Het gebouw imponeert door de indruk van beweging. n September 2012, the Department of Hérault opened a new public facility at the north-west of Montpellier: pierresvives, the city of knowledge and sport for all. Flowing geometrical lines, sharp features and superimposed planes, volume amplified with cantilevers, wavy forms, curved, sharp edges, play with transparency and veins irrigate the building with juice of knowledge. Gold, dark gray, smoky green, black cantilevers... The light plays with the colors and the materials, and it hooks, sparkles, illuminates...
The building is imprinted with a sense of movement. The interior reveals other sensations: volume of both delicate and towering walls, inclined curved walls reacting to curves,

vertiginous ceilings aspiring the spectacle and attracting bodies towards the heights, transparent glazing brings the outside inside the lair of the building, a ceiling of milky waves lit by the soft indirect light incorporated into the ceilings.

Zaha Hadid has envisaged the building as a ‘tree of knowledge’. It presents itself to visitors’ eyes, rooted in the proximity universe of Paillade neighborhoods, Petit Bard and Cevennes, but more broadly, its roots branch out to all the department: here it collects its memory, inspiring itself to the contact with sports clubs, local media libraries and colleges. In return, pierresvives irrigates the whole territory, media libraries, municipal archives, sports committees and colleges. It offers its researchers rich and dense resources and network engineering, and welcomes professionals and users to reflect and think together.

pierresvives (written in one word and not capitalized) will constitute a new sign in the northwest of the city. Confident in the design of this equipment to the Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, and internationally recognized winner of multiple awards including the prestigious Pritzker Prize, the Department wanted to give this sector a representative symbol of the great architecture of the twenty-first century. The building will house the department of medialibrary, Hérault Sport, and the department of Hérault Archives: 60 km of archives to be preserved in a drastical manner (some dating back to the XI century) in concrete silos providing humidity and controlled temperature; near 300,000 works (books, CD, DVD ...), an amphitheater, exhibition halls, a strong determination to engage in the digital revolution... n

The interior of the New York building HL23, named after the nearby High Line Park, was designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen. Its construction contributed to the transformation of the urban landscape with its silhouette of steel and glass which inverts the ratio surfacearea:floor. The shape of the building affects the eleven residences of which it is composed, with windows strategically placed to offer panoramic views of the city and the river.

cantilever beams, HL23 exploits the benefits of natural light and the technical specifications of materials to provide ample space for future occupants. An unexpected silhouette with a façade in metal and glass: the options taken from the American architect revealed aesthetic choices, certainly, but also his willingness to express himself via sustainable development and energy saving. The fourteen floors fit perfectly together into the urban texture and in the surrounding public space. n
