Beoogde leeftijdsgroep: Leerlingen van 8 jaar oud Duur van de activiteit: 2x45 minuten (90 minuten) Samenvatting: Het is de bedoeling dat de leerlingen onderzoeken hoe lucht zich gedraagt in water. In de eerste fase van het onderzoek bestuderen de kinderen hoe lucht ontsnapt uit een beker die in water wordt ondergedompeld. Voor ze zelf praktische onderzoeken uitvoeren, moeten de kinderen voorspellingen doen en die bespreken met hun klasgenoten. De bedoeling van deze discussie is om meer te weten te komen over de voorkennis van de leerlingen over dit onderwerp en om te zien hoe die voorkennis in verband staat met hun opvattingen van nu. Dankzij verder onderzoek zullen de kinderen te weten komen dat lucht, net zoals water, lege ruimtes opvult.
Doelstelling: • Ontwikkeling van de observatievaardigheden van de leerlingen, bijsturing van de opvattingen van de leerlingen over lucht als materie die de omringende ruimte opvult; • Ontwikkeling van de vaardigheid van de leerlingen om voorkennis te gebruiken om een geobserveerde fenomenen te verklaren; • Ontwikkeling van de vaardigheid van de leerlingen om simpele onderzoekjes uit te voeren met als doel de verificatie van de eigen opvattingen; • Ontwikkeling van de vaardigheid van de leerlingen om kennis te gebruiken voor het oplossen van de specifieke onderzoeksproblemen (onderzoeksvragen) Materiaal: Voor iedere groep leerlingen: • grote bak met water; • plastic transparant bekertje met een volume van 100 – 200 ml; • nog zo’n bekertje maar met een klein gaatje onderaan; • blad papier; • keukenpapier

Lucht als materie Air as Matter Lesplan Beschrijving van de activiteit (met inbegrip van de notities van de leerkracht)
1. Aanzet (hypotheses vormen) De leerkracht brengt een grote bak met water en een klein stukje gekreukt papier mee. Hij/Zij vraagt de leerlingen of het volgens hen mogelijk is om het papier op de één of andere manier in de grote bak onder te dompelen zonder dat het papier nat wordt. De leerlingen vertellen hoe zij dit zouden aanpakken en bespreken hun voorstellen. De leerkracht probeert de leerlingen ertoe aan te zetten om argumenten te gebruiken; hij/zij verzoekt de kinderen niet alleen om te vertellen wat hun ideeën zijn, maar hij/zij vraagt hen ook om uit te leggen waarom ze net die oplossing voorstellen (al naargelang het cognitieve niveau van de leerlingen zal de argumentatie gebaseerd zijn op vorige ervaringen en dit is wat de leerkracht wil horen). De kinderen mogen verschillende oplossingen voorstellen, zoals het water uit de bak gieten, het papier eerst in een plastic zakje steken en zo verder. Aan het einde van de discussie toont de leerkracht de kinderen hoe hij/zij het zou aanpakken (enkel indien de leerlingen niet zelf met de methode op de proppen zijn gekomen). Hij/ Zij neemt een kleine beker en maakt een stukje gekreukt papier vast binnenin die beker aan de onderkant ervan. De leerkracht houdt de beker ondersteboven om te testen of het papier goed vastzit. Daarna neemt hij/zij de beker met het papier nog steeds ondersteboven vast en dompelt hem onder in de grote bak water. Na een paar seconden neemt hij/zij de beker uit het water en toont aan de leerlingen dat het papier nog droog is, ook al werd het net in een bak met water ondergedompeld. De leerlingen herhalen de observatie in groepjes zodat iedereen inziet dat de methode van de leerkracht werkt. Het volgende onderzoeksprobleem vloeit voort uit deze aanzet en de leerkracht formuleert het dan ook letterlijk aan de leerlingen: Waarom blijft het papier in een omgekeerde beker ondergedompeld in water droog? Op dit moment is de onderzoeksvraag geïdentificeerd. Daarna vraagt de leerkracht aan de leerlingen om de gedemonstreerde situatie te onderzoeken. Hij/Zij moedigt de kinderen aan om uit te zoeken hoe we de beker met het papier erin in de grote bak water kunnen onderdompelen
zonder dat het papier nat wordt. De groepjes leerlingen stellen verschillende methodes voor en controleren daarna of de methode werkt of niet. Zo krijgen ze ook meer empirische informatie over het fenomeen in kwestie. Die empirische informatie kan hen bovendien helpen om nog meer precieze voorspellingen te doen. Wanneer de leerkracht merkt dat de leerlingen geen nieuwe ideeën ontwikkelen en het gevoel hebben dat ze al alles weten over het fenomeen, moet hij/ zij hen stimuleren om een specifieke uitleg te geven over de geobserveerde situatie. Daarom verzoekt de leerkracht de leerlingen om Opdracht 1 van op de werkbladen in te vullen. Bij deze opdracht moeten de kinderen specifieke voorspellingen doen. Er worden verschillende situaties met een beker, papier en een bak water weergegeven. De kinderen moeten de situaties omcirkelen waarin zij denken dat het stukje papier op de bodem van de beker droog blijft. Bovendien moeten ze voor elk van de 8 weergegeven situaties ook het stuk van de beker kleuren waar volgens hen lucht in zit. Het hoofddoel van deze opdracht is om de leerlingen aan te zetten om heel precies over de situatie te gaan nadenken. Terwijl de leerlingen aan deze opdracht werken mogen ze niet de kans krijgen hun voorspellingen empirisch te testen. Daarom neemt de leerkracht dan ook al het materiaal van bij de groepjes weg. De leerlingen moeten op een juiste manier leren denken. Terwijl de leerlingen bezig zijn met Opdracht 1 loopt de leerkracht tussen de groepjes met leerlingen en vraagt sommige van hen waarom ze net die of die situatie hebben omcirkeld. Met zijn/haar vragen moet de leerkracht de leerlingen ertoe aanzetten om uit te leggen hoe water in de beker terechtkomt en hoe de lucht ontsnapt uit de beker die in het water wordt ondergedompeld. De leerkracht benadert ook individuele kinderen, zodat de leerlingen het gevoel krijgen dat ze hun opvattingen vrijuit kunnen laten horen (ze zijn meestal bang om hun ideeën luidop in de klas te vermelden als ze ze niet vooraf hebben besproken in groep of met de leerkracht).

Lucht als materie Air as Matter 2. Onderzoek (Ontwerpen en uitvoeren van experimenten en observaties) Na Opdracht 1 bespreken de leerlingen klassikaal hun ideeën. De leerkracht fungeert als moderator, zodat alle leerlingen aan bod komen en alle opvattingen besproken worden. Daarna geeft de leerkracht het materiaal terug aan de groepjes en mogen ze hun voorspellingen van in Opdracht 1 verifiëren. De leerlingen mogen nu de omcirkelde nummers van in Opdracht 1 wijzigen zodat alles klopt met hun bevindingen. Daarna neemt de leerkracht zijn/haar materiaal er weer bij. Hij/Zij houdt een beker ondersteboven en vraagt de leerlingen wat er zal gebeuren als hij/zij de beker water in de pot met water onderdompelt en de beker een klein beetje kantelt eens die in het water zit. De leerkracht praat hier enkel over; hij/zij demonstreert niet wat er wordt gezegd. De leerlingen moeten deze kwestie bestuderen zonder empirisch onderzoek. Dat houdt in dat de leerkracht opnieuw het materiaal van de groepjes leerlingen wegneemt. De leerlingen wordt gevraagd om de situatie te tekenen onder Opdracht 2 op de werkbladen. Preciezer gezegd moeten ze tekenen wat er zal gebeuren indien de beker met een stukje droog papier op de bodem wordt gekanteld eens de beker in het water zit. Daarnaast, net zoals bij de vorige opdracht, wordt hun gevraagd om op hun tekening aan te duiden waar er lucht aanwezig is en ook waar er water zit. De leerkracht stimuleert hen om op een precieze manier te gaan denken. De kinderen moeten putten uit de kennis die ze reeds hebben vergaard; ze moeten (bijvoorbeeld) inzien dat vooraleer de beker wordt gekanteld, het papier in de beker nog steeds droog is; dat het papier met andere woorden nog niet in contact is gekomen met het water. Daarenboven moeten de leerlingen aan hun groepsleden vertellen wat ze over de situatie denken. Alle groepsleden moeten het eens worden over één uitleg. Hun gezamenlijke opvatting moeten ze tekenen op een groot blad papier en dan voorstellen tijdens een klasdiscussie. Na de discussie mogen de kinderen hun ideeën verifiëren en empirische informatie inwinnen – de leerkracht geeft hen dan dus hun materiaal terug zodat ze kunnen kijken wat er echt gebeurt.
Tijdens de activiteit en de daaruit voortvloeiende discussies moeten de leerlingen inzien dat er luchtbellen uit de beker ontsnappen en dat, terwijl dat gebeurt, water in de beker vloeit. Wanneer er slechts een paar luchtbellen uit de beker ontsnappen, blijft het papier onderaan de beker droog. De leerlingen zullen kunnen zien dat het water beweegt op het moment dat de lucht (in de vorm van luchtbellen) uit de beker ontsnapt. Dat is de reden waarom we transparante waterbakken moeten gebruiken. Daarna formuleert de leerkracht een conclusie die gebaseerd is op de bevindingen van de leerlingen. De leerkracht moet ervoor zorgen dat de leerlingen weten dat de luchtbellen eigenlijk lucht zijn. Op dit moment dient de leerkracht de kinderen ook te herinneren aan het hoofddoel van hun onderzoek – ze moeten uitzoeken waarom het papier droog is gebleven, ook nadat het in water werd ondergedompeld. De leerkracht vraagt de leerlingen om hun eigen uitleg te formuleren op basis van de resultaten tijdens de vorige observaties. De leerkracht kan hun aandacht nogmaals vestigen (indien nodig of gepast) op de situatie waarin het papier droog blijft nadat het werd ondergedompeld in het water. De leerlingen bespreken hun ideeën in groepjes om meer informatie te vergaren. Ze moeten zich daarbij baseren op wat ze al zijn te weten gekomen tijdens de vorige experimenten. Wanneer de leerlingen het gevoel hebben dat ze al doorhebben hoe alles in elkaar zit, moet de leerkracht hen stimuleren om hun idee verder uit te werken. Hij/Zij kan vragen wat er zou gebeuren indien we een gaatje in de onderkant van de beker zouden maken. De leerkracht toont de leerlingen een beker met een klein gaatje in. Hij/Zij maakt het stukje papier (net als aan het begin van de activiteit) vast in de beker en draait de beker ondersteboven. Hij/Zij vraagt de kinderen wat er zal gebeuren als we de beker in de bak met water steken. Dit is Opdracht 3 op de werkbladen. Dit onderdeel lijkt op de eerste opdracht, maar de kinderen moeten beseffen dat er deze keer een gat in de bodem van de beker zit. Ze moeten de situaties omcirkelen waarvan ze denken dat het papier droog zal blijven. Net als bij de vorige opdrachten, kleuren ze het gedeelte van de beker in waar volgens hen lucht zit. Na deze opdracht mogen de leerlingen hun ideeën bespreken en daarna kunnen ze hun voorspellingen (ideeën) verifiëren.

Lucht als materie Air as Matter 3. Evaluatie (Bewijsmateriaal evalueren) De leerkracht zegt aan de leerlingen dat ze Opdracht 4 op de werkbladen mogen oplossen. Deze opdracht fungeert als conclusie. De kinderen wordt gevraagd waarom het papier op de bodem van een beker die ondersteboven in water wordt ondergedompeld droog blijft en waarom het papier nat wordt wanneer er een beker met een gat wordt gebruikt. De leerlingen dienen zich hierbij te baseren op hun geobserveerde bevindingen. Op die manier komen ze terug op het geïdentificeerde onderzoeksprobleem.
Daarna kan de leerkracht de leerlingen vragen om hun verworven kennis in een andere situatie toe te passen (Opdracht 5): We hebben een lege fles met een trechter erin. Er zit echter plasticine rond het gat van de fles, waardoor de trechter afgedicht is. Wanneer we proberen water in de fles te gieten, komt er slechts een klein beetje water effectief in de fles terecht. De leerlingen wordt gevraagd waarom het niet mogelijk is om water in de fles te gieten. De leerkracht zegt hen dat ze zich moeten baseren op de bevindingen uit de vorige opdrachten.

Duid op je tekening aan (net zoals bij de vorige opdracht) waar de lucht zit en ook waar het water zich bevindt. Wees precies; denk goed na; overleg met je klasgenoten. Onthoud dat, vooraleer de beker wordt gekanteld, het papier op de onderkant droog is. Dat betekent dat het papier nog niet in contact is gekomen met het water.
