Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the BIOTEC 2006 Organizing Committee I would like to welcome you to Gate2Biotech Conference. It is our privilege to hosting in Brno the first biotec exhibition and conference in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. The Czech Republic and Brno and Prague in particular represent an emerging biotec corridor. We appreciate the opportunity to introduce to the broad audience the leading Czech biotech projects, such as the Integrated Laboratories of Biomedical Technologies, called also as the “Brno Basic Sciences Factory”, International Clinical Research Center (ICRC) Brno, Animal Research Center Brno or the Central European Technology Institute (CETI). Close collaboration and logistic link between these institutions will create one of the largest clusters for biomedical and biotechnology research in the European Union. This cluster, will provide a platform capable to perform in one place cutting-edge research projects from the level of basic science trough preclinical and clinical research. International network of collaborating academic and industrial partners coordinated by the ICRC whose essential philosophy is “science without borders”, strong support in advanced materials and technologies development provided by CETI and more than 50.000 students studying at key universities in Brno are the other factors facilitating transformation of Brno to one of the leading European centers of science, technologies and education. Substantial expertise provided by CzechInvest enables move the Czech Republic from heavy industry and manufacturing to knowledge-base oriented economy. Although strong intellectual potential of the Czech Republic is generally well known and recognized, several steps have to be taken before the new biotec cluster in Brno will achieve the level of a worldclass facility. The Gate2Biotech conference provides a unique opportunity to compare and share ideas, knowledge and visions across the continents. We are delighted that leading specialists of well respected companies such as Ernst and Young, General Electric, IBM, Intel or Siemens will introduce their latest discoveries in biotec research at the conference. Such comparison is critical to understand the direction and quality level where the advanced biotec research is moving Thank you for coming to the Gate2Biotech conference and I wish you a pleasant stay in Brno Sincerely,
Tomas Kara, MD, PhD Member of the BIOTEC 2006 Organizing Committee
