readers
Altogether more
than 622 000 individuals have read our articles and taken our tests, more than 2 million times, on our website www.tudatosvasarlo.hu, where we encourage them to live in a more sustainable way and give them useful information on how to do so. Beside additions to contents, the homepage www.tudatosvasarlo.hu also had a makeover. Our thematic quarterly magazine, ‘Tudatos Vásárló’ (Conscious Consumer) covered the following topics: beauty care, fish consumption, spring and autumn vitamins, and the role of cooking in sustainable living. The magazine reached 29 000 readers; four in five readers have changed their lifestyle to a more sustainable one upon the inspiration of the magazine. The last issue was published in December 2011; we have stopped publishing the print edition. www.tudatosvasarlo.hu/magazin
84 650 students
In 2011, too, we were the Hungarian editor and
distributor partner of the ‘Európa Naptár‘ (Europe Calendar) booklet aimed at highschool students, prepared by the Brussels-based Generation Europe Foundation. Tens of thousands of secondary school students studied from this booklet about environmental protection, consumer rights and their protection, as well as about the European Union. The publication of the booklet will be suspended after 2012. www.europadiary.eu/docs/edito_hu.pdf

In our ethical rating of companies called
‘Cégmérce’, in 2011 we evaluated and ranked the environmental and social achievements of 50 enterprises, companies that make cosmetics, computer parts, cooking oil, and also drugstores from the perspective of business ethics and sustainability. The website displaying the ethical ranking of the businesses received almost 30.000 clicks in 2011. www.cegmerce.hu
10 databases
We would like to promote the spread of a sustainable
lifestyle by providing increasing amounts of useful information; therefore we organise the information relating to conscious consumption into different databases. In 2011, close to 30 000 people were interested in them. For conscious eaters, we maintain the database detailing food additives and E-numbers in a searchable format and the calendar of seasonal fresh produce. The database of gene banks and landraces collections provides information for our conscious gardener friends. We have also published a list of companies that conduct animal testing for cosmetics purposes, and the contact details of

product tests In 2011 we helped conscious consumers make better
decisions by testing 9 product groups and services from the point of view of sustainability. We scrutinized deodorants, sun creams, baby diaper rash creams, baby wipes, chocolate rabbits, canned tuna fish, food home delivery services and beaches. Some of our tests were run in accredited laboratories, while in other cases we formed our ranking based on information available about the products. Almost 60 000 readers were interested in our tests in 2011. www.tudatosvasarlo.hu/tartalom/article/80

lectures and workshops from ACC staff
we held workshops and gave presentations on the following topics: community agriculture (Waldorf School, Szeged), environmentally-friendly cleaning (Ökoszolgálat Foundation), sustainability effects of hypermarkets (Corvinus University, Budapest), sustainable consumption (Moholy-Nagy Art University, Budapest), quick loans, making natural cosmetics. We had altogether more than 1100 participants at our events.
3+1 researches
about the sustainability of
the supermarkets.
We continued our research about the long-term
effects of hypermarkets on society, the environment and the economy, by impact analysis, interviews and the analysis of policy documents. In 2011, we completed our analysis of hypermarkets’ long term environmental, economic and social impact, our research comparing their Hungarian and international legal regulation, and the analysis of the purchase policies of commercial chains. The scientific review Society and Economy published our 2010 research results examining hypermarkets’ ethical codifications.

expert involvements.
We strive to use our expertise to
contribute to issues that are important with regard to our aims. In 2011 we were the professional partners of the ‘I LOVE GOOD’ sustainable consumption campaign of the Nap-Hold Egyesület (Sun-Moon Association) in Veszprém county, and we also began collaboration with the Zöld Sarok (Green Corner) concerning the sustainability qualification of Hungarian restaurants. We participated in a forum about the National Sustainable Development Council’s aims and also in OTP Bank’s forum evaluating its social responsibility report. In 2010 we participated in the following bodies as experts: Consumer Protection Case Committee of the Hungarian Parliament, Hungarian UNESCO Committee, Hungarian Financial Supervisory Authority’s Civil Forum, Global Action Plan International.

festival-goers
We organised Local Product Festivals in
Esztergom, Győr, Székesfehérvár, where visitors could meet local growers, establish a personal relationship with them and taste their products. We hope that they still go to the market and still consume local foods. We organised the festivals with the help of the Esztergomi Környezetkultúra Egyesület (Esztergom Environmental Culture Association), Reflex Association in Győr and Fúzió Association in Székesfehérvár.

ACC’s ‘Conscious Consumers’ Department Store’ exhibition in May-June 2011, in the Gozsdu Court in centre of Budapest. The exhibition was installed by the Cellux Group, the Magyar Kétfarkú Kutya Párt (Hungarian Two Tailed Dog Party) and the 1000% art group. At first sight, the exhibition seemed to be a supermarket, but when visitors took a pair of “consumption-reducing glasses” at the entrance, they could see the new horizons of a new culture of consumption. The Conscious Consumers’ Department Store made a critical point about consumption habits and proposed solutions at the same time. In the exhibition we conducted 52 guided tours for school groups.

important messages
for popularizing the use of tap water. In
2011 we produced a set of two little cards which could be used in bars and restaurants.
10
Association of Conscious Consumers
ACC2011 When the conscious consumer asked for a glass of tap water and got it without any trouble, they left a blue card to support the place, but if they had difficulty getting water, they left a red card meaning that they would come next time if they will be served with ‘simply’ tap water.

‘Buy Nothing Day’
also in November 2011. “Consumption is not
equal to happiness” – this was the main message for the media distributed by the ACC’s press communication, together with practical tips for how to ‘fast’—how to refrain from consumption. News about the campaign was published in 31 media platforms and we gave interviews to several important national and commercial radio channels. www.nevasaroljsemmitnap.hu
1 campaign
for equity.
In 2010 ACC joined the international
MakeITFair Programme that is coordinated by the Dutch Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO), whose objective is to improve working conditions and reduce environmental damage in the IT sector. In 2011 we organised street-action, trained volunteers and student journalists, published a research report, 3 publications and 2 short films.

Community building
160 workshops for sustainable households, training in 20 eco teams
were accomplished and helped to
make life greener in Budapest and its suburbs. By the end of the program, members of
11
Association of Conscious Consumers
ACC2011 the eco teams reduced their household and food waste by 25%, their electricity and natural gas consumption by one sixth and tap water consumption by 33% and they kept 10% less chemical products than before. ‘Ökokörök’ is the Hungarian adaptation of the ”EcoTeams” programme of an international NGO called Global Action Plan International (GAP). www.okokorok.hu
150 walkers
Imagine Budapest and ACC organised 5 walks for a more
liveable urban environment. The trip started from the water reservoir inside Gellért Hill, then we could taste the spring water of Rudas Bath and we walked to Uncle Elek’s fountain next to the Tabán as well. The trip ended in the Medical History Museum.
Learning and development
49 training days
In 2011 colleagues of ACC deepened their knowledge
and skills through almost 50 training days. They educated themselves on the following topics and with the following methods, to name a few: organisational development, campaign organising training, community agriculture, sustainable consumption, herb knowledge, human ecology. We participated in the following trainings: „Civil aktivizmus” szeminárium – Amerikai Nagykövetség (Civil Activism workshop – US Embassy), Delfin vezetésfejlesztő program – Tanácsadók a Fenntartható fejlődésért (Dolphin Leadership Program – Advisers for the Sustainable Development), Európai Ökológiai Kongresszus, Fenntartható fogyasztás konferencia – Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem (European Ecology Congress, Sustainable Consumption Conference – Corvinus University, Budapest), Gyógynövényismereti tanfolyam – Hieronymus Bock Hagyományos Gyógynövényismereti Iskola (Herb Knowledge Training – Hieronymus Bock Traditional Herb School), Helyi termékek a közétkeztetésben – Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem (Local product in the public food plan – Corvinus University, Budapest) Humánökológia tanfolyam - Helyi Kisközösségek Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.
