BAB 1 PENDAHULUAN
1.1
Latar Belakang
Sometimes it feels like life is an uphill race, sometimes it feels like a losing battle, but we need to shine on. No matter who’s trying to turn off our light. (transgender anonim)

Novel-novel yang menampilkan fitur transgender misalnya Almost Perfect karya Delacorte, Embrace my Reflection karya T.A. Chase, A Rose is A Rose karya Jet Mykels dan Dress to Thrill karya Kimberly Gardner.

8
acapkali memecatnya ketika mereka tahu kecenderungan The Doll untuk berperilaku seperti perempuan. Seiring kehidupannya yang kacau, The Doll sempat mengonsumsi narkotika. Kemudian, ia mengikuti sebuah kontes kecantikan transgender dan keluar sebagai juara, sehingga berhak atas gelar The Grand Empress of Savannah.
9
Chablis melalui perjuangan tokoh The Doll untuk mencapai social visibility.
Dalam novelnya The World in Evening, ia menyatakan bahwa, You see, true High Camp always has an underlying seriousness. You can’t camp about something you don’t take seriously. You’re not making fun of it; you’re making fun out of it. You’re expressing what’s basically serious to you in terms of fun and artifice and elegance.
Hal tersebut direpresentasikan dalam beberapa novel seperti Almost Perfect karya Delacorte, Embrace my Reflection karya T.A. Chase, A Rose is A Rose karya Jet Mykels dan Dress to Thrill karya Kimberly Gardner.
13

Dalam blog pribadinya itu, Simone mengulas novel Hiding My Candy sebagai book of the month.

Up : Camp in the Portrait of Photography of Daniella Rossell and Pierre et Gilles.
Moe Meyer. Melalui bukunya, The Politics and Poetics of Camp, Meyer meletakkan dasar pemikiran bahwa Camp berakar dari teori queer.
20
yang mereka tampilkan (performatifitas) secara konsisten. Dalam hal ini Meyer mengatakan, As the rejection of a social identity based upon the differentiation of sexual practices, queer identity must be more correctly aligned with various gender, rather than sexual... queerness contains the knowledge that social identities, including those of sex, but especially those of gender, are always accompanied by some sort of public signification in the form of specific enactments, embodiments, or speech acts which are nonsexual or, in the very least, extrasexual.

Building on deconstruction’s insights into human subjectivity (selfhood) as a fluid, fragmented, dynamic collectivity of possible “selves,” queer theory defines individual sexuality as a fluid, fragmented, dynamic collectivity of possible sexualities. (Tyson, 2006 : 352).
(Meyer, 1994: 2).
1.5.2
Asal Muasal Teori Camp dan Keterkaitannya dengan Queer/Gay
Sensibility Referensi mengenai terminologi Camp muncul pertama kali pada kamus bahasa slang yang ditulis oleh J. Redding Ware pada tahun 1909 berjudul Passing English of the Victorian Era: A Dictionary of Heterodox English, Slang, and Phrase.
23
Fanny mengatakan bahwa “My campish undertakings are not at present meeting with the success they deserve. Whatever I do seems to get me into hot water somewhere”.
24
When Charles asks Stephen if he has ever overheard the word “camp” used in conversation inhis “voyages au bout de la nuit,”Stephen admits that he has heard the word used on several occasions in nightclubs. Charles retorts, “you thought it meant a swishy little boy with peroxided hair, dressed in a picture hat and a feather boa, pretending to be Marlene Dietrich? Yes, in queer circles they call that camping. It’s all very well in its place, but it’s an utterly debased form.”
Meyer menyatakan, Instead, what emerges from Sontag’s essay is the birth of the camp trace, or residual camp, a strategy of un-queer appropriation of queer praxis whose purpose, as I will demonstrate, is the enfusement of the un-queer with the queer aura, acting to stabilize the ontological challenge of Camp through a dominant gesture of reincorporation. Thus there are not different kinds of Camp. There is only one. And it is queer. (Meyer, 1994 : 4).
menampilkan identitas queer; strategi
Dalam hal ini, Newton menyatakan, Drag suggests: “if sex-role behavior can be achieved by the ‘wrong’ sex, it logically follows that it is in reality also achieved, not inherited by the ‘right’ sex…The gay world, via drag, says that sex-role behavior is an appearance; it is ‘outside.’ It can be manipulated at will. (Newton, 1999 : 98).
Babuscio menyatakan, It is the irony of the incongruity of camp, which appeals to the “gay sensibility,” that some of the consistently used contrasts in camp include: masculine/feminine, youth/old (age), spirit/flesh and high/low (social status). Aestheticism is the second inherent feature of camp, the most vital aspect of which is Camp’s “opposition to puritan morality.”Most importantly, camp invokes its aesthetic nature in three ways: “as a view of art, as a view of life; and as a practical tendency in things or persons. (Babuscio, 1977 : 119-120).
Sebagai ‘other’ cara
33
Penampilan mereka dalam peran lawan jenis adalah fitur being in a role playing yang semakin mengukuhkan semangat Camp kaum marjinal untuk being what-is not (menjadi apa yang bukan dilabelkan orang terhadap dirinya).
36
When parody is seen as process, not as form, then the relationship between texts becomes simply an indicator of the power relationships between social agents who wield those texts, one who possesses the “original,” the other who possesses the parodic alternative. (Meyer, 1994 : 9).
Meyer menyatakan, In that case, parody becomes the process whereby the marginalized and disenfranchised advance their own interests by entering alternative signifying codes into discourse by attaching them to existing structures of signification. Without the process of parody, the marginalized agent has no access to representation, the apparatus of which is controlled by the dominant order (Case 9). Camp, as specifically queer parody, becomes, then, the only process by which the queer is able to enter representation and to produce social visibility. (Meyer, 1994 : 9).
39
dimaksudkan
sebagai
olok-olok
terhadap
mereka,
ternyata
mereka
transformasikan sebagai sebuah keunikan. Tyson menyatakan dalam hal ini, “We’re not afraid to be seen,” “You don’t tell us who we are—we tell us who we are!”. “We’re here, we’re queer –get used to it!”. (Tyson, 2006 :334). And thus it’s a way of transforming victimhood into power (Tyson, 2006 : 331).
Newton mengatakan, Newton also suggests that the camp ideology is one that works to undermine the negatif connotations and marginality of being othered by society, through a specific brand of humor. Camp humor is, Newton maintains,“a system of laughing at one’s incongruous position instead of crying. That is,the humor does not cover up, it transforms.” (Newton, 1999 : 100).
Humor, the last feature of camp, is also the result of a strong incongruity between an “object, person, or situation and its context.”This means that camp humor is often based on a kind of comic irony, one that can be identified as almost painful, but not so uncomfortable as to reduce the effect of the humor. Sarcasm and “bitter-wit” are means of dealing with the often-hostile environment faced by the gay population. So the camp humor is a metaphor for the humor that homosexuals employ in life. (Babuscio, 1977 : 112).
dalam bentuk exaggerated gesture, dress and speech.
42
Yet, as I have outlined, the only visible aspects of the homosexual sign were Wilde’s own signifying codes of dress, gesture, and speech that were built upon and preserved as the signifier of the new identity. I suggest that the performance of these codes is what became known as “Camp,” a new word that appeared along with the identity during the years immediately following the trials, a word that was entered into J.Redding Ware’s 1909 slang dictionary and defined as “actions and gestures of exaggerated emphasis.” (Meyer, 1994 : 108). (Meyer, 1994 : 108).
1.5.5.4 Strategi Life in Performance (Hidup dalam Pertunjukkan) Strategi Camp berikutnya adalah life in performance.
By this logic, camp becomes a “strategy for a situation.”Newton defines camp as having three recurrent characteristics: “incongruity, theatricality, and humor. All three are intimately related to the homosexual situation and strategy. Incongruity is the subject matter of camp, theatricality its style, and humor is strategy.” (Newton, 1997 : 102).
46
The gay world, via drag, says that sex-role behavior is an appearance; it is ‘outside.’ It can be manipulated at will.”More complexly, drag is a “double inversion” that states: although my sartorial surface reads as feminine, my interior “essence” is masculine. However, in the same instance drag also symbolizes the opposite inversion: “my appearance ‘outside’ [my body, my gender] is masculine but my essence ‘inside’ [myself] is feminine.” (Newton, 1997 : 98).
Theatricality, the third feature of camp, is related to the belief in living life-astheatre, or “being versus role-playing, reality and appearance.” Camp sees everything as a kind of performance. Babuscio suggests thata “role” is the societal norm we are expected to play on a daily basis, our appropriate behavior depending on the place we occupy in society. (Babuscio, 1977 : 111).
47
The very theatricality of “passing for straight,” is also inherent to camp’s love of the being-what –it-is-not. It is camp’s mimicry of such gender stereotypes that draws attentuon to their very social construction. (Babuscio, 1977 : 111).

Strategi parodi Camp 2. Strategi humor Camp; laughter in tears(tawa dalam tangis)
49
3. Strategy of posing (strategi dalam bersikap) 4. Strategi life in performance (hidup dalam pertunjukkan) 5. Kebertahanan transgender melalui social visibility 6. Pemberdayaan transgender 7. Wacana Normalitas alternatif ala Camp
1.6.2
Bab I adalah pendahuluan
