Making sense of words: The English Vocabulary Profile wordlists project Speaker: Liz Walter English Profile is a collaborative project that aims to create a ‘profile’ or set of Reference Level Descriptions for English linked to the Common European Framework (CEF). These will provide detailed information about the language that learners can be expected to demonstrate at each level, offering a clear benchmark for learner progress. This interactive talk will describe the aims and methods of the project, focusing particularly on the English Vocabulary Profile (EVP). It will explain the research that underpins the data, especially the use of the Cambridge Learner Corpus, and will demonstrate how the Profile, available online, provides a rich and easily accessible resource for teachers, material writers, developers of curricula, and other language teaching professionals. The talk will also describe future plans for English Profile, including the development of the English Profile Corpus. Founding partners of English Profile include Cambridge ESOL, Cambridge University Press, British Council, University of Bedfordshire and EnglishUK. 16:30-18:00 Using YouTube: Techniques for using online video in the classroom with a focus on the latest British Council teaching resources such as 2012 Olympics teaching materials Speaker: Nicola Crowley Online video clips such as those on YouTube offer a valuable resource in authentic video for English language learners – but how do we exploit them effectively in the classroom?
