CHAPTER IV THE CHARACTEERIZATION OF JADE SPERRY AS A CENTRAL CHARACTER
As stated in chapter I, the writer uses the guidelines proposed by Graham Little to analyze character in Breath Of Scandal. According to Graham Little, the writer has to analyze character from three points of view ( 1966: 93). The first is the basic characteristics, social relationship, and mental qualities of the character. The second is the personality from various points of view, including the following points of view: how the character sees himself, how various other characters see him, and how he or she develops or fails to develop during yhe course of the story. The last point of view is the place of the character in the work that consist of the place in the work, place in the story and relationship to the theme. In the character of the main character she has the round character in this season the writer to be analyze. 4.1 The Basic Characteristic. 4.1.1 Physical Characteristic There is no detailed physical description of Jade Sperry as a central character. It is stated that Jade Sperry is the beauty girl.

As she is not the only character in this novel. She is related to other characters, therefore, she has some roles in the story, such as a success women in her live with other characters and environments. Jade Sperry with Gery Parker Before the bad accident, Jade is the perfect girl in Palmetto. She has a boy friend, they are a clever youth. This can be seen in the following lines. “ Kau memang sudah dari sananya cantik. Kau pintar populer. Kau mungkin akan jadi lulusan terbaik di kelas kita, dan kalau bukan kau, cowok yang sekarang menjadi lulusan terbaik. (Ibid: 25) Jade and Gery Parker is a young couple in her school. They have ambition and the goals in their lives. They wants the societies in her town can live with resonably. “ Dengarkan aku, Gary Parker. Aku tidak peduli dengan status sosial. Aku juga tidak menginginkan hidup mewah. Aku memilliki ambis sendiri, yang tidak tergantung pada apakah aku mencintaimu atau tidak. Memperoleh beasiswa hanyalah langkah pertama dari langkah-langkah selanjutnya. Sama seperti kau, aku juga memiliki latar belakang keluarga yang kelam, yang ingin kutinggalkan. Even they not agree with Neal but they do it. “Karena sebelum kita pulang,” jawab Neal dengan sikap di buat- buat,” kami bertiga aka menggagahimu dulu.” ( Ibid: 64) Jade not make scruple with Neal if she want destroy him, because him Gary was died and she was lost her expectation with Gary.

“ Ia menoleh pada Neal dan berkata,” Kalau kau berani mengklaim anakku, kau akan masuk penjara, Neal. Beerani menggangguku lagi, akan kugugat kau secara perdata ke pengadilan atas apa yang kau lakukan pada diriku dan Gary. Kejahatanmu akan terungkap dan kau akn di hukum. Kau sudah „habis‟, dan itu sudah cukup. Semua sudah berakhir.” ( Ibid: 674) 2. Jade Sperry with Hutch Jolly Hutch is the second man in rapist accidents. In for long time Hutch was fall in love with Jade, but he do it although she is the special woman. Hutch can do it because he fear with Neal. Hutch do it with rage make her nearly with die. “ Benar. Hutch mendapat gilliran kedua. Dia yang paling kasar. Dan paling besar. Dia hampir saja membuatku mati kehabisan nafas.” (Ibid: 90) Jade came in the hospital to Hutch, but she came in there because empathy and she was gave apology to Hutch. Jade must came in hospital because she fell if its the last she can meet with Hutch. Hutch get have kidney, so he can not live for long time. “ Jade pasti bergumul dengan keputusan ini sepanjang malam di alam bawah sadarnya, karena sewaktu bangun pagi tadi, ia memutuskan hari ini akan menyetirnya ke Savannah dan menengok Hutch. Itu ia lakukan bukan karena meragukan parahnya kondisi Hutch. Ia sama sekali belum berubah pikiran mengenai keberatannya membiarkan Graham menjalani tes untuk menjadi donor ginjal. Ia hanya merasa wajib datang dan menemui Hutch, karena ini mungkin untuk yang terakhir kalinya. ( Ibid: 532)

3. Jade Sperry with Lamar Griffith Lamar is the third man in rapist accident, altough for long time many peopole have mind if Lamar is gay. He want ppoint out for his friends if he is a normal not gay but many peopole not belive with him. “Lamar terdiam dan menghela nafas dalam-dalam. “ Sementara bagiku, perbuatan itu kulakukan sebagai uji kejantanan. Aku harus membuktikan kepada mereka dan juga pada diriku sendiri bahwa aku benar-benar laki-laki. Namun sayangnya, itu tidak berhasil.” (Ibid: 532) Lamar is very fear with his mother, he always close this accidents from his mother. Lamar is very tortured with it, he wants this accidents can open end and he can live peace and full without pressure from any one. “Lamar benar- benar ingin kabur dari dalam kelas, terus berlarike pusat kota dan menjatuhkan diri di hadapan jaksa wilayah, memohon belas kasihannya. Lebih baik dia mengkhianati teman-temannya da menyerahkan bukti-bukti yang diperlukan negara, lebih menjadi musuh bebuyutan Ivan Petchett seumur hidup, lebih baik di penjara berasama para pencuri, germo, dan pembunuh berantai, dari pada harus menghadapi amukan ibunya.” (Ibid: 138) Lamar wants Jade give him some apology about that accidents. Lamar know if Jade is the strong woman old time until now. Lamar know the god will give him some law about him conducts. “ Aku tidak bisa mengatakan apa-apa, Jade. Aku harus mengikuti kemauan Neal. Maafkan aku .” Air mata Lamar merebak.” Kau kuat. Sejak dulu kau kuat.” (Ibid : 35)

Jade with Donna Dee Before this accidents Donna dee is the good friend from Jade. Jade‟s belive with her, every situation happy and sad they always together. Jade always close the secreat if Hutch wants Jade dinner with him only just her soulmet Donna Dee. Jade tidak pernah menceritakan pada Donna Dee bahwa Hutch beberapa kali meneloponnya untuk mengajak kencan. Ia menolak karena Gary. Tapi seandainya ia belum punya pacar tetap sekalipun, ia tidak akan pernah mau berkencan dengan Hutch karena tidak mau menyakiti perasaan Donna Dee. (Ibid: 22) Jade is very care with Donna Dee, Have Donna still live or she was die? Jade fear if Donna Dee not safe, actually Jade must be care because this accident. Jade some mind if this all is the plan from Neal and his friend, after Jade continue to Donna. Jade merasa bila ia memikirkan masalah itu sekarang, ia bisa gila.Apa yang ada di depannya saat ini, itulah yanng harus ia pikirkan lebih dulu- mengenai Donna Dee, misalnya. Jade mengkwatirkan keselamatan sahabatnya itu. Mungkin saja setelah meninggalkannya disana, pemuda- pemmuda itu kembali dan melakukan hal yang sama terhadap Donna Dee. Mungkin begitulah rencana Nealmemisahkan mereka dan membuat mereka praktis tidak berdaya. Bisa jadi Donna Dee sekarang luka parah, tergeletak pingsan di suatu tempat di jalan raya. Atau bahkan sudah mati. (Ibid: 22) As a friend Donna give question for Jade about her situation after her car walk out. Jade with Neal and Donna still alone because Neal not want Donna join with him. She fear if Donna gave bad explain that will make her accidents about rapist lost. “ Donna Dee, aku sama sekali tidak bersalah,” Jade berkata sungguhsungguh, suaranya pecah.” Aku tidak melakukan apa-apa yang sifatnya mendorong mereka untuk berbuat begitu. Aku bahkan tidak ingin ikut mereka. Kau ada disana. Kau tahu itu. Merka memaksa ku.” (Ibid: 112-113) Jade‟s give expectation to Donna. Donna will give some explanation can help her conduct. Jade want three of scamp administered the law. But her friend Donna Dee give bad explanation, Donna angry about allegedly for Hutch, sha not want her boys friend came to jail because it. Jade angry with Donna, Jade fell die nothing any one person belife with it. “ Dia memang meronta-ronta di dalam mobil,” Donna Dee cepat- cepat menjelaskan.” Tapi anak lelaki itu cuma bercanda, kalain tahu, kan? Mereka menggoda Jade seperti mereka menggodaku dengan meninggalkan aku disana.” (Ibid: 115) Jade with her mother Velta is mother from Jade Sperry, Velta wants Jade have boys friend like Neal but Jade always confuses about Neal. Velta‟s always angry with her mom so her relation with mom nothing harmonies, but like a mother she always care with her son or daugther if they gets some problems.

Velta bored with her live until now, Velta bored with Jade because Jade is the trouble maker. Nenekmu tak sanggup menjalani hidupnya, jadi ia pergi melarikan diri. (Ibid: 676)
4.1.3. Mental Qualities of Jade Sperry from the Author’s Description Jade Sperry is the principled woman. She is stong woman, She have thinking about her planing, the planing to make Neal and his friends get the punishments about the accidents that make Jade broken. This is some struggle from the women to make new live. Jade with Dillon Burke He is the frustation man, his wife was die because he has enemy in his work pleace. He wants find new life with new people that make him can forget his old time. For long time Jade was keep him, Jade have some felling if he have function as a pathner to destroy Patchett family with GSS. Jade mengawasi Dillo Burke ketika lelaki itu di kawal keluar melalui pintu dan dibawa ke sebuah meja tempat dia menandatangani tanda terima pengembalian barang pribadinya. Ketika Burke sedang memakai arlojinya, sersan yang sedang piket mengatakan sesuatu padanya sehingga membuatnya menoleh. Dipandanginya Jade dengan sorot mata tajam yang membuat Jade gelisah, persis seperti ketika ia melihat laki-laki ini melalui teropong. ( Ibid: 388)

Jade is the perfect woman, so every people near with her must interested with her like Dillon. Dillon get motivation to Jade, for seven year ago Dillon never have motivation Jade is first woman after his bad dreams. Dilllon sampai pada kesimpulan itu setelah memikirkansegalanya masakmasak selama beberapa hari. Brengsek betul wanita itu! Jade Sperry berhasil memicu semangatnya untuk pertama kalinya dalam tujuh tahun terakhir ini. ( Ibid: 406) Dillon wants Jade explain her problem with him, Altough Jade be pressure he do not care. Dillon have some filling if she have make him the doll. Finally Jade tell her story about her scandal. “ Oke, ayo mulai.” “ Mulai apa?” “ Ya Tuhan,” maki Dillon kesal.” Masih mau main- main,ya?” “Ini permainanmu, bukan permainanku. Aku ingin pulang.” “Semenit yang lalu kau ingin bekerja.” “ Jangan ganggu aku!” “ Kalau begitu, mulailah berbicara.” Apa yang ingin kau ketahui?” ( Ibid: 571) Dillon is very down and shock about Jade story. Dillon not have mind if her story is about rapist. Jade very sad if she have remember her scandal with Neal and friends. Kata- kata itu terngiang- ngiang dalam benak Dillon saat ia memandangi Jade dengan perasaan shock hingga tidak bis aberkata apa- apa. Lagi- lagi Jade menutupi wajahnya dengan tangan. “ Mereka memerkosa aku,” ulang Jade lirih.” Mereka memerkosa aku.” ( Ibid: 572)

Finally Jade can forget her bad dream with Dillon. Her scandal was lost, her enemy Neal with his friends Lamar and Hutch had get law from God. Jade close her scandal full with love story from Dillon Burke. “ Jade merengkuh wajah Dillon yang dicintainya itu ke leher. Tangannya membelai-belai rambut Dillon, menatap matahari melalui air mata bahagia yang menggenagi matanaya, dan merasakan terpaan sinarnya yang hangat di bibirnya yang tersenyum. ( Ibid: 680) Jade Sperry ia the main character in the novel. She has a round character from the plain woman to resentfull woman. She does prove her virginity to her mother, Jade does frustations with it between love and prove. “Jade memandang Gary dari kaca mobil dan merasakan kehangatan menjalari hatinya, bercampur dengan perasaan resah. “ Mungkin itu bukan dosa. Mungkin sudah saatnya Gary dan aku berhenti mendengarkan kata-kata pendeta dan menuruti insting kami saja. Oh, entahlah,” erangnya.” Kami terus menerus membicarakannya, tapi itu hanya membuat kami semakin frustasi.” ( Ibid : 24) In her childhood she was got the serious problem, about her rapist from her friends. This problems is the source of her grudge. “ Jade senang bisa datang ke sini. Rasa benci membutuhkan energi yang cukup besar. Terkadang, kebenciannya pada tiga lelaki yang menyebabkan Gary bunuh diri begitu menguras tenaga, membuatnya letih. ( Ibid: 533)
