ABSTRACT
Adi Ardayani, C1302001. An Analysis of the Translation Quality of Hagrid’s Dialogues in the Novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” by J.K. Rowling, into Indonesian “Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban” by Listiana Srisanti. Thesis. Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas Maret University. Surakarta. 2007.
This research focuses on examine how the Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” are translated into Indonesian in “Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban” in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. It is a descriptive qualitative method using the technique of collecting, classifying the data, followed by drawing conclusion based on the data analysis. The source of data is taken from the novel “Harry Potter and he Prisoner of Azkaban” and its translation “Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban”. The researcher found 92 data of Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel. In this research, purposive sampling was employed. The researcher is collecting and coding the data, determining the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the Hagrid’s dialogues. The researcher was also assisted by raters who completed the questionnaires of the three problems and it is followed by analyzing the data and drawing conclusion. Derived from data analysis, on the accuracy level Rater 1 found 40 (44%) data to be accurate, Rater 2 decided 32 (35%) of the data are accurate, and Rater 3 found 21 (23%) data to be accurate. On the acceptability level, Rater 1 decided 30 (33%) of the data are acceptable, Rater 2 found 54 (59%) data to be acceptable, and Rater 3 found 45 (49%) of the data are acceptable. Meanwhile in readability level, Rater 1 decided 31 (34%) of the data as the readable translation, Rater 2 decided 26 (29%) of the data to be readable scale, Rater 3 found 31 (34%) of data are readable scale, and Rater 4 found 44 (48%) data to readable. Overall, the accuracy level in the average percentage for accurate scale is more than 70% very accurate. In the acceptability level, more than 50% data are acceptable for the raters. In the readability level, there are more than 65% of the data comprehensible by the target readers. The result of this research can be used as an additional subject in improving the translator’s ability in translation. It also can be used as a supporting material in developing the ability of English Department students in analyzing quality of translation. Other researcher also can apply as a guide to carry out other studies about Quality Assessment.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
A. Research Background Language is an important media of communication. Without language, no activities will process well since they require a language as their medium. By using it, human can get information through language. Since human beings are social creatures, they have a tendency to live among their society. Kamil (1991:7) states that “Language as a communication element between individual and society, or even among people in many countries will be used to convey idea and feeling of a person.” There are many languages in the world. Every nation has its own language which is different from one another. People from different nations will not be able to communicate each other because they speak in different languages. One of the languages is English. Nowadays, it seems that a lot of books and information as the products of knowledge have flooded in our country. Unfortunately, many kinds of scientific books, social books, literary books, and the others are written in foreign languages, mainly in English. One of the effective ways of understanding the contents of those books is by translating them into Indonesian. Translation is a crucial work. Translation is very important way for people to know the message the books. Therefore, Indonesian people can get information and knowledge of the source language (SL) especially in English by
xiv
reading its translation in their own language. Many efforts have been made to translate books that are written in English into Indonesian. In our country, translation develops well enough. It is proved by the spread of more and more translation which are not only restricted to science and technology but also to the literary works. Various English novels like detective stories, comics, love stories, and others are already translated widely into Indonesian, especially best seller or those with high reputation. The example is the novel of Harry Potter which will be researched by the researcher. This novel is one of the best sellers in Indonesia and many people have read it. Many books have been translated into Indonesian by. As a translator, he has an important role in translation. Unfortunately, not all people master or understand English. To do translation, professional people are needed. However, translating is not a simple job, because the translator has to master both languages (SL and TL). The translator has to maintain the atmosphere, the beauty of work as well as the expression of the writer. The translator must transfer the expression, which is written from SL into TL without decreasing the message of SL text because a translator is a mediator between the writer and the readers of TL. There are two important things that have to be observed by a translator as stated by Susan Bassnet: Translation involves the rendering of source language (SL) text into the target language (TL) so as to ensure that (1) the surface meaning of the two will be approximately similar and (2) the structures of the SL will be preserved as closely as possible but not so closely that the TL structures will be seriously distorted. (1991:2).
xv
From the statement above, it is clear that a translator must be responsible to produce a good result. In brief, a translator must make the readers get the same messages, ideas, and thoughts in TL equal to SL. In translating literary works, a translator will find some difficulties, like the use of language style and the beauty of the sentences. A translator must be able to create beautiful sentences in order that readers can enjoy and accept the meaning of the literary works. The explanation above is one of the challenges which should be faced by the translators. As a translator, he should remember that most of the literary works are read for pleasure and relaxation. A translation also has relationship with the language variation. In the novel of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the writer finds two persons who have different dialogues from one another. They are Stanley as a conductor of Knight Bus and Hagrid as a gamekeeper in Hogward’s school. They like to speak by making the word in short. Here are the examples of their dialogues: Stanley : Ear about that ‘Arry Potter? Blew up ‘is Aunt! We ‘ad ‘im ‘ere on the Knight Bus, di’n’t we, Ern? ‘E was tryin’ to run for it …. : Sudah dengar tentang ‘Arry Potter? Dia menngelembungkan bibinya. Dia naik bis Ksatria ini, iya kan, Ern? Dia mencoba melarikan diri…. Hagrid : ‘I’m not blamin’ yeh!’ Gawd knows yeh’ve had enough ter be gettin’ on with. I’ve seen yeh practisin’ Quidditch ev’ry hour o’the day an’night – but I gotta tell yeh, I thought you two’d value yer friend more’n broomsticks or rat. Tha’s all. : Aku tidak salahkan kau ! Aku tahu kau sibuk sekali. Aku lihat kau latihan Quidditch sepanjang hari dan malam – tapi aku harus bilang
xvi
kalian, aku kira kalian berdua akan hargai teman kalian lebih daripada sapu atau tikus. Cuma itu. The example above shows the language variation between Hagrid and Stanley. In this thesis, the writer does not want to analyze two of them, but the writer only analyzes the dialogues of Hagrid. In accordance with the explanation above, the researcher is interested to explore how the translator translates Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling into Indonesian, particularly in terms of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Hence, the writer writes the thesis entitled: “AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION QUALITY OF HAGRID’S DIALOGUES IN THE NOVEL OF “HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN” BY J.K ROWLING, INTO INDONESIAN “HARRY POTTER DAN TAWANAN AZKABAN” BY LISTIANA SRISANTI.”
B. Research Limitation To avoid the expansion of the research, the researcher focuses on a specific thing. The researcher only analyzes Hagrid’s dialogue in the novel of Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling. The research also examines the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the translation.
C. Problem Statements The researcher formulates the problem of the research as follows: 1. How is the accuracy of Hagrid’s dialogue translation? 2. How is the acceptability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation? 3. How is the readability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation?
xvii
D. Research Objectives As stated in the problem statements, the writer is intended: 1. To know the accuracy of the Hagrid’s dialogues translation in terms of context. 2. To know the acceptability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation. 3. To find out whether the Hagrid’s dialogues translation are readable for the target readers.
E. Research Benefit It is hoped that the research will give benefit to: 1. Translator The result of the research can be used as an additional subject matter in improving the translator’s ability in translation. 2. The English Department Students The result of the research can be used as a supporting material in developing the ability of English Department students in analyzing quality of a translation. 3. Other Researchers The result of the research can be applied as a guide to carry out other studies about translation Quality Assessment.

CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW
A. Translation
Definition
of
Many translation experts give different definitions of translation. It shows that translation get attention from a lot of people because it has an important role to help people to communicate with the other people. Translation generally is defined as substituting one text into another one in different language. To support this statement there are a lot of definitions of translation. Brislin states: Translation is the general term referring to the transfer of thoughts and idea from one language (source) to another (target), whether the languages are in written or oral form; whether the languages have established orthographies or do not have such standardization or whether one or both languages is based on signs, as with sign languages of the deaf. (1976:1) From the statement above, Brislin does not give a limitation of definition of translation. Translation is transferring thoughts and idea from one language into another language. It can be spoken or written, or just a sign. Translation generally is defined as the process of transferring message from text of SL to TL, and it is known that the important thing in translation is looking for the equivalent of meaning, as Nida says: “Translating consists in producing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent to the message of the SL, first in meaning and secondly in style.” (1975: 33) From the definition above, we can conclude that translation is a process of transferring the idea, thought, or message from one language (SL) to another language (TL) with closest natural equivalent. Meanwhile, Bell mentions the definition of translation as follows: “Translation is the expression in another language (or TL) of what has been expressed in another, source language, preserving semantic and stylistic equivalences.” (1991:p.5). The definition explains that the equivalence of meaning and style are very important. A translator should maintain the message and also the style of the SL.
xx
As the example, if the SL text is a medical text, the translation should use the medical style too.
B. Principles of Translation A translator should consider some principle matters related to translation to produce a quality translation. Therefore, a translator should know the definition of a good translation or a quality translation. To produce a quality translation, the translator should consider some principles of translation. Tytler (in Nida, 1964:19) clarifies that there are three principles of translation: 1. The translation should give a complete transcript of the idea of the original work. 2. The style and manner of writing should be of the same character with that of the original. 3. The translation should have all these ease of the original compositions. Based on the principles above, the translation should contain all message of source text (ST) without changing the style of the original. The target readers will understand the translation like the original because the meaning of the original text is not changed. Related to the principles of translation, Larson gives three categories for the best translation: The best translation is the one which (a) It uses the normal language forms of the receptor language, (b) communicates, as much as possible, to the receptor speakers the same meaning that was understood by the speakers of the source language, and (c) maintains the dynamics of the original source language text. (1984:6)
xxi
Larson emphasizes that in communicating the message of ST, the translation should use the common words and forms of the receptor language so that the readers can understand the message easily. Maintaining the dynamics of the original ST means that the translation is produced as interesting as the source text. Dollet (in Bassnet, 1980:54) gives five qualifications for the translator: 1. A translator must fully understand the sense and the meaning of the original author, although he is at liberty to clarify obscurities. 2. The translator should have a perfect knowledge of both SL and TL. 3. The translator should avoid word-for-word renderings. 4. The translator should use forms of speech in common use. 5. The translator should choose and order words appropriately to produce the correct tone. The translator should understand the whole meaning of the source text before translating. It is important because the translator has to transfer the meaning of source text (ST) correctly, without changing the style or sense of the ST. The translator must have a lot of knowledge of both SL and TL. Besides, the translator should consider who the target readers are. It is worth considering because the goal of the translation is to help people in understanding the message of another language. Therefore, the translator also should be able to give sense of the original text in his translation so that the target readers are unaware that they read a translation.
xxii
C. Types of Translation 1. Word-for-word translation Catford states: “Word-for-word translation generally means what its says: i.e. is essentially rank-bound at word-rank (but may include some morphememorpheme equivalences)” (1974:25). In word-for-word translation, the translator only transfers the meaning of every word from SL to TL without paying any attention to the structure of TL. This type of translation can only be applied on sentences of SL which have the same structures as the TL.
2. Free Translation Catford defines free translation as follows: “A free translation is always unbounded – equivalences shunt up and down the rank scale, but tend to be at the higher rank – sometimes between larger units than the sentence.” (1974:25) In free translation, the translator is free to translate the text without changing the idea and the message from the SL into the TL. Its aims are to make the content of the SL more understandable by the reader when they read the text in TL form. In free translation, the translator must have the ability to understand all the sentences in one paragraph or even one discourse as a whole in order to avoid misunderstanding the meaning of the material in the TL.
xxiii
3. Literal translation Literal translation lies between word-for-word translation and free translation. The translator translates the text by using word-for-word translation and then some parts are changed in conformity with the grammatical system of the TL. According to Catford: Literal translation lies between these extremes; it may start, as it were, from a word-for-word translation, but make changes in conformity with the TL grammar (i.e. inserting additional words, changing structure at any rank, etc); this may make it a group-group or clause-clause translation. (1974:25)
D. Process of Translation Translating a text is a complex thing and consists of a series activity that constitutes a process. Nida offers some steps which can be used by the translator: 1) analysis, 2) transferring, 3) restructuring. The scheme of the process of translation is as follows:
SOURCE LANGUAGE TEXT
RECEPTOR LANGUAGE TRANSLATION
ANALYSIS
RESTRUCTURING TRANSFER (1975:80)
1. Analysis Analysis of the source language text is the first step for the translator in translating a text. In translation, the translator should have knowledge of
xxiv
both SL and TL. The knowledge consists of linguistic and socio-cultural aspects. Moreover, Nida said that: The processes of analysis are, however, relatively complex, for they involve at least three different sets of features: (1) the grammatical relationship between constituent parts, (2) the referential meanings of the semantic units, and (3) the connotative values of the grammatical structures and the semantic unit.” (1975:80)
2. Transfer In this phase, the translator starts to translate the SL message into TL. The analyzed material is transferred in the mind of translator from language A to language B. In other words, it is a thinking process of the translator in transferring source message to the receptor. The translator should find the right equivalence for words, phrases, clauses, and sentences of the SL into TL.
3. Restructuring It is the final phase of the process of translation. In this phase, the translator makes some correction and completes the translation. The transferred material is restructured in order to make the final message fully acceptable in the receptor language.
E. Problems in Translation In translating a text, the translator often faces some problems such as different system of SL and TL, semantics and stylistic complexity, translator’s competence, and quality of the text. Nababan states that:
xxv
“Kesulitan-kesulitan yang kerap timbul dalam praktek menerjemahkan, yang disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, seperti perbedaan system bahasa sumber dengan system bahasa sasaran, perbedaan tingkat kemampuan penerjemah dan tingkat kualitas tulisan bahasa sumber.”(1999:55)
Those factors above will be discussed further bellow: 1. The different system of the SL and TL Every language in this world has its own system, either in terms of syntactical, lexical, or morphological structure. Nababan stated that, “Akan tetapi, adalah kenyataan bahwa tidak ada satu pun bahasa yang mempunyai sistem yang sama, baik ditinjau dari sudut struktur sintaksis, leksikal, dan morfem.” (1999:55)
2. The Semantics and Stylistics Complexity Each nation surely has a different language, as a part of cultural expressions. Semantic complexity has a strong relation to the socio-cultural background of the speaker of the language. A lot of words of one language do not have equivalence in another language. Stylistic complexity also becomes one of the difficulty factors in translation. Every text has different style and the translator should be able to express the same style in the TL. Literary text, like poem, prose, and drama will be expressed by a certain style and it is different from expressing scientific text. The language style between SL and TL are different because both languages have different cultural background and system.
3. The Translator’s Competence
xxvi
The capability of the translators in translating a text is different from one another. Nababan says, “…. si penerjemah adalah pelaku utama dalam proses penerjemahan, tingkat kemampuannya menjadi faktor penentu berhasil tidaknya penerjemahan itu dilakukan” (1999:59). A translator with high competence can solve the problems in translation easily. Therefore, the translator should have multi component communicative competence consisting of grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence, strategic competence, and transfer competence. (Neubert in Nababan, 2003:412) On the contrary, a beginner with limited competence and experience will get many problems. It is not enough for the translator just to be fluent or to have knowledge of language. He should have a good knowledge of the languages and sufficient experience in translating practice.
4. The Quality of the SL Text The quality of the ST influences the translator’s activity in creating a translation. The low quality of the text will be a problem for the translator because he will get difficulties to understand the text. The low quality of the ST is caused by the grammatical error, ambiguous sentence, etc. Moreover, Nababan states that: Pesan yang terkandung dalam bahasa sumber akan sulit ditangkap atau dipahami apabila kualitas teks tersebut tidak baik, seperti gramatikanya tidak benar, kalimat taksa, pengungkapan idenya tidak runtut, banyak kesalahan ejaan dan fungtuasi, dan lain sebagainya. (1999:60)
F. Quality Assessment of Translation
xxvii
Assessment of translation is important thing to do, because the result of the assessment shows the quality of translation. Assessing of translation quality is involved in translation criticism. According to Newmark, translation criticism is an essential link between translation theory and its practice; it also an enjoyable and instructive exercise, particularly if you are criticizing someone else’s translation or, even better, two or more translation of the same text. (1998:184) Newmark (1998) claims that by the translation assessment, a translator can improve the capability in translation because he/she will learn from the mistakes in the previous translation and revise them in the next translation. Secondly, a translator will enlarge the knowledge about the Source Language ( SL ) and Target Language ( TL ) that he/she will learn more about both languages to make an acceptable translation in TL without leaving the norms of the SL. Thirdly, an assessment of translation will finally formulate a guideline to decide whether a translation is good or not. Machali (2000:108) explains that a translation assessment is very important because of two reasons i.e. 1) to make a dialectical relationship between theoritical and practical translation; and 2) to maintain a criteria and standardization in assessing ranslation competition, especially in assessing some TL versions translated from the same SL. Here, a translation assessment is very important to find out whether a translator has applied the theory of translation he/she received. Larson ( 1984 ) explains that a translation should be checked for three main reasons as follows:
xxviii
1. Accuracy. It is about the meaning or message of ST (Source Text ) that should be fully transferred into TT ( Target Text ) without any ommissions. 2. Clarity. The translation should be communicative to the people using it. The forms of languages used should make the message of the ST easy to be understood. 3. Naturalness. A translation should not only be accurate and communicative but also be natural in the receptor language. In this way, the translation is checked whether the grammatical forms are normally used in Target Language. The composition of the translation should be natural and original in the receptor language. In line with Larson, Nababan (1999:86) mentions that assessment of quality in translation focuses on three main points i.e. 1) the accuracy of transferring message; 2) the appropriateness in expressing the message in TL; and 3) the naturalness of the translation. Based on the explanation, the researcher decides to analyze the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability of the Source Text (ST) as well as the Target Text (TT). In term of accuracy, the ST will be analyzed whether the translation is accurate based on the message and the meaning. In the acceptability analysis, the translation is analyzed whether it conforms to the grammar, norm, and culture of the target language. Meanwhile, the readability analysis is analyzed whether the target readers can understand the translation.
xxix
G. Accuracy According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (1995:9), accuracy is the state of being correct or exact and without error, especially as a result of careful effort. The accuracy of transferring message is an important part in translation. Accuracy is one of the factors, which determine the quality of translation. Mustakim (1994:42) states that to deliver an idea and thought accurately, a language user should concern some criteria such as the accuracy of the message. The accuracy of the word choice deals with the ability to choose the right words in transferring the idea accurately. The accurate choice of words will make an acceptable idea to the readers or listeners. It means that the ideas or messages delivered by the writer are equivalent with the ideas accepted by the readers. “Accuracy, is no doubt an important aim in translation, but it is also important to bear in mind that the use of commond target-language patterns which are familiar to the reader plays an important role in keeping the communicationchaneel open.” ( Baker, 1992: 57 ) Basically, accuracy is related to choose the correct words in order to reveal the same idea in TL. It is very important to choose the correct word because if the translator is wrong to choose the word, the text will not be accurate. In choosing the right word, it should consider some factors, such as, the target readers, context of the text, and socio-cultural condition. Specifically Nababan stated, “An evaluation of the accuracy of the translation at the sentential level is intended to find out whether the content of the
xxx
source language sentences are accurately rendered into the TL sentences.” (2004:130) Nagao, Tsuiji and Nakamura in Nababan (2004: 90-91) also give the instrument for accuracy of translation as shown bellow: 1. The content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. The translated sentence is clear to the evaluator and no rewriting is needed. 2. The content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the source sentence. The translated sentence can be clearly understood by the evaluator, but some rewriting and some change in the word order are needed. 3. The content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. There are some problems with the choice of lexical items and with the relationship between phrase, clause, and sentence element. 4. The source sentence is not translated at all into the target sentence, i.e. it is omitted or deleted. In other word, it can be said that accuracy is a kind of source-textoriented approach to translation. A translation is considered to be accurate if it conveys the meaning of the SL to the TL correctly without seeing the way of the translator transfer the message to the target language. Accurate translation means the translation is correct and appropriate.
H. Acceptability
xxxi
In the present study, there are changes in approaches of translation, from the notion of source-text-oriented approach into one target-text-oriented approach which clearly takes the target system and cultures as the starting point. Conversely, when translating is reader-centered, the authorship is far less important than the nature of the text itself. And its range of possible meaning is still presets although priority is accorded to aiming at particular kinds of reader response. (Hatim, 1994:10) Concerning the reader-centered approach in translation, Toury points out that, “A translation belongs primarily to the target literary system. Every translation occupies a position between the two poles of adequacy or adherence to the norms (both linguistic and textual) of the source system and acceptability or adherence of those of the target system.” (in Dewi, 2000:23). Further, he suggests that the acceptability of a translation is determined by its faithfulness to the linguistic and literary norms of the target system (or section of it, such as genre or sub-genre). Even though Toury’s notion of acceptability is part of an approach to literary translation, it is relevant to the non-literary translation since in certain language acceptability has its own tradition which may be different from it in other languages as stated by Vermeer. He says that the function of the translated text is determined by the interests and expectations of its recipients and not by the function of the source text. (in Dewi, 2000:21) To make a translation acceptable or to sound natural for the target readers, a translator does not only have to translate whatever is stated in the source text, but also have to reconstruct, adapt, or even rewrite it. (Dewi, 2000:22)
xxxii
The standard of acceptability depends on the strategy used by the translator. The translator should consider the cultural background of the target readers when translating conversation sentence. Not all of the sentences should be translated like in the ST because the cultural background of source language and target language are different. For example: “How are you today?” which was translated into “Bagaimana keadaanmu hari ini?”. Grammatically, this translation is correct but it does not sound natural for Indonesian people as the target readers. English people commonly used this expression when they met friends, but this sentence was not generally used in Indonesia. The translator can translate into “Apa kabar?”, like Indonesian people usually say, so that the translation can be acceptable and sound natural. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that to make conversation translation acceptable or sound natural for target reader, translator does not only have to translate whatever stated in the SL, but also has to consider the cultural background and common expression of the target readers and adapt the translation to target reader’s culture.
I. Readability Readability is the degree of ease of a text to comprehend its meaning. Sakri (in Nababan, 1999:63) explains that “keterbacaan pada derajat kemudahan sebuah tulisan untuk dipahami maksudnya.” Furthermore, Dale and Chall (in Nababan, 1999:63) mentions that “readability … the sum total (including the
xxxiii
interactions) of all those elements within a given piece of printed material that affects the success a group of readers have with it.” The involvement of the readers in translation determines the degree of readability of the text. However, each translation has a purpose to read and automatically it involves the readers. The translator should be able to translate the source text as natural as possible so that the reader can read easily. The degree of readability of the text is determined by some factors. According to Richard et all, readability depends on many factors; including (a) the average length of sentences in a passage (b) the number of new words a passage contains (c) the grammatical complexity of the language used (1992:306). Nababan suggests other factors that may affect readability of translated text which include the use of foreign and native words and sentences, ambiguous sentences, incomplete sentences (2004:54). Mobley and Zakaluk ( in Dewi, 2000:26 ) explains that most readability formulas take account of two characteristics of the printed material: word length (based on the assumption that long words are likely to be more difficult) and sentence length (based on the assumption that long sentences are likely to be complex and therefore difficult). These two variabels are generally considered to be good predictors of text difficulty.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A. Research Method There are many research methods which can be used in analyzing translation work. Mostly those methods are descriptive, categorized in the quantitative and qualitative; it depends on the target of its research. Suryawinata and Hariyanto (2003:173) states: “Penelitian mengenai kesalahan-kesalahan penerjemahan, prosedur penerjemahan
sesuai dengan jenis teksnya, dan
sebagainya, tentunya lebih cocok didekati dengan ancangan kualitatif.” It means that this method has purpose to describe what will be analyzed in qualitative way. This research is a descriptive study. Sutrisno Hadi (1983:3) states: “Penelitian ini adalah suatu penelitian deskriptif, yaitu suatu penelitian diamana peneliti hanya mengumpulkan data, menganalisis data dan kemudian menyimpulkan data tanpa menarik kesimpulan yang berlaku secara umum.” Related to this statement, the researcher only collects data, analyzes data, and draws the conclusion.
B. Data and Source of Data
xxxv
Data of the research are all Hagrid’s dialogues of the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the result of questionnaires of accuracy, acceptability, and readability assessment. The data of this research are taken from some sources. Source of data is the subject from which the data are obtained. Arikunto states that: Source of data is the subject from which the data are taken. It can be person (people who give data through interview or answer the questionnaire), place (source of data which serves a certain situation), paper (source of data which serves signs like letter, member, picture, etc) (1998:114 - 115).
In conducting this research, the researcher decides that the data are taken from: 1.
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling that consists of 468 pages.
2. Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban by Listiana Srisanti that consists of 534 pages. 3. Three professional translators who will provide data in relation to the accuracy and the acceptability of the translation. 4. Four native speakers of Indonesian who will provide data in relation to the readability of the translation.
C. Research Procedure
xxxvi
The research procedure is set up to determine steps in the research in order to get the result clearly and orderly. The research procedures are arranged as follows: 1. Collecting data The data of this research are Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban and its translation. Then the researcher determines the instrument of the research like making questionnaire. 2. Taking samples The data are taken purposively and there are 92 data (92 samples). 3. Classifying and coding the data The researcher classifies the data which are based on the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability. To make the classification of data easier, the researcher gives a code for each datum. The coding is based on: a.
the number of the datum,
b.
from which novel of the datum is collected; the original novel or its translation, and
c.
The number of the page from which the datum is collected.
For example:
Firs’ - years this way! (002/HPPA/97) Anak-anak kelas satu ke sini! (002/HPTA/113)
Code (002/HPPA/97) means that the datum number is 002, collected from the novel ’Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ on page 97. While the code (002/HPTA/113) means that the datum number is 002, taken from the novel ‘Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban’on page 113.
4. Analyzing the Data Concerning the problem statements, there will be three perspectives that the researcher focuses on:
4.1. The assessing of the accuracy of Hagrid’s dialogues translation. The assessment is done by professional translators. 4.2. The assessing of the acceptability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation. The assessment is done by professional translators. 4.3. The assessing of the readability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation.. The assessment is done by target readers who are teenagers between 14 – 17 years old.
xxxvii
5. Drawing Conclusion
D. Technique of Data Collection The researcher establishes some steps in collecting data as follows: 1. Reading the source text (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and the target text (Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban), highlighting Hagrid’s dialogues and then writing all those dialogues to be examined. 2. Making questionnaires of accuracy, acceptability, and readability to spread out for the raters and the target readers. 3. Asking three professional translators to compare source dialogues and target dialogues to know the accuracy and the acceptability of the translations and giving them questionnaires. The questionnaire is written in Indonesian. 4. Asking four target readers to read the translation of Hagrid’s dialogues in order to know whether the messages of the translation readable for the target readers and complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire is written in Indonesian. E. Technique of Data Analysis The researcher determines the result of data qualitatively. Furthermore, it is intended to know the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the translation of Hagrid’s dialogues.
In analyzing the valuable information from the target readers, the researcher spread out the questionnaire to some respondents, which is shared to four targets, they are teenagers between 14 – 17 years old. They are Yudha from SMUN 4 Solo, Sherly from SMPN 4 Solo, Dewi from SMP Bintang Laut Solo, and Annisa from SMUN 5 Solo.
xxxviii
While in analyzing the accuracy and acceptability of terms in the translation, the researcher asks three raters who are professional translators. The three raters are already translating some books and documents. They are Tiara Dwi Andarastuti, Sedya Cahyana, and Eka Kurniawan. Tiara is an editor from “Tiga Serangkai”, Sedya is an editor from “PT. Pabelan”, and Eka Kurniawan is a writer and a translator. It is sufficient to point out the steps of analyzing the data in this research a follows: 1. Knowing the accuracy of the Hagrid’s dialogues translation in the terms of context. 2. Knowing the acceptability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation. 3. Finding whether the Hagrid’s dialogues translation are readable for the target readers.

CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
A. Introduction This chapter analyzes the quality of the translation of Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The researcher found 92 data and the analysis will be about the data finding. This chapter is divided into three main parts; accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The first part of the analysis discusses the accuracy of Hagrid’s dialogues in the novel Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. The researcher was assisted by three raters who have background in translating books or documents. The researcher distributed the questionnaires to the raters. The raters must give a score to each data and give some reason. The score based on scale 1 to 4. Secondly, it discusses the acceptability of the Indonesian translation of Hagrid’s dialogues. The analysis of the data is based on the questionnaires which are shared to three raters. The result of the questionnaires came from the same raters who done the accuracy of the translation. The last analysis is about the readability of the translation for the target readers. The novel of Harry Potter is a novel for teenagers, the researcher decided to involve four teenagers as the target readers. Their ages are between 14 – 17 years old. They were asked to complete the questionnaires about the readability of the translation whether it is readable or not for them.
xl
Finally, the result of the analysis of accuracy, acceptability, and readability answers the questions stated in the problem statements.
B. Accuracy of the Translation The accuracy of translation is analyzed based on the information which is given by three raters. In this case, the researcher asked three raters who are professional translators to assess the accuracy level of the translation. They are Tiara Dwi Andarastuti (Rater 1), Sedya Cahyana (Rater 2), and Eka Kurniawan (Rater 3). The researcher used a questionnaire as the instrument to assess the accuracy level. There are 92 data, consisting of source text and target text. The raters should compare the source text and the target text, and complete the questionnaire. They give score for the data, and give some reasons and comments why they choose one of the score. The scores are; (1) inaccurate, (2) less accurate, (3) accurate, (4) highly accurate. The accuracy – rating instrument is adapted from Nagao, Tsujiii and Nakamura (in Nababan, 2004: 90 – 91). The scale is as follows: 1. The content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. The translated sentence is clear to the evaluator and no rewriting is needed. 2. The content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. The translated sentence can be clearly understood by the evaluator, but some rewriting and some change in word order are needed. 3. The content of the source sentence is not accurately conveyed to the target sentence. There are some problems with the choice of lexical items and with the relationship between phrase, clause, and sentence elements. 4. The source sentence is not translated at all into the target sentence, i.e. it is omitted or deleted.
xli
A translation is said to be inaccurate if the source sentence is not translated at all into the target sentence, i.e. it is omitted or deleted. A less inaccurate refers to whenever the content of the source sentence is not accurately conveyed to the target sentence. There are some problems with the choice of lexical items and with the relationship between phrase, clause, and sentence elements. Meanwhile, a translation is said accurate if the content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. The translated sentence can be clearly understood by the evaluator, but some rewriting and some change in word order are needed. Finally, highly accurate translation means that the content of the source sentence is accurately conveyed to the target sentence. The translated sentence is clear to the evaluator and no rewriting is needed. Table 1 below shows accuracy of the translation as determined by the raters.

Table 1. Accuracy of the Translation
Table 1 shows further that Rater 1 decides 6 (7%) of the data are inaccurate, 4 (4%) of the data are less accurate, 40 (44%) of the data are accurate while other 42 (46%) data are highly accurate. Rater 2 decides 1 (1%) of the data is inaccurate, 18 (20%) data are less accurate, 32 (35%) data are accurate, and 41 (44%) data are highly accurate. Meanwhile, Rater 3 finds that 1 (1%) data is inaccurate, 3 (3%) data are less accurate, 21 (23%) are accurate, and 67 (73%) are highly accurate. The examples are exemplified by the followings.
Example 1 (Datum 084) English
:
“ Yeh gotta go. Every inch of him was trembling. They mustn’t find yeh here… go on, now… ” ( 084/HPPA/355)
Indonesian :
“ Kalian harus pergi. Mereka tidak boleh temukan kalian di sini… pergilah, sekarang …” ( 084/HPTA/405 )
Rater 1 said that the translation is inaccurate because there is a sentence which is not translated. It is “every inch of him was trembling”. Rater 2 and rater
xliii
3 have the same opinion with rater 1. They write that it should be translated into “seluruh tubuh / badannya gemetar”.
Example 2 (Datum 017) English
:
“Yeh always wai fer the Hippogriff ter make the firs’ move. It’s polite see?” ( 017/HPPA/127 )
Indonesian :
“Kalian harus selalu tunggu sampai si Hippogriff bergerak lebih dahulu. Itu berarti sopan.” ( 017/HPTA/147 )
Rater 1 comments that the translation is inaccurate. There is a difference between source text and target text. Source text is a question sentence; on the other hand target text is not a question sentence. She suggests, it will be better if the target text is also in a question sentence, likes “ Itu berarti sopan, bukan?” Meanwhile, rater 2 and 3 write the example 2 including to accurate translation.
Example 3 (Datum 034) English
:
“Tha’s better. Listen, it was good of yeh ter come an’ see me, I really …” ( 034/HPPA/134 )
Indonesian :
“Sekarang lebih enak. Kalian baik sekali datang tengok aku, aku sungguh …” ( 034/HPTA/155 )
The word “listen” is not translated, writes rater 1. Even though the target text can be understood clearly, it can cause a lost message from the source text. Rater 1 states that example 3 is inaccurate translation.
xliv
Example 4 (Datum 001) English
:
“Dear Harry, Happy Birthday! Think you might find this useful for next year. Won’t say no more here. Tell you when I see you. Hope the Muggles are treating you right. All the best, Hagrid.” (001/HPPA/20)
Indonesian :
“Dear Harry, Selamat Ulang Tahun! Kupikir buku ini mungkin berguna untukmu pada tahun ajaran baru nanti. Tak mau bilang lebih banyak lagi. Akan bilang kalau ketemu kau. Mudahmudahan Muggle-muggle perlakukan kau dengan baik. Salam hangat, Hagrid.” ( 001/HPTA/25 )
Rater 1 decides that example 4 is inaccurate translation because she said that “dear” is not translated into target text and “won’t say no more here” is not correctly translated; therefore there will be a lost message. Meanwhile, rater 2 and rater 3 give score 2 for the data in the example 4. It is less inaccurate. Rater 3 writes that the sentence “Tak mau bilang lebih banyak lagi. Akan bilang kalau ketemu kau” can be changed into “Aku tidak perlu panjang lebar, nanti saja kalau ketemu”.
Example 5 (Datum 005) English
:
“Can’ believe it … great man, Dumbledore … came straight down to me hut after Professor Kettleburn said he’d had enough … it’s what I always wanted.” ( 005/HPPA/106 )
Indonesian :
“Tak bisa percaya itu … orang hebat, Dumbledore … langsung datang temui aku di pondok setelah Professor Kettleburn sudah
xlv
cukup lelah mengajar … ini yang sudah lama kuinginkan.” (005/HPTA/12 ) Rater 1 said that “always” is not translated correctly into “sudah lama”. It makes the message in the source text not transferred in the target text.
Example 6 (Datum 056) English
:
“Yeh’ve no idea. Never bin anywhere like it. Thought I was goin’ mad. Kep’ goin’ over horrible stuff in me mind … the day I got expelled from Hogwarts … day me Dad die … day I had ter let Norbert go …” ( 056/HPPA/239 )
Indonesian :
“Kalian tak bisa bayangkan. Tak ada tempat lain seperti itu. Kupikir aku akan gila. Hal-hal mengerikan bermunculan di pikiranku … hari aku dikeluarkan dari Hogwarts … hari ayahku meninggal
…
hari
aku
harus
lepaskan
Norbert
…”
(056/HPTA/273) Related to the translation above, rater 2 gives his opinion that the word “hari” should be better if it is translated into “pada saat-saat”. In the words “bayangkan and lepaskan”, it needs affix me-.
Example 7 (Datum 079) English
:
“I – I took him outside. He’s tethered in me pumpkin patch. Thought he oughta see the trees an’ – an smell fresh air before …” (079/HPPA/353)
xlvi
Indonesian :
“Aku – kubawa keluar. Dia kutambatkan di kebun labuku. Kupikir dia harus lihat pohon-pohon dan – dan hirup udara segar – sebelum …” (079/HPTA/402)
Rater 2 suggests, the Indonesian translation in example 7 should be written “Ku – kubawa dia keluar. Kutambatkan di kebun labuku. Kupikir dia harus melihat pohon-pohon dan – dan menghirup udara segar – sebelum …”
Example 8 (Datum 015) English
:
Indonesian :
“So if yeh wan’ ter come a bit nearer …” ( 015/HPPA/126 ) “Nah, kalian maju sedikit …” ( 015/HPTA/147 )
The translation of “nah, kalian maju sedikit” can be changed into “nah, silakan kalian agak mendekat” as the suggestion from rater 3.
Example 9 (Datum 003) English
:
Indonesian :
“All righ, you three?” ( 003/HPPA/97 ) “Baik-baik saja kalian bertiga?” ( 003/HPTA/113 )
According to rater 1, the example 9 is included in accurate translation. It gives score 3. On the other hand, rater 2 and 3 decide that example 9 is considered in highly accurate translation.
Example 10 (Datum 025) English
:
“Righ’ then, Harry. I reckon he migh’ let yeh ride him!” (025/HPPA/128)
xlvii
Indonesian :
“Baiklah, Harry. Kurasa dia mungkin izinkan kau naik dia!” (025/HPTA/149)
The translation above is given score 3 by rater 1 and 2. It means that the translation is accurate. Rater 3 decides that it includes highly accurate translation.
Example 11 (Datum 049) English
:
“Yeh don’ know them gargoyles at the Committee fer the Disposal o’ Dangerous Creatures! They’ve got in fer interestin’ creatures!” (049/HPPA/236)
Indonesian :
“Kau tak tahu para gargoyle di Komite Pemunahan Satwa Berbahaya! Mereka benci binatang menarik!” (049/HPTA/270)
Rater 1 comments that “got in” has different meaning with “benci”. It means the translation is less accurate. According to rater 1, the translation will cause the difference among the source sentence and target sentence message. Rater 2 decides that the data in example 11 to be an accurate translation. Rater 3, on the other hand, states that the translation is highly accurate.
Example12 (Datum 091) English
:
“Blimey, haven’ yeh heard? Er – Snape told all Slytherins this mornin’… Thought everyone’d know by now … Professor Lupin’s a werewolf, see. An’ he was loose in the grounds las’ night. He’s packin’ now, o’ course.” (091/HPPA/454)
Indonesian :
“Astaga kau belum dengar? Eh – Snape beritahu semua anak Slytherin tadi pagi … Kukira semua orang sudah tahu sekarang
xlviii
… Profesor Lupin itu manusia serigala, tahu. Dan dia berkeliaran semalam. Dia sedang berkemas sekarang, tentu saja.” ( 091/HPTA/518 ) The data in example 12 is less accurate translation, comments rater 2. “Dia sedang berkemas sekarang, tentu saja” should be translated into “Tentu saja saat ini dia sedang berkemas”. Rater 1 and rater 3 give the same opinion. They write that example 12 includes in highly accurate translation.
Example 13 (Datum 047) English
:
“ I tell yeh, if I’d got ter Black before little Pettigrew did, I wouldn’t’ve messed around with wands – I’d’ve ripped him limb-from-limb.” (047/HPPA/226)
Indonesian :
“Kalau aku sampai ketemu Black lebih dulu dari Pettigrew, aku tak akan pakai tongkat – akan betot sampai lepas tangan dan kakinya.” (047/HPTA/259)
The example above is less accurate translation, comments rater 3. It will be better if “… akan betot sampai lepas tangan dan kakinya” is translated “akan kupatah-patahkan tungkai-tungkainya”, suggests rater 3. According to rater 1 and rater 2, the data of the example 13 is accurate translation.
Example 14 (Datum 020) English
:
“Good man, Harry! Right then – let’s see how yeh get on with Buckbeak.” ( 020/HPPA/127 )
xlix
Indonesian :
“Bagus, Harry! Baiklah – kita lihat bagaimana kau berkenalan dengan Buckbeak.” ( 020/HPTA/148 )
Example 15 (Datum 050) English
:
“I couldn’ leave him tied up out there in the snow! All on his own! At Christmas!” ( 050/HPPA/237 )
Indonesian :
“Aku tak bisa tinggalkan dia ditambatkan di luar pada hari bersalju begini! Sendirian! Natal, lagi!” ( 050/HPTA/271 )
Example 16 (Datum 057) English
:
“Yeh can really remember who yeh are after a while. An’ yeh can’ see the point o’ livin’ at all.” ( 057/HPPA/239 )
Indonesian :
“Kau tak ingat lagi siapa dirimu setelah beberapa waktu. Dan kau tak tahu lagi apa gunanya hidup.” (057/HPTA/273)
Related to the examples above, all the raters decide that the example 14, 15, and 16 are highly accurate. It means that all of the raters agree that the source sentences have been translated highly accurate into the target sentences.
C. Acceptability of the Translation As stated previously, the researcher employs the same three raters to measure the acceptability of the translation. They are requested to fill in the questionnaire for acceptability level and give scale to each datum as well as their underlying reason why the choose it. The measurement of the acceptability of the translation is based on a scale 1 to 4. They are (1) unacceptable, (2) less acceptable, (3) acceptable, and (4) highly acceptable. The researcher provides the raters with a space to give their
l
comments and reason why they are opted to choose one of the four options. Table 2 below shows the result of the acceptability measurement as given by the three raters.

Table 2. Acceptability of the Translation
As table 2 indicates, a translation is said unacceptable if the target readers are unfamiliar with the words and they cannot understand and accept the meaning. The examples are shown below. Example 1 (Datum 032) English
:
“School gov’nors have bin told, o’ course. They reckon I started too big. Shoulda left Hippogriff fer later… done Flobberworms or summat… jus’ thought it’d make a good firs’ lesson…’s all my fault…” (032/HPPA/133)

Indonesian :

atau
apa…kupikir akan jadi pelajaran pertama yang seru… semua salahku…” ( 032/HPTA/154 ) Rater 1 comments that the translation above is unstructured. The dialogue is used by someone who cannot speak English in appropriate way.. The language structures are incorrect. On the other hand, rater 2 and rater 3 write, the translation of example one is included on acceptable translation. A translation is classified as acceptable one if it has good diction and easy to accept the message by the readers though one or two grammatical errors.
Example 2 (Datum 071) English
:
“Really upset, she was, when Black nearly stabbed yeh, Ron. She’s got her heart in the right place, Hermione has, an’ you two not talkin’ to her…” (071/HPPA/297)
Indonesian :
“Dia benar-benar cemas, waktu Black nyaris tusuk kau, Ron. Anak itu hatinya baik, Hermione itu, dan kalian tidak ngomong dengannya…” (071/HPTA/338)
Rater 2 and Rater 3 have the same opinion. They decide that example 2 is included in acceptable translation. Meanwhile, rater 1 is disagreeing with both of the raters. She has her own opinion. Example 2 is included into unacceptable translation. She comments that the sentence is difficult to understand and it is because the arrangement of the words is bad.
lii
There are some translations which are categorized as less acceptable translations. Result of the questionnaires indicate that Rater 1 chooses 27 (29%) data, Rater 2 chooses 15 (16%) data, and Rater 3 chooses 2 (2%) data as less acceptable translations.
Example 3 (Datum 001) English
Kupikir buku ini mungkin berguna untukmuy pada tahun ajaran baru nanti. Tak mau bilang lebih banyak lagi. Akan bilang kalau ketemu kau. Mudah-mudahan Muggle-muggle perlakukan kau dengan baik. Salam hangat, Hagrid.” ( 001/HPTA/25 )
The sentences “Tak mau bilang lebih banyak lagi. Akan bilang kalau ketemu kau” do not have good language structure, it makes the meaning difficult to understand, writes Rater 1. Rater 2 also has the same opinion with rater 2 that example 3 is less acceptable translation. He suggests that it will be better if both of the sentences are connected by comma. Rater 3 has different opinion with both of the raters. He finds that the translation in example 3 is acceptable.
Example 4 (Datum 082)

dilaksanakan. Tulis padaku pagi ini. Bilang dia mau – mau bersamaku. Orang hebat, Dumbledore…” (082/HPTA/403) According to rater 1 and rater 3, example 4 is less acceptable. Rater 1 said, “Tulis padaku pagi ini” is unclear meaning, and it makes the sentence cannot understand well. Rater 2 comments that it will be more acceptable if the sentence “Tulis padaku pagi ini” is translated into “Ia mengirimiku surat pagi ini”. Meanwhile, rater 2 categorizes the translation in example 4 is acceptable.
Example 5 (Datum 092) English
:
“Leavin’, isn’ he? Resigned firs’ thing this mornin’. Says he can’ risk it happenin’ again.” (092/HPPA/455)
Indonesian :
“Mau pergi, kan? Undurkan diri pagi-pagi tadi. Bilang dia tidak mau ambil resiko kejadian seperti semalam terjadi lagi.” (092/HPTA/519 )
The three raters decide that the example above is less acceptable. The message of the translation cannot be understood well. It causes that the translation is not acceptable. Rater 1 and Rater 3 are agreeing with this comment. Rater 3 suggests that “Undurkan diri pagi-pagi tadi. Bilang dia tidak mau ambil resiko kejadian seperti semalam terjadi lagi”
liv
can be rewritten into “Saat
pengunduran dirinya, dia bilang bahwa dia tidak mau mengambil resiko seperti kejadian semalam.”
Example 6 (Datum 003) English
:
Indonesian :
“All righ’, you three?” (003/HPPA/97) “Baik-baik saja kalian bertiga?” ( 003/HPTA/113 )
In the matter of translation above, the three raters give different comments. According to Rater 1, the example above is less acceptable. The structure of the sentence is incorrect. It should be “Kalian bertiga baik-baik saja?” Besides, it makes the sentence cannot be understood easily by the target readers. Rater 2 classifies the translation as acceptable translation. Meanwhile, rater 3 says that the example 6 is classified as highly acceptable translation.
Example 7 (Datum 041) English
:
“Never occurred ter me what he was doin’ there. I didn’t know he’d bin Lily an’ James’s Secret-Keeper. Thought he’d jus’ heard the news o’ You-Know-Who’s attack an’ come ter see what he could do.” (041/HPPA/224)
Indonesian :
“Tak pernah terpikir olehku apa yang dia lakukan di sana. Aku tak tahu dia Penjaga Rahasia Lily dan James Potter. Kukira dia baru saja dengar berita tenting seaman Kau-Tahu-Siapa dan datang

lv

yang
bisa
dilakukannya.”
“The translation of example 7 is acceptable”, write rater 2 and rater 3. There are two words which are unfamiliar, “dengar and lihat”. It should be “mendengar and melihat”. That is the explanation from rater 1 why she chooses the example as less acceptable translation.
Example 8 (Datum 016) English
:
“Now, firs’ thing yeh gotta know abou’ Hippogriffs is they’re proud. Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don’t never insult one, ‘cause it might be the last thing yeh do.” (016/HPPA/126)
Indonesian :
“Nah, hal pertama yang kalian perlu tahu tenting Hippogriff adalah mereka angkuh. Gampang tersinggung, Hippogriffhippogriff ini. Jangan pernah hina Hippogriff, karena dia bisa habisi kalian.” ( 016/HPTA/147 )
“Gampang tersinggung, Hippogriff-hippogriff ini” should be changed into “Hippogriff-hippogriff ini gampang tersinggung”, suggest rater 1. She also suggests, “Jangan pernah hina Hippogriff, karena dia bisa habisi kalian” can be rewritten into “Jangan pernah menghina Hippogriff karena dia bisa menghabisi kalian”. Rater 1 writes the example 8 is less acceptable. Rater 3 says the example 8 considers to highly acceptable translation. On the other hand, rater 2 says that example 8 includes to acceptable translation.
Example 9 (Datum 056) English
:
“Yeh’ve no idea. Never bin anywhere like it. Thought I was goin’ mad. Kep’ goin’ over horrible stuff in me mind…the day I
lvi
got expelled from Hogwarts…day me Dad die…day I had ter let Norbert go…” (056/HPPA/239) Indonesian :
“Kalian tak bisa bayangkan. Tak ada tempat lain seperti itu. Kupikir aku akan gila. Hal-hal mengerikan bermunculan di pikiranku…hari aku dikeluarkan dari Hogwarts…hari ayahku meninggal…hari
aku
harus
lepaskan
Norbert…”
(056/HPTA/273) Rater 2 decides that data in example 9 to be less accurate translation. He says, “This translation needs finishing touch”. “pada saat” is more suitable than “hari”. Rater 1 and rater 3, on the other hand, state that the translation is acceptable for the target readers.
Example 10 (Datum 020) English
:
“Good man, Harry! Right then – let’s see how yeh get on with Buckbeak.” (020/HPPA/127)
Indonesian :
“Bagus, Harry! Baiklah – kita lihat bagaimana kau berkenalan dengan Buckbeak.” ( 020/HPTA/148 )
Example 11 (Datum 057) English
:
“Yeh can really remember who yeh are after a while. An’ yeh can’ see the point o’ livin’ at all.” (057/HPPA/239)
Indonesian :
“Kau tak ingat lagi siapa dirimu setelah beberapa waktu. Dan kau tak tahu lagi apa gunanya hidup.” (057/HPTA/273)
Example 12 (Datum 065) English
:
“I got somethin’ ter discuss with you two.” (065/HPPA/296)
lvii
Indonesian :
“Ada yang mau kurundingkan dengan kalian berdua.” (065/HPTA/337)
Example 13 (Datum 085) English
:
Indonesian :
“I’ll let yeh out the back way.” (085/HPPA/355) “Kuantar kalian keluar lewat pintu belakang.” (085/HPTA/405)
Example 14 (Datum 089) English
:
“Beaky! He escaped! He’s free! Bin celebratin’ all night!” (089/HPPA/454)
Indonesian :
“Beaky! Dia lolos! Dia bebas! Aku rayakan semalam suntuk!” (089/HPTA/518)
The three raters give the same opinion for the example 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. They state that the translation above is highly acceptable. There is semantically and grammatically acceptable, and has no spelling error. It means that all of the raters agree that the source sentences have been translated highly acceptable into the target sentences. D. Readability of the Translation The readability of the translation is analyzed based on the questionnaire data. The questionnaire is completed by four raters. The novel of Harry Potter is designed for teenagers. Therefore, the researcher decides to employ four teenagers as raters. Their ageds are between 14 – 17 years old. They are Yudha as rater 1 (17 years old), Sherly as rater 2 (14 years old), Dewi as rater 3 (15 years old), and Annisa as rater 4 (16 years old). These four teenagers really like to read Harry’s Potter novel.
lviii
There are four options available for readability assessment. They are; (1) unreadable, (2) less readable, (3) readable, and (4) highly readable. The researcher only put the Indonesian translation to be rated by the raters. Table 3 below shows the result of the readability assessment as determined by the four raters.

Table 3. Readability of the Translation
The unreadable translation shows grammatical mistakes and wrong diction that cause distortion in meaning. The examples are as follows: Example 1 (Datum 006) Hagrid :
Baik semuanya? Kalian ikut pelajaranku yang pertama! Habis makan
siang!
Sudah
bangun
sejak
pukul
lima
siapkan
segalanya…mudah-mudahan oke … aku guru … wah … (006/HPTA/128) Rater 1 says that the translation is confusing. He does not know what the main point of the message is.
Example 2 (Datum 028) Hagrid :
Kau tidak akan mati! Tolong ada yang bantu aku – harus bawa dia pergi dari sini … ( 028/HPTA/151 )
Example 3 (Datum 047) Hagrid :
Kalau aku sampai ketemu Black lebih dulu dari Pettigrew, aku tak akan pakai tongkat – akan betot sampai lepas tangan dan kakinya. (047/HPTA/259)
Example 4 (Datum 052)
lx
Hagrid :
Dia sudah berbuat lebih dari cukup untukku. Sudah kelewat sibuk tahan Dementor agar tidak masuk kastil, dan Sirius Black berkeliaran … (052/HPTA/271)
Example 5 (Datum 082) Hagrid :
Dumbledore akan datang sementara … sementara itu dilaksanakan. Tulis padaku pagi ini. Bilang dia mau – mau bersamaku. Orang hebat, Dumbledore … (082/HPTA/403)
Based on the example 2, 3, 4, and 5, rater 3 comments that she cannot understand well the message of the translation. In other word, it is confusing. On the other hand, rater 2 and rater 4 do not find any unreadable translation in the questionnaire. Less readable translation refers to a translation with no distortion of meaning though it has awkward literal of translation and grammatical error and spelling which make the sentence less readable. Rater 1 decides 4 (4%) data to be less readable, rater 2 decides 3 (3%) data to be less readable, rater 3 decides 19 (21%) data to be less readable, and rater 4 decides 12 (13%) data to be less readable. The examples belong to this category are: Example 5 (Datum 001) Hagrid :
Dear Harry, Selamat Ulang Tahun! Kupikir buku ini mungkin berguna untukmu pada tahun ajaran baru nanti. Tak mau bilang lebih banyak lagi. Akan bilang kalau ketemu kau. Mudah-mudahan Muggle-muggle perlakukan kau dengan baik. Salam hangat, Hagrid. ( 001/HPTA/25 )
Example 6 (Datum 031)
lxi
Hagrid :
Madam Pomfrey obati dia sebaik-baiknya, tapi Malfoy bilang lengannya masih sakit … diperban … erang-erang (031/HPTA/154)
According to rater 1 and 3, the translation of the example 5 is not good enough. They say that the structure of the sentence and the language style are difficult to understand. Rater 1 says about the example 6, “What does it means by erang-erang? I do not know the meaning.” Meanwhile rater 3 says that the sentence in example 6 is grammatically error.
Example 7 (Datum 005) Hagrid :
Tak bisa percaya itu … orang hebat, Dumbledore … langsung datang temui aku di pondok setelah Profesor Kettleburn sudah cukup lelah mengajar … ini yang sudah lama kuinginkan. (005/HPTA/123)
Rater 1 says that it needs time to understand the message of the example 6. Rater 3 and rater 4 say that the sentence of example 6 is difficult to understand because it is not clear what is talking about.
Example 8 (Datum 051) Hagrid :
Takkan ada bedanya! Setan-setan Komite Pemunahan itu, mereka semua dalam saku Lucius Malfoy! Takut padanya! Dan kalau aku kalah dalm perkara ini, Buckbeak … (051/HPTA/271)
According to rater 2, there is no subject in the sentence “Takut padanya!” It makes there is no correlation among the sentences, and it causes the translation difficult to understand.
lxii
Example 9 (Datum 066) Hagrid :
Dia sedih. Dia sering kunjungi aku sejak Natal. Kesepian. Mulanya kalian tidak bicara padanya gara-gara Firebolt, sekarang kalian tidak bicara padanya karena kucingnya … (066/HPTA/337)
Example 10 (Datum 092) Hagrid :
Mau pergi , kan? Undurkan diri pagi-pagi tadi. Bilang dia tidak mau ambil resiko kejadian seperti semalam terjadi lagi. (092/HPTA/519)
Rater 3 and rater 4 comment that the translation in example 8 and example 9 are very confusing. When they read this sentence, they do not know what is talking about because the structure of the sentences is awkward. Score 3 or readable translation is given to translation that indicates good diction, no distortion of meaning although it has one or two errors in grammar or spelling and it is still easy to read by the readers. Rater 1 finds 31 (34%) of data to be in readable translation, rater 2 decides 26 (29%) of data to be in the readable scale, rater 3 decides 31 (34%) of data to be in the readable scale, and rater 4 finds 44 (48%) of the data to be in the readable translation. The examples of the data that belong to this category are: Example 11 (Datum 012) Hagrid :
Baiklah, jadi … kalian sudah punya buku dan … dan … sekarang kalian butuh Satwa Gaib. Yeah, jadi aku akan ambil sekarang. Tunggu … (012/HPTA/145)
Example 12 (Datum 041)
lxiii
Hagrid :
Tak pernah terpikir olehku apa yang dia lakukan disana. Aku tak tahu dia Penjaga Rahasia Lily dan James Potter. Kukira dia baru saja dengar berita tenting seaman Kau-Tahu-Siapa dan datang untuk lihat apa yang bisa dilakukannya. (041/HPTA/25 )
Example 13 (Datum 059) Hagrid :
Kau pikir itu ada artinya bagi mereka? Mereka tidak peduli. Asal mereka punya beberapa ratus manusia yang dikurung di sana, supaya mereka bisa sedot kebahagiaannya, mereka tidak peduli siapa yang bersalah siapa yang tidak … ( 059/HPTA/274 )
Example 14 (Datum 068) Hagrid :
Dia beberapa kali menangis, kalian tahu. Sedang melewati masa sulit sekarang. ( 068/HPTA/337 )
All of the raters have chosen the data in example 11 and 12 to be readable. They do not find any difficulties to know the message. Example 13 is chosen by rater 1, rater 2, and rater 4. On the other hand, rater 1 decides that example 3 belongs to unreadable translation. She does not know what it means by “sedot kebahagiaanya” and “beberapa ratus manusia”. The sentence in example 14 is included in readable translation, said rater 2, rater 3, and rater 4. Rater 1 classifies the data in example 14 to be highly readable. Highly readable translation is given to the questionnaire that has no mistake in the use of grammar, diction, and spelling that it is easy to be read. Rater 1 chooses 56 (61%) of data to be highly readable translation, rater 2 finds 63 (68%) of data to be highly readable translation, rater 3 decides 28 (30%) of
lxiv
the data to be highly readable, and rater 4 chooses 36 (39%) of data to be highly readable translation. The examples of the data that belong to this category are: Example 15 (Datum 004) Hagrid :
Berkat kalian bertiga. ( 004/HPTA/123 )
Example 16 (Datum 007) Hagrid :
Ayo, ayo, kita mulai! Ada kejutan buat kalian hari ini! Pelajaran istimewa! Semua sudah kumpul? Baik, ikuti aku! (007/HPTA/144)
Example 17 (Datum 014) Hagrid :
Hippogriff! Cantik, kan, mereka? ( 014/HPTA/146 )
Example 18 (Datum 037) Hagrid :
Entahlah, Fred and George Weasley bisa jadi saingan mereka. (037/HPTA/254)
Example 19 (Datum 057) Hagrid :
Kau tak ingat lagi siapa dirimu setelah beberapa waktu. Dan kau tak tahu lagi apa gunanya hidup. ( 057/HPTA/273 )
Example 20 (Datum 084) Hagrid :
Kalian harus pergi. Mereka tidak boleh temukan kalian di sini … pergilah, sekarang … ( 084/HPTA/405 )
Related to the examples above, all of the raters gives score 4. It means the four raters agree that the translations have been translated highly readable into the target readers. The four raters can understand the translation easily without finding any difficulties to catch the message of the translation.
lxv
The assessment of the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability has been presented. The results show that more than 70% of the data of Hagrid’s dialogues are very accurate. There are also more than 50% data of Hagrid’s dialogues acceptable for the raters and there are more than 65% of the data comprehensible by the target readers. In other words, the target readers can understand the meaning of the translation of Hagrid’s dialogues easily.
lxvi
CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
A. Conclusion In this chapter, the researcher draws some conclusions to answer the problems stated in chapter I namely: 1) How is the accuracy of Hagrid’s dialogues translation?, 2) How is the acceptability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation?, 3) How is the readability of Hagrid’s dialogues translation? Based on the result of the data analysis, the following conclusions are drawn with regard to the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the translation. 1. Accuracy The translation of Hagrid’s dialogue in the novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” into “Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban” is highly accurate. This can be seen in Table 1 in the previous chapter. The raters choose many data which are included in the highly accurate translation, while the average percentage for highly accurate scale is more than 70%. 2. Acceptability Hagrid’s dialogue translation in the novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” into Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban” is acceptable. It indicates that the translation is acceptable for the target readers because most of the words are familiar and natural in their daily life. Table 2
lxvii
in the previous chapter shows that more than 50% data are acceptable for the raters. 3. Readability The translation of Hagrid’s dialogue in the novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” into “Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban” is generally highly readable for the target readers. It indicates that the target readers can understand the meaning and catch the message easily about the translation Based on the questionnaire result as shown in Table 3, more than 65% of the data are comprehensible by the target readers.
B. Suggestion After analyzing and drawing some conclusions, the researcher can give some suggestion that might be useful for those who deal with translation subject. The suggestions are as follows: 1. Translators In translating, a translator should not only consider the accuracy of the meaning or the message in the source text, but also other important factors such as the acceptability and the readability of the translation. Equivalence is a must in translation. The meaningfulness and the naturalness of the translation variation are two factors determining the equivalence of a translation. In addition, the translator needs to consider the readers suppose to read their translation and not based on their own understanding. 2. Other Researchers
lxviii
This research can inspire other researchers to conduct similar studies about quality assessment; the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability. The other researchers can add more studies about accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The researcher is sure that there are many interesting translation variations which can be studied by the other researchers. 3. Students of English Department Students are expected to realize that the translation variation can occur in translation process is due to the language system differences. Translation variation is something that cannot be denied in translating process. The process of translating a source language text into the target text must consider the system of both languages. It is difficult to produce a natural but also equivalent translation to the source language. Therefore, it is very important for English Department students to improve their capability on translation and they also have to really understand the system of both source language and target language. 4. Lecturers Hopefully, this research can be useful for the lecturers of English Department to give more skills in how to make a good translation based on the accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
