Jonathan Swift Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, was not very generous, and he usually gave nothing to servants1. Once a boy brought Swift a heavy basket full of fish and fruit from his master, and said rudely, „Here, my master has sent you a basket full of things.“ Swift, feeling angry with the boy‘s impolite behaviour, said to him: „Come here, my boy, and I will teach you how to give a message a little more politely. Come, imagine that you are Jonathan Swift, and I will be the boy.“ Then he said very politely: „Sir, my master sends you a little present and begs you will do him the honour to accept it.“ „Oh, very well, my boy,“ replied the boy, „tell your master I am much thankful to him, and there is half a crown for yourself.“ Swift laughed and gave the boy a crown for his intelligence. 1 servant – sluha

Jack-O-Lantern An Irish myth tells us of a man named Jack, who once invited the Devil1 for a drink. He convinced the Devil to change into a sixpence in order to pay for their drinks. But instead of paying for whiskey he put the sixpence in his pocket beside a silver cross. That prevented the Devil from changing back. Jack made a deal with the Devil before letting him free that the Devil would never take his soul. When Jack died, he was sent back from the Gates of Hell because the Devil kept his promise not to ask for Jack’s body and soul. On the way back from Hell Jack got lost. The Devil was scared that Jack might stay in the Hell anyway, so he lit a piece of wood which he took from the ground and gave it to Jack. Jack put the burning wood inside a pumpkin, and ever since with this Jack-O‘-Lantern, he has been travelling without destination round the earth. 1 devil – ďábel
28) What did Jack do according to the text?
A) Jack tricked the Devil badly. B) Jack paid for all the drinks in the pub. C) Jack returned home from Hell safely. D) Jack found a piece of burning wood on the ground.
Buckingham Palace Guards Guarding Buckingham Palace is one of the most unwanted jobs in the British Army. Although people think that guarding the Royal family is one of the greatest jobs in the Army, the reality for soldiers is different. Its second name is “boring”. Soldiers spend several hours each day cleaning and ironing their uniforms, polishing their boots, and arms1. There are a lot of equipment checks before they take up their positions outside one of the royal palaces. Any soldier whose appearance is less than perfect can expect a variety of punishments, such as extra guard duty. 1 arms – zbraně

A waitress in a truck stop restaurant received $50,000 in a will1
Matthew had been a regular customer of Do-Drop-In restaurant for the last decade. He was 70 when he started having breakfast there. He drove a 1980 Cadillac that was missing three of its hubcaps2. The car looked just like Mat, as if it hadn’t been washed since 1981. Most waitresses thought Mathew was smelly and a little weird. Each of them hoped he wouldn’t sit in her section. He often spilled food onto the table and seat. He was a terrible tipper – only one dollar was it, even though he usually had several free cups of black coffee. “Oh, he’s just a harmless, lonely old guy,” Amber, one of the waitresses, used to say. Matthew seemed to like her. After the first couple of months of eating at Do-Drop-In, he used to sit only in her section. Whenever the other waitresses saw Matthew pulling up in his old car by the pavement in front of the restaurant, they told Amber that her “boyfriend” was there. They teased Amber about the day Matthew would propose3 to her. “What are you going to tell him?” asked Chelsea. “If you say no, he might drink himself to death. If you say yes, the shock might give him a heart attack.” Amber tolerated her co-workers’ jokes. Matthew continued to visit the Do-Drop-In regularly, but never proposed to Amber. The last time he ate there he was not feeling well. He didn‘t finish the pancakes, and he had tea instead of coffee. For the first time ever, he left Amber a two-dollar tip. In his will1, Matthew left a dollar each to the Republican and Democratic parties which wasn’t surprising as he liked neither of them; the rest of his money, $50,000, was left to Amber. Her co-workers were surprised but later some of them were annoyed. “You’re supposed to share the tips,” said Chelsea. “We’ve always distributed the tips equally. This $50,000 was just an extra-large tip from a regular customer, and you should share it with the rest of the breakfast crew and let everyone enjoy the money.” 1

Pak nalezenou alternativu přiřaďte dané osobě a dále už s ní nemusíte pracovat. Stejně postupujte u ostatních dvojic. • Některé informace v textech jsou z hlediska řešení nadbytečné. • Zkontrolujte, zda jste jednu alternativu nepřiřadili dvěma různým osobám. V takovém případě byste museli znovu ověřit splnění požadavků – tedy porovnat informace v textech a alternativách.
