamburg. Consisting of office space and two types of living space (apartments and lofts), the mixed-use development places the office building alongside the road with the residential elements set back and a terrace created in-between the two. This open space has an irregular shape that is dictated by the existing buildings and the site and surroundings. The character of each use is rendered differently, the office building featuring curved and folded, metal-clad planes that snake up and around the building. Seen on end from the street, glass walls with louver fill in the areas between these planes. Residential uses are propped upon the raised terrace plinth in
low volumes that bend to follow the site, each accessible by footbridges from the courtyard. Each component in and of itself is a well-done piece of architecture that could stand on its own. As a total mixed-use development, the terrace space becomes very important, the variety of spaces creating an interest that would not be available otherwise. The Elbberg Campus is a valuable addition to the urban redevelopment of the Elbe embankment and nearby harbor. Situated between warehouses, industrial buildings, and green areas, the Elbberg Campus combines living, working and relaxation with one another. The design is based upon the remains of existing buildings: newly designed offices, apartments and lofts are located within a newly designed park landscape, following the contours of the slope. New footpaths, staircases and terraces connect the areas above the Altonaer Balkon, to the harbour. The office building is orientated towards the public spaces: the roof of the base of the building serves as an extensive terrace, offering a wonderful view over the harbour. Private and common areas within the complex are, on the one hand, clearly defined, and at the same time, harmoniously interwoven with a variety of architectural styles. [bron: website van architect]

LUNCHTIP (nog checken)!
The ferry and cruiser terminal in the former fishing harbor at HamburgAltona is a maritime gateway to the world. The building is simultaneously used as a terminal and office building. On the waterside it is generously glazed, with automatically adjustable shading lamellas and a steel footbridge dividing the facades. The important central and maritime location of the terminal requires that it should be an attraction, even if no ferries or cruisers are moored at the quays, enlivening the area with its own dynamic. The site has excellent connections to the city public transportation network. This is important because the different kinds of traffic are separated: lorries, container-trucks, cars and pedestrians. The height of the outside walls of the semi-basement parking garage fulfils the height regulation stipulated by the harbour authorities as a protection against flooding. Double pillars (A-columns) with pre-fabricated joists (V-beams) form the skeleton of the supporting structure. The beams span the entire building so that no supporting pillars are necessary. Users are absolutely free to furnishing and divide the interior spaces how they like. The use of prefabricated concrete structures also guarantees easy maintenance and efficient fire-protection. The beams are provided with serially-positioned holes for the technical installation systems. The large number of prefabricated elements enables a building at low cost. [bron: website van architect]

The building comprises the conversion of two historic warehouse buildings, both under a preservation order, their cubic volume being reinforced by the addition of new apartment levels. As an urban-planning landmark the Stadtlagerhaus forms the initiation of the redevelopment of the Holzhafen. Office use and restaurants are proposed on the existing levels, an inviting foyer allows for the access to commercial areas. Conditioning and acoustic buffers for the apartments of the newly added storeys are provided by a double-skin façade which can be opened. Due to the location in an area exposed to the danger of flooding, the building has a watertight concept on the ground-floor and is connected to the „mainland” via a steel bridge. According to the architect, the design was inspired by the old foundry and the forms of the cast iron objects produced there, by the alloy of contemporary Eastern and Western cultures, by the memory fragments of surreal first-trips to Asia and by a deep appreciation for the Eastern recognition of a spiritual essence in nature. Four gigantic pillars tower from the ground to the top floor of the former factory hall, while parts of the original foundation in exposed brick have been dramatically lit, serving as unusual divisions in the restaurant area.
