ABSTRACT In transferring one language into another, translation is much needed to solve both lexical and grammatical problemsin languages. Lexical problems are related to the terms used in the text, and grammatical problems cover the problems related to a word in relation to other words. The grammatical problems in case of variable of phrasal verb is analyzed by knowing types and meaning of phrasal verb with the theory of shift and equivalence in translation in which each language also has its own language system which is different from one another besides cultural divergence. The aims of this research study are to know types of phrasal verbs using particles (out, up, over, in, into, back, down, and away) that occur in the novel, to analyze category shift of phrasal verbs and the strategies of equivalence applied intranslating novel of The Other Side of Midnight into Lewat Tengah Malam. The method used in analyzing the data is qualitative method in which the finding of phrasal verb variables are classified and analyzed collectively based on their types (using particles out, up, over, in, into, back, down, and away). The types which are based on the particle and transitivity are classified and listed structurally. The occurrance of shift and equivalence of the phrasal verb translation is written and analyzed structurally based on the theory of shift proposed by Catford and equivalence proposed by Larson. The method which is used in this study is library research in which the data source is based on the translation of the novel of The Other Side of Midnight into Lewat Tengah Malam. In analyzing the data about shift and translation equivalence, and the function as transitive and intransitive verbs, category shift which was founded are; structure shift, class shift, and unit shift that occurs as the change of grammatical class. In finding the textual equivalence, having the same and different concepts in both SL and TL are applied. The factors which influence the translator’s preference are context of situation and dynamics of language. The occurrence of shift becomes an important factor to know the occurrence of category shift. The different concepts of equivalence strategies are used to know what strategies are applied in translating the phrasal verbs.
Keywords : Phrasal verb, shift in translation, equivalence in translation
