2. Introduction Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally (Kabat-Zinn, 1994). Mindfulness is originally based on Eastern (Buddhist) meditation practices (Bear, 2003; Hanh, 1976). Through the practice of meditation, an ability to direct one's attention can be developed. A main goal of mindfulness training is a moment-to-moment attempt to perceive an event and to let it be registered with full awareness, as it is, without distortion from associated thoughts from the observer (Kabat-Zinn et al., 1985). Contrary to conventional (cognitive) behavioral therapies, mindfulness training focus on universal difficulties rather than on specific problems (Bögels et al., 2008). Two main streams of mindfulness based treatments are MindfulnessBased-Stress-Reduction (MBSR; Kabat-Zinn, 1994) and Mindfulness-Based-Cognitive-Therapy (MBCT; Segal et al., 2002). They are applied in over 250 health care centers across the USA alone (Jha et al., 2007), and are still rapidly increasing worldwide, including the Netherlands. Mindfulness training has been shown to be effective for a variety of problems in children, adolescents and adults. It effectively reduces stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, burn out, and relapse prevention of alcohol and substance abuse (i.e., Bear, 2003; Carmody, & Baer, 2008; Cohen-Katz et al., 2005; KabatZinn et al., 1992; Kuyken et al., 2008; Segal et al., 2002; Shapiro, et al., 2005; Teasdale et al., 1995; Witkiewitz et al., 2005). In a meta-analysis, Baer (2003) found a large post-treatment and a medium effect size at follow-up of mindfulness based trainings. Further, in another meta-analysis of 64 studies of Mindfulness-based interventions (Grossman et al., 2004), an average overall effect size of 0.54 was shown but it was also shown that only seven studies were RCT’s. Within the Netherlands, our academic treatment center for parents and children, UvA minds (www.uvaminds.nl), takes on a leading position with respect to development and research of the effectiveness of clinical mindfulness training programs for a variety of clinical groups. Our clinic has 2
been visited by professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor Mark Williams, and professor Nirbay Singh over the past few years and direct collaborations with these world leading mindfulness researchers exists. In addition to providing mindfulness training to a variety of patient groups, our clinic also serves as an academic educational center for professionals who want to be trained as mindfulness trainer or Mindful Parenting trainer. Reflected by this background information, this keuzemodule Mindfulness will include a large variety of clinical experience and research results will be presented by experienced clinical mindfulness trainers as well as mindfulness researchers. 3. Prior knowledge This keuzemodule can be followed by students from within and outside the Netherlands. Lectures will be held in English since this is an international course. This keuzemodule combines well with Psychopathologie in which different psychiatric disorders are discussed, some of which are part of this course in relation to mindfulness-based interventions (ASD and ADHD). It also can be followed as an addition to the course Psychotherapeutische Stromingen in which different cognitive and behavioral treatment modules are discussed (i.e., behavior therapy, client-centered therapy, family therapy) and the student can then learn about the differences with the mindfulness training approach. Further, the keuzemodule is a good start for the (research) master Orthopedagogiek, clinical traineeships and/or a master thesis since in all of these mindfulness and mindfulness based interventions play a role anno 2012. Further, it is recommended to study the following website prior to the course: http://www.aandachttraining.info/de-training/research.html
4. Study goals Knowledge and understanding - The student acquires knowledge and insight about the most common Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy trainings (eindtermen PW: 4, 6). Applying knowledge and understanding - The student will practice with different forms meditations her/himself, and will assess mindfulness based interventions in case examples (eindtermen PW: 8). Making judgments - The student will learn about the historical perspective of the development of mindfulness-based interventions (eindtermen PW: 4) - The student will be able to form a critical judgment about her/his opinions on mindfulness-based interventions and its relation to more classically known forms of therapy. The student will be able to form this opinion based on scientific literature combined with her/his own experience with meditation practices (eindtermen PW: 5, 7, 8, 9). Communication - The student has developed knowledge of and respect for the implementation of mindfulness-based interventions in different parent, child and adolescent psychiatric settings and disorders. She/he has practiced communicating directly about this with experienced mindfulness trainers from a clinical practice (eindtermen PW: 21). 5. Content This keuzemodule is introduced in the curriculum from the academic year 2012-2013. The course is divided over around 5-6 main themes; general introduction in mindfulness, Mindful Parenting, mindfulness during pregnancy, mindfulness training and depression, mindfulness training and ADHD, mindfulness training and autism and a general overview of mindfulness interventions and its effectiveness in child and adolescent psychiatry. Each of these main themes will be embodied from three perspectives: 1. A clinical perspective; actual training protocols and patient groups will be discussed and be viewed in different videos, 2. A research perspective; scientific studies will be discussed, 3. An experiential perspective; the student will have the opportunity to gain experience with some meditation exercises and fills out questionnaires to become aware of his/her own state of mindfulness. 3

Teachers will include mindfulness, meditation, and yoga teachers as well as a midwife and experienced mindfulness researchers. 4
Total course hours: 6 ECTS x 28 hours = 168 hours. This will be divided as follows: - Interactive lectures: 7 x 2 = 14 hours - Exam: 1 x 3 hours = 3 hours - Practice of mindfulness exercises at home = 10 hours - Self-study of the literature (book and articles): = 121 hours - Watching informational films and documentaries on Blackboard (or in lecture hall if it can be reserved): 10 hours. - Rating of mindfulness questionnaires = 10 hours.
