Master Maquette — Master Maquette was created five years ago with the intention of staging a ‘rehearsel’ for the actual master- project of the students from the Academy of Fine Arts. A two week residency culminated in an exhibition. This fifth edition in 2013, Nadia Naveau shows a collaboration with Sint- Lucas Antwerp. The Verbeke Foundation, where the residence now entered its fifth year, is exceptional in its combination of exhibition spaces, greenhouses and the open air. The cross- fertilization with different artists of diverse backgrounds who are already exhibiting and fellow students from various disciplines, leads to surprising images. Students enter into dialogue with each other and the space. Besides this confrontation with each other and a new environment they get visited by various artists such as Nick Hullegie, Joseph Jessen, Geoffrey De Beer, Nick Andrews, Suse
Weber, Bart Van Dijck, Lieven Segers and Vaast Colson. By questioning the students they allow space for reflection and contemplation. The title ‘Master Maquette’ reveals the importance of the process an artwork acquires. The aim for a definitive final product is not a priority, which makes the students drawn to a more experimental approach or even try to do things in other materials. Painters use large canvas sizes on various media or make installations, graphic designers build their own modules into a utopian habitat, sculptors are responding to the environment or create friction, print makers draw signs into the area and make films. omgegaan en ook andere media dan de eigen discipline worden onderzocht.

Hannelore Dreher is an Illustrator with a sense for poetry. She combines text and image in such a way that something new happens. The focus lays where most people would not notice, small peculiarities which she enlarges and gives a new story to. Her work is filled with visual and substantive links whether she's working with cardboard, stacks of colored paper, pencil or scissors. It is up to the viewer to discover these links. For Master Maquette V she made a number of paper sculptures, which were integrated on location. She created a new setting that responds to the current one, a dialogue between paper and nature.

When I write this text it's really cold. Meanwhile, we're already here in the Verbeke Foundation for a week now, everything is covered with a 15 inches thick layer of snow. Typing goes slow, my fingers are numb and also thinking is not so easy anymore. Because of the cold, fatigue or the red wine? I simply decide to write an account of my own project, without wanting to think too far on intellectual connotations that my work might have. That I leave to you. I think this place has a big impact on the work of all artists in residence; and I wanted the location itself as a starting point for my proposal. After the first visit it was immediately clear that I wanted to make a scale model of the domain itself, I wanted to bring material form the outside to the inside, and vice versa. Nature versus culture in a way. Once I began I realized that this so-called contrast actually does not exist, everything is contaminated, mixed. The domain and pond are arranged, wildness is enabled, the greenhouses are filled with weeds, also the works of art and buildings life. The boundary between inside and outside is vague. I think it is important in the first place to analyse and read the domain, as an architect and to do research towards context, scale, boundaries, the relationship inside-outside, functionality, ecology and sensitivities of owner Geert .... In the elaboration of the idea there were some aspects that came forward: first of all, the material that I wanted to bring inside: first I thought of turf, but while prospecting I discovered a piece of forgotten parking, who served as place where the trucks could run at the time that Geert still had his transport company. A piece of half paved ground behind a depot, that was hit into disuse and was overgrown by various mosses and herbs. This vegetation is very diverse in types and colors and suggests a certain scale itself. While digging I discovered the value of the black stintels underneath: there arises a large color contrast between the positive and negative. I went to work as an archaeologist in the excavation of the fragile plants, a material which I never thought I would work with. On this piece of Waste Land I left the negative form of the domain behind, the buildings were saved. The pieces of frozen moss then were laid on a cut to size concreteplexplate . At the implementation it began to snow. While laying in bed at night, I realized I had missed an opportunity: If I had laid the conreteplexplate outside on the
ground, I could have made an accelerated version of my work, Catalogus a maquette in snow inside and the remaining form outside. With the help of Stig and Sofie I decided to however use the concreteplexplate the next day and went outside to try it out. The form became a giant stamp that was printed in the snow. A second major question was where to place the object. I didn't want to reduce my work to a practical or didactic data, but it could also function as a scale model, to orientate, which comes in handy when you're in the middle of the large domain or buildings. So I decided to put my positive object in the conservatory, at the entrance from the large hangar and next to a bridge over a canal that runs from outside to inside. Here the visitor can orient himself, here nature penetrates the buildings, the border is only a glass membrane where the wintersun plays, and especially: at this place I felt good to start the preparations for my work. I decided that this space would be the eventual place where i would present my work and by removing the weeds and rake the sandy soil a human act took place whitin the conservatory again. By choosing two ambivalent places, conservatory and parking, the sharp contrast between nature and culture got more blurry and complex. At this time this writing still contains to find out how I can enforce the concept. In which way is this model an autonomous object? By the act of gravity on the concreteplexplate the plane gets warped. This is atypical for a scale model, but not for a sculpture. How can I let my companions participate in this project? Can I give my interpretation of their work, personality, after two intense weeks of living together? And finally, can I design my master plan on this carrier, what is my position as an architect-artist? If you read my proposal for this project and text carefully, you however understand me. I would sign for a prolonged residency at Verbeke Foundation, to further develop Master Maquette from Nadia Naveau and my friends. And now back to the company and the stove, because it is cold.

architect-kunstenaar?

Katinka De Jonge makes installations with light and thereby related videos, consisting of sculpture or an object that gets exposed or filmed in a certain way. The image that emerges is projected somewhere else in space. Because of this lighting artificial landscapes and distortions from architectural places take shape. The presence of the spectator can play along in the created image. The installation and the projected image belong together, collectively they provide a different experience of space and the passage of time. For this installation a projection screen has been filmed from sunrise to sunset. This video is shown on the same screen, so one day gets projected over the other.

The main theme in my work is time and memory. Time always flows and all things change in time. Even if the scenery changes in the stream of time, memories are engraved in ones memory. Where I make my work is of great importance to me. I found a huge wall in the Verbeke foundation. The scenery behind was hidden because of this wall. I wondered "what would I see if this wall wouldn't be an obstacle between me and the underlying landscape". I started to make a drawing on the wall. A drawing of the scenery behind the wall through the window. The scenery was always changing; one time it was nice weather, at other times it was snowing. I captured this changing scenery during two weeks.

Gray is the landscape in the winter. The grey of our urban landscape is increasing and often there's only little place left for nature. Nature is something I desperately need and is therefore the main theme through my paintings. In response to my own grey world, I like to work with a rich color palette. Both color as nature represent a particular sense of happiness for me. Happiness is something many people are searching for, but only few people find it in our contemporary society. With this thought in mind, I started this project. By doing various two dimensional experiments, my work eventually became a colorful, 3-dimensional, staged oasis. The installation expresses itself as a mutation who gets established between the dry wasteland of the greenhouses at the Verbeke Foundation.

The project ' Verbeke Etiquette ' is the result from observing objects in the cafeteria/partyhall of the Verbeke Foundation. A space that is mainly designed to serve visitors/ attendees. During the period I spent here it was quite clear that these objects, were more in disuse than in use, this in contradiction with the purpose of how and why these products are designed. The work is focussed on the actions associated with these objects, actions that occur when the visitor/attender is present. I have tried to make these acts from within the object present, without creating a direct reference to the body. I try to find the boundary between etiquette, habit and necessity in this space. Every (sub)culture, association and place has it's ceratin ' etiquette '.
