SYNOPSIS The present-day Italy-Slovenia border, with the emerald-green water of the Isonzo river running between the Alpine peaks, became the scene of 11 WWI battles between 1915 and 1917, in which over half a million Austrian, Italian, Slovenian, German, Croatian, Hungarian and more than thirty thousand Czech soldiers were killed. Zdendo Mužič, a 72-year-old Slovene, has been excavating WWI relics that testify to the presence of vast numbers of men who fought here. There are personal belongings of both friends and foes, of those who killed and who were killed. The relics such as a fountain pen, a ring or a shot flask have served as real props for a partly dramatized documentary entitled „Even the Ground Was Dead“. Bronislava Janečková, the author of the documentary visits the war sites of 1915 – 1918 mentioned in the letters and diaries of Czech soldiers. Parts of the report shot on the battle sites alternate with dramatized passages, they blend together, as well as the Slovenian and Czech languages. The memoirs of the soldiers give us an insight into the dramas and lives of those who, often quite involuntarily, defended the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

I am holding an ordinary metal ring engraved with 1914-1916…the period of the first half of the Great War, as it is known. A soldier was perhaps given the ring for good luck – because it’s also engraved with a four-leave clover… And he must have fought for Austro-Hungarian Empire as Italy declared war on Austria only in 1915. He might have been an Austrian, a Slovene, a Hungarian or a Czech. The ring is cut, you can stretch it…that’s how, they say, rings from dead bodies of soldiers were removed. Zdeno found the ring in the Karst mountains … where the Czechs were fighting, too. F/X war - rain over it in the half of the next sequence Voice 2: It is unnerving to feel the death so near, it may come any moment now. Five of our soldiers were killed in the morning…the rest of us are quiet, unable to utter a single word. Another Italian offensive is to be launched. We are waiting in low light, crouched in the trench. Lojza Bína is showing me a ring, for good luck, supposedly – bought at a fun fair in Kolín. Voice 3: As if a metal ringlet could save life in the war turmoil around. I don’t believe in superstitions! Voice 2: …he takes off the ring violently and dashes it against the rocks with the same movement as he is used to throwing grenades. Voice 3: Perhaps I have thrown away my luck… Music Voice 2: We’re entrenched deep, shrouded by dense fog, both “we” and “they”. Fathers of families, lovers, grandfathers, laddies with a baby’s face. That’s where worlds combat. Germanism and Romanism…A slice of world history is made here. Music Rajchl repo 1: 1.11´

Buďte připraveni!“ Hlas 2: Bylo to k zbláznění.

In April 1915, in the Treaty of London Italy committed to enter the war and was promised by Allies the territory of South Tyrol, Istria and Dalmatia. A month later it really declared war on Austria-Hungary. Jiří Rajchl – a historian of the Military History Institute The relief of northern Italian territories adjoining Austria-Hungary didn’t actually promise great offensive possibilities as the border ran chiefly through the Alps. Therefore the Italians could take the only logical course in order to advance into the A-H territory - along the Isonzo river. The Isonzo, or the Soča is a border river between Italy and present-day Slovenia which opened way to the major strategic target of the Italian offensive, e.g. to the strategically important port of Trieste. Such an achievement could have given more possibilities to push deeper in A-H territory in direction Ljublana. The Isonzo river saw altogether 11 battles in 1915 – 1917. Music in the background Voice 1: The rocky plateau of Karst is within view of the Adriatic Sea. Václav Kasal, a 34-year-old businessman from Žiželice, the father of a just born son, was sent here in the Austro-Hungarian uniform. He kept a record in his diary of two years being a soldier on the Karst. Music blends with F/X war Voice 2: We are crouched in the trench and rained upon with stones, bullets whistle. The Macaroni’s barrage hasn’t ceased for two hours now. Quite absurdly, they’ve just brought some canvas flask with wine but no one has touched it. Bína turns to me. Young, single, yet a veteran. Voice 3: “Kasal, there’s no way we’ll survive this! When it pops off here, we’ve had it!” Voice 4: “You’ve got to go back to the line! The Hungarians have surrendered. Be ready!” Voice 2: Enough to drive us crazy, this. Neither did we want to surrender to Italians, nor fight for Austria. Quite beyond us what this Italian devil is after and why he has sunk his

Leží tu hadry, dráty, části výstroje, pušky, bodáky, ruce, nohy a čerství italští i naši mrtví. Leží mezi roztříštěným kamením a kolem nich ohromné kaluže krve. To jsou zbytky našeho druhého praporu. A práská to znova. Skáčeme do zákopu. Hlas 2: Ztráty jsou obrovské. Italové pronikají do vnitrozemí u Lokvice. Tam cítíme bubnovou sílu italských baterií, které srší a vrhají granáty křížem krážem – zleva i zprava. Běžím jako bez hlavy. Všechno kolem je ostřelováno, ječí snad i železo a kamení. Hlas 4: Ale proč naše děla mlčí? Hlas 3: Dostala by jich od Italů za každou ránu zpátky alespoň stovku. Hudba Hlas 2: Jdeme dál, všichni tiší a vyděšení.

teeth in the Slovenian land, of all. Then the adjutant produces a map with a plan outlined by the Treaty of London. Voice 4: “Look, I’ve stolen the map from an Italian prisoner…here’s Javornik, Gorizia, Postojna, Bajnšice – they should all be Italian!” It reads only Italian names!” F/X Shrapnel explosion and war Music Voice 2: The battle has been raging for three days. The sight of it is both breathtaking and ghastly. The landscape’s on fire, with thick black and white smoke drifting above it. Everywhere you can hear strange droning as if during an earthquake. Voice 3: There’s been an alarm urging us back into the line to support the second battalion at Lokvice. There are corpses all around the village, the road’s been under heavy bombardment, showered with stones and iron. Scattered rugs, wires, parts of military equipment, rifles, bayonets, arms, legs, and corpses of both Italians and our soldiers. They’re lying in huge pools of blood among stones blasted in splinters. That’s what is left of our second battalion. It’s strafing again and we’re forced to jump in a trench. Voice 2: The losses are enormous. The Italian troops are advancing inland at Lokvice. That’s where we feel the drum-like power of Italian batteries which spit and hurl shells in all directions, left and right. I run as if I’ve lost my head, through sheets of heavy fire all around. Apparently even the stone and iron scream. Voice 4: Why are our cannons so quiet? Voice 3: Because we’d receive a hundred-fold reply from the Italians for a single shot. Music Voice 2: We’re progressing further, everyone’s quiet and scared. Our line is half empty everything reeks of corpses, rubbish, there’s carrion and musty smell. An old, once well-fortified trench’s been ravaged.

Trvá to už tři dny. říjen 1915 Rakousko- uherské dělostřelectvo začalo pálit do italských seřadišť.

It’s been going on for three days. The ground trembles. Pictures of doom as the detonations flash. Like in a bizarre dream, you wonder in disbelief whether such a thing could be really happening. The rain brings finally some relief. The artillerymen can’t focus in the rainy weather. Rain and thunder Voice 3: The whole sky seems to be annoyed by the human desolation on the ground and has just erupted over our heads. Voice 4: Rain and lice, these are the two biggest enemies of the Italian soldier. Austrian cannons come only after! Voice 1: Wrote an Italian soldier in his war diary at the other side of the front. His name is Benito Mussolini. Thunder Music On 21 October 1915 the Austro-Hungarian artillery put a barrage on the Italian marshalling areas and claimed thousands of casualties within half an hour. Before each combat Italians defect to the enemy, not willing to face the Austrian machine guns anymore…they don’t give a damn about their generals’ goals: Trieste and Dalmatia. The battle of the Doberdò Karst – a stony plateau at the town of Gorizia - lasted for two years, until 1917. Repo 2 Rajlich: 1.00´ The Italian offensive generally lacked military inventiveness. To put it simply, the Italian generals led by the Chief of Staff, General Cadorna, forced the troops against the A-H positions at great costs and received only minor new territories in as many as 11 battles. They only met with success in capturing an important town of Gorizia and drawing the Austrians from the Banjšice plateau, but that was it. Their heavy losses were comparable to casualties at the western front at the Somme or at Verdun. We need to realise that those 11 battles claimed 300,000 Italian soldiers in contrast with only 200,000 at the other side. Cannons Music Voice 1:

Hlas 3: Ranění Maďaři sténají a volají o pomoc a plazí se zpět s krvavou hlavou a zraněnými končetinami. Půldruhé roty je zajato, další rozehnáni a zabiti. Ustupují do zadní linie. Ze 120 zůstalo jen 22. Hlas 4: Monte san Michele padl! Jeho dobytí je pro nás úžasnou záležitostí… Hlas 1: Hlásí italský generál Duca d´Aosta. Hlas 4: Ti, kteří včas nezahodili zbraň, byli s naprostou převahou italských vojáků zlikvidování. 18 July 1915. The second Isonzo battle. General Cadorna gathered an army of one hundred thousand at the foot of the Karst plateau. 840 cannons are directed towards the Gorizia bridgehead and towards Monte San Michele. The mount in the centre of the plateau is to be defended by 37 Hungarian battalions. They have got 29,000 rifles but only half as many cannons as the Italians. Voice 3: It stopped raining. We’ve been provided with two-wheeled carts – allegedly to arrange a quick supply of ammunition to the trenches. Voice 2: 4am – the Italian troops launched an offensive against Monte San Michele. The cannons are spitting fire the defenders haven’t seen before. Seven hours later it’s the infantry’s turn to attack… Voice 3: Injured Hungarians are moaning and crying for help as they crawl back with bleeding heads and wounded limbs. One and a half companies are captured, other dispersed or slain. They retreat to the back line. 120 reduced to 22. Voice 4: Monte San Michele has been captured! What a spectacular affair to us, its conquest… Voice 1: Reports General Duca d’Aosta. Voice 4: Those who hadn’t put down their arms in due time were massacred by an overwhelming superiority of Italian troops. We hunted them down like deer!

BJ A touch of the 21st century here… kind of a transmitter, isn’t it? Well, that’s how it is. JV We’re standing on the top of Monte San Michele, facing the cannon embrasures. The Italians, having conquered Monte San Michele, only needed to dig holes in the opposite directions and turned the cannons towards the Komen Karst… (walking) BJ There are huge caverns in front of us that sheltered enormous cannons sticking out of dark grey rocks. (walking) F/X walking from the repo blends with F/X fighting Voice 3: The Hungarians, though in greater number, couldn’t hold it…and there’s hardly half of us twenty-eights left…once again we’re defending Monte San Michele. Well, ‘monte’. Monte stands for a mountain…it’s rather a miserable 275-metre high stony knoll. Voice 2: 25 November 1915. For seven days the hill has been showered with hundreds of grenades and mines, and behind the curtain, dense phalanxes of Italian infantry are coming into view. There’s more iron than stones. Už podruhé srážíme Italy ze severního svahu... Vypadá to, že se množí jako kobylky. Další a další řady postupují proti nám. To nemůžeme udržet!
Kdybychom selhali, cejch zrádců a zbabělců by prý „Osmadvacátníkům“ i českým vojákům zůstal navždy... Hudba Hlasy do lehkého halu

For a second time we’ve pushed the Italians down the northern escarpment… they seem to multiply like grasshoppers. More and more lines are advancing against us. There’s no way we can hold it! Voice 2: Damn it, when are they finally going to relieve us? Voice 3: The eighth daybreak on this cursed hill! I must be dreaming! The moment we shoot ten of them down, there’re another fifty, hundred…
Repo from Monte San Michele – J.Vričan: …these lads actually managed to capture Čiba 2 – peak 2 and pushed the Italians back to the second line of defence…during the combat, the battalion commander was killed, though his body was never found. The troops stopped at the spot height 175. Fighting for this peak reached a climax in the fourth Isonzo battle – the Italians had tried to take it for 10 days, up till 2 December. It claimed two thirds of the forces, mostly young boys, but they managed to hold the hill nevertheless. As if they craved to prove that the Czechs aren’t cowards but way better, because they held the peak. The Austrian High Command, AOK, appreciated their infantry regiment two days later. (steps on the stones) Music Voice 3: Here, on the slopes of Monte San Michele, we should have cleaned our good name as soldiers of Austro-Hungarian army. Had we failed, the „twenty-eights“, or Czech soldiers, for that matter, would be forever branded traitors and cowards… Voice 1: Clearing their reputation before Austrian generality cost lives of many. Tragic, as it may be, the history did not vindicate them as they’ll be forever perceived as those who fought for the hated Austria-Hungary. Who could have foreseen that, instead, deserters and prisoners, turned Czechoslovak legionaries, would steal all the glory? These lads were heroes and excellent soldiers but at a wrong side. Hlas 2: Ať bychom udělali cokoliv, vždycky budeme pro někoho zrádci. Zběhnout k nenáviděným Italům, před kterými jsme vlastně bránili kus slovanské země? Bojovat proti svým? Hlas 4: „My pro vás nemůžeme mít ani úsměvu politování! Vy zoufalí, chladní a neteční čeští vojáci z rakouských zákopů. Hlas 3: Nahnali nás do války přece. A my měli rodiny. V mlze k propasti jste šli, šli… a šli. Repo Rajlich: 0.30´

Voice 2: Regardless of our actions we’d be always perceived as traitors by someone. To defect to the hated Italians, against whom we’ve been guarding a piece of Slavic land? To fight our own fellow soldiers? Voice 4: “We can’t give you the least pitying smile! You desperate, cold and indifferent Czech soldiers from Austrian trenches.” Voice 3: We were forced in the war, weren’t we? Austria and Italy were equally keen on territorial gains… Voice 2: We’d become traitors in the eyes of our commanders if we defected to the Italians… desertion was punished with death penalty…and we had families. Voice 4: You’re way off the scale of human contempt … you are just dust slavishly dependant on the vagaries of the wind. Voice 3: Back then who of us could have anticipated the collapse of the monarchy, have we misjudged the future? ... A silly situation. Over 30,000 Czechs killed only at the Isonzo front…30,000 fallen soldiers who are, more or less, overlooked in silence. Voice 2: Even after death we get screened according to the uniform colour. We’re traitors who have laid down their lives like heroes… Voice 4: You marched like a herd of sheep. Through the fog you marched to meet the abyss…you marched on and on. Voice 1: This curse of hatred was worded and published by General Otakar Husák, a lieutenant, a legionary, and the Czechoslovak Minister of Defence as of 1920. And so, in the First Czechoslovak Republic thousands of Czech soldiers, who refused to desert from the A-H army or didn’t enter the legions in captivity, were branded a second-class soldier. Vykopal mnoho munice. I střely z děl, která na frontu ochotně dodávala Plzeňská škodovka…to delala tovarna Škoda… pasy, granaty……zbytky dýmek, břitva, pero. I za se pireli pisma…. (stahovat) Hudba Hlas 3: Beru do rukou pero a píšu vám, moji milí, protože počítám s tím, že z této bitvy nemusím vyjít živý… Z dopisu chorvatského velitele Vlado Pavlíčka Mám na povel 60 mužů. Všichni sedí schouleni kolem mne a zkoumají mě takovými divnými pohledy a jako by říkali: „Neveďte nás tam, kde je jistá smrt. Mám doma ženu a děcka a oni nebudou mít nikoho, když padnu…“ Cítím, jak těžký úkol mám v rukou. Jediným rozhodnutím mohu zmařit život mnoha nevinných. Někteří mladí vzlykají. Nechci dát najevo pohnutí, a musím zůstat klidný… Chladnokrevnost mi pomáhají udržovat cigarety a rum. Hlas 2: Máme se připravit na útok. Srbský svobodník - starší člověk - se mi dívá zblízka do očí. A hundred years that have elapsed since the outbreak of WWI is a sufficient period of time to start looking at the soldiers killed in the A-H army as well as 5,000 fallen legionaries though the lens of victims. They were, indeed, the victims of WWI, no matter which side they fought for. Such an approach has been common in western countries for decades, and thus I can’t see any reason why the Czech Republic cannot adopt a similar one. Where people were dying on the Karst plateau, Zdeno Mužič searches for war relics. He has unearthed a lot of ammunition including artillery shells from cannons delivered to the front willingly by Škoda Factory, Pilsen …to delala tovarna Škoda… pasy, granaty……remains of pipes, a razor, a pen. I za se pireli pisma…. (fading) Music Voice 3: I am taking my pen to write to you, dear all, as I am conscious I might not return from this battle alive… From the letter of Vlado Pavlíček, a Croatian commander I am in charge of 60 men. They’re sitting, crouched, around me, studying me with these peculiar looks, as if they were saying: “Do not lead us where the death is certain to come. I’ve got a wife and children at home, they’ll have no one to look after them, if I am killed…“ I am conscious of the daunting task I am facing. A single decision of mine might thwart the lives of many innocent. Some young soldiers are sobbing. I am willing not to show any emotion, and remain calm…Cigarettes and rum help keep me cool-headed. Voice 2: We are to get ready for an attack. A Serbian lance corporal – an elderly man – is looking closely in my eyes. Voice 4: Vašek, there’s no way any of us is coming back! Here are two letters, one to my brother-in-law, and the other to my wife. The last will…

Kulka mu vlétla vedle nosu do tváře a temenem vyjela! Skoro ani žádná krev neteče. Sedí proti mně tiše. Dívám se… jak se umírá. Na bolest, na ty vytřeštěné oči. Maďar zírá před sebe a pak… pak se pomalu kácí na kabát poležený vedle. Je mrtvý. Hudba Hlas 4: Je noc. Měsíc svítí a granáty šustí vzduchem. Rakety různých barev osvětlují zákopové linie. Sem tam štěkne puška. Občas práskne krátkým třeskotem mina. Nedaleko 102.
Hlas 3: To snad není pravda, támhle vpravo! Hlas 4: Po silnici tam nerušeně pochodují nekonečné kolony dalších italských vojáků. Hlas 3: A vlevo…. tam taky!

Voice 2: I got stiff! What about me… Paper, I’ve got, but to write it? I am staring helplessly in front of me. Music Voice 2: Next to me, I watch a stout Hungarian rise. He has gripped his rifle, climbed on the top of the trench, put a foot forward in order to strike, but stopped abruptly. He has turned his back to the enemy and sat down on a stone. He’s sitting, motionless, in the open like a statue. Only then do I realise he’s injured. A bullet has hit him next to the nose and flown out on the top of his head! He’s hardly bleeding. He’s quietly sitting opposite me. I watch him…die. His pain, his wild eyes. The Hungarian stares in front of him and then…then he slowly collapses down on a coat lying next to him. Dead. Music Voice 4: It’s night. The moon is shining and grenades are rustling through the air. Projectiles of different colours are illuminating the trench lines. A rifle barks every now and then. Sometimes a mine crashes with a short roar. Not far off the 102nd Benešov Regiment are fighting for the spot height 144 – Gorjupa Kupa. Still shaken by the shell fire, we stare in silence from the trenches at the open lines of attackers rushing towards us down the hill and mow down several of them in sheets of machine-gun fire. The commander is ready to seize the peak, just when he shouts, panic-stricken… Voice 3: That can’t be true, over there on the right! Voice 4: Endless columns of more Italian troops are marching undisturbed along the road. Voice 3: And on the left….the same! Voice 4: A second line of Italians gush out from direction Lake Doberdò. The columns are gradually closing us in a big tightening noose. What a frantic situation. And more of them just in front of us, about to break through into our trenches.

To není k vydržení… Zahazuju pušku a utíkám s Italy. Křičím na ně – Čau Italiáni! Io prigoniero! (já vězeň!) Hlas 3: Kam běžíš, Venco? Co blbneš! Hlas 2: V kouři jsem ztratil směr. Zakopávám o mrtvé a raněné, kteří se plazí všemi směry. Pak padám do zákopu. Commander Wandke got stiff – as if he couldn’t believe his own eyes – and commanded: Voice 3: „Rifles – fire up, machine guns – turn by 180 degrees and fire in the rear!! Voice 2: Most surprisingly, no one has thrown his rifle away or gone into captivity. Instead we’re throwing grenades and shooting into the overwhelming odds of Italians. They fall perhaps by hundreds. An insane massacre. It is genuinely unpleasant to shoot the enemy in the back, but there’s nothing we can do. If I don’t kill, I will be killed. F/X Grenade explosion Music Voice 2: The smoke is getting thicker and thicker. The Italians are running in it and their eyes, full of terror, are shining wildly through a layer of dust. The machine guns keep strafing from both sides. Every moment somebody falls to the ground. Unbearable, this… I am throwing away my rifle to join the running Italians. I shout at them - Ciau Italians! Io prigioniero! (I prisoner) Voice 3: Where are you running, Venca? Have you gone mad? Voice 2: I’ve lost my way in the smoke. I keep stumbling upon dead and injured bodies as they crawl in all directions. Next I am falling in a trench. Surrounding me, there are dead bodies of both Czech and Italian soldiers. Not until now have I realised, given all the confusion that I’ve rushed in our trench. I dig my face in the soil and burst madly into tears. I didn’t manage to defect another time. Voice 3 The Hungarians are retreating to the east, followed by the Italians who promptly break through this free gap, and thus, get in the rear of the 24th Czech-Slovenian Mountain Brigade. Moreover the telephone connection with the headquarters at the lake has been interrupted… Voice 4: Hello, can anybody hear me? Damn it, we need some reinforcements, hello!

Hlas 3: Ještě před obklíčením nás napadlo uzavřít tu vzniklou mezeru a začali jsme postupovat hned za Italy. A pak jsme v té smyčce vybudovali boční linii. A 11. Italská ofenzíva Hlas 2: Přišli jsme do velkého vojenského tábora. Celá 17. divize je tu utábořena. Tábor se jmenuje „Segeti“. A u něj nemocnice. Voice 3: Just before getting encircled, it occurred to us we might close the gap by advancing right behind the Italians, building up a side line in that noose. As if cutting a circle in half. And we achieved the impossible, we did. We started strafing at them unexpectedly from the side and 2,000 Italian elite troops turned and headed for Lake Doberdò… F/X Shrapnel explosion Jozef Vričan – the author of a book on the Isonzo front: In this battle, the Czech soldiers took possibly the bravest actions of all their Karst ventures. They were under attack from two Italian brigades from two sides. As the Italian sources have it, Italian losses ran at 5,000, whereas our soldiers survived in caverns and trenches all the artillery preparations and mortar attacks aimed at the trenches. Davorin and I walked along the trenches, wondering how come they, of all, survived. We found out that their deep trenches had every ten metres a hollowed cavern another five metres deep which provided a perfect hideout during the artillery preparations. When the Italian infantry launched their attack, our lads just pulled out machines guns from the caverns and mowed the enemy’s army down. They were withdrawn at the command of the division commander only the second night, because the Italians had broken through the line of a Rumanian division and it was necessary to retreat in order to stabilise the line of defence. Here’s a sign in Czech that lists the regiments of Czech towns: Kroměříž, Písek, Prague, České Budějovice, Vysoké Mýto, Těšín, Benešov. It was in 1917, the 10 th and 11th Italian offensive. Voice 2: We’ve come to a large military encampment, the whole of the 17th Division are encamped here. The camp is called “Lager Segeti“. There’s a hospital next to it. An urgent desire to get at least injured burns my chest. I wonder: Vašek Kasal, what’s in store for you? An illness appears like a gift…and might be worth your life, increases the likelihood of not getting killed. There are thousands of soldiers in the camp… Austrians, Hungarians, Croatians, Poles, Czechs…all these nations wearing the monarchy uniforms. Vesnice, kostely, statky. Segeti - dům a studna: 1.13 do repa kulisa pes a slepice… zvuky vesnice Až po delší době objevujeme osamělý dům... patří Tono Blažičovi. Tu manka prva vojna—granata, sedem metro globina… Dal mi několik pokroutek užívání a marodní knížku zpět. The Karst Plateau… We are looking for the village of Segeti. There should have been a military camp next to it, as the notes of Václav Kasal have it… But there’s not a single thing – only a highly overgrown stony plateau. We learn that everything was razed to the ground in 1916. Villages, churches, farms. Segeti - house and well: 1.13 FX dog and hen...sounds of the village After a long time, we find a lonely house.... it belongs to Tono Blažič. There was nothing left of the original Blažičes’ house apart from rubbles and a stone well which still bears traces of an artillery shell explosion. (In Slovenian) Tu manka prva vojna—granata, sedem metro globina… Civil inhabitants were moved out and evacuated in the time of the battles. The Blažič family were resettled in Bohemia where they lived for nearly two years... in Slovenian, they talk about iznanstvo - exile. (In Slovenian) I znali ich na Češko Tu Austrijci, Italiáni… sočka fronta, ne? Did your ancestors tell you what it looked like when they came back? Razsuto vsje, razbito. Music Voice 1: And indeed, the military camp had been set up here … Tono Blažič leads the way along an overgrown path in the bushes. A moment longer, an open space with outlines of white-stoned foundations lies in front of us. We’re standing on the site of a former military hospital. The very hospital, Václav Kasal went to see the doctors to, as his memoirs have it… F/X walking in the grass Voice 2: The second day I went to the “sickroom“. The soldiers wait in line for a medical check-up. They look miserable and skinny, with despair in their eyes. They have just got here from the trenches. It was my turn, and I faced a young doctor – an assistant. I came forward. Kasal Wenzel – I can’t keep food down, doctor. Genuinely sick, that’s how I feel…I was given some medicament and handed the sick book back. After a minute I was done with, sent out of the door! I went slowly, lazily and sulkily back to the barracks. What now? Back to the trench. There’s no other choice.

Segeti nemocnice a lágr: (slovinština míchaná s češtinou) 2.00´do repa Hlas 1: Tu is lager zdej.. pro 15 000 soldaten (slovinština)..BJ Dobře-li tomu rozumím, tak na příjezdové cestě, byly dvě louče, které osvětlovaly vjezd do nemocnice… To byla šestnajsta leta…. A tu byla močna bitka – polno mrtvych tu bylo…( ruch chůze trávou)……….Panu Blažičovi tohle vyprávěl dědeček, který to zažil – i to strašné třídění raněných, kteří byli ocejchováni hned u vchodu nemocnice. Tady někdo rozhodl: máš ještě šanci žít nebo nemáš... A tu je strada a tu vozili raněnce - raněného vojaka - soldáta ……..takže to byla taková hlídka… a první prohlídky raněných a nemocných. … No oni by tu válku asi zdržovali žejo…
Zelené vody řeky Soči a malebné skály okolo stále barví krev. Mladé životy mřou, mrzačí se. Jeden lživý kněz žehná vojínům těmto a tamten zas oněm. Lidi se chvějí v zákopech, mnozí šílí. Bojuje se udatně, protože se musí. Ale s trpkostí a odporem v srdci. Modlím se. Koně se k nám smutně sklánějí.

Segeti hospital and lager: (Slovenian mixed with Czech) 2.00´into repo Voice 1: (in Slovenian) Tu is lager zdej.. pro 15 000 soldaten BJ If I understand correctly, there used to be two torches lightening the access road to the hospital… To byla šestnajsta leta…. A tu byla močna bitka – polno mrtvych tu bylo…( F/X walking in the grass)………. Mr Blažič was told the story by his grandfather who had actually experienced it – even the horrific triage where soldiers were tagged immediately at the entrance to the hospital: somebody determined who would get the chance to survive and who would not... (In Slovenian)A tu je strada a tu vozili raněnce - raněného vojaka - soldáta …….. there was sort of a guard… the first examination station of the injured and sick. … There was a priest… I see, dear me, that sure is brutal… So they were thrown into a mass grave. That's tough… Man, I had no idea. The official reports clearly don’t mention that if a soldier without a leg was carried in, the priest who was sitting here splashed him with holy water and they immediately went on to bury him or kill him somehow...in case he was still alive.. Even if only injured, without a leg or an arm, they were automatically thrown into the grave… fuck. Madonna mia! They would have only slowed the war, wouldn’t they?… I mean if they had to take care of them, it would be dreadful (F/X walking in the grass)………… F/X Cannon fire Music Voice 2: As it grew dark the cannonade resumed. Every now and then the shells illuminated the scene. For a moment bare tree trunks and a house shot to bits, the exclamation marks of horror, heaved into view like monsters. The rubbles of a house and walls gaped into the darkness, begged for mercy, salvation or humanism that, however, did not come, it was deaf. The power of war took over. From the memoirs of Václav Kasal Voice 2: Horror and dread. The green waters of the Isonzo and picturesque rocks around are still being washed in blood. Young lives are marred, or mutilated. One mendacious priest gives his blessing to one group of soldiers, the other to another one. Men shudder in the trenches, a lot of them are going mad. They fight bravely as they are obliged to, though with bitterness and resentment in their hearts. I pray. The horses are leaning down to us sadly.

Hudba Raichl repo 4: Pokud jde o Sočskou frontu, tam italská generalita neprokázala nijak zvlášť velkou invenci. Ty útoky si byly podobné jako vejce vejci a ty výsledky tomu odpovídaly. Rakušané to tam měli trochu jinak, protože byli v pozici obránců a využívali i všech výhod, které jim ta pozice obránců umožňovala. Music Raichl repo 4: As for the Isonzo front, the Italian generality didn’t display any greater ingenuity. The attacks were like two peas in a pod, clearly with corresponding results. Unlike the Austrians – being in the position of defenders, they could enjoy every possible advantage of it. This army, the 5th Army – also known as the Isonzo Army – was commanded by General, later Marshal Boroevič, a Croatian officer. His army’s and his own resistance against 11 Italian offensives earned him a nickname Lion from the Isonzo. Voice 1: One of the central pillars of the Austro-Hungarian defence of the Gorizia bridgehead is Mount Sabotin. Were it to be captured it would be only a matter of time for the defence of other crucial positions to collapse. Sabotin is guarded by few, yet tough and determined fighters. Hudba Hlas 1: Polovina léta 1916. Italský generál Cadorna /kadorna/ kritizovaný za dosavadní neúspěchy potřebuje konečně vítězství … a pro vítězství teď udělá cokoliv. Zatímco rakousko - uherský generál Boroevič posiluje obranu hlavně stavebně, Cadorna vsadil na posily. Hlas 4: Ke Gorici a Sabotinu míří přes 300 tisíc vojáků, 57 tisíc koní a 10 tisíc vozidel. Téměř padesát vlaků za noc. Palebná síla celkem 1300 italských děl proti dvěma stovkám dělů rakousko-uherským, navíc z větší části zastaralým… Podle mých zpravodajů je v tuto chvíli poměr sil na celé frontě 6:1 Hlas 1: Koncem července 1916 velitel italské armády Duca d´Aosta oznámil svým velitelům plán: Hlas 4: Hlavní útok bude veden proti Sabotinu a na Oslavii. Music Voice 1: Half of summer 1916. Italian General Cadorna, criticized for previous failures, needs to achieve some victory at last…he is now willing to do anything for a victory. Whereas the Austro-Hungarian General Boroevič focuses on building defensive fortifications, Cadorna opts for reinforcements. Voice 4: Over 300,000 soldiers, 57,000 horses and 10,000 vehicles are bound for Gorizia and Sabotin. Nearly 50 trains a night. The goal of the supporting attacks against Podgora is to break through to the river. Intense actions are to be concentrated between these two spots in the Pevrnica dolina, whereas the offensive in the south is aimed to confuse the enemy. Země stokrát vyvržená z hlubin a promísená. Ta země tu taky umřela a odmítá jakýkoliv lidský zásah. Kromě kanónů a kulometů tady zabíjejí i samotné hory. V létě tu padají kusy skal uvolněné detonacemi dělových šrapnelů, v zimě laviny. Začátkem roku 1917 přijíždí na severní část Sočské fronty malíř a spisovatel Josef Váchal, přidělený k dělostřeleckému pluku.

Vričan: That was quite unimaginable till that day. The Italians took the defenders in caverns by surprise. The artillery preparation killed all the guards in the front line and those hidden in the caverns had basically no idea that the attack had been under way. The Dalmatian attack had them trapped in the caverns, and as ordered, burnt them out with fire. The Italians seized Sabotin…transferred the entire artillery on the hilltop and ….The Italians positioned the cannons on the hilltop. Voice 1: General Cadorna has finally achieved his victory. He has captured the town of Gorizia… however, he has captured nothing but a pile of ruins. Music Voice 3: The battleground has turned into dust, into a pulp of remains of houses, people and ammunition, crushed over and over again. The ground that has been hundred times eradicated from the depths and mixed. The ground that can’t be grabbed in lumps as it simply doesn't stick together. As if a man dies and will no longer stand erect. Unable to keep its form. Such ground will neither bury the dead, nor will support a hammered stake upright. The water will neither drain nor absorb. The ground has died as well and resists to any human intervention. Voice 1 Wrote a well-known Viennese journalist Alice Schalek when she visited the battlefields the Isonzo frontline in the dramatic year of 1916. Intermezzo F/X flowing river The Isonzo frontline extends for over 50 km from the Karst to the north into the mountainous terrain of the Julian Alps. In certain sequences the emerald Isonzo river winds in narrow valleys between 2,500-metre high peaks. The warfare here is different. Apart from cannons and machine-guns, the mountains claim lives, too. In summer, there are blocks of falling rock caused by detonations of artillery shrapnel, in winter there are avalanches. In early 1917, Josef Váchal, a painter and writer, arrives to the northern part of the Isonzo frontline and gets assigned in an artillery regiment.

Přes levé rameno mám provaz a táhnu. Tekucí potok, řeka či něco co by evokovalo atmosféru vysokých hor Hlas 4: Oko ani nedohlédne do výšin, kde končí svahy. Hlas 1 Vysokohorský terén Julských Alp znamenal i zvláštní způsoby boje. Jednotky obránců využívají výhod nadhledu z úbočí hor a i tady si pracně hloubí kaverny.

I curse the Habsburgs to whom I must do the service. Yet I am full of hope that the devil of Austria will soon lose its soul! Soon commanders come to understand that Váchal is a useless soldier…they realise it as soon as in the first hours, as his battalion is ordered to drag a cannon up a steep slope of the Bovec basin. F/X walking on the stones Music
Voice 4: Two horses have been harnessed and ropes fixed, while the bellowing ranks are indicating us, additional ‘workhorses’, some steep uphill path. I’ve got a rope over my left shoulder as I pull. Up we climb, step by step, constantly shouted at and prodded by the ranks, over stones, roots and thickets. The heavy cannon carriage keeps getting bogged in grenade pits and resists our efforts to move it on. We yell to the rhythm heave-ho at intervals, we curse, struggle, the whip flicks. The gunfire around us is growing stronger. But finally, after two hours the carriage lands on a stony platform above the valley. I manage to hide away in a crevasse and when it’s time to head down to fetch other parts of the cannon I join the others. My trembling body, scraped legs and unusual experience of constant danger only increase my nervous agitation. My endless protests against going down for a seventh time and refusal to obey any command of swearing ranks achieved the desired effect - I am allowed to rest at the stream. Voice 1 Commanders have already learnt that giving a gun in Váchal’s hands poses danger for both himself and his fellow soldiers. He has been thus appointed quarter bloke - not a win-win situation in this terrain. F/X flowing stream, river, mountains Voice 4: Eyes can hardly see in the commanding heights where the mountains slopes end. Voice 1 The mountainous terrain of Julian Alps determined special aspects of warfare. The defending units take advantage of the view from the mountainsides but toil to dig caverns, too. Getting supply is feasible only at night or through tunnels in the rocks, or through tunnels in the snow in winter. The Julian Alps are often covered with snow layer as deep as 10 m.

V 11 hodin stáli jsme my minážtrégři u kuchyně, kde nám odpočítali porce polévky a do kbelíku nalili porce jakési řídké míchanice a fazolí.

F/X falling stone Voice 2: In the darkness the Italian Alpini started to rope down over the Austrian trenches from the rappelling stations between Lipnik and Devil’s Rock. At night they remained hanging on the ropes and then abseiled onto a stone terrace. However, there are perfect acoustics in the mountains, every tiny pebble echoes in the valley as a rolling rock. It didn’t take us long to realise what was going on. The Italians over our heads became an easy prey for our machine guns… Voice 3: Since the dawn the Austrians were shooting at any sign of movement. I kept lying among the dead bodies until the night fell, pretending to be one of them. Voice 1 Recalled later one of few surviving soldiers. His name was Benito Mussolini. Music Voice 4: The end of March 1917. At 11 am we, the quarter blokes, were lined up at the kitchen and had soup of thin mixture with beans counted and poured into a bucket. Voice 1 From a memoir book by Josef Váchal - A painter at the frontline Voice 4 Having left the kitchen, I considered my first and foremost duty to transfer part of the bucket’s contents into my own stomach right around the nearest rock. Sometimes I fell down and spilt half of the contents, pouring some beans behind my neck. Once there was a phone call from Javorček: Voice 3: „Who’s that cannoneer feeding on the rations for the entire company down there behind the stones?" Voice 4: But everyone was well familiar with my falls and the stains of beans on my uniform dispelled any suspicion about my gluttony. I was often off to paint… they were already accustomed to my being sort of unavailable. I was given 28 new coloured chalks and pasteboard. Commanders welcomed an occasional picture. I was painting the skyline of the Bovec passage, wild romance, a lot of gorges, streams, unthawed

Skládám rychle skicák a pospíchám pryč. Přebíhám do úkrytu, ve spěchu popadnu láhev piva a čutoru. V tom mocnější výbuch přede mnou a už létá rozryté kamení. Do čutory něco cinkne, až mě to odhodí na stranu. Hlas 3: Odmítá jít kamkoliv se mu nechce! Hlas 2: Ale…nemůžeme ho ani potrestat, má tu mnoho příznivců i mezi veliteli, kteří ochotně dosvědčí, že není normální. Hlas 3: Měl by být odeslán z fronty… Hlas 2:

avalanches, or ruins of scattered buildings. I hadn’t been painting for long, when I heard this horrid whistling of bullets through the air. I folded my sketch-book quickly and rushed away. I was running for cover, and, in a hurry, grabbed a bottle of bear and a flask. Suddenly a more violent explosion hit the ground in front of me and blasted out splinters of rock. Something clinked into the flask, I was blown aside. I dashed to hide into a long and deep cavern and stayed there till the evening. Voice 3: He refuses to go anywhere he himself doesn’t feel like going! Voice 2: But…we cannot even punish him as he’s got a lot of supporters, including some commanders who would willingly testify that he’s not normal. Voice 3: He should be sent away from the frontline… Voice 2:

Zdeno vykopal dokonce i zdravotnické potřeby a lékařské náčiní – pinzety, injekce a ampule s léky. Italové začali práskat přes řeku do našich pozic… Hlas 1: MUDr.

Well…we might still make some use of him. By the way his paintings aren‘t that bad. I’ve got already two." Music Repo – Zdeno’s collection – inserted comments: Voice 1: The items found on the former battlefields have their own stories that won’t be told anymore…but we might connect the real war relics with stories we already know…(in Slovenian)tuko so bajonety avstrijske, mačete, posabli avstrijske. Šavle….Bombe……………… Zdeno unearthed some medical equipment and instruments – tweezers, injections and ampoules of medicaments (In Slovenian) Svurnoje keše morfi. Ampoules with medicaments inside… this one is still full… of god knows what... well (laughter) F/X fighting Voice 3: We are to take everything. Medicine bottles, dressing material, medical instruments. I went to wake up the stretcher-bearers in the darkness of the night and we grabbed everything what we could carry to the stream where the column had built a spacious rock cavern that could house nearly a hundred men. It wasn’t totally out of the question that the house would be blown up the following day by Italian shrapnel. We moved the injured as well…The Italians from across the river started to pop off at our positions… Voice 1: MD Václav Fleischman could have been a surgeon in the peace times. The belligerent Austria-Hungary sent him to the frontline at the beginning of 1917 and appointed him the head of ambulance service in the town of Canal upon the Isonzo. He gave testimony about his service on the front in the book “Memoirs of a doctor 1910 to 1920”. Voice 3: The unhappy town of Canal – Italians showered it with at least 60 grenades daily. If a grenade dug deep in the ground and exploded, it would blast out a funnel-like crater, sending earth, stones and steel splinters high up in a fountain. If it didn’t hit some unfortunate soldier, the scraps of its steel cover would fling him to the ground. The shockwave would tear lungs, shrapnel caused abdominal trauma, brain contusion

a zhroucení nervové soustavy na dlouhá léta. Vojíni postiženi náhlým výbuchem miny ztráceli na dlouháléta paměť a tělo bylo poznamenáno kropenatou betonáží. Hrozilo i nebezpečí tetanu. To bude naše velká bitva! Ta začala dne 24. října 1917 a přinesla hned v prvních dnech nečekané územní zisky… Následující sekvenci podjíždíme hudbou dramatická rytmika , napětí - ruchy války Hudba Hlas 4: (Váchal)

and nervous system breakdown for long years. Soldiers affected by a sudden mine explosion suffered from long-term memory loss and their bodies were marked with splinters. Besides, there was a danger of tetanus. Voice 3: That is how I saw the war. And yet it was absolutely necessary to give the injured some hope. Hope for further meaningful life. Music
Voice 1 Summer 1917. The frontline is getting worse and worse supplied, scepticism and especially tiredness are setting in. The usual weight of a soldier is about 50 kg, most men are having some health issues. The battlefields of the Isonzo front are turning into a slaughterhouse. The Italians have taken the western half of the Banjšice plateau – the units of General Boroevič are stranded in a hopeless position. Repo Rajchl: The Austrians realised that their frontline might not withstand another Italian offensive and therefore, largely backed by the Imperial Germany, resolved to an extensive offensive action. Voice 2: (Austrian commander) We have amassed a new 14th Army for the grandiose battle of Caporetto, formed by 7 German and 5 Austrian divisions. There are 2,400 trains with 100,000 carloads of ammunition, cannons and reinforcements bound for the frontline. The Germans with 100 fighter aircraft have already gained control of the air above the battlefield. The deployment of 2,000 cannons will match the firepower of the Italian army. A lot of artillery grenades are filled with deadly nerve gases. This is going to be our great battle! It commenced on 24 October 1917 and brought unexpected territorial gains in the first days… Following sequences – music with dramatic rhythm, tension F/X war Music Voice 4: (Váchal)

Celý obzor je jediná jiskra. Rozpoutaná vřava ustavičného hřmění hraje všemi zvukovými akordy bouřky, dunění a rachotu hromů zcela mechanicky, podobná gigantickému bubnování. Hlas 1 Malíř Josef Váchal ještě zažije poslední bitvu na Soči, přejde se svým plukem do Itálie a bude převeden do skladu proviantu. Hlas 4: (Váchal) Stojím u pat ďábla, běsnícího křečí zabíjení o tisíci gestech ohnivých pazourů. V mé obraznosti běží představy bořících se italských zákopů a šílený útěk k záchraně do kaveren – představuji si zoufalé situace – bázeň obyvatelů doupat, očekávajících svou zkázu... Vniká všude – do dobře chráněných pozic v roklích a do jinak nepřístupných kaveren. Smrt nekrvavá, ale stejně hrozná. …ztratili neuvěřitelné množství vojáků a válečné výzbroje více než 5 tisíc kanónů a podobně.. A řvou příšerně.

The entire horizon has turned in a single spark. The unleashed pandemonium of endless thunder echoes mechanically all the acoustic chords of a thunderstorm, the roar and rumble of thunders, similar to gigantic drumming. Voice 1 The painter Josef Váchal is to experience one last Isonzo battle, then his regiment will cross over to Italy and he’ll be assigned to a commissary warehouse. Voice 4: (Váchal) I’m standing at the devil’s foot he’s raging in a spasm of killing, in a thousand gestures of his fiery claws. My imagination conjures up a vision of collapsing Italian trenches followed by a frantic run for cover to the caverns – I picture desperate situations – the dread of the den’s inhabitant expecting their doom… The Italian army was taken by surprise, defeated and about to make a colossal retreat back to the Piave. The Italians blew all the bridges up and retreated behind the river. Voice 3: Stunned by the momentum of the attack and its unexpected strength, the Italian artillery only just coughed a few times. Voice 4: Where the iron is powerless, comes the turn of a destructive and narcotic gas, known as phosgene, that’ll put you to a deadly sleep. It can get everywhere – into well protected positions in the gorges and normally inaccessible caverns. The death is bloodless, but horrid anyway. …they lost an incredible number of forces and war weaponry, including over 5,000 artillery pieces and so on… Voice 3 The ground trembles as if a volcano was to erupt. Hundreds of cannons roar. Terribly, they roar. The entire landscape gives out a terrible roar, trembles and bends in spasms of a tortured body, whipped by thousands fierce slashes. The army of Marshal Boroevič crossed the Piave but had to be withdrawn some days later… Voice 4 (Váchal)

Zůstává nejasným, proč rozhněvaný Bůh dští tolik železem, že padají spravedliví, vinní i nevinní. Toho dne jsem zavřel oči své k lesku a slávě zjevených Bohů. Jak pak možno věřit v onu absolutní spravedlnost? ….zatímco Italové posíleni jednotkami britských, francouzských a amerických spojenců se chystali k té závěrečné ofenzívě… Hlas 3 Co vteřina, to úzkost, co vteřina, to děs a zoufalství zániku. Ten obrovský zápas lidského hněvu, lidské, zvířecí vášně a bestiality… Hlas 1: Na základě Rapallské smlouvy podepsané v roce 1920 připadla po 1. světové válce území, která dva a půl roku bránila poražená rakousko-uherská armáda, Itálii. Hlas 4 (Váchal) Přirozené zákony touto zemí proudící vyzvednou další jedince ke zlu inklinující, jejichž jediným smyslem života je moc k ovládnutí…

It remains unclear why the angry God rains so much iron to slay the just, guilty and innocent. That day I closed my eyes to the splendour and glory of the revelation of Gods. How can you believe in absolute justice after that? …meanwhile the Italians, reinforced by the British, French and American allies were to launch their final offensive… Voice 3 Every second, an attack of anxiety, every second, horror and desperation of doom. This was the last battle on the Piave, and was a very quick one because the AustroHungarian army began to fall in pieces just like the whole Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Voice 2 (Kasal) Will the next generation understand the waste of effort? Will they acknowledge or condemn this combat – if, that is, it had to come to it after all? Voice 1: The businessman Václav Kasal gets home safe and sound after the war. Voice 2 (Kasal) Or didn’t it have to happen? This great struggle of human rage, bestial fervour and brutality… Voice 1: Under the Treaty of Rapallo signed in 1920 Italy received the territory that had been defended by the defeated Austro-Hungarian army for two and a half years. Voice 4 (Váchal) Natural laws governing this land will raise other evil inclined individuals whose only meaning of life is to gain power of control…
