Chapter 3 Internship Activities This chapter discusses the role of a translator as a content aggregator in the mass media. It explans also about the activities of my internship, what I did during the internship, the problem that I faced, and the problem solving. A. Activities in General I got an internship as a content aggregator in Solopos.com team. Content aggregator is a reporter that gathers web content from different online sources to serve news for the readers. I got responsibility to produce sport news, especially international football news. I worked for about 8 hours from Monday to Saturday. Every day I had to produce four news at least. There were four topics; there are Lifestyles, Technology, Most popular and Sport. The other interns and I had to choose the topic based on our knowledge. Thus, as I know a little bit about football compared to the others, I was charged in international sport news. The sport news is more specific because I had to reproduce news from all aspects. I had to make news about the sport itself, the sport entertainment and the most popular of sport. Mostly, I reproduced international football news because the other sport field was held by HarianJogja.com. Thus, to avoid the same issue with other editors of HarianJogja.com, I made only international football news. Before I started the internship, I got training for about a week with the other interns. The other interns and I were accompanied by a senior editor from Solopos team named mister Faul. Mister Faul got responsibility to accompany me and the others during the training. For the first day, I got opportunity to meet all the staff of PT. Aksara Solopos. I got a tour with other interns to take a look at every single part of the offices. The tour was more special because the chief editor, mister Suwarmin, escorted us to go around the company. In the end of the tour, I got opportunity to join a daily meeting of daily newspaper Solopos team. Even though I got the internship as a content aggregator of Solopos.com team instead of Solopos team I was pleased because I got new knowledge and experiences that day. I watched closely how the meeting was going, how thoughtful the atmosphere of the meeting was, and how they chose news for the next day carefully. I got also a chance to introduce myself in front of all members of 9

Solopos team in the middle of their meeting. I was glad because they welcomed me and the others warmly. It felt like I really got a job and belonged to their team. Then, in the following day, I started the training. The senior editors and senior reporters lead the training alternately. The training was all about journalistic. I was trained to be a good reporter and the way to produce news. There were two sessions in each of training and an evaluation session in the end of the training every day. In every training, the other interns and I had to do some task. The training started in the afternoon around 01.00 P.M until late at night. Day 1- January 21, 2016: First session, I got to know the etiquettes of a reporter and I was taught to be a good reporter. A senior editor told me the duties as a reporter. There are three kinds of news that reporter has to produce, there were straight news, feature news, and soft news. The news contains main news, knowledge, and entertainment. The news has to be written with the words that were understandable for readers. I got also a task to review and evaluate a movie, the tittle is Shattered Glass. I had to evaluate the acts of the reporter in the movie and compared it with the etiquette of a reporter. Next, the chief editor of PT. Aksara Solopos led the session with the material about the history of Solopos, the structure organization of PT. Aksara Solopos, and I got also to know the company policy of PT. Aksara Solopos. At the end of the training, I got an evaluation from mister Faul about the first task. He asked about the result of evaluations. After that, he explained more detail about the meaning of the movie. He reminded me and the others about the etiquettes of reporter, and he gave us suggestion to watch the other movie about journalistic. At the end of the session, he told us about the other task that must be done in the next day. The task is more challenging because we had to produce news about event which happens around Soloraya. I had to choose one place and write news about it. Even though there was no significant issue, I was demanded to be able to write news. Day 2- January 22, 2016: Before I started the training, I visited fish and bird market of Surakarta called Pasar Burung dan Pasar Ikan Depok. I strolled around the market and tried to have conversation with the seller. I asked about the price and the species of the animal. After that, I tried to write feature news. I wrote about the condition and the atmosphere of the market. I tried to explain to the readers that Pasar

Burung dan Pasar Ikan Depok was different from others bird and fish market. Afterward, in the first session I was trained about the language and the style of Solopos news as their characteristics in producing news, such as the importance of the informants’ ages, not using numbers in the first of sentences of news, using the word Tiongkok instead of China and many more. Then, I was trained the technique of reporting and the process of writing news in second session. In the last session, mister Faul checked my task that I made in the morning. He evaluated my task and the others one by one. He gave a comment and told how the news should be. The printed news has limited character; there were 200 words until 300 words per news. He told us that news had to contain five senses, reporters has to be able to explain what they see, what they feel, what they hear, what they smell, and what they taste. He told us also about how to choose a good issue. Thus, at the end of the training mister Faul gave us two tasks for the following day. First was producing news by interviewing an informant and the second one was translating international news. Considering the deadline of the news, the other interns and I decided to visit Pasar Gede after the training. We decided to write news about Pasar Gede as there was a special event. The streets around Pasar Gede were decorated with thousands Lampions during Lunar Year. We visited Pasar Gede around 09.00 PM but unfortunately the event had not been ready yet. There was no flame in the Lampions, nevertheless as a reporter I had to able to write news no matter the conditions is. Then, the other interns and I keep strolling to find an informant. Even though the event has not started yet but there were several visitors from teenagers until adults. Then, the other interns and I saw a family and gave an interview about the event. Day 3- January 23, 2016: First session, I was trained from senior editor who in charges to write Soloraya news. She explained about how the reporter works, how to produce news, how to collect information, and how to interview an informant. She insisted that the identity of the informant is really important, because information that she or he provides must be correct. Then in second session, I was trained from senior editor who in charges about International news. She explained about translation briefly. Her explanation was similar to the material that I got in translation class in English Diploma Program. The senior editor checked all the interns’ translation task including mine. The entire translation task was similar because we only translate it directly. The news was about politic issue, that is Japan lifts nuclear sanctions on Iran. She told me

and the others that as a reporter we should know about all different issues in every aspect. However, if we do not know about some news we have to learn and understand it first before reproducing the news. She insisted that as a content aggregator, we cannot translate news from some website randomly. We have also to follow the policy in every website. In the end of the training, mister Faul checked my assignment and the others’. He said the news that we wrote has no five senses. He insisted us to look at different aspect such as not only about the event but also the effect of the event for vendors around Pasar Gede. He explained about the importance of the identity of the informants’ that should be known by reporters. We have to ask their complete name, age, address, and the phone number. For the following training, the other interns and I have to translate about international football news. Day 4- January 25, 2016: That was the last session I was trained in printed news division. The senior editor asked me and the others on the subject of sport. He asked about the kind of sport that we like. We had different answers to the question. I was the only one who loved international football so he asked me about football news briefly. We had a little conversation about international football especially my favorite football club, Chelsea. The senior editor checked also my translation. The task was about Liverpool Owner and Sponsor raised Suarez concerns. He told us story about some reporters that got a chance to write news about World Cup in Brazil live. Then, he explained about how Solopos gets all sport news. Day 5- January 26, 2016: After we finished the training for the printed news, I was trained about the etiquette of online media, the characteristics of online news, and styles of Bisnis Indonesia Group. I was trained by one of the editors of Solopos.com. He told us the difference between printed newspaper and online newspaper. He explained about a good content aggregator, the duty as a content aggregator, and how to be a good content aggregator. He taught us that the news has to contain the key words that were easy to catch by Search Engine Optimazion (SEO) and the words that are possible to write by the readers when they search some news. He insisted that the title must be interesting and make the readers curious, so they are attracted to read it. To avoid the spelling mistake, the senior editor tested us about the spelling Indonesian words also. Day 6- January 27, 2016: The last day of the training, I was taught how to upload the news in Solopos.com newsroom, which is an email group of Bisnis Indonesia Group.

I was also trained about how the website works and about the timing of uploading news every day. He insisted us to make news at least four per day. He taught us how to upload news to newsroom. We had to upload the news with a photo to make the news are more clear. After the training finished, I did my job as content aggregator directly in the following day. All the things that I have learnt in the training were used in my internship day. There were kinds of news that made me use several ways to write the news in my internship activities.
B. Producing News by Translating English Sources Basically, I reproduced a news by translating the news from English sources. I gathered all the information from internet. At first, I searched the keyword ―football‖ to see the hot issues. Then, I followed the English sources such as Reuters, BBC, Football Italia, Bundesliga, Dailymail, The Guardian, and others. I had to use trusty websites and, I had to follow the rules by avoiding several prohibited websites. When reproducing the news, I gathered information from several websites. I read it and understand the news carefully. Then, I chose the website that provided adequate information which later would be translated into Indonesian with my own words. During the process, I cannot just translate and rewrite the text. However, I was demanded to explain the background of the news and give additional information to make the readers get information more instead the main news. At my first day, I translated and rewrote three news’ from English sources. I had to search the news by myself with my own ability. I had to decide what news that I should translate because football has many clubs which participate in many divisions from different countries. I had to choose the important news, the great one that can attract the reader to read it. My evaluator directed me by telling me which club that get much attention. Then, he asked me to make news about Sir Alex Cari Hiburan di Etihad as my first job. At first, I was confused about which website I should refer to because the news came from different websites and each of their websites has their own style when reported it. Then I chose the easy one and translated it into Indonesian. Next, I uploaded to an email that connected to a newsroom directly. In the newsroom, all of Bisnis Indonesia Group members could look and take the news that they would upload to their websites. Before I started my second news, the Executive Editor of Solopos.com

called me and told me the lack of my news. She told me to add the background story and more additional information. I should also write the sources of my news. I had to make up my news for about three times to got an approval from the Executive Editor. The other news was also about international football. In the following day after I had no problem about mentioning the background information and additional information, I tried to reproduce news from different sport field. I tried to reproduce news about tennis. The news was about Pidato Haru Andy Murray Untuk Sang Istri. It was my first time to read news about tennis because I never watched or knew about tennis before. I tried to understand and reproduce the news only by the main news. Yet, I got called again by the Executive Editor because I missed some parts in the news that I had written. She told me that my news was really lacked of information. There was no background information and no additional information. There was another meaning beside the main news. I had to rewrite and add my knowledge about tennis such as the background life of Andy Murray and about the tennis competition. My evaluator helped me also. He told me the information about tennis and directed me to reproduce it by editing my news. After I finished reproducing the news, I read my news two or three times to make sure that there was nothing wrong. Thus, I edited it again. Before I sent the news to newsroom, I completed my news by adding a tag, that was such a welcoming text after the title, then I added the key words in the bottom of the text and I put the photo of the news. I finished my duty when the news was sent to the newsroom. Later, my evaluator who also charged in sport news as an editor would edit my news and posted it in Solopos.com website regularly for every news that I sent to the newsroom.

C. Producing News by Monitoring Videos The second way to produce news was by monitoring videos. This was a really challenging way because I did not simply reproduce news by translating some English sources. I took the videos from Youtube then I would make some interesting news by monitoring the videos. Sometimes I got the information from the other websites but I had also to make the news by my own words. I made the news by the video that was unique, for example a video that showed incredible goal or the video that showed activities of the popular players. The first step that I had to do was watching the video from the begining until the end. After I watched and understood about the videos, I had to explain what the video was about by using my own words. I had to explain it step by step in detail. Even though I was monitoring video, it does not mean that I was not doing a translation activity. I had also to provide the additional information about the video. Therefore, I read English sources to complete my news. I gave the additional information about the player such as the age, the career record, and others. After I finished reproducing the news, the last process would be held by the sport editor as usual.

D. Producing News by Monitoring Social Media The third way to reproduce news was by monitoring social media. This was my favorite way to produce news because this was about entertainment news of football. Sometimes I got an issue not only from English sources but also by looking at social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or others. The social media that I used mostly was Twitter because it has trending topic worldwide, so I would only follow the one of the trendings and made the news. Then, I looked also Instagram because it was a popular social media that is used by famous football players. The players usually post photos of their daily activities there, so I could make the news from the photo that they posted. Sometimes I would look at some official personal accounts such as Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, John Terry, and other players intentionally. I would monitor their social media then wrote about their postings with the caption and the photos as a proof. Then, I described all the comments of their fans or their haters, and also some sentences of additional information to make my news complete and more interesting. Then, as usual the sport editor would edit my text to make it flawless.

Solopos.com, SOLO – Ada-ada saja cara yang dilakukan pemain muda Bayern Munchen, Mario Gotze, untuk menikmati waktu senggangnya. Setelah pulih dari cedera pemain Jerman itu sudah mulai kembali mengikuti sesi latihan bersama Bayern Mucnchen. Seperti yang diketahui, Mario tidak dapat memperkuat Munchen sejak Oktober 2015 lalu karena cedera otot tendon yang ia dapatkan kala membela negaranya di kualifikasi Piala Eropa 2016. E. Making A Long News About Sport as Additional Task In the end of the internship we had to make long news about some topics. The long news contains of a detailed discussion from the beginning until the end about an issue, so the reader does not need to open different pages because they can get all the information in one news. The purpose of the long news is to improve the knowledge of the reader. The long news that I wrote was all about European Championship 2016 or known as EURO. I chose the topic about Euro because this event was held in June 10th to July 10th in 2016. In my opinion, this topic would affect the readers, so they wanted and needed to read it as a preface for the event. I made two long news, there are Menanti Euro 2016 and Menengok Sejarah dan Trofi Euro. The contents of Menanti Euro 2016 was all about Euro itself, such as the logo, slogan, the places, the schedule of the matches, the mascot, and the group. Whereas, the contents of Menengok Kembali Sejarah dan Trofi Euro was the history about the competition, including the creator, the first match, and also the history of the trophy that was named from the creator. I made the news by gathering several English Sources news. I translated them one by one and made the several news into one long news.
F. Problems during Internship During the internship, I faced problems which made me improve my skills by thinking of how to solve the problems.There are:

The lack of vocabularies. The biggest problem when I reproduced news by translating English source was vocabularies. Because I was lack of vocabularies, it made the process of reproducing news waste lots of times. Besides, the style of British English news was a little bit difficult for me. The words that they used made me a little bit confused because I was more familiar with the American English news. To solve the problem, when I found difficult words, I looked up in internet or looked at online British English dictionary, Oxford, to make sure about the meaning. I read also the issue in different websites to avoid mistakes, get more information about the issue, and increase my knowledge. 1. The issue of news. Before reproducing the news, the biggest problem is choosing the issue. There were so many issues which were released in different websites, such as the careers of the players, the careers of the managers, the injuries of the players, the transfer of the players and managers, the results of the match, the entertainment news about sport, social media of the players, most popular, and others. Besides, there are a lot of players, clubs, divisions, leagues, and competitions from different countries that make the problem become bigger. Then, to solve the problem I tried to be fair and tried to reproduce news about football from different divisions and countries. There are Barclays Premiere League in England, Bundesliga in Germany, La Liga in Spain, and one of domestic league in Italy, known as Serie A. I chose those four leagues by considering the amount of the fans in each club fansite. The fansite showed that they were the biggest competitions that had a lot of fans in Indonesia. 2. The double of news issue. I ever got the same news with the editor, even though it only happened two or three times. I always produce news that was being a trending topic. Sometimes when I wrote a hot issue, I could not avoid making the same issue with my editor. To solve the problem, I brought my laptop to office and finished my work without disturbing the other editors. 5. The length of the news. The news cannot be too long or too short. I could not make the news either too short or too long. Sometimes if the news is too short, it would make the reader more confused. Otherwise, if the news is too long, it would make the readers bored easily. Therefore, to solve the problem I would make news for about 250 until 500 words as average. If the sources were too short, I would give the additional information to make it clear. However, if the news source was too long, I would focus to the main news and made it simple. 6. The period of the news. I had to reproduce fresh news every day and I could not make news that was outdated. The period of the news has to be within one or two days after the news was released, but actually the case was the time zone of each country. If I lost a chance to reproduce some issue that was popular on time, I would keep monitoring the development of the issue. Then, I would make the continuance of the news by mentioning the background of the issue until the new update.
