An dere goden
Dit citaat uit de tragedie Trachinische vrouwen van Soph ocles1 is typerend voor de w ijze w aarop m ythen w orden verteld in de Griekse en Rom einse kunst en literatuur. Vaak gaat het om korte, raad selachtige verw ijzingen naar een detail uit een veel groter verhaal. De reden hiervoor is dat deze ver halen bij de Grieken en Rom einen algem een bekend waren. Zij w aren er van jongs a f aan m ee op gegroeid en zouden in deze ‘zoon van Z eus’ die uit Thebe kw am m et zijn knots dan ook direct Heracles hebben herkend en in ‘de Cyprische’ Aphrodite o f Venus, die na haar geboorte uit de zee aan land zou zijn gekom en op het eiland Cyprus en daar gedurende de hele oudheid belan g rijke cultusplaatsen had. De passage verw ijst naar een episode uit de verhalencyclus over de grote held Heracles (in het Latijn H ercules). Die episode vertelt, in kort bestek, hoe de held om zijn laatste echtgenote, Deianeira, m oest vechten m et een riviergod. Achter dergelijke verw ijzingen gaat een lange traditie van m ondelinge vertellingen schuil, w aarvan wij in de Griekse en Rom einse kunst en literatuur de w eerslag zien. Het w oo rd ‘m yth e’ is afgeleid van het Griekse w oo rd mythos. O orspronkelijk betekende dit w oord, bijvoorbeeld in de epen van H om erus, een ‘belan g rijke, publieke redevoering’ , zoals de speech van een koning o f de voordracht van een dichter. Het w as in dergelijke redevoeringen dat traditionele

vertellingen w erden aangehaald. Al snel w erden de verhalen zelf daarom ook ‘m ythen’ genoem d. Pas van af de vierde eeuw v.Chr., bij filosofen als Plato, kon het w oo rd mythos ook de pejoratieve betekenis van ‘een verzonnen verhaal’ krijgen. Dat kom t om dat, vanaf deze tijd, een groot deel van de intel lectuele elite niet m eer in de w erkelijkheid van deze verhalen geloofde. Voor de m eeste Grieken en R om einen m aakten de m ythen echter deel uit van hun historisch verleden en de goden w erden m ede daarom tot in de late oudheid in culten vereerd. Figuren als Heracles, die een onsterfelijke vader hadden en een sterfelijke m oeder (o f andersom ), w erden vereerd als heroës o f helden. Heracles, bij grote uitzondering, verkreeg zelfs verering als een god, zow el in de Griekse als de Rom einse w ereld. Over dergelijke goden en helden gaan de Griekse en R om einse mythen. Zij dragen in de Griekse en Latijnse teksten vaak verschillende nam en (afb. 3 .1 ), m aar het gaat in grote lijnen om dezelfde figuren.

Som m ige geleerden m aken een onderscheid tussen m ythen, sagen en legenden en sprookjes. Mythen zouden dan religieuze verhalen zijn over goden, terwijl sagen en legenden zouden berusten op h is torische feiten, en sprookjes zouden puur fictieve verhalen zijn. Deze indeling, die ontstaan is in de negentiende eeuw , zegt echter m eer over de geleerden die haar hebben gem aakt dan over de verhalen zelf. N eem het verhaal over Troje: aan vankelijk beschouw de m en dit als een ‘m yth e’ , w ant er kom en im m ers goden in voor. Toen Heinrich Schliem ann in 1871 een heuvel o p g ro e f in Turkije en deze identificeerde m et het Troje van H om erus, w erd het verhaal echter voor velen een sage o f legende, zonder dat er iets aan veranderde. Verder w ezen wij er hierboven al op dat er ook Grieken en Rom einen w aren die niet m eer ge loofden in deze verhalen en ze als pure fictie beschouw den. Het is daarom beter de O udgriekse term inologie aan te houden en al deze verhalen ‘m ythen’ te noem en. Men zou dan een m ythe kun nen definiëren als een traditioneel verhaal dat de Grieken en Rom einen vertelden over hun goden en helden in tekst en beeld. Het w oord ‘m yth e’ ligt ook aan de basis van het begrip ‘m y th ologie’. Dit w oo rd is een sam enstel ling van ‘m ythe’ (in de betekenis van traditioneel verhaal) en ‘lo g o s’ , dat is afgeleid van het Griekse w erkw oord voor spreken (Iegein). Het betekent dus letterlijk ‘spreken van o f over m yth en’. In het m oderne taalgebruik kan dit w oo rd zow el ver w ijzen naar de verzam eling van traditionele vertel lingen (bijvoorbeeld de Griekse o f Chinese m yth o logie) als naar de uitleg en w etenschappelijke b e studering van deze verhalen. In de volgende para grafen zullen wij beide aspecten van dit begrip nader onder de loep nem en.

Onze literaire bronnen voor de Griekse en R om ein se m ythologie strekken zich uit over een periode van m eer dan 1000 jaar, van de achtste eeuw v.Chr. tot de tw eede n.Chr. (afb. 3 .2 ), en zelfs n og daarna, als m en late epen als de Dionysiaca van N onnus (zie hoofdstuk 11) o f antiquarische rem i niscenties van Byzantijnse geleerden meerekent. De m eeste citaten in de literatuur nem en de vorm aan van korte verw ijzingen naar bepaalde episodes,

zoals het citaat uit Sophocles’ tragedie w aarm ee dit hoofdstuk begint, m aar som s vorm en de verhalen ook het plot van hele w erken, zoals in de epen van H om erus o f Vergilius (zie afb. 11.4 en 11.2). Het is belangrijk te w eten dat deze bronnen sterk van elkaar kunnen afwijken. Dichters konden m ythologische verhalen op geheel eigen w ijze ver tellen en dit w erd zelfs van hen verwacht. H om e rus vertelt ons bijvoorbeeld dat Aphrodite geboren w as als dochter van Zeus en Dione, m aar zijn tijd genoot H esiodus (ca. 700 v.Chr.) vertelt een heel ander verhaal, nam elijk dat zij geboren zou zijn uit de testikels van Uranus toen deze in de zee vielen nadat hij door Cronus w as gecastreerd. De reden voor dit verschil in het geboorteverhaal van Aphrodite is dat H om erus en H esiodus haar een verschillende rol toedichten: in de Ilias van H om e rus is zij bovenal een godin die verantw oordelijk is voor de liefde op het m enselijke niveau (bijvo or beeld Paris en H elena), m aar bij H esiodus is zij een kosm ische kracht, die goden, m ensen en d ie ren bestiert. Men heeft zich w el afgevraagd hoe een dergelijke discrepantie te rijm en is m et de ge loofw aardigheid van deze verhalen: hoe kan m en im m ers geloven in twee tegenstrijdige gebo orte verhalen van z o ’n belangrijke godin? Het ging bij de m eeste Grieken en Rom einen echter niet om de absolute, onveranderlijke w aarheid van deze verha len, m aar om een g e lo o f dat deze verhalen in w el ke vorm dan ook een belangrijke boodschap in zich droegen. Verder tw ijfelden m aar w einigen aan de w erkelijkheid van een godin als Aphrodite o f de historiciteit van figuren als Paris en Helena. H om erus neem t in zijn epen, die w aarschijnlijk rond de achtste eeuw v.Chr. zijn ontstaan, de mythe van de Trojaanse oorlog als zijn onderw erp. Hij doet dit op een w ijze die typerend is voor veel literaire bew erkingen van m ythen in de oudheid. In de Ilias behandelt hij een korte episode (51 dagen) in het tiende jaar van het beleg van Troje, m aar via flashbacks en vooruitw ijzingen en de structuur van zijn plot verw ijst hij continu naar de rest van de geschiedenis. Zo laat hij de Griekse hel den onderling ruzie m aken om een m eisje, Briseïs, net zoals zij in het grotere verband m et de T roja nen vechten om Helena. Dit kan hij doen om dat zijn oorspronkelijke publiek de grote lijnen van het verhaal al kende. Zij w aren niet zo zeer in het relaas zelf geïnteresseerd als in de vorm en de boodschap die dichters als H om erus aan dit traditi
onele them a zouden geven. In de Odyssee vertelt hij het verloop van de terugkeer van O dysseus na de innam e van Troje. Ook hier spelen op de achter gron d de (bij het antieke publiek) bekende verha len over de m oeizam e terugtochten van de andere Griekse helden, zoals koning A gam em non die, in tegenstelling tot O dysseus, bij zijn thuiskom st door zijn vrouw w ordt verm oord. Naast deze twee epen van H om erus w aren er ook andere, archaïsch Griekse epen die vertelden over de avonturen van Heracles en de oorlogen die voor de m uren van het oude Thebe w aren gevochten. H oew el H om eru s’ epen veel goddelijke en h ero ïsche figuren beschrijven en deze blijvend hebben getekend, is het zijn tijdgenoot H esiodus gew eest die in zijn Theogonie (De geboorte van de goden) een sys tem atische w eergave heeft gegeven van het ont staan van de w ereld, de verhouding tussen goden en m ensen en tussen de goden onderling. Dit w as niet de enige ontstaansgeschiedenis van de w ereld die de Grieken kenden — zo zijn er op naam van de m ythische dichter Orpheus andere ‘th eogon ieën ’ bew aard gebleven —, m aar de Theogonie van H esio dus w as w el de m eest invloedrijke. V olgens de Griekse geschiedschrijver H erodotus (vijfde eeuw v.Chr.) hadden H om erus en H esiodus aan de Grieken het beeld van hun goden gegeven .2 In de Theogonie vertelt H esiodus hoe zich eerst uit Chaos de Aarde (Gaia) en O nderw ereld (Tartarus) vo rm den en de goddelijke kracht Eros. Deze Chaos heeft niets te m aken m et ons begrip ‘ch aos’ , hoew el het later w el door antieke dichters, zoals O vidius, zo w erd geïnterpreteerd. Bij H esiodus is Chaos nog een bepaald gebied: het gapende gat tussen aarde en onderw ereld (ons w oo rd ‘gap en ’ is verw ant m et het Griekse w oo rd ‘ch aos’). Vandaar ook dat zich boven dit gat, als een soort korst, eerst de aar de vorm t en eronder de Tartarus. De aarde, v o or gesteld als de godin Gaia, brengt uit zichzelf de bergen, de zee en de hem el (U ranus) voort. Gaia slaapt m et U ranus en verw ekt m et hem de eerste generatie goden, de Titanen. Als U ranus na de coïtus w eigert van Gaia af te gaan, bezorgt zij een van haar zoons, Cronus, een sikkel, w aarm ee hij zijn vader castreert. U it zijn testikels, die in de zee vallen, w ordt volgens H esiodus de godin Aphrodite geboren (zie boven). Cronus w ordt de nieuw e koning van de goden en huw t zijn zuster Rhea, bij w ie hij de volgende generatie goden verwekt, de Olym piërs. Cronus vreest dat zij hem

hetzelfde zullen aandoen als hij zijn vader had aan gedaan en besluit daarom zijn kinderen op te eten zodra zij geboren zijn. Als Rhea bevalt van haar laatste kind, Zeus, besluit zij hem te verbergen op het eiland Kreta en geeft zij Cronus niet de baby, m aar een steen gew ikkeld in babykleertjes. Niets verm oedend slokt Cronus deze steen op. Als Zeus volw assen is, keert hij terug naar de hem el, ver slaat hij zijn vader en dw ingt hij hem zijn broers en zussen, die hij had opgegeten, w eer uit te bra ken. Op deze m anier is Zeus zow el de jongste als de oudste van de O lym piërs, om dat hij als laatstgeborene de w edergeboorte van zijn broers en zussen uit de m aag van hun vader heeft bew erkstelligd. De Titanen laten het er niet bij zitten en vallen Zeus aan, die zich verzekert van de steun van zijn broers en zussen door de m acht m et hen te delen: aan zijn broers Poseidon en Hades geeft hij, res pectievelijk, de m acht over de zee en de on derw e reld; zijn zuster H era huw t hij en m aakt hij godin van het huwelijk; Dem eter w ordt god in van de landbouw en Hestia de godin van het haardvuur, het m iddelpunt van ieder Grieks en R om eins huis. Sam en verslaan de Olym piërs de Titanen. Zeus m oet vervolgens n o g in een tw eegevecht het m o n ster Typhoeus verslaan en in een duel m et Prom e theus, die hem m et listen tracht te bedriegen, de plaats van de m ens tegenover de goden bepalen. H esiodus doet hierm ee een ordelijk verslag van het ontstaan van de w ereld en de verdeling van de m acht onder goden, m aar geeft tevens een blau w druk voor de w ijze w aarop een goede heerser zich behoort te gedragen: hij m oet sterk zijn (om vijan den als Typhoeus te verslaan), listig (om figuren als Prom etheus de baas te blijven), m aar ook bereid zijn om allianties aan te gaan en m acht te delen, zoals Zeus m et zijn broers en zussen doet. In het andere epos op zijn naam , de Werken en dagen, gaat H esiodus verder in op het Prom etheusverhaal. Zeus besluit goden en m ensen definitief te onderscheiden en hij vraagt aan Prom etheus, de zoon van een Titaan, om een rund te slachten en te verdelen. Prom etheus verstopt het m alse vlees in de m aag en ingew anden, terwijl hij de botten bedekt m et vet, zodat het lijkt dat zij het lekkerste deel van het dier vorm en. Zeus kiest de botten bedekt m et vet en de m ythe geeft daarm ee een ‘etio lo gie’ (uitleg van oorsprong) van het Griekse offerritueel. Zeus straft de m ensen voor het bedrog van Prom etheus door het graan in de aarde te

verstoppen, zodat zij voortaan landbouw m oeten bedrijven om aan hun voedsel te kom en, en hij haalt het vuur bij hen w eg. Prom etheus steelt ver volgens het vuur w eer uit de hem el en geeft het aan de m ensen terug, w aarop Zeus de m ensen verder straft door Pandora, de allereerste vrouw , in de vorm van een bruid te m aken. N u pas blijkt in H esiod u s’ verhaal dat de ‘m en sen ’ in de mythe alleen m annen w aren, een fout in de gedachtegang die Griekse en Rom einse schrijvers w el vaker maakten. De m ythe als geheel is veelzeggend voor de plaats die m ensen (m annen) volgens de oude Grieken in de kosm os innam en. H un positie w ordt bepaald, zow el tegenover de goden boven hen als tegenover de dieren onder hen, door godsdienst (m et nam e het offerritueel), de landbouw , het gebruik van vuur, en het m on ogam e huwelijk. In een ander verhaal in de Werken en dagen vertelt H esiodus over de v ijf verschillende tijdperken van de m ensheid en stelt hij de heroïsche tijd, de tijd van de helden die vochten voor Thebe en Troje, voor als een tijdperk dat definitief is afgesloten. H om erus suggereert hetzelfde, m aar is m inder expliciet. De heroïsche tijd w as een tijd w aarin de goden nog regelm atig op de aarde kw am en en, bijvoorbeeld, kinderen verw ekten bij de m ensen. Deze tijd, die voor de Grieken en R om einen zow el historisch als m ythisch w as, w as bepalend voor hoe de w ereld er nu uitziet, m aar is tevens vo or goed voorbij. De Griekse lyrische dichters, zoals Sappho en Pindarus (zie hoofdstuk 11), hielden ervan naar figuren uit de heroïsche tijd te verw ijzen ter verge lijking m et de lyrische ik-persoon o f m et de m en sen die zij prezen in hun poëzie. Zij aarzelden daarbij niet een vaak heel eigen draai aan de verha len te geven. Sappho (zesde eeuw v.C hr.), b ijvoor beeld, illustreert haar stelling dat het allerm ooiste op aarde datgene is w at m en liefheeft, m et het voorbeeld van Helena, die ‘haar voortreffelijk m an [M enelaüs] verliet en, al varend, naar Troje ging en zich helem aal niet haar kind [H erm ione] noch haar dierbare ouders herinnerde.’3 De schaking van Helena door Paris w ordt hier voorgesteld als de bew uste keuze van een verliefde vrouw . Een volgende serie teksten die de Griekse m yth ologie als onderw erp nem en, is de tragedie. Alle bew aard gebleven tragedies (m et uitzondering van de Perzen van Aeschylus) hebben een m ythisch verhaal als plot. Daarbij kunnen zij opnieuw sterk

van elkaar verschillen. Het is, bijvoorbeeld, interes sant de Plengofferdragers van Aeschylus, de Electra van Sophocles, en de Electra en de Orestes van Euripides naast elkaar te leggen. Alle vier vertellen het ver haal van de m oord op Clytaemnestra, de vrouw van A gam em non, door haar eigen zoon Orestes, m aar alle vier (ook de twee stukken van de hand van Euripides!) voegen andere karakters toe, geven verschillende m otivaties en daarm ee andere beteke nissen aan de mythe. De lotgevallen van het huis van A gam em non vorm en überhaupt een dankbaar onderw erp voor de tragici. Een andere fam ilie die prom inent aanw ezig is in de Griekse tragedie, is die van O edipus. Liefst drie van de zeven volledig overgeleverde tragedies van Sophocles zijn aan de lotgevallen van O edipus en zijn fam ilie gew ijd. In zijn tragedie Koning Oedipus, die gedateerd w ordt rond 430 v.Chr., kom t O edi pus er langzaam achter dat hij koning van Thebe is gew orden, nadat hij per ongeluk zijn vader had ged ood en zijn m oeder had gehuw d. Verschillende orakels hadden hem en zijn ouders hiervoor al ge w aarschuw d, m aar zij hadden allemaal gehoopt het noodlot te kunnen ontlopen. O edipus heeft on der tussen bij zijn eigen m oeder vier kinderen verwekt: twee m eisjes, Antigone en Ism ene, en twee jo n gens, Eteocles en Polynices. In de Oedipus in Colonus, die postuum is opgevoerd na de dood van Sop h o cles in 4 0 6 v.Chr., w ordt verteld hoe O edipus na de ontdekking van zijn gruw eldaden in balling schap gaat en een rustplaats vindt in het Attische dorpje Colonus (Grieks: K olonos (zie afb. 8 .1 ); tevens de geboorteplaats van Sophocles!), m aar niet dan nadat hij zijn twee zonen, die gew eigerd h ad den hem te helpen, vervloekt heeft. In de strijd om het koningschap van Thebe doodden zij elkaar. De nieuw e koning van Thebe, Creon, besloot vervol gens Eteocles, die gesneuveld w as terwijl hij de stad verdedigde, w el te begraven, m aar zijn broer Polynices, die de stad aanviel, niet. De tragedie Antigone van Sophocles (ca. 440 v.Chr.) verhaalt hoe Antigone de pogin gen om het lichaam van haar broer Polynices toch te begraven, m et de d ood m oet bekopen. Het verhaal van de strijd tussen Eteocles en Polynices vorm t ook de basis van de tragedies Zeven tegen Thebe van Aeschylus en de Fenicische vrouwen van Euripides. Euripides verbond in zijn tragedie de verhalen rond het huis van O edipus bovendien m et de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de stad Thebe.
Volgens de overlevering w as Thebe gesticht door de Fenicische prins C adm us, die door zijn ouders op een hopeloze zoektocht w as gestuurd om zijn zuster Europa, die door Zeus in de gedaante van een stier w as ontvoerd naar Kreta, te vinden. Een orakel voerde hem naar de plaats w aar hij een stad m oest stichten, m aar deze plaats w erd bewaakt door een draak. Cadm us doodde het m onster, zaai de zijn tanden (nog steeds in navolging van de orakelspreuk) en uit de aarde sprongen gew apende m annen op die elkaar m eteen te lijf gingen. Een zestal b leef over en zij vorm den sam en met C adm us de eerste bew oners van de stad. De vader van O edipus, Laius, zou volgens Euripides een directe afstam m eling zijn van Cadm us en het koor van Fenicische m eisjes w ijst erop dat de broeder m o ord van Eteocles en Polynices een parallel vindt in de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de stad. Daarbij valt op dat in deze en andere tragedies het leven van de individuele helden, net als bij de lyrische dichters, als voorbeeld w ordt gesteld voor het leven van m ensen en dat zij hierm ee m eer als m enselijk dan als goddelijk w orden voorgesteld. Met nam e in de tragedies van Euripides is dit het geval, m aar ook in de Koning Oedipus van Sophocles kan het koor zingen: ‘m et jou w lot als voorbeeld, ongelukkige O edipus, kan ik niem and van de ster velingen gelukkig p rijze n .’4 N a de tragedie m oeten w e w achten tot de helle nistische periode (32 3 -3 1 v.Chr.) voordat w e w eer een substantiële verzam eling literatuur vinden die de Griekse m yth ologie als onderw erp neem t. A pol lonius van Rhodos (derde eeuw v.Chr.) is de eerste dichter van w ie een u itgebreid verslag van de avonturen van de Griekse held Jason en de A rgo nauten bew aard is gebleven, vanaf het m om en t dat Jason en zijn m annen op w eg gaan naar Colchis aan de Zwarte Zee om het gouden vlies te halen tot hun terugkeer in Griekenland. Het vervolg van het verhaal, w aarin Jason de Colchische prinses M edea bedriegt en zij uit wraak hun kinderen ver m oordt, vertelt A pollonius niet, m aar valt te lezen in de Medea van Euripides o f Seneca. Callim achus van Cyrene, een tijdgenoot van A pollonius, schreef verschillende hym nen, w aarin hij de verhalen van de goden, vaak op geheel eigen w ijze, hervertelde, en een bijzonder w erk, de Aetia (Oorsprongen) genaam d, w aarin hij de m ythische oorsprong van vaak obscure rituelen o f nam en van m aanden en festivals toelichtte in verschillende korte gedichten.

De interesse in de m ythologische verhalen blijft dus, ook bij deze dichters, onveranderd groot, m aar m en proeft w el een verschil m et de archa ische en klassieke dichters. Deze laatsten konden er nog van uitgaan dat hun publiek een sterk g e lo o f had in de relevantie van deze verhalen voor hun eigen leven. Bij de hellenistische dichters, die voor een sceptischer publiek schreven, m eer en m eer beïnvloed door de Griekse filosofie, lag dit anders en m en ziet dan ook dat zij het exotische en fan tastische in de m ythologische verhalen benadruk ken, vaak ten koste van hun geloofw aardigheid. H ellenistische dichters als A pollonius en Callim achus hadden een grote invloed op de R om einse dichters Vergilius en O vidius (zie h oo fd stuk 11). In zijn Aeneïs bewerkte Vergilius oude verhalen, die vertelden hoe Griekse en Trojaanse overlevenden na de Trojaanse oorlog een veilig heenkom en vonden in Italië, tot een ‘nationaal e p o s’ , w aarin hij de glorie van R om e en de fam ilie van keizer A ugustus herleidde tot de figuur van Aeneas, een Trojaanse prins die na de val van Troje van Jupiter de opdracht zou hebben gekregen om de grondslag voor een nieuw e stad en w ereldrijk te leggen in Midden-Italië. O vidius reeg in zijn Metamorfosen op vaak subtiele w ijze een groot aantal m ythen aaneen, die eindigen in de ‘m e tam orfose’ (verandering) van een van de protagonisten, b ij voorbeeld de b o sn im f Daphne die door Apollo w ordt achtervolgd en in een laurierboom veran dert. Dit w erk w as lange tijd de belangrijkste bron voor de kennis van de Griekse en Rom einse m ythologie in W est-Europa. Geen literair w erk, op de Bijbel na, heeft zoveel invloed uitgeoefend op de W est-Europese kunst en literatuur als de Metamorfosen van O vidius (zie ook hoofdstuk 25). De R om einse geschiedschrijver Livius (ca. 59 v.Chr. - 17 n.Chr.) is onze belangrijkste bron voor de oude m ythen en historische verhalen van Rom e. Hij rationaliseerde deze verhalen echter om hun ‘w erkelijk’ historische w aarde te laten zien, en igs zins in overeenstem m ing m et de opvattingen van de Griekse geleerde Euhem erus (zie ook p aragraaf 8). Zo vertelt hij dat R om ulus en R em us, de stich ters van Rom e, waarschijnlijk niet door een w olvin w aren gezo ogd als b ab y ’s, m aar door een prostitu ee, die in het Latijn som s ‘w olvin ’ (lupa) w erd genoem d, en dat R om ulus, die op het einde van zijn leven plotseling in een grote m ist verdw een terwijl hij het volk toesprak, niet ten hem el w as

gestegen, zoals de mythe vertelde, m aar door vijandige senatoren aan stukjes w as gesneden en onder hun to g a’s w eggesm okkeld. De tw ijfel bij een deel van de Rom einse elite over de w aar achtigheid van deze verhalen spreekt hieruit. V anaf de tw eede eeuw n.Chr. zien w e in de Griekse en R om einse literatuur een tendens om u it treksels en verzam elingen te m aken van inform atie die een belezen persoon zou m oeten kennen. W ellicht om dat opvoeding aan de hand van m ythologische verhalen in de elite niet m eer van zelfsprekend w as, vinden w e ook verschillende handboeken die de klassieke m ythologie op een handige m anier ordenden en sam envatten. Z o ’n handboek in het Latijn is de Fabulae. Het staat op naam van Gaius Julius H yginus, een vrijgelatene van keizer A ugustus, m aar is in w erkelijkheid jo n ger. Het vertelt, vaak in zeer kort bestek, 300 ver schillende mythen. Een vergelijkbaar w erk in het Grieks is de Bibliothêkê, een m ythologisch handboek op naam van A pollodorus van Athene (tw eede eeuw v.Chr.), m aar eveneens van veel latere datum . Het vorm t de basis van de m eeste her vertellingen van Griekse m ythen in de m oderne tijd, zoals de Griekse mythen en sagen van de Duitse predikant Gustav Schwab uit de vroege negentiende eeuw , dat in vele talen is verschenen en vaak herdrukt.

VERBEELDING
De antropom orfe visie van de Grieken vroeg om afbeeldingen van goden en helden die direct aan sloten bij het m ensbeeld. Goden zien er uit als m ensen m aar zijn eventueel voorzien van speciale attributen. Ze kunnen, w anneer ze naast o f m et m ensen w orden uitgebeeld, groter zijn. Een m ooi voorbeeld daarvan is de godenverzam eling op het oostfries van het Parthenon (4 3 7 -4 3 2 v.Chr.) in Athene: de hoofden van de zittende goden zijn op hetzelfde niveau als die van de staande m ensen om hen heen (afb. 3 .3 ). In de loop van de tijd w erd dit form aat eveneens gangbaar voor de uitbeelding van vergoddelijkte personen zoals de hellenistische vorsten en de R om einse keizers. De verbeelding van m ythen in de kunst begint pas in de loop van de achtste eeuw v.Chr., terwijl er al figuratieve voorstellingen van goden uit het tw eede m illennium v.Chr. bekend zijn. v.Chr.) beeldden generieke scènes af, m eestal gere lateerd aan oorlog o f d ood die door de toevoeging van details een eigen specifieke betekenis kregen. V oorstellingen van een schipbreuk o f het aan boord gaan van een vrouw onder begeleiding van een m an zijn zeer schem atisch, m aar lijken verbon den te kunnen w orden m et respectievelijk de ver schillende door Odysseus geleden schipbreuken en een van de talloze ontvoeringsscènes van vrouw en (zoals H elena en Paris, Ariadne en Theseus, M edea en Jason , afb. 3.4). Deze voorstellingen w erden in dezelfde tijd gem aakt w aarin ook de hom erische epen w erden gecom poneerd. Beide groepen, vaasschilders en dichters, putten uit een en hetzelfde verhalengoed. Op het over het gehele M iddellandse Zeegebied verspreide Korinthische aardewerk deden m ythen hun intrede in de loop van de zevende eeuw v.Chr. De scènes dragen som s nam en die de fïgu-
ren identificeren (afb. 3 .5 ). Er ontstond een ge m eenschappelijke beeldtaal, w aarin de personages door kleding en attributen gekenm erkt w erden. In som m ige gevallen kregen de goden ook vaste d ie ren als begeleiders; deze w erden te pas en te onpas afgebeeld. Alle m annelijke goden w aren aanvanke lijk w eergegeven als rijpe personen, m et baard en stok ten teken van hun elitaire status. In de loop van de vijfde eeuw v.Chr. w erd er langzaam m aar zeker onderscheid gem aakt tussen ‘vaderfigu ren’ (Zeus, Poseidon, H ades) en de jongere generatie (H erm es, Apollo, D ionysus). Voor de vrouw en w as de tegenstelling m inder evident, om dat de leeftijd niet in de gezichten o f lichaam svorm en kon w or den vastgelegd en vrouw en altijd in het lichaam verhullende kleding w erden getoond. Pas in de late vijfde eeuw v.Chr. kreeg Aphrodite de naam van de schoonste der godinnen en verhulde haar kleding steeds m inder van haar lichaam. Haar

naaktheid, vanaf ongeveer 360 v.Chr., w as hiervan het logische gevolg (afb. 3 .6). De w ijze w aarop m ythische verhalen in de beel dende kunst w erden w eergegeven, veranderde in de loop der eeuw en. De oudste voorstellingen uit de archaïsche periode op vazen en reliëfs w erden gekenm erkt door actie en, als er gew eld aan te pas kw am , expliciete w eergave van verw ondingen en d ood (afb. 3.7). De toeschouw er w as getuige van de heroïsche strijd tussen god o f held en de slechte tegenstander. Verhalen m et m onsters prevaleerden. In som m ige gevallen w erden binnen één scène verschillende vertelm om enten gecom bineerd. Als O dysseus en zijn m akkers het oog van Polyphem us uitsteken, zit de reus n og m et een drinkbeker en som s zelfs m et een been van een van zijn slacht offers in zijn handen. Op de gevel van de tem pel voor Artemis op Corfu doodt Perseus M edusa, een van de m onsterlijke G orgonen, m aar zien w e haar tegelijkertijd naar rechts vluchten, terw ijl ze geflan keerd w ordt door haar na haar d ood uit de hals geboren kinderen Chrysaör en Pegasus (afb. 3 .8 ). Deze sim ultane vertelw ijze keerde in de tijd van keizer A ugustus in een vergelijkbare vorm op R om einse w andschilderingen terug: nu konden binnen één venster de h oofdfiguren tw ee o f drie

keer afgebeeld w orden, terwijl ze opeenvolgende handelingen verrichten (afb. 3 .9 ). Pure oorlogsellende tonen scènes uit de archa ïsche tijd die m et de Trojaanse oorlog te m aken hebben. Een indrukw ekkende grafam foor van het eiland M ykonos bij Delos uit ca. 670 v.Chr. heeft op de hals in reliëf het paard zelf, vol m et krijgers, en op de buik friezen m et daarin vrouw en (al dan niet met kinderen) die zonder pardon w orden d oorb oord o f onthoofd door Griekse krijgers (afb. 3 .1 0 ). Ook in de vaasschilderkunst en andere m edia zijn gew elddadige scènes veelvuldig aanw e zig. Klaarblijkelijk m oesten de gruw elen van de m ythologische strijd breed w orden uitgem eten, m aar wellicht is er ook een verband m et de h o o fd bezigheid van de elite van die tijd, het oo rlo gvoe ren. De m otieven zijn dan een neerslag van hun interesse. In de onzekere w ereld van de archaïsche tijd spreekt verder het idee aan van het ordenen van de w ereld en elim ineren van w anorde. H era cles en de andere helden verbeterden de leefom ge ving door m onsters te doden. In de loop van de zesde eeuw v.Chr. w erden verhalen m inder gepassioneerd w eergegeven. o f op het einde van een avontuur. Cyclische vo or stellingen, m et opeenvolgende episodes van een en dezelfde m ythe, kw am en niet veel m eer voor. Het aantal onderw erpen steeg, wat m et de literaire evo caties van m ythen overeen lijkt te kom en. Om dat ons beeldm ateriaal vooral van Attisch aardewerk stam t, is de repertoirekeuze in andere delen van Griekenland m inder goed bekend. Op latere R om einse sarcofagen keren de gruw eldaden die w e op archaïsch Griekse vazen aantroffen, w eer terug (afb. 3 .1 1 ). Hier lijken ze als troost van de nabe staanden te hebben gediend: uw dierbare heeft een zo gruw elijk lot niet hoeven doorstaan.

HEILIGE GEBOU W EN
Tem pels w aren van oudsher dragers van b o o d schappen en ook in hun aankleding w as dat het geval. Gevelvelden, m etopen in Dorische friezen, doorlopende friezen van de Ionische orde, som s zelfs zuilen konden versierd zijn m et reliëfsculptuur (zie ook hoofdstuk 19 en 2 1 ). De them atiek heeft niet altijd direct betrekking op de godheid die ver eerd werd. A lgem ene w aarden als de m acht van de goden over natuur en m ens prevaleren, b ijvoor beeld in het genoem de gevelveld van Corfu (zie afb. 3 .8 ). Hier zien w e m eteen een ander voor de vroegste tem pels kenm erkend aspect, het naast elkaar plaatsen van m eer episodes van een mythe binnen één gevelveld. M edusa w ordt geflankeerd door grote panters, zelf sym bolen van de groo ts

heid der natuur. In de linkerhoek van het gevelveld w ordt Priamus door A chilles’ zoon N eoptolem us gedood, in de rechterhoek bestrijdt Zeus m et zijn bliksem een Titaan o f een Gigant. De band m et de ‘bew o n er’/'b e w o o n ste r’ van de tem pel nam in de loop van de tijd toe, zodat bij de klassieke tem pels thematiek nauw o f via associatie aan de godh eid w erd gerelateerd: de tem pel van Athena Aphaia op het eiland Aegina, het Parthenon in Athene en de tem pel van Zeus te O lym pia zijn voorbeelden daar van. In het sculpturale ensem ble van het Parthenon speelde Athena steeds de h oofdrol o f is zij nauw verbonden m et de andere figuren die staan afgebeeld op haar tem pel. Athena’s geboorte en haar w edkam p m et Poseidon om de heerschappij over Attica dom ineerden de oostelijke en w estelijke tim panen. M ythische gevechten, een centaurom achie (de strijd tussen Lapithen en Centauren), een gigantom achie (Goden tegen G iganten), een am azonom achie (Grieken tegen Am azones) en scènes uit de Trojaanse oorlog, sierden de m eto pen van de D orische friezen (afb. 3.12 en 3 .1 3 ). Deze confrontaties w aren sinds de strijd tegen de Perzen ook in andere heiligdom m en in de Griekse w ereld uiterm ate populair. Ze staan sym bool voor de overw inning van Grieken op vreem delingen, in Athene specifiek van de Atheners. De keuze voor Centauren, Am azones, Giganten en de Trojanen m aakten van de Perzen halve m onsters (Centauren, Giganten) o f barbaren zonder beschaving (Am a zones, Trojanen) en stelde de Grieken in een posi-

tief licht. D oor de conflicten als m oeilijk en b lo e derig voor te stellen, verheerlijkten de Griekse beeldhouw ers hun superioriteitsgevoel en lieten zij zien dat de Grieken voor hun vrijheid een hoge prijs betaald hadden. De actualiteit van deze thematiek nam a f naar m ate de tijd verstreek. Toch bleven dezelfde on der w erpen geliefd, m ogelijk om dat de historische con flicten op een hoger, algem ener niveau w erden geïnterpreteerd en het Griekse gevoel van su p erio riteit steeds w eer diende te w orden onderstreept. Bijzonder w as de keuze voor deze them a’s door de Perzische satraap M ausolus in H alicarnassus rond 350 v.Chr.: op zijn m ausoleum is volgens de lite raire traditie door vier Griekse kunstenaars een am azonom achie in friesvorm uitgebeeld. O f hij zich m et deze keuze in de Griekse invloedssfeer heeft w illen plaatsen, zelfs tegen zijn eigen superi euren, de Perzen, in, is niet duidelijk. In het m id den van de tweede eeuw v.Chr. kozen de koningen van Pergam um voor een uitgebreide w eergave van een gigantom achie op het m onum entale altaar dat op de akropolis van de stad w erd opgericht en w aarschijnlijk aan Zeus gew ijd was. N u w erden m et de tegenstander Galaten (Keltische stam m en in N oordw est-Turkije) bedoeld m et w ie sinds een eeuw regelm atig conflicten w erden uitgevochten. Zo konden de oude, m ythische tegenstanders tel kens sym bool staan voor nieuw e vijanden. Op het Italisch schiereiland w erd aanvankelijk niet op een zo om vangrijke schaal aan decoraties in steen gedaan. In de archaïsche tijd w aren terracotta
versieringen van m et nam e tem peldaken gebruike lijk, en ook hier w erd gekozen voor uitbeeldingen van de elim inatie van m onsters (bijvoorbeeld Perseus en M edusa en de am azonom achie in Satri cum , kort na 500 v.C hr.), o f voor een m on u m en tale w eergave van goden, zoals Apollo in Veii, Heracles en Minerva op een van de tem pels bij de kerk van Sant’O m obono te Rom e, uit de late zesde eeuw v.Chr. (zie afb. 6 .6 ). Zulke voorstellingen stonden voor de m achtsontplooiing van lokale gezagsdragers. Ook w andschilderingen en gekleur de terracotta platen m oeten mythen hebben bevat. In Etruskische graftom bes kw am en m ythen v o or al op reliëfs van askisten voor. De laatste hiervan dateren uit de derde en tw eede eeuw v.Chr. Het aantal m otieven is beperkt en vertoont een frap pante overeenkom st m et onderw erpen die in de Griekse tragedies w orden behandeld, zoals de o o r log van de Zeven tegen Thebe o f de verw ikkelingen van A gam em non en zijn fam ilie. Behalve deze eigen producten bevatten Etruskische graven, vo or al in de late zesde en vijfde eeuw v.Chr., Griekse vazen o f im itaties daarvan m et puur Griekse m ythen. Op verschillende plaatsen in dit boek w ordt gew ezen op de inzet van m ythen in de politiek. R om e leverde hiervoor een goed voorbeeld in de late republiek en de vroege keizertijd. Het broederconflict tussen R om ulus en Rem us om de macht over het vroege R om e w erd uitgevonden om de strijd tussen patriciërs en plebejers in de vijfde en vierde eeuw v.Chr. te verklaren. politiek-sociale groepen, die ver van elkaar afston den, had zo zijn eigen (h alf)goddelijke voorvader en voor de plebejers betekende dit een verm eerde ring van hun tot dan toe laag gew aardeerde presti ge. Rom ulus kreeg een goddelijke status: hij w as m ogelijk op het forum ten hem el gestegen o f op de heuvel het Quirinaal begraven, m et steeds het zelfde gevolg, nam elijk dat hij als de god Quirinus in het pantheon w erd opgenom en (zie ook boven). Veldheren en politici fundeerden hun m achtsaan spraken op fictieve stam bom en die op goden o f helden teruggingen. R om e kreeg zijn glorieuze oorsprong door Aeneas en zijn tot Julus o m g e d oopte zoon Ascanius op een voetstuk te plaatsen in geschriften en in kunstuitingen (afb. 3 .1 4 ). Onder Augustus is deze m ythologie zo belangrijk gew orden dat verscheidene auteurs Griekse ver halen in R om einse vorm hebben herverteld en verbonden m et de grootsheid van R om e, zoals Vergilius in zijn Aeneïs. Om dat de belangrijkste the m a ’s in de beeldende kunst en in de num ism atiek een onontkoom baar m o tie f w erden, is w el gesp ro ken van bew uste propagan da voor de regering van de eerste princeps, A ugustus. Zijn Forum A ugustum

w as daarvan de sterkste uitdrukking. Alle on der delen stonden in het teken van de glorieuze o o r sprong van Rom e en de m onum entalisering daar van door de keizer. In de latere keizertijd bleven m ythen o f m ythische personen deel uit m aken van de keizerlijke beeldtaal, m aar de nadruk daarop w as m inder sterk dan ten tijde van A ugustus. In de privésfeer w aren m ythische afbeeldingen vaak niet m eer dan fraaie versieringen. De politiek lijkt in deze am biance niet op zijn plaats. In de vroege keizertijd w as er een enorm e productie van geschilderde voorstellingen van m ythen, zoals de huizen van H erculaneum en Pom peii laten zien. In de m ozaïekkunst bleven ze tot in de vroegch riste lijke tijd deel uitm aken van de aankleding van hu i zen, paleizen en villa’s. Het m ythische verhalengoed had ook hier geen zware sym bolische, religi euze o f politieke w aarde, m aar diende uitsluitend tot vermaak. Dit hangt w ellicht sam en m et de geringe werkelijkheidsw aarde die de elite aan deze verhalen hechtte, een notie die ook buiten elitaire kringen ingang vond. De voorstellingen lijken bedoeld om gesprekken uit te lokken tijdens m aal tijden en dus als conversation pieces dienst te doen. Ze kom en in de gehele antieke w ereld voor, van N oordw est-Europa tot in N oord-A frika en van Spanje tot aan de oosterse grenzen van het rijk in Turkije en Syrië (afb. 3 .1 5 ).

TOPOGRAFIE VAN GO DEN EN HELDEN
Mythen hadden, zoals al duidelijk is gew orden, zow el in Griekenland als R om e de functie om h is torische verschijnselen te verklaren o f aan fam ilies een ‘o u d e ’ stam boom m et m eer prestige te geven. Steden bedachten stichtingsgeschiedenissen, w aarin beroem de helden de leiding hadden. In een leef w ereld waar de stichting van nieuw e nederzettin gen geen zeldzaam heid w as, konden m ythen goed als historiserende leidraad dienst doen, en on der deel vorm en van de collectieve herinnering. Bew oners van een stad o f een land vereenzelvigden zich m et hun m ythische stichter (ktistês) en plaats ten die oude afstam m ing op de voorgron d om aan hun stad prestige te verlenen. Dit is het geval m et Milete (zie hoofdstuk 4) en R om e (zie hoofdstuk 6 ), m aar w erd ook toegepast in een hellenistische stad als Pergam um . De koningen (o f geleerden in hun opdracht) vonden een stichter uit, Telephus,

de zoon van Heracles en Auge, en lieten zijn avon turen groots afbeelden op een fries op het Grote Altaar m idden in de stad (afb. 3.1 6 ). Mythen w aren dus vaak m et een stad o f streek verbonden. Aan de hand van antieke bronnen is het m ogelijk een goden- en heldentopografie op te stellen. Van som m ige belangrijke plaatsen in de godenw ereld w orden daarin gegevens verschaft die een beeld geven van de ‘b io to o p ’ van de goden. De O lym pus, de hoogste berg van Griekenland, gelegen op de grens tussen Thessalië en M ace donië, w as de residentie van de ‘O lym pische’ goden. Deze vooral m et de bovenw ereld en het uitspansel geassocieerde goden w oonden daar in een groot paleis en keken neer op de w ereld om hen heen. Onder de aarde en in de wateren w as het niet m inder druk. Poseidon bestierde de zee, rijk gevuld m et nim fen en lagere zeegoden. H ades leefde m et zijn echtgenote Persephone diep onder de aarde en heerste over het rijk van de onzichtba re schim m en (zijn naam w erd in de oudheid u it gelegd als ‘de onzichtbare’). Waar de ingang tot de Hades w as, stond niet vast, m aar er w erden ver schillende kloven en vulkanen als m ogelijke toe gangspoorten genoem d. De g od van het vuur, H ephaestus, w erd in verschillende verhalen onder vulkanen gesitueerd, m et nam e de Etna op Sicilië: die spuw den rook en vuur van zijn sm idse uit, w aar de Cyclopen als personeel w erkzaam waren. Zo kunnen w e groepen goden verbinden m et dom einen in de natuur. Lagere goden zijn de talrij
ke soorten nim fen en saters die de natuur op aarde bevolkten en som s m et de hogere goden in relatie stonden. Zij vorm en een trait d’union tussen de h ogere m achten, die zich na de heroïsche tijd nog zelden op de aarde vertoonden, en de m ensen. De w oo n om gevin g en de actieradius van de hel den w aren uiteraard beperkter. Heracles verrichtte de helft van zijn tw aalf daden in plaatsen op de Peloponnesus. N em ea, Lerna en Stym phalus w erden door hem bevrijd van m onsters, respectievelijk een enorm e leeuw (wellicht een rem iniscentie aan een echte leeuw enpopulatie in Griekenland tot in het tw eede m illennium v.C hr.), een veelkoppige w ater slang, de Hydra (afb. 3 .1 7 ), en alles m et hun u it w erpselen bevuilende vogels. Een aan Artemis gew ijde hinde m oest hij levend vangen bij Cerynia, w at ook gold voor een reusachtig everzw ijn in Erymanthus. Niet ver van O lym pia regeerde Augias w iens stallen Heracles van de grote m assa’s m est ontdeed door een rivier door de ruim tes te leiden. Heracles gold daarom in de eerste plaats als regio nale held, m aar zijn w erken in andere delen van de w ereld garandeert dat hij een ‘panhelleense’ figu u r w erd, de m eest gem em oreerde en vaakst in de kunst vereeuw igde held. Hij bestreed de A m a zones in het gebied rond de Zwarte Zee, ving de vleesetende paarden van D iom edes in Thracië en m aakte op Kreta een dolle stier buit. De grenzen van het bestaan zocht hij op toen hij de runderen van het m onster Geryon in wat het verre w esten w erd genoem d naar Griekenland m oest drijven.

W aarschijnlijk gaat het om Cadiz, m aar er^is ook gedacht aan een eiland in de Atlantische Oceaan. In die eindeloze zee lag ook het eiland van de Hesperiden (dochters van H esperus, de A vondster), waar hij gouden appels van de goden m oest halen. Al deze opdrachten ( ‘w erken’) voerde hij uit op bevel van zijn n eef Eurystheus, koning van Tiryns o f Mycene. Heracles w ist zelfs de d ood te overw in nen: hij daalde a f in de Hades en nam Cerberus, de driekoppige hellehond, levend m ee om aan zijn plaaggeest Eurystheus te presenteren. Ook in de Rom einse w ereld drong zijn faam door en speelde hij vanaf de archaïsche tijd een belangrijke rol in de oergeschiedenis van R om e (zie p aragraaf 7). Een van de oudste m ythische kernthem a’s w as M inos en de w ereld van Kreta. Hij w as een zoon van Zeus en Europa, die door de op p ergod in de gedaante van een stier uit Fenicië naar Kreta was ontvoerd (zie boven). H oew el er over de religie en m ythologie van Kreta in het tw eede m illennium v.Chr. niet veel bekend is, lijkt het bestaan van een cultus w aarin stieren een rol speelden in deze h oge cultuur, zeker. A fbeeldingen van stierhorens op gebouw en en van stierengevechten w aarbij jongens en m eisjes salto’s over deze rennende beesten m aken, vallen bijzonder op (afb. 3 .1 8 ). Ook de Stier van Kreta, een m onster dat Poseidon had gestuurd naar koning M inos, is m et deze afbeeldin

gen verbonden. W ellicht betekende ‘M in o s’ (w iens naam aan de m inoïsche cultuur op Kreta is g e g e ven) in de Oudkretenzische taal ‘vo rst’. Volgens de m ythe w erd het beroem de labyrint gebouw d voor de M inotaurus, h alf m ens en h alf stier, een kind uit de onnatuurlijke verbintenis tussen M in os’ vrouw Pasiphaë en de Stier van Kreta. Gezien de doolhofachtige structuur van de paleizen op Kreta is deze naam geïnterpreteerd als om schrijving van de gebouw en die de koninklijke residentie en adm inistratieve centra herbergden. M inos zou later in de onderw ereld als rechter optreden. Via M in os’ dochter Ariadne w erd Kreta verbonden m et Athene. W egens een oude verplichting m oesten de Athe ners jaarlijks zeven jongens en zeven m eisjes als voedsel voor de M inotaurus leveren. Op z o ’n tocht w ist Theseus m et hulp van Ariadne het m onster te doden. Hij nam haar m ee, m aar liet haar vervol gens achter op het Cycladeneiland N axos (zie afb. 12 .1 ), w aar de god Dionysus haar vond en haar tot zijn bruid maakte. In Sparta, A rgos en Mycene speelden zich de d ram a’s rond de fam ilie van A gam em non af. De belangrijke rol die deze fam ilie in de Trojaanse oorlog speelde, zorgde ervoor dat hun verhalen in heel Griekenland w erden verteld. Thebe kende een vergelijkbare keten aan ellendeverhalen rond O edipus en zijn kinderen. Hier horen vertakkingen bij die zich afspelen in Argos en Korinthe. Athene bouw de een traditie op ron d koningen uit de oer tijd en vooral de reeds genoem de Theseus, voor w ie in de zesde eeuw v.Chr. een lokale biografie w erd ontw ikkeld die vergelijkbaar is m et het leven van Heracles, in clusief zw are w erken en lange zwerftochten. Zo doodde Theseus de door Heracles naar het vasteland gebrachte Stier van Kreta bij Marathon. De polis Athene claim de verder haar naam te danken te hebben aan een w edstrijd tussen Athena en Poseidon. De burgers (oorspronkelijk waarschijnlijk de koninklijke fam ilie) traden als scheidsrechter op en gunden Athena het patronage, ook al kreeg Poseidon, net als zij, een heiligdom op de Akropolis, zij het van geringere om vang. De lokale gebondenheid ging niet zover dat goden en helden slechts op één plek w erden ver eerd. Net als Heracles kregen de m eeste figuren ook elders een plaats van betekenis. De circulatie van verhalen door vertellers, in geschriften en in de vorm van afbeeldingen op gebruiksvoorw erpen, zorgde voor een snelle verbreiding van m ythen en

hun varianten in de m editerrane wereld. Dit im p li ceerde ook een intensieve uitw isseling m et Etrurië en Rom e w aar veel Griekse m ythische personages in aangepaste vorm voorkw am en.
verre buitenlanders te definiëren, m aar ook om hun superioriteit tegenover hun eigen vrouw en te benadrukken.

ETRURIË EN ROME
GRIEKSE IDENTITEIT
H oew el de goden voor iedereen hun goede werken verrichtten, waren zij voor de Grieken net wat beter dan voor de anderen. De barbaroi (letterlijk ‘brabbelaars’) stonden in de ogen van de Grieken m eestal een trapje lager in de sociale rangorde en dat betekende ook dat zij m inder o f in ieder geval anders van de goden gunsten kregen toebedeeld. Er zijn verschillende m ythen w aarin de Grieken im p li ciet o f expliciet boven anderen gesteld w orden. Deels is dat puur op basis van topografie g eb a seerd, som s w orden specifiek etnische details aan gevoerd. Dit geldt bijvoorbeeld voor enkele m ythische conflicten over m uzikale kwaliteiten. De sater M arsyas, die afkom stig w as uit Phrygië, een gebied in het h uidige Turkije, daagde Apollo uit in een m uziekw edstrijd: hij m eende m et zijn fluitspel te excelleren boven de klanken van de lier van de Griekse god van de m uziek. Deze overm oed (hybris) m oest hij m et een gruw elijke straf bekopen: hij w erd levend gevild. M idas, koning van Lydië in Klein-Azië, trad als scheidsrechter op in een verge lijkbare w edstrijd tussen Apollo en Pan en m oest zijn oordeel dat de laatste beter w as, bekopen m et ezelsoren. Ten slotte zijn er verschillende hevige conflicten bekend tussen Grieken en Am azones. Deze strijdlustige vrouw en w erden door de Grieken in verschillende streken gelokaliseerd: in KleinAzië, Libië, India en de Oekraïne. Waar zij echter ook w oonden, steeds delfden zij het onderspit. Door hun m oed en kracht w aren de vrouw en geduchte tegenstanders en m aakten zij de prestaties van de Griekse helden die na veel m oeite toch w onnen, alleen m aar hoger. Zij streden onder m eer aan de Trojaanse zijde m ee tegen de Grieken. Achilles zou daarbij op de koningin Penthesileia verliefd zijn gew orden op het m om ent dat hij haar de doodssteek toebracht. In een conflict met Athene bestorm den ze de Akropolis, w aar Theseus hen tot staan w ist te brengen. De verhalen over de conflicten m et de Am azones gaven Griekse m annen niet alleen de m ogelijkheid om zich tegenover de
O m dat de literaire en iconografische overlevering in het Italië van ongeveer 1000 tot 500 v.Chr. vrij w el nihil is, bestaat er veel m inder zekerheid over godsdienst en m yth ologie in R om e en Etrurië. De intensieve contacten m et het door Grieken gekolo niseerde M agna Graecia (Zuid-Italië) zorgden voor de im port van Griekse goden en helden, zoals onder m eer blijkt uit de overnam e van Griekse nam en voor personen in de Etruskische god en w ereld, bijvoorbeeld Aplu ( = Apollo) en Menerva ( = A thena/M inerva). Tegelijkertijd w erden lokale godheden, in iconografisch opzicht, van af de archaïsche tijd gelijkgesteld aan Griekse figuren. Zo gold Turan als equivalent van Aphrodite-Venus en U ni als pendant van H era-Juno in Etrurië. De Griekse Heracles w erd spoedig als Hercle geïnte greerd in dit pantheon en m et M enerva vorm de hij een paar gelukbrengende goden. In R om e zou hij het m onster Cacus (Grieks kakos = slecht) hebben verslagen aan de voet van de R om einse heuvel de Palatijn (zie ook hoofdstuk 6). Hij zou deze plaats hebben aangedaan op de terugw eg van zijn ro o f van de runderen van Geryon en daarbij tevens de plaatsen H erakleia (in Zuid-Italië en op Sicilië) en H erculaneum hebben gesticht. In R om e w aren goden aanvankelijk vooral ver bonden m et de natuur en m et landbouw en speel den m ythen daarbij w aarschijnlijk nauw elijks een rol van betekenis. Ops en Consus stonden voor de groei van het graan, Mars w as een aardgod en Jupiter beheerde het luchtruim . W ater w erd ver bonden m et vruchtbaarheidsgodinnen als Mater M atuta, de n im f Iuturna en Juno. Abstracte begrip pen konden aan een bestaande godh eid w orden verbonden, die daardoor een nevenfunctie als bescherm er van het verschijnsel in kw estie w erden (zie hoofdstuk 2 3 ). In R om e w em elt het van zulke personen, bijvoorbeeld Venus Cloacina, besch erm ster van de riolen, en Ju n o Sospita, de behoedster afkom stig uit Lanuvium ten zuidw esten van Rom e. D oor im pulsen uit Etrurië en uit Griekenland vergrieksten al deze goden steeds m eer en w erden ze gelijkgesteld aan hun Griekse partners, in clu sief de

daarbij behorende m ythische vertellingen. Om ze te verbinden m et de locatie w aar ze nu w erden vereerd, w aren m ythen over Grieken en Trojanen die na de Trojaanse oorlog naar het Italisch schier eiland zouden zijn geëm igreerd, zoals onder m eer verhaald door Vergilius, van groot belang. Heracles w erd op de Palatijn ontvangen door een uit Arcadië afkom stige Euander ( ‘Goede m a n ’) , die later ook Aeneas en Ascanius in zijn huis verw elkom de. In de schitterende passage die Vergilius in boek 8 van zijn Aeneïs aan de ontm oeting m et Aeneas heeft gew ijd, vindt de lezer een voorspelling van de grootsheid van R om e, dankzij de inzet van Aeneas en zijn opvolgers en m et de heerschappij van kei zer A ugustus als hoogtepunt.

ANTIEKE INTERPRETATIES
W e hebben hierboven gezien dat m ythen in de oudheid verschillende functies konden vervullen. Ze konden dienen als voorbeeld voor het m enselijk lot, ter rechtvaardiging van historische claim s, om de eigen identiteit uit te drukken o f voor politieke propaganda. Voor de m eeste Grieken en R om einen m oet dit vanzelfsprekend zijn gew eest. Toch on t stond al vroeg de behoefte om de m ythen ook inhoudelijk te verklaren. W aarschijnlijk hebben van af het allervroegste begin dichters en kunste naars die m ythen vertelden, zich ook m et de d u i ding van deze verhalen beziggehouden. De oudste persoon van w ie wij w eten dat hij een allegorische lezing van de m ythen voorstond, w as zelf een rapsode ( ‘p erform er’) die de hom erische gedichten voordroeg: Theagenes van R hegium (zesde eeuw v.Chr.). Hij bew eerde dat Hera voor de lucht stond, H ephaestus voor het vuur en Poseidon voor het w ater en dat, als de Ilias beschreef hoe de goden m et elkaar vochten, dit in w erkelijkheid een verslag w as van de kosm ische verm enging van deze verschillende elementen. Deze allegorische uitleg w as waarschijnlijk in ge geven door de kritiek die in T heagenes’ tijd ont stond in verlichte kringen van de elite over het gedrag van de goden in de epen van H om erus en H esiodus. Fam eus is de uitspraak van de vroegGriekse dichter-filosoof X enophanes, die bew eerde dat ‘H om erus en H esiodus in hun verhalen aan de goden alles toeschrijven w at schaam teloos en ver achtelijk is onder de m ensen: diefstal, overspel en

b e d ro g .’5 De gew one Griekse m an zat hier niet m ee. Hij w ist dat deze goden voor grote kosm ische m achten stonden, zoals liefde (A phrodite), m acht (Zeus) o f oorlog (Ares), die onredelijk en gem een konden zijn, zeker als zij niet door offers en ritue len w erden verzoend. Voor w ie een idealistischer godsbeeld nastreefde, w as dit echter w el een probleem . Eén m anier om zijn bezw aar w eg te nem en, w as te zeggen dat deze verhalen niet w er kelijk over strijd o f ruzie tussen de goden gingen, m aar dat deze strijd slechts sym bool stond voor iets anders. Vergelijkbare allegorische lezingen van Griekse en R om einse m ythen bleven, m et nam e onder filosofen, gedurende de hele oudheid p o p u lair en zij zijn, in zekere zin, n og steeds typerend voor veel m oderne m ytheverklaringen, zoals w e hieronder zullen zien. De tw eede antieke verklaring van Griekse m ythen kw am eveneens uit filosofische hoek en w el van een m an die op het einde van de vierde eeuw v.Chr. w erkzaam w as aan het h o f van de M acedonische koning. Zijn naam w as Euhem erus (zie ook p aragraaf 2). Hij bew eerde dat figuren als Heracles, m aar zelfs goden als Zeus o f Athena, aan vankelijk historische figuren w aren en m achtige krijgers o f opvallende personen in hun eigen tijd. N a hun d ood ontstonden verhalen over hen en deze w erden steeds fantastischer, zozeer zelfs dat m en aan deze gew eldenaren uit het verleden aller lei bijzondere krachten ging toeschrijven. Euhem e rus verklaarde op deze m anier dus niet alleen de betekenis van de Griekse m ythologie, m aar tevens het ontstaan van godsdienst. Ook deze historiserende uitleg van m ythen, die naar zijn ontdekker ook w el ‘eu hem erism e’ w ordt genoem d, vindt vandaag de dag navolging. W e hebben hierboven al gew ezen op m oderne geleer den die som m ige Griekse m ythen willen classifice ren als sagen o f legenden m et een historische kern. Som s is deze uitleg w el te verdedigen. Zo heeft m en in de m ythe over Theseus en de M inotaurus de w eerslag gezien van een historisch conflict tus sen de zeem acht Kreta en Athene in de M yceense tijd. En de verhalen over Jaso n en de A rgonauten die het gouden vlies gaan zoeken in het gebied rond de Zwarte Zee w orden in verband gebracht m et de stichting van Griekse kolonies in deze regio en m et de goudw inning aldaar. O f er ook een historische kern achter de T ro jaanse oorlog steekt, is m eer om streden. Verschil

lende m oderne geleerden willen ons doen geloven dat H om erus en de beeldende kunstenaars uit zijn tijd een legendarische strijd hebben vereeuw igd, die in de dertiende eeuw v.Chr. gevochten zou zijn tussen Grieken en de bew oners van Troje, een stad door H om erus gelokaliseerd aan de noordkust van het m oderne Turkije. De opgravingen in Troje h eb ben, ondanks verw oede p ogin gen van Schliemann, D örpfeld, Blegen en Korfm ann, echter geen archeo logisch bew ijs opgeleverd voor de identificatie van het m oderne Hisarlik als het hom erische Troje en, als gevolg daarvan, voor verw oesting en her bou w van de stadsburcht. Zelfs de identiteit van de bew oners blijft een raadsel. Eerst w erden zij beschouw d als Grieken, gebruik m akend van archi tectonische vorm en en artefacten die m et m ateriaal uit het Griekse vasteland overeenkom en (zie h o o fd stuk 2 en 4 ). De Duitse archeoloog M anfred Korfm ann (1 9 4 2 -2 0 0 5 ) heeft een connectie vo or gesteld m et de Hettieten, die in de bedoelde p erio de m achtig w aren in centraal Anatolië, m aar ob jec ten die deze stelling ondersteunen, zijn eveneens schaars. Al deze geleerden hebben de steun van de antieke bronnen die de oorlog z o ’n vierhonderd jaar voor H om erus dateren. W e m oeten dit idee echter beschouw en als een uitvloeisel van het g e lo o f van de Grieken in de historiciteit van al hun m ythen, zoals w e hebben gezien. Zelfs als m en een historische kern w il zien in het gevecht tussen Theseus en de M inotaurus o f in de Trojaanse oo r log, zal m en ervan uit m oeten gaan dat de histori sche gebeurtenissen in w einig opzichten hebben geleken op de mythen die er over w erden verteld. Dit had Euhem erus al begrepen.

M ODERNE INTERPRETATIES: ‘DIEP VAN B IN N E N ’
Voor nieuw e inhoudelijke interpretaties van de antieke m ythologie na de oudheid m oeten w e te rade gaan bij negentiende-eeuw se geleerden. Toen ontstond nieuw e interesse voor de Griekse en Rom einse m ythen als onderdeel van de rom antiek en als reactie op de ontdekking van de verw ant schap tussen de Indo-Europese talen, die vanaf India (Sanskriet) via Iran (Oud-Perzisch) en de steppen van Rusland tot aan Ierland gesproken w aren en, voor een belangrijk deel, nog steeds gesproken w orden. Zo bleek het Nederlandse
w oo rd ‘m o e d e r’ verw ant te zijn aan het Engelse ‘m oth er’ , het Griekse ‘m êtêr’ en ‘m ater’ in het Sanskriet en het Latijn. Net zo ontdekte m en dat de naam Jupiter een sam enstelling w as van het IndoEuropese w oo rd voor vader ( ‘piter’) en de stam Iuv- (Iovis in de genitivus), die verw ant is m et Z eu s/D io s, de Indische hem elgod Dyaus en de Germ aanse god Tuiz (n og bekend van Tuesday). Men had hierm ee, naar m en m eende, de oude, Indo-Europese h em elgod gevonden, die door al deze volkeren rond 3 0 0 0 v.Chr. zou zijn vereerd. Al snel w erden er ook allerlei parallellen getrokken tussen Griekse, Germ aanse, Keltische en Indische helden. Het probleem w as echter dat veel van deze overeenkom sten ook te vinden w aren bij Sem iti sche o f Afrikaanse helden en dat beïnvloeding door de uitw isseling van verhalen veel groter bleek te zijn dan door gem eenschappelijke erfenis, ook tus sen de Indo-Europese volkeren z e lf Dit blijkt al uit het gem ak w aarm ee de Rom einen de m ythen van de Grieken overnam en. Vandaar dat in de vergelij kende m ythologie de nadruk vandaag de dag ligt op de m ogelijke beïnvloeding van de Griekse m yth ologie vanuit het N abije Oosten. De ontdek king van het G ilgam esj-epos (tw eede helft n egen tiende eeuw ) en van de Hettitische successiem ythe (m idden tw intigste eeu w ), die erg lijkt op het ver haal van U ranus-Cronus-Zeus dat H esiodus in de Theogonie vertelt, hebben sterk hiertoe bijgedragen. De volgende grote bijdrage aan de studie van de antieke m ythologie kw am van Sigm und Freud ( 1 8 5 6 -1 9 3 9 ). Freud w as in eerste instantie niet in m ythologie per se geïnteresseerd, m aar hij zag een opvallende overeenkom st tussen de neuroses van enkele van zijn patiënten die m et hun m oeders w ilden slapen en hun vaders w ilden doden en het Oedipusverhaal. Hij noem de deze neurose dan ook het ‘O edipu scom p lex’ en veronderstelde dat alle (m annelijke) kinderen door een ‘O edipale fase’ heen m oesten gaan, w aarbij gezonde personen deze gevoelens succesvol w isten te onderdrukken en on gezonde niet. Hij veronderstelde eveneens dat de populariteit van de tragedie Koning Oedipus van Sophocles, die inderdaad in zijn tijd veel w erd opgevoerd, te m aken had m et het feit dat het noodlot van O edipus geïllustreerd w erd aan een verhaal dat wij allen, diep van binnen, herkennen. Ten slotte legde hij een verband tussen de m anier w aarop m ythen verhalen kunnen vertekenen (zoals O edipus die on gew ild zijn vader doodt en m oeder

huwt) en de vertekeningen (substitutie en repres sie) die m en in drom en kan w aarnem en. W at m en ook van Freuds theorieën m ag vinden, hij nam in ieder geval de boodsch ap van de klassieke m ythen serieus, na vele eeuw en w aarin m en deze verhalen afdeed als prim itieve vertellingen uit de kindstijd van de m ensheid. Volgens Freud w as deze ‘kinds tijd ’ nog steeds relevant. Zoals gezegd interesseerde Freud zelf zich niet in het bijzonder voor m ythologie en het w aren vooral zijn leerlingen Otto Rank (1 8 8 4 -1 9 3 9 ) en Carl Gustav Ju n g (1 8 7 5 -1 9 6 1 ) die zijn psychologische interpretatie uitwerkten en toepasten op de klassie ke (en andere) m ythologie. Rank trachtte aan te tonen dat het O edipuscom plex, in (som s sterk) vertekende vorm , ten grondslag ligt aan alle Griek se heldenverhalen. Zo w ees hij er onder m eer op dat ook Theseus on gew ild zijn vader doodt, Perseus zijn grootvader en Jason zijn oom , die allen ‘substituties’ zouden zijn voor de echte vader. Later ging hij ervan uit dat het initiële traum a voor m ensen niet de O edipale fase is, m aar de geboorte zelf, de m oeizam e gang door het geboortekanaal, en legde hij de nadruk op de m oeilijke om stan d ig heden rond de geboortes van de Griekse helden: O edipus die te vondeling w erd gelegd m et d o o r boorde voeten, Heracles die als baby d oor twee slangen w erd aangevallen, Perseus die in een kist in de zee w erd gegoo id , enzovoorts. Een probleem m et deze psychologische interpretaties is dat zij niet te falsificeren zijn, aangezien m en iedere afw ijking van het patroon een ‘substitutie’ o f ‘rep ressie’ van het oorspronkelijke m o tief kan n o e m en. V oortbordurend op de overeenkom st die Freud had gezien tussen drom en en m ythen, ontw ikkelde Jun g de archetypeleer, w aarin hij zocht naar u n i versele sym bolen in de kunst, m ythen en drom en van m ensen over de hele wereld. Zo w ees hij op het feit dat helden in de Griekse m yth ologie bijna allemaal geholpen w orden door een vrouw elijke figuur: O dysseus d oor Athena, Jason d oor Medea, Theseus door Ariadne, enzovoorts. Hij vergeleek deze vrouw elijke figuren m et de anima, het vrou w elijke deel van de m annelijke psyche, die zich ook in de kunst en in drom en zou m anifesteren als een jon ge vrouw . N u is het erg reductionistisch alle jon ge vrouw en in de kunst o f m ythologie te inter preteren als ‘animae’ , terwijl, als m en dit niet doet, het m oeilijk uit te m aken is w ie w el daarvoor staan

en w ie niet. Ook bleek het in de praktijk erg m oeilijk eenduidige betekenissen van sym bolen over de hele w ereld te vinden. De betekenis van sym bolen is nam elijk sterk afhankelijk van de cul tuur w aarin zij w orden gebruikt. Tegenover de psychologische interpretaties van Freud, Rank en Jung ontwikkelde zich daarom de sociologische interpretatie van m ythen, vooral van uit de antropologie. A ntropologen observeerden dat m ythen in niet-w esterse sam enlevingen allerlei m aatschappelijke functies konden vervullen, zoals wij ook in het geval van de klassieke m ythologie hebben gezien: rechtvaardiging van historische claim s, identiteit, propaganda, enzovoorts. De Poolse antropoloog Bronislaw M alinow ski (1 8 8 4 1942) ontwikkelde daarom het idee dat m ythen ‘blauw drukken’ o f ‘charters’ w aren w aarin de sam enleving vastlegde w ie w elke claim s w aarop had en hoe m en zich m oest gedragen. N u blijkt dit w el voor som m ige m ythen te w erken, m aar lang niet voor alle. Men kan bijvoorbeeld m oeilijk stel len dat het O edipusverhaal een blauw druk is van de w ijze w aarop m en m et zijn ouders om m oet gaan! Ook de historische claim s vorm en vaak m aar een klein onderdeel van het verhaal. De R om einen fundeerden, zoals w e hebben gezien, hun verering van Heracles op het Forum Boarium bij de Palatijn op het feit dat hij op de terugw eg van zijn r o o f van de runderen van Geryon hierlangs zou zijn gekom en, m aar m en kan m oeilijk zeggen dat dit detail het avontuur verklaart. Men ging daarom op zoek naar een m eer indringende m anier w aarop de m ythologie een bijdrage zou kunnen leveren aan de inrichting van de sam enleving. De Franse antropoloog Claude Lévi-Strauss (1 9 0 8 -2 0 0 9 ) m eende dit te kunnen vinden door als het ware een com binatie te m aken van de m aatschappelijk-relevante interpretatie van M alinow ski en de sym bolische interpretatie van Jung. Hij verbond dit verder m et het structuralism e dat ontwikkeld w as door de Zwitserse taalkundige Ferdinand de Saussure (1 8 5 7 -1 9 1 3 ). Zo ontw ikkel de hij de structurele antropologie, die allerlei bete kenisvolle verbanden ziet tussen veelal binaire o p posities in de inrichting van niet-w esterse sam en levingen (m an-vrouw , ou d -jo n g). Deze verbanden w orden vaak uitgew erkt o f vinden hun w eerslag in de m ythen van deze volkeren. Lévi-Strauss’ eigen werkterrein w as ZuidAmerika, m aar om zijn structurele analyse te ver

duidelijken, paste hij haar eveneens toe op de m ythe van O edipus, zonder twijfel als reactie op Freuds beroem de interpretatie. Hij verbond het O edipusverhaal eerst m et andere m ythen die de Grieken over het oude Thebe vertelden, van de zoektocht van Cadm us naar zijn zuster Europa, die door Zeus w as ontvoerd, en zijn stichting van de stad, tot het tweegevecht tussen de zonen van O edipus, Eteocles en Polynices, en A ntigones p ogin g na deze strijd het lichaam van Polynices te begraven tegen het verbod van de nieuw e koning van Thebe, Creon, in (zie p aragraaf 2). Lévi-Strauss zag in deze serie m ythen onder m eer een patroon van de onder- en overw aardering van fam ilierela ties. Het duidelijkst zou dit blijken uit het gedrag van O edipus, die zijn vader doodt (onderw aar dering) en m oeder huwt (overw aardering), m aar ook uit de dubbele m oord van de twee zonen van O edipus op elkaar (onderw aardering) en de exces sieve devotie die Cadm us en A ntigone voor respec tievelijk hun zuster en broer tentoonspreidden (overw aarderin g). Deze serie mythen definieert daarm ee volgens Lévi-Strauss het m aatschappelijke instituut van ver w antschap, dat valt tussen geliefden, m et w ie m en seks m ag hebben en uitzonderlijke hechte banden m ag ontwikkelen, en vreem delingen, die m en in oorlogen m ag doden. Eenzelfde schem a van overen onderw aarderingen van fam ilierelaties (m et nam e dat laatste) kan gem akkelijk gem aakt w orden voor de fam ilie van A gam em non, van zijn zoon Orestes tot diens betovergrootvader Tantalus aan toe, die zijn eigen zoon aan de goden serveerde. De m ogelijke sociologische betekenissen van m ythen w orden hierm ee een stuk uitgebreider, m aar daarvoor betaalt m en w el een prijs. De d iep e re betekenis die Lévi-Strauss in de m ythen vindt, is veel m inder duidelijk dan de m aatschappelijke functies die M alinowski eraan toedichtte, en ook controversiëler. Zo zag Lévi-Strauss in de Thebaanse m ythen tevens een m ediatie tussen de m enselijke gebondenheid aan de aarde en zijn onafhankelijk heid ervan, een interpretatie die algem een w ordt verw orpen. Verder kan m en aan de sym bolische uitleg van Lévi-Strauss hetzelfde verw ijt m aken als aan die van Ju n g, nam elijk dat hij reductionistisch is: als C ad m us’ zoektocht naar zijn zuster voor het
zelfde staat als O ed ipu s’ seks m et zijn m oeder, en de O edipusm ythe dezelfde boodschap uitdraagt als het A gam em non verhaal, hoe verklaren w e dan nog de verschillen? Lévi-Strauss heeft echter zonder tw ijfel het m yth ologisch onderzoek een belangrijke stim ulans gegeven, en ook het onderzoek naar de antieke m ythologie, w aarin zijn m ethode m et nam e is toe gepast d oor leden van de zogeheten Parijse school (Jean-Pierre Vernant (1 9 1 4 -2 0 0 7 ), Pierre VidalN aquet (1 9 3 0 -2 0 0 6 ), Marcel Detienne) in de jaren ’70 en ’80 van de vorige eeuw. Verder heeft LéviStrauss laten zien hoe verhalen die de m aatschappe lijke norm lijken te overtreden, zoals de O edipus m ythe, deze toch kunnen bevestigen. De psychologische en sociologische interpretaties van de klassieke m yth ologie hebben het vakgebied in de tw intigste eeuw gedom ineerd en doen dit n og steeds. Een w etenschapper die tegen het einde van de vorige eeuw een geheel nieuw e interpreta tie heeft voorgesteld, is de Duitse godsdienstgeleerde en classicus W alter Burkert (*1 9 3 1 ). Ook hij ziet, net als Otto Rank, vaste patronen in de hel denverhalen over de hele w ereld, m aar in plaats van deze psychologisch uit te leggen, verklaart hij ze uit hun oorsprong in de verhalen die de paleolithische jager-verzam elaars aan elkaar vertelden, ver halen over de jacht m et als basisschem a: m en gaat op avontuur, overkom t allerlei obstakels en kom t terug m et de buit. Deze structuur, die hij sam envat als ‘go and get’ , is volgens Burkert zo in onze genen ingeslepen in de honderdduizenden jaren dat wij jager-verzam elaars w aren, dat zij ons nog steeds, diep van binnen, aanspreekt en de basis vorm t ook van m oderne avonturenverhalen. Wij hebben bew ust gekozen voor de w oorden ‘diep van bin n en ’ om het effect te beschrijven dat m ythen op ons hebben, zow el volgens Burkert als volgens Freud. Zij lijken daarm ee een verklaring te zoeken voor het feit dat deze verhalen na duizen den jaren, generatie op generatie, n og steeds weten te boeien. M isschien hebben zij w el gelijk dat iets in onze psyche o f genen ons verslaafd m aakt aan deze verhalen, m aar toch is het de individuele kun stenaar o f verteller die de m ythen telkens opnieuw tot leven m oet w ekken en ze nieuw e betekenissen geeft.
