Samenvatting
Een verzameling van problemen bij het modelleren van het kredietrisico Dit proefschrift behandelt een verscheidenheid van problemen die zich voordoen bij de modelering van het kredietrisico. Dit wordt gedefinieerd als een mogelijkheid dat een contractuele tegenpartij niet aan haar verplichtingen zoals overeengekomen in het contract met het gevolg dat de schuldeiser lijdt een financieel verlies. Hoewel het beheer van kredietrisico’s een uitgestrekt gebied is, focus ik op een specifieke categorie van problemen: het vastleggen van afhankelijkheid binnen portefeuilles van mogelijk insolvabelle tegenpartijen. De modellen die gebruikt worden voor dit doel kunnen grofweg in twee klassen verdeeld worden. In de eerste klasse, hebben we factor modellen gecombineerd met een voorwaardelijke onafhankelijkheid veronderstelling. De latente factor wordt geinterpreteerd als de toestand van de kredietmarkt. Er zijn drie belangrijke redenen voor het nut van deze klasse van modellen in kredietrisico toepassingen. Ten eerste is er empirisch bewijs dat de rating overgangen - en de kans op wanbetaling in het bijzonder - variren in de tijd en beweging met de algemene economische omstandigheden mee. Als gevolg daarvan zijn kapitaal buffers nodig om kredietverliezen op te vangen die in grootte variren gedurende de tijd. Ten tweede, de financile markten zijn in het laatste decennium meer liquide geworden. Vervolgens, financile instellingen hebben hun risicobeheer praktijken meer gericht op actief beheer van kredietportefeuilles. Ten slotte, het Basel II-Akkoord staat banken toe veel risico management taken uit te voeren

met behulp van interne modellen. Dynamische modellen voor de kans op wanbetaling kunnen voor een efficinter gebruik van kapitaal zorgen in alle fasen van de conjunctuurcyclus. De belangrijkste conclusie uit de literatuur is dat Hidden Markov Models (HMM) een veelbelovend instrument voor dynamische kredietrisico modellering zijn. Ik draag hier aan bij door te laten zien hoe de bestaande methoden kan worden verbeterd om meer accurate voorspellingen van de insolvabeliteit ratio’s. Afgezien van de noviteit in de theoretische benadering, heeft dit resultaat twee belangrijke praktische aspecten. Ten eerste laat ik zien dat de kredietmarkt zijn eigen dynamiek heeft, die slechts licht overeenkomt met die van de algemene toestand van de economie. Ten tweede breid ik het HMM model uit door waarneembare covariates - dit vertaalt naar een betere beoordeling van de kapitaalbuffer. Ten derde heb ik een case study over kwantiel voorspelling, wat een nadering gestimuleerd door de huidige bancaire regelgeving is. In de tweede klasse van modellen, kunnen wij het gedrag van risicodragende activa modeleren, door middel van hun gezamenlijke cumulatieve distributie functies (CDF) en meer specifiek - via copulas. Copulas stelt ons in staat het marginale gedrag van de gezamenlijke afhankelijkheid structuur te scheiden van de willekeurige vector van belang. Dit zorgt voor een nauwkeurige modellering van gezamenlijke extreme bewegingen van de activa, die van primair belang zijn in het modelleren van kredietrisico. Meer in het bijzonder zijn wij geinteresseerd in de beantwoording van de volgende vraag: kan het gebeuren dat in een evenwichtige portefeuille een onevenredig aantal verschillende bedrijven insolvabel worden? Als dat zo is, zijn wij in staat om uitspraken over die extreme gebeurtenissen statistisch te onderbouwen? In dit verband ben ik een nieuwe flexibele familie van skewed distributies, die het mogelijk maakt om het asymmetrische gedrag in de tail van de distributies vast te leggen. Ik ontleen analytische formules voor de tail afhankelijkheid cofficinten, die het mogelijk maken om het risico van extreme bewegingen onder dergelijke modellen te kwantificeren. Deze distributie klasse is later toegepast op het probleem van het modelleren van Economische Kapitaal voor een portefeuille van credit risicovolle activa. De resultaten van de uitgevoerde studie benadrukken het belang van de regio en de industrie diversificatie van kredietrisico. Afgezien van het tijd-onafhankelijke model zoals hierboven besproken, zijn dynamische copula modellen steeds populairder in het veld. Wij dragen aan de bestaande literatuur op twee manieren bij. Ten eerste stellen wij voor een tijd-varirend copula model dat door parameter wordt aangestuurd. Deze aanpak is nieuw en werd niet eerder behandeld in de bestaande literatuur. worden geschat met behulp van de vertrouwde monsternemingsmethoden. Ten tweede, wij bieden een empirisch voorbeeld ter illustratie van de evolutie van de onderste tail afhankelijke cofficint. Deze toepassing is van cruciaal belang in het kredietrisicobeheer en is een aanvulling op het bestaande onderzoek op het gebied van stochastische correlaties. In tegenstelling tot de bovenstaande observatie-gebaseerde modellen, kan ons model gemakkelijk hoog-dimensionale problemen aan, als het geen bijzondere gebruik van de bivariate structuur maakt.
