Advisor: (I) Drs. Suprihadi, M.Pd., (II) Junaidi, S.Pd, M.Pd., Key Words: Summarizing Strategy and Reading Comprehension Reading is an important skill in learning English. In MA Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan Batealit Jepara, especially in the eleventh grade, most of them stated that reading is long and boring activity. However the teachers only focused in materials from handbook, the teacher never use any teaching media who supported his teaching and learning process also when he give explanation related to the material he only give brief explanation. This kind of situation makes students have low comprehension in reading comprehension especially on hortatory exposition text. the result of students’s reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text test is still unsatisfactory and many students get low score. In this case the teacher should use appropriate strategy to make the students more interest and understand well. Summarizing Strategy is one of alternative strategy that can be used by the English teacher to teach reading comprehension especially on hortatory exposition text . Hopefully, it can increase the students’ reading comprehension. This research is an experimental research used one group with pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was all of the eleventh grade students of MAMiftahul Huda RaguklampitanBatealit Jepara in academic Year 2014/2015 by using summarizing strategy. The number of sample is 13 students which are taken by cluster randomly from the eleventh grade students. The writer took eleventh grade students as a single class as the sample. Test is used as the instrument of this research. There are pre-test and post-test to get the score and to know the data before and after being taught by using summarizing strategy. From these score can be known wheter there is or no significant different between the reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text ofeleventh grade students of MAMiftahul Huda RaguklampitanBatealit Jepara in academic Year 2014/2015 before and after taught by using summarizing strategy. The result of this research can be seen from the mean of the pre-test is 55.53, standard deviation is 7.21. While the mean of post-test is 75.84, standard deviation is 11.21 Hypothesis testing in the level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom (df)12, the t-obtained (t0) is – 1.000 and t-table (tt) is 2.179, so the tobtained falls in the critical region. Therefore, the researcher concludes that there is a significant difference betweenthe reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text of eleventh grade students of MAMiftahul Huda ix
RaguklampitanBatealit Jepara in academic Year 2014/2015 before and after by using summarizing strategy. From the facts above, the writer suggests the English teacher to give summarizing strategy in every reading activity inside the classroom or outside the classroom. The writer also suggests students to do reading activity when they are in the school, at home or everywhere. And for the further teacher, the writer suggests to combine this strategy with the other media or method to make more innovations in teaching reading comprehension.

Suprihadi, M.Pd (II) Junaidi, S.Pd, M.Pd., Kata Kunci: Strategi meringkasdan Pemahaman membaca Pemehaman membaca adalah kemampuan yang penting dalam mempelajari bahasa inggris. Di MA Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan Batealit Jepara, khususnya di kelas XI, kebanyakan siswa kelas sebelas mengatakan bahwa membaca merupakan kegitan yang panjang dan membosankan yang membuat mereka bosan .Guru hanya fokus pada materi yang ada di buku paket, guru tidak pernah menggunakan beberapa media atau strategy pembelajaran yang mendukung pengajarannya dan proses pembelajaran serta ketika dia memberikan penjelasan mengenai materi dia hanya member penjelasan singkat.situasi seperti ini hanya membuat siswa kurang memahami dalam pemahaman membaca khususnya teks
hortatory exposition. Tetapi Hasil dari tingkat pemahaman membaca teks hortatory exposition text masih kurang memuaskandan banyak siswa yang mendapat nilai rendah. Pada kasus ini guru seharusnya menggunekan strategy yang cocok untuk membuat siswa lebih tertarik dan memahaminya dengan baik. Strategy meringkas merupakan salah satu jalan keluar yang dapat di gunakan oleh guru bahasa inggris untuk mengajar pemahaman membaca khususnya untuk teks hortatory exposition. Harapannya itu dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen menggunakan satu kelompok dengan menggunakan tes awal dan tes akhir. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas sebelas Ma Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan Batealit Jepara Tahun Ajaran 2014/2015 dengan menggunakan strategi meringkas. Jumlah sampel 13 siswa yang mana di ambil dengan cara claster random sampling dari kelas sebelas. Penulis mengambil kelas sebelas sebagai kelas tunggal sebagai sampel. Tes digunakan sebagai alat dari penelitian ini. Ada tes awal dan tes akhir untuk menggunaka nilai dan untuk mengetahui data sebelum dan sesudah di ajar menggunakan strategi meringkas. Dari nilai tersebut dapat di ketahui apakah ada perbedaan signifikan terhadap kemampuan membaca teks hortatory exposition text siswa kelas sebelas MA Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan Batealit Jepara tahun ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan setelah diajar menggunakan strategi meringkas. Hasil dari penelitian dapat dilihat dari nilai rata-rata tes awal adalah 55.53, standar deviasinya dalah 7.21. sementara nilai rata-rata tes akhirnya adalah 75.84, standar deviasinya 11.21 pengujian hipotesis awalnya di level signifikasi 0.05 dan tingkat kebebasan (df) 12, t-obtained (to) -1.000 dan t-table jatuh pada

daerah kritis. Maka penelitian disimpulkan bahwa ada ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca membaca teks hortatory eksposisi siswa kelas sebelas MA Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan Batealit Jepara tahun ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah di ajar menggunakan strategi meringkas. Dari fakta di atas penulis menyarankan kepada Guru Bahasa Inggris untuk memberikan strategi meringkas pada setiap aktivitas didalam kelas maupun diluar kelas. Penulis juga memberikan saran kepada siswa ketika melakukan aktifitas membaca di dalam kelas, di rumah atau dimana-mana. Dan untuk Guru, penulis menyarankan untuk mengkobinasikan strategi ini dengan media-media yang lain atau metode-metode yang lain untuk membuat inovasi-inovasi dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca.
