OSL Jaarverslag 2012
Sprekers waren Willem Schinkel (EUR), Arnold Labrie (MU), Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens (EUR), Thomas Vaessens (UvA), Saskia Pieterse (UU) en Frans Willem Korsten (LU & EUR).

Although perceived mainly as a “director’s theatre” with an imported repertoire, the Gate not only remedied the nationalist insularity of the early twentieth-century Irish stage, but also produced the works of several new Irish playwrights. Engaging with Ireland’s conflicted history, memory, and identity, these writers sought to break the strictures of conservative drama and explore alternatives to the sociocultural conservatism of their Celtic Revivalist predecessors as well as the Abbey Theatre’s – and the censorious government’s – equally contestable notions of Irishness. Drawing on recent developments in postcolonial memory theory, my project explores how this revolutionary playhouse endeavoured to perform Ireland’s troubled cultural memory onstage, acknowledging the tension between modernist poetics and traditionalist politics that mostly fostered repression of the nation’s past and anxiety about its future. Odile Bodde, Narrative Reflective Self-understanding: the Corporeal Supervisor: A. colonial and postcolonial history, postcolonial theory, scientific discourses on ‘race’ and ‘mixed race,’ etc.). Daniëlle Bruggeman, The Performance of Identity through Fashion Supervisors Anneke Smelik and Ulrich Lehmann | Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen 2010-2014 This research is part of the larger NWO-programme Dutch Fashion Identity in a Globalised World and explores the dynamic relationship between fashion and identity. The central question is how the theoretical notion of ‘cultural performance’ can help us understand how fashion and dressing function in the construction of individual and national identity. The project looks at two levels of performance. First, the artistic performance as it takes place on the stage of the fashion show and in the medium of fashion photography. The main question here is how Dutch fashion brands create a specific identity in these media over a period of time. Second, the cultural performance of identity through fashion. Through the analysis of different visual media the hypothesis that fashion is an important way of performing one’s identity will be tested. This project aims at understanding the dynamics of identity as it is expressed through fashion as a creative performance. The research project Dutch Fashion Identity in a Globalised World has four subprojects and is funded by the programme “Cultural Dynamics” from NWO (Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research), Artez College of Art Arnhem, Saxion Universities Enschede, University of Amsterdam, Mr. Koetsier Fund for Fashion Industry, and the Premsela Fund for Dutch Design and Fashion. Christopher Cusack, Recollecting the Great Famine in Irish (Diaspora) Fiction, 1892-1921 Supervisors: Hans Bak and Marguérite Corporaal | Radboud University Nijmegen 2011-2015 My project is part of the ERC-funded research programme Relocated Remembrance: The Great Famine in Irish (Diaspora) Fiction, 1847-1921. I focus on the last of three generations of writers, studying the cultural memory of the Great Famine in Irish and Irish diaspora fiction written between 1892 and 1921. My project analyses how works by Irish (diaspora) authors such as Mildred Darby, Patrick Sheehan, William Barry, and John Brennan relate to earlier Famine recollections. In many of their texts, this traumatic period features prominently, for instance as a rhetorical weapon used for nationalist purposes. Because the majority of authors I study were born after the Famine and many were writing in diaspora, sometimes describing a country they had never even seen, I will focus on transgenerational as well as transnational parallels and divergences between ways of remembering to explore how the cultural memory of the Famine is transformed across different contexts. Amrist Das, The American Ghazal: The Immigration of an Arabic Poetic Form (1960-2010) Supervisors: Prof. dr. D.M. Oostdijk and Dr. Anita Raghunath Unknown to many in the Western world, the ghazal is one of the oldest forms of poetry. Having originated in pre- Islamic Arabia in the 7th century, it gradually spread to Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Pashto, Turkish, and Urdu. Since 1960 it has also become an increasingly popular poetic form in the United States, with such practitioners as Aghi Shahid Ali and Adrienne Rich. This project analyzes why the ghazal has become an accepted form in the United States, how it differs from ghazals elsewhere, and what this form of traveling poetry signifies about the migration of a literary or cultural form. My hypothesis is that the American ghazal resembles an immigrant in the sense that initially it retains most aspects of the region of its origin. Yet eventually it assumes more characteristics of the host country, and eventually becomes naturalized. I will argue that, like the sonnet and haiku before it, the ghazal will soon become fully American.

Jeroen Dera, Pioneering the Non-Print: Book Reviewing on Radio, Television and the Internet, from the 1920s to the Present Supervisor: prof.dr. Max van Duijn, Understanding Other Minds Supervisors: Ineke Sluijter and ArieVerhagen | Universiteit Leiden 2011-2015 At high school I was aiming at a career in marketing. How to move a crowd? But then I joined someone who was working on an extraordinary project: he was translating Macbeth into contemporary Dutch and planned an arty performance using video clips, etcetera. His branch: studying Dutch Language & Literature in Leiden. So that is what I did too (meanwhile soothing my corporate conscience with a minor in business administration). After a two years break for an intensive medical treatment I added some philosophy courses. In 2010 I graduated from a ‘custom’ MPhil programme, combining literature, cognitive/evolutionary linguistics, and philosophy of mind. My thesis became the foundation for my current PhD-project, “Understanding Other Minds”, investigating the interconnectedness of narrative language and theory of mind—not surprisingly, I drew my first examples from Shakespeare… Sara Rosa Espi, Back to the Book Supervisors: Kiene Brillenburg Wurth and Dr Anna Poletti | Utrecht University 2011-2015 My research takes place within the Back to the Book project which aims to document innovations in paper-based literature in the digital age. My specific focus concerns personal zines: handmade, non-commercially produced and distributed personal manuscripts (Duncombe 1997). In this research I will be analysing the zine as a literary form that is undergoing transition in the way that it is archived, stored, collected and digitally preserved. I will focus on how zines are used as a medium to express extraordinary bodily experiences in creative ways. Exploring a body of zines in which the authors write about personal experiences such as mental illness or “dangerous gifts”, chronic pain suffering and disability as well as transitional experiences such as the process of transitioning from one gender identity to another, I will analyses how these experiences are rendered visible as a paper materiality, and how the personal zine leaves a paper trail as an auratic object (Benjamin) in a predominantly digital ecology of self- and communal writing. Femke Essink, Adaptation and the Heritage of the Sixties Supervisor: Thomas Vaessens | University of Amsterdam 2011-2015 Last July I graduated my researchmaster Dutch Literature at the University of Amsterdam, and from September onwards I will be working as a PdD candidate at the Institute of Culture and

History, University of Amsterdam, where I will be a member of the Capacity Group Dutch Literature. My research focuses on the shifting appreciation of the heritage of the sixties. The cultural transformation that commenced in this mythical decade has been of major normative influence on society, particularly in the socio-cultural domain. Many of the perceived achievements considered natural in this day and age are associated with the democratizing and emancipatory developments of the sixties. However, in contemporary society, this heritage of the sixties has been subject to debate. Using the sequential adaptations of literary texts from the sixties – e.g. the novel Turks fruit (1969), the subsequent movie (1973) and musical (2006) of the same name – I will try to trace and explain the continuous (re)construction of the myth of the sixties. This project is hereby affiliated with the discipline of adaptation studies: adaptations are understood as reflexive spaces where implicit and/or explicit ideological assumptions are being reconsidered. In doing so, it can be shown how literary texts from the sixties enter into a discussion with their contemporary counterparts and how adaptations pass on the heritage of the sixties in an altered form. Karen Ghonem‐Woets, Emergent Cultural Literacy: Assimilating Children’s Literature. Morality and Religion Supervisor: W.L.H. van Lierop | Universiteit van Tilburg 2011‐2015 This NWO funded project at Maastricht University and the University of Tilburg develops evidence‐based criteria for selecting picture books that induce the emergence of cultural literacy in the very young. It pays due attention to the fact that text appropriation obeys a different logic in four‐ to eight‐year‐olds than in older readers. Rather than investigating the new work in the light of familiar works, young children assimilate texts by doing things with them such as singing, dancing, or engaging in symbolic action and play. Texts will be more effectively assimilated if they can be embedded within regularly recurrent routines and cultural or religious celebrations. The pragmatic contexts of routines and rituals within which children make their first acquaintance with crucial texts spark off the process of cultural socialization in the very young. These contexts have become multi‐cultural and multi‐religious in contemporary globalizing society, which places new demands on the nature of cultural literacy. Assimilation is further enhanced by certain (inter) textual features that evoke these contexts on the one hand while chiming in with the developmental features of the intended audience on the other. These three shaping factors set us on the track of specific criteria of ‘canonicity’, i.e. the potential to become lastingly popular. This program wants to specify, implement and validate these crucial features of canonicity, in order to gain closer insight into the assimilation of children’s literature. It comprises three projects dealing with morality and religion (Karen Ghonem), poetry (Annette de Bruijn), and narrative texts (Inge Verouden) respectively. These projects operate within a joint intervention program that introduces a preliminary selection of texts into the first grades of primary school. As emergent cultural literacy is governed by pragmatic, literary and developmental factors, it can only be adequately investigated through methods deriving from the humanities and the social sciences. Hence, this program combines tools for hermeneutic validation with methods for experimental validation. Emy Koopman, Reading Suffering. An Empirical Enquiry into Emotional, Intellectual and Ethical Responses to Narratives of Mental and Physical Pain. Supervisor: Susanne Janssen | Leiden University 2011–2015 Emy Koopman's doctoral project Reading Suffering – An Empirical Enquiry into Emotional, Intellectual and Ethical Responses to Narratives of Pain (preliminary title) aims to substantiate and qualify scholarly claims about literature’s ethical potential through empirical research among readers. While recently there has been considerable progress in the area of reader response research (e.g. Bortolussi & Dixon, 2003; Mar, Oatley & Peterson, 2009), it is still far from clear how text and reader characteristics interact to establish 'ethical' effects like empathy and reflection. The present project seeks to take both the style of the text, especially its use of 'foregrounding' (cf. Miall & Kuiken, 1994; Kuiken, Miall & Sikora, 2004), and a number of personal characteristics of readers into account. The proposed study consists of a series of experiments on reader responses to narratives of suffering, followed by a qualitative study on the same subject. Texts on suffering can be expected to elicit emotional and ethical responses toward the depicted ‘victims’, both positive and negative. In the experiments, excerpts from novels will be used, while participants in the qualitative study will be required to read one or multiple novels completely. The study will compare responses to ‘highly valued’ literary texts with responses to popular nonfiction texts by less critically valued authors, and to a (control) group of informative texts on the same subject. The following general questions will be addressed: which personality characteristics and which features in the narratives (content and form) make people more responsive to narrative texts on suffering? How is the relation between emotional responses aimed at the content of the text (so-called 'narrative emotions) and emotional responses aimed at the style of the text (so-called 'aesthetic emotions'), and how do narrative and aesthetic emotions impact empathy with others and reflection?

Gonzalo Maier The Politics of Irony in the Postdictatorial Novel (Argentina and Chile, 1973 – today) Supervisors: Maarten Steenmeijer and Brigitte Adriaensen | Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen 20112015 This project departs from existing research on the representation of violence in the postdictatorial literature in the Cono Sur (Balderston 1999, Corbatta 1999, Wirshing 2009). We define the ‘postdictatorial novel’ with Avelar (2000) as a novel concerned with the experience of the dictatorship in the Cono Sur, more specifically in Argentina and Chile, during or after respectively Videla’s (1976-1983) or Pinochet’s (1973-1990) regime. I will focus on a selective corpus of five authors in which irony plays a prominent role. The close readings of irony in these novels will combine insights from traditional rhetorical and narratological analyses of irony (Booth 1974, Hamon 1996, Muecke 1969) with the discursive scope worked out by Hutcheon (1994) and Barker (2001). The polemical reception of several of these novels (f.i. Los pichiciegos by Fogwill and Los topos by Bruzzone), precisely because of their ambiguous relation to irony, will receive special attention. Anne-Fleur van der Meer, Narrating the Aching Self: Representations of Depression in Contemporary Autobiographies. Supervisor: B.J. Andrew Niemeyer Merijn Oudenampsen, Populism with Dutch Characteristics Supervisor: ? In an essay entitled, The rediscovery of ideology; return of the repressed in media studies, Stuart Hall traced a development in social science from the debate on mass culture at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, towards what he terms the behavioural and pluralist tradition, a paradigm increasingly challenged in the seventies by ideology-critical and social

constructivist approaches. Surprisingly, most of the literature on Dutch populism follows uncritically in the footsteps of mass culture theory (Rob Riemen 2010) and behavioral science (Houtman et al. 2008, Duyvendak et al. 2008, Bovens 2008). The problem of these existing studies is that they waste little time on discussing what populism actually is, how it functions, how it has managed to gain popular appeal, and how it relates to wider changes in society. This research aims to address these shortcomings through a social constructivist analysis of the rise of populism in the Netherlands, applying the work of Laclau, Mouffe, Bourdieu and Foucault to the Dutch context. It starts from the premise that we should see populism, not as a reflection of the opinions of the electorate, but rather, as a political technique that involves the imaginary construction of the electorate that it claims to represent. The research will investigate this claim through the discursive analysis of a series of media events. Lisanne Snelders, The Dynamics of Literary Heritage: The Case of the Dutch East Indies. Carlos van Tongeren , The Politics of Irony in the Latin American Crime Novel (1976 - today) Supervisor: Maarten Steenmeijer and Brigitte Adriaensen | Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen 2011-2015 Part of the Vidi-project ‘The Politics of Irony in Contemporary Latin-American Literature on Violence’ The crime novel is a mayor literary genre in Latin America. It is related to different social and historical contexts (the dictatorships in the Southern Cone, political repression and censorship in Mexico and Cuba, etc.) and has historically been used to denounce political repression, corruption and other forms of violence. An important characteristic of Latin American crime narratives is their frequent use of irony and humour for the representation of violent social and political contexts. Even though violence has been recognized as one of the defining parameters of current Latin American societies, the relationship between violence and irony, humour and laughter has not yet been sufficiently examined. This PhD-project will therefore analyse the functions and meanings of irony and humour in the work of some of the most representative authors of the crime novel in Latin America. On the one hand, the project will interrogate the extent to which comical, humorous and ironic representations of violence may be understood as discursive and politically charged strategies that express senses of denunciation, abjection, mourning, and trauma. On the other, the project will analyse regional traditions of the crime genre comparatively, and ask how regional differences are related to certain national traditions in the use of irony, humour and laughter (black humour in Mexico, the so-called choteo in Cuba). Since theorists of irony and humour have stressed that interpreters have a crucial role in making irony “happen”, this project will finally ask how the transnational contexts of production and reception of Latin American crime novels may influence (our understanding of) the functions of irony and humour in these texts . I will explore the contemporary (2000-onward) phenomenon of “hybrid” works of literature: texts that foreground materiality and (typographic) design as a palpable and structural dimension of the narrative. I hope to show how the alleged threat posed to the literary novel by digital technologies and the dire status of the book as reflected in digitization theories, here become a source of creativity and formal experimentation. This project offers an integrated analysis of the genre, analyzing how and why it recycles modernist techniques of collage, montage, and typography within the constraints of linear narration. I aim to trace and integrate the history and contemporary practice of hybrid fiction and analyze how, to what extent and why these works adapt or transform our notions of textuality, literariness and narrativity, and thus inspire new ways of reading. Geertjan de Vugt , The Rhetoric of Authenticity in Politics and Literature Supervisors: Odile Heynders and Jan Blommaert | Tilburg University 2010-2014 The aim of this project is to study the relationship between politics and aesthetics on an everyday micro-political level. It does so by tracing a genealogy of dandyism, in which 'dandyism' is taken as the nexus under which a whole set of problematic relationships come together. Under the name of dandyism one could trace ideas on the relationship between politics and life, life and aesthetics and politics and aesthetics. Starting with debates from the beginning of the nineteenth-century up to the present emergence of so-called populist politics, this genealogy claims that contemporary politics can best be understood from a ‘dandyist paradigm.’ Puck Wildschut, Mysterious Machinery: a linguistic approach to Nabokov's narrative strategies Supervisors: Prof. Sophie Levie and Prof. Helen de Hoop (CLS) Start: September 1, 2012 (HLCS: Studying Criticism And Reception Across Borders) , My PhD project, Mysterious Machinery, investigates the workings of selected narrative strategies in the novels Lolita (1955) and Pale Fire (1962) by Vladimir Nabokov, and especially how these strategies are employed to set out paths of preferred reading. The methodological framework proposed in this research project will offer new insights into the narrative mechanics at work in Lolita and Pale Fire, due to its interdisciplinary approach. Theory and method from both literary studies (more specifically stylistics) and linguistics (more specifically cognitive and functional
18
OSL Jaarverslag 2012
linguistics) will be applied to achieve the project's key objective of describing and analyzing the stylistic devices in these novels and explaining the ensuing stylistic effects. Lolita and Pale Fire evolve around the theme of authors and narrators, trying to persuade readers, to read the text/texts presented to them in certain ways. Moreover, these narrators primarily plead their causes through an idiosyncratic use of stylistic devices. In accordance with this profound ‘reader-oriented' aspect of Nabokov's novels, the stylistic devices and effects which will be critically analyzed are selected based on their ability to involve and immerse readers with and in fictional narratives. Consequently, I will describe and analyze communicative foregrounding; the interaction of modality and narrative point of view; and emotion conveyance. Above all, the project aims to show how these devices function in relation to each other in Nabokov's novels and, accordingly, how this interaction shapes processes of reading. In doing so, Mysterious Machinery aims to enrich existing knowledge about the nature of narratives and narrativity. It aims to provide linguists with new insights into the workings of literary language within the context of longer narratives, and to give impetus to the exhaustive study of literary works within the field of literary studies. Marieke Winkler, Critics Reviewing Criticism. Literary Criticism versus Literary Reviewing in the Netherlands, 1880-present Supervisors: J.H.Th.Joosten and M.P.J.Sanders | Radboud University Nijmegen 2012-2016 The differentiation between the praxis of descriptive literary criticism (literatuurwetenschap) and normative reviewing (literatuurkritiek) is well accepted in the Netherlands while at the same time much disputed. The project ‘Critics Reviewing Criticism’ aims at describing and analyzing the relationship and interference between the fields of criticism and reviewing for the period between 1880 and the present by analyzing the work of authors who combined an academic position with a function as reviewer within the literary field (for example: Albert Verwey, Hans Gomperts and Wiel Kusters). How did these authors reflect on their double-natured activities and how did their theoretical assumptions relate to their actual self-presentation in both fields? Hence, the project aims at a diachronic investigation of the interference between literary criticism and literary reviewing while at the same time examining the ways in which the authors considered perceived their academic role and the function and goal of their scholarly (or: academic) practice.

Start in 2010 Arnout De Cleene, Outsiderliteratuur in België, 1968-2008. Literary Entrepreneurship and Self-fashioning between Amsterdam and Orange Supervisor E.M.P. Sara Polak, The First Modern Media President: Franklin D. Roosevelt's Image in Public History and Memory Supervisors: P.Th.G.M. Liebregts and A. Fairclough | Leiden University 2010-2015 With Washington and Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt is one of the three most popular presidents in US history. President from 1933 to 1945, Roosevelt led the country during a long and crucial period in its history, but the images of him in widely disseminated films, novels, documentaries, museums, biographies, and memorials, often portray him as more heroic and authentic than historically justified. Roosevelt is often viewed as the first modern media president; he was the first to hold radio speeches in which he addressed the American citizens very personally, and the first to hold press conferences, spontaneously answering journalists’ questions. However, Roosevelt was also a modern media politician in the sense that he carefully – and very

successfully – managed his future image. This research looks at Roosevelt’s methods for doing this and their long-term effects. On the other hand, it will study deviations between public representations of Roosevelt and historical evidence. Emanuelle Rodrigues dos Santos titel ? Supervisor: Paulo de Medeiros | Utrecht University 2010-2014 My research project studies how national identities are represented on postcolonial novels of the Portuguese speaking African countries published within the first decade of the 21st century. This investigation, an exercise in the field of comparative studies within literatures written in Portuguese, dialogues with the Brazilian epistemology in the field by its aim to refresh a long lasting discussion that focuses on the ties between literature and society that analyzes the role of literature in the processes of nation-building of these states after their independence from colonial dominance in the mid seventies. Thus, through using the tools offered by postcolonial theory, the current research investigates how the most recent literary works of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe show changes in their ways to imagine the nation, what works as indicator of deeper changes in the material and social spheres, whose scrutiny makes itself imperative for the building of knowledge about Africa. Wouter Schrover, The Art of Dying. The Representation of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide in Contemporary Literature and Film. Supervisors: Ben Peperkamp, Arko Oderwald Heidi de Mare, Dick Schram | Vrije Universiteit 20102014 Euthanasia and assisted suicide are not only much-debated issues in the academic literature and the popular media, they also feature in various national and international works of contemporary narrative fiction. The proposed research will explore the ways in which euthanasia and assisted suicide are represented in contemporary novels and feature films. Narratology will be deployed to systematically examine a representative corpus of novels and films from four different dimensions: the ethical/philosophical dimension, the biomedical/scientific dimension, the medical-anthropological dimension and the judicial/social dimension. The research will show first of all how literature and film offer engaging perspectives on the merciful death, introducing specific values concerning this multidimensional issue. Secondly, it will demonstrate how narrative fiction may intervene in and contribute to the public debates on this subject. It will apply intertextual analyses to determine how literature and film are able to enter into a dialogue with different discourses on death and dying. Thirdly, it will highlight the potentially important role of narrative fiction in society.

Start in 2011 Laura Michiels, Tennessee Williams's Metatheatre Supervisor: Johan Callens | Vrije Universiteit Brussel 2011-2014 This project deals with self-reflexivity in the theatre of Tennessee Williams (1911-1983), with excursions into his fiction when the dramas’ genealogy requires this. Even though the playwright, throughout his oeuvre, self-consciously dealt with the medium of his own dramaturgy as well as the theatre, this aspect to Williams’s work remains unexplored in its systematicity. Some scholarly attention has been paid to the artist figures but an analysis of their functionality within an overall metatheatrical aesthetics still needs to be made. The proposed study will not only examine the author’s work in itself but aims to place the plays within the framework of an American tradition of self-reflective drama. Besides taking into account Williams’s dramatic texts, the project will consider newly available letters, essays and notes, to assess how the artistcharacters echo, modulate, shape or shift their creator’s ideas concerning the nature and function of art in its relation to society. Finally, because the texts under scrutiny were written to be performed, the study will take into consideration selected contemporary stagings of the plays and investigate how these, for better or worse, articulate the self-reflexivity inherent in Williams’s work. Simon Halink, In the Absence of Europe. Romantic Nationalism, Eddic Mythology, and the Repaganization of the Icelandic Mind 1850-1944 Supervisor: Monika Baar | Universiteit van Groningen 2011-2015 Ever since I mastered in Modern History at the University of Utrecht, the subject matter of my MA thesis (the image of Iceland in Nazi Germany) has inspired me to continue research in the field of imagology and the complex interaction between cultural identity, literature, and memory. Last September, I started my work as a Ph.D. candidate at the Graduate School of the Humanities of Groningen University, Research Institute for the Study of Culture. Here, I will be focusing on the secular repaganization of the Icelandic mind in the wake of emerging Romantic nationalism and the construction of a quintessentially Icelandic national identity between ca. 1850 and 1944. The role occupied by history, landscape and memory (in the case of Iceland predominantly the venerated Sagas and the Saga steads as lieux de mémoire) in this imagological process has been thoroughly examined, but the less obvious influence of Eddic mythology, situated beyond time and space and therefore less tangible, has not. My profoundly interdisciplinary research project

will focus on the replacement of Nordic and Germanic (Wagnerian) paradigms in Edda reception with national Icelandic ones, and the othering of primordial (pagan?) Icelandicness in the face of overarching concepts like Europe, Scandinavia, or Modernity. The invention of mythscapes in new folklore and literature, and thus the anti-modern undoing of enlightened and rational modes of reading the landscape, will be paramount to our understanding of the full scope of this Romantic shift in Icelandic self-representation. Supervisors: E.M.A. van Boven and E.H.R.
