Bevezetés Kedves Hallgatónk! Ön most egy önálló tanulást segítő tantárgyi kalauz bevezetőjét olvassa.
A tantárgyi kalauzra, ennek a bevezetőjét tanulmányozza most;
•
A tankönyvre: Sue Robbins, First Insights into Business, Students’ Book, Longman, 2004.;
•
A könyvhöz tartozó munkafüzetre: Kevin Manton, First Insights into Business, Workbook, Longman, 2004.;
•

A távtanulás rugalmasan alkalmazkodik a hétköznapi életviteléhez is.
szánjon időt és energiát a tanulásra;
•
tanuljon rendszeresen és terv szerint, lehetőleg azonos időben, amikor nem zavarhatják;
•
teremtsen nyugodt körülményeket mielőtt a tananyag feldolgozásába kezd;
•
készítsen elő minden szükséges eszközt (szakirodalmat, ezt a kalauzt, egy füzetet, írószert);
•
a hanganyag meghallgatásához megfelelő lejátszót (a tapasztalat szerint a kazettás magnó praktikusabb a nyelvtanuláshoz);
•
főzzön magának egy csésze forró kávét vagy teát, és ha megitta, vágjon bele a tanulásba!
Bízunk benne, hogy a siker érdekében kitartóan, rendszeresen és eredményesen tanul majd. Cserébe megígérjük Önnek: mire a tananyag végére ér, felkészült lesz a kollokviumra. A tantárgy kreditértéke 3, tehát kb. 90 órányi tanulásra lesz szüksége a tananyag elsajátításához.
Az általános gazdasági szaknyelv Távoktatás-Külgazdasági szakon kötelező tantárgy a harmadik évfolyam második félévében. A kalauz speciálisan a távoktatási képzésben résztvevő tanulóknak készült, de bárki használhatja, aki a tantárgy rejtelmeiben szeretne elmerülni.

A tantárgy felvételének követelménye A tantárgy felvételéhez Önnek rendelkeznie kell az angol nyelv középfokú ismeretével. Ebben a kurzusban ugyanis már a gazdasági szaknyelv alapjaival kezdünk foglalkozni. Ha szeretné megtudni, rendelkezik-e ennek megfelelő középfokú nyelvismerettel, azt javasoljuk: végezze el szintfelmérésként a tantárgyi kalauz függelékében található tesztet. A megoldást a kalauz legvégén találja.
• • • • • • • •
alkalmazni az üzleti nyelv alapvető szókincsét; helyesen alkalmazni a nyelvtani szabályokat; elolvasni és ismertetni gazdasági témájú idegen nyelvű cikkeket, szakszöveget; meghatározni és alkalmazni a gazdasági alapfogalmakat idegen nyelven; értelmezni és kifejteni az idegen nyelven írt gazdasági definíciókat; írásban röviden kidolgozni az elsajátított gazdasági témát idegen nyelven; megfelelő gazdasági szakkifejezéseket alkalmazni az általános gazdasági témákról szóló írásművekben; hallás után felidézni és értelmezni egy idegen nyelvű gazdasági témájú szöveget.
Mit kell tudnia a tantárgy lezárásáról? A tantárgy lezárásának követelményeit ezen általános célokhoz igazítjuk. Nyelvismereti teszt (80 pont). Javasolt idő: 60-70 perc Lehetséges feladattípusok: •
lyukas szöveg: megadott szavak közül a mondatok hiányos részeibe illők kiválasztása úgy, hogy 2-3 szó nem való sehová, mert azok feleslegesek;
•
párosítás: szakmai kifejezések, szókapcsolatok létrehozása megadott szavakból, valamint megadott definíciók párosítása megadott fogalmakkal;

•
szakmai tartalmú állítások igaz-hamis voltának megállapítása;
•
szóképzés: megadott szavak megfelelő formájának beillesztése megadott mondatokba;
•
szinonima, antonima keresés;
•
nyelvhelyességet ellenőrző feladatok szakmai szókinccsel, például:
•
alakítsa át az adott mondatot megkezdett mondatok befejezésével úgy, hogy a mondat értelme ugyanaz legyen (megfelelő struktúrát használva);
•
igeátalakítás: tegye a zárójelben lévő igéket a megfelelő formába az adott mondatokban;
•
megfelelő elöljárószavak, kötőszavak behelyezése mondatokba.
2. Írott szöveg értelmezése (20 pont). Javasolt idő: 20-30 perc Szöveg kiválasztása: a kurzusban előforduló témák alapján; A szöveg terjedelme:1000-1300 leütés (kb. fél oldal). Lehetséges feladattípusok: •
globális értést vizsgáló feladat: feleletválasztás (A, B, C változat közül válassza ki, hogy miről szól a szöveg);
•
állítások igaz-hamis voltának megállapítása a szöveg alapján;
•
szinonima, antonima keresés a szövegben: megadott szavak alapján, vagy másik lyukas szöveg kiegészítése;
•
feleletválasztásos feladat: 3 tartalmi állításból válassza ki a helyeset a szöveg alapján;
•
válaszadás kérdésekre röviden, megadott számú szóval.
Az írásbeli kollokvium osztályozása ötfokozatú skálán történik a következők szerint: •
60% alatt – elégtelen (1);
•
61 - 70% – elégséges (2);
•
71 - 80% – közepes (3);
•
81 - 90% – jó (4);
•
91 - 100% – jeles (5).

(Ilyenkor a kazettás eszköz a célravezetőbb.) Amikor úgy gondolja, megoldotta a feladatot, vagy végképp úgy érzi, úgysem ért többet, akkor nézze meg hátul a szövegleírást, ami egyébként nagyon sokat segíthet a végén. Onnan is tanuljon hasznos kifejezéseket! (Jelölje ki, húzza alá, írja ki külön stb.) Bizonyára észreveszi majd, hogy nem vesszük a tankönyv minden egyes sorát. Ez azért van, mert ebben a tanulási formában nehezen oldható meg az interakció, az ellenőrzés. A most kimaradó feladatok általában pármunkák, csoportmunkák, gondolatébresztő feladatok, sokszor kérdések formájában.

Unit 1 Customers I. Time indication: 7 hours
Introduction As we are studying business English we will start our studies in this course by dealing with one of the two main partners in business, namely the customer. We live in a consumer society, we like buying things very much and we are sure it happens almost every day that you are considered to be a customer. And of course you have your own expectations. On the other hand you may happen to appear on the other side and then you have to meet the customers’ needs. The profitability of your business depends on the customers’ spending power i.e. how much money they spend in your business. Consequently it’s obvious that you start to compete to attract as many customers as you can. And what is the way of it? Good customer care. That’s what we are going to deal with in the first unit. Please prepare a CD/cassette player for use right now at the very beginning. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • •
be familiar with some key vocabulary of customer care; compare different attitudes to customer care; be able to form direct and indirect questions; be able to distinguish between the style of the two types of the questions; recognize when capital letters are used.
Part 1 - Key Vocabulary and Lead-in Open your Students’ Book on p. 4.
First of all get acquainted with some very important notions on this topic. Read and listen to the Key Vocabulary section. This is a very good opportunity to check your pronunciation. Don’t forget to check the meanings if it’s necessary. (Sometimes it’s better to find it out from the context, because you won’t always find everything in dictionaries.) The primarily aim is to understand what you have read, you don’t need to be a professional translator. You would like to become a business person if we are not mistaken. If you have finished reading and listening, please do a task which will involve some further reading about different types of customer care.

Self assessment question 1
Do Lead-in on pp. 4-5, and answer the 1st question on p. 4. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Now we would like you to work in the Workbook to check what you remember from the first part. Self assessment question 2
Do Vocabulary/1 on p. 6. Key – Self assessment question 2 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
Did you remember well?
Part 2 - Cross-cultural Comparison We are going back to the Students’ Book. Open it on p. 5.
Read and listen again. After reading the 5 situations in the box please do the next task. Self assessment question 3
Do Cross-cultural Comparison/2 on p. 5. The answer to the last question is subjective. We will give our opinion about it, and you can compare it with yours. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Did we have similar opinions? If yes, we may belong to the same culture (country). But attitudes to the same customer care may differ in different cultures.
Part 3 - Language Focus and Language Practice As you know, you are supposed to be familiar with almost all the grammar. (That was a prerequisite of starting this course.) Still we are going to deal with some connotations in grammar. Open your Book on p. 6
Asking questions is very important even in business. We are going to deal with two types of questions (direct and indirect), and the difference between them is their form (the word order in them) and the style. For the next task you will need your cassette/CD player.

Self assessment question 4
Do Language Focus/2 on p. 6. Please listen to the right part (1.3) on the cassette/CD. It is a telephone conversation about a fitness centre. While listening put a tick in the right box signalling which type of question you could hear. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Did you notice that in direct questions you must use the ordinary word order for questions and that the style of it is quite informal? And did you also notice that if you want to be more formal, more polite, you should use an indirect question (beginning e.g. with ’Could you tell me…’) and the word order is the same as in statements? You will have an opportunity now to practise it. Self assessment question 5
Please do Language Practice/1 on p. 8. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Self assessment question 6
Do Language Practice/2 on p. 8. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Check your answers to task 5 and 6 as well as your pronunciation by listening to 1.5 on the cassette/CD, too. For further practice take your Workbook now. Self assessment question 7
Do Language Practice/1 on p. 7. Key – Self assessment question 7 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
Do you feel the difference between the two types of questions? Self assessment question 8
Check your feeling and do Language Practice/2 on p. 7. Key – Self assessment question 8 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
If you are still uncertain about questions, please do the last task about them.

Self assessment question 9
Do Language Practice/3 on p. 8. Key – Self assessment question 9 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
We hope that all your uncertainty has disappeared by now. In the following part we are going to do something different.
Part 4 - Writing Go back to your Students’ Book and open it on p. 9.
The usage of capital letters may differ in different languages. It’s obvious that we should do writing correctly. Let’s see when English uses capital letters. Self assessment question 10
Do Writing/1 on p. 9. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Perhaps you are not so surprised. But can you do it in practice? Turn to your Workbook and do the very last task of Unit 1. Self assessment question 11
Do the Writing exercise on p. 8. Key – Self assessment question 11 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
We think you deserve a break now.
Closing This is the end of Unit 1. I hope it was not very monotonous for you and that you could follow the instructions without any difficulty. In the next unit (which, we promise, will be shorter) we are going to do more about customer service, and do some business communication, too.

Unit 2 Customers II. Time indication: 7 hours
Introduction The competition in business today is very intensive. Banks and shops are forced to compete for more and more customers to make more profits to expand their business or just simply to survive. The importance of how they serve their customers is increasing. Let’s have a look at some aspects. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:

Part 1 - Listening Open your Students’ Book on p. 10.
Please prepare the cassette/CD player for use. You will hear a woman and a man talking about their favourite shop and bank. Let’s start with some tasks. Self assessment question 1

Self assessment question 3
Do Listening/3 on p. 10 on your own. You don’t need to listen to anything now. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. If you want to criticise a service strongly, you can use these words, but if you want to remain polite when criticising, it’s better to say the negative form of the opposite of the adjective, like ’The staff are not very friendly.’ instead of saying ’They are unfriendly’. If you like criticising services, don’t forget it. For practising more, please turn to your Workbook. Self assessment question 4
Do Vocabulary/2 on p. 6. Key – Self assessment question 4 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II. Self assessment question 5
Do Vocabulary/3 on p. 7. Key – Self assessment question 5 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. II.
Now you know enough words to express your opinion about a service. In the next part you are going to work on an advertisement.
Part 2 - Reading and Vocabulary Open your Students’ Book on p. 11, please.
The name of the company (Kwik-Fit) about which you are going to read is from Quick fit which refers to their quick service. When you do scanning reading in the next task, you should also have a quick (!) look at the advert, and not read every word but try to find the information to complete the gaps. Self assessment question 6
Please do Reading/1 on p. 11. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Hopefully you could find the right information quickly, and now you will have enough time to read the advert thoroughly, and do the next task. 18

Unit 5 Travel I. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction Do you like travelling? Most people like it. Today, when we speak about the world of Globalization, business people cannot avoid going on business trips, either. Whether they like it or not. So there is a growth in international travel. Scientists of course argue a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of Globalization. Does it mean a triumph of democracy over autocracy? We won’t decide it here now. Let’s travel. Please prepare a CD/cassette player for use right now at the very beginning. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • •
be familiar with some key words concerning travelling; be able to express fixed arrangements in the future; be aware of the layout of the fax; be able to write a fax; get an impression about a business trip to the Far East.
Part 1 - Key Vocabulary and Lead-in How do you prepare for a foreign trip? Business people always have to plan everything carefully because they are short of time. What problem do you think they may face abroad? Let’s see. Open the Students’ Book on p. 24.
Please read and listen to the Key Vocabulary section. Have you ever encountered any problem of cultural differences when you were abroad? If you could understand everything in the Key Vocabulary section, please answer some questions. Self assessment question 1

Do Language Focus/2 on p. 24. If it wasn’t enough to listen to it once, listen again. Now check your answers in the Key at the end of this unit. So you could learn that in spite of its name present continuous can express a future activity, when we want to emphasize that the particular activity is arranged, fixed and will definitely happen in the future. (e.g. when it’s written in your diary or itinerary) Let’s take Rosalind Harrison’s itinerary for example. Self assessment question 3
First do Language Practice/1 on p. 25. Work on your own. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. You can use these phrases in the next task. Self assessment question 4

Which word comes with which word - is not the same. ’Mirror translation’ (word for word translation) does not always help. Moreover, it can mislead you. There’s no other way than trying to memorize word partnerships, and to be able to remember them the best way is to do a lot of tasks. There’s one here for you. Self assessment question 7
Do Vocabulary One/1 on p. 27. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. You agree, don’t you, that when we say ’He runs a seminar’, everybody knows what we mean, and nobody thinks he runs anywhere. To remember word partners even better, let’s put them into context. Self assessment question 8
Do Vocabulary One /2 on p. 27. Work on your own. Use your fantasy. (You can also use some prompts to help you written in the Key of task 7 in brackets.) Hopefully you remember the language for offers and requests. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Compare your ideas with ours. In today’s business you may often have to send an e-mail. But what do you do if you are supposed to send a fax? In the next task you can study its layout and then please finish writing it according to the instructions. Self assessment question 9

First read the questions of the Listening/1. Check if you can understand everything because you will have to be able to answer them. If you know the questions, listen to the text. Is your CD/cassette player still with you? Self assessment question 10
Take notes while answering the questions, and if it’s necessary, listen to it again for checking. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit, too. Could you concentrate, and answer the questions well? If not very well, it may be due to the fact that your vocabulary is not rich enough yet. Enriching it is a task forever... We are trying to help you with this material. But to be able to concentrate more, you will need some relaxation now.
Closing This is the end of Unit 5. We hope you are not only tired, but also have learned a lot. At least how to concentrate. The next unit will also be interesting with a lot of nationalities, and some surprises perhaps…

Now that you know quite a lot of things about the culture of the two countries, where would you like to live and work for a while? Probably in London. Why not have a try? Save your money. You could practise the language, too.
Part 2 - Vocabulary Two and Cross-cultural Comparison Turn to p. 30 in the Students’ Book.
But London is not The centre of the world. Besides it we could travel to several other places to improve our English. Let’s see where, and how we say the adjectives of nationalities for these countries. Self assessment question 3

Were you surprised by any of the answers? If you visit one of these countries, we think it’s worth considering what you can do and what not to be polite. Especially if you go on a business trip to meet a business partner. One more note. When visiting Japan, now you know that it’s not polite to put your partner’s business card in your pocket. But what to do with it then? It is important to keep the card visible and to show you have noticed the content and rank of the card’s owner. Let’s stay with business etiquette in communication.
Part 3 - Business Communication Open your book on p. 31.
For the following tasks you will need your cassette/CD player (and of course your ears and your ability of concentration). Unit 7 Send-in-task Working time/energy indication: 8 hours
Introduction In this unit you are revising the topics we have dealt with so far, and you are going to do vocabulary and grammar exercises concerning these topics. You will get a feedback about the progress you have made, to what extent you are familiar with the material. At the same time this unit offers you an opportunity to prepare for the End Term Test. Before doing the review unit revise the previous 6 units because it will make it easier to remember the material and do your tasks. Language learning is a lot to do with memorising things (especially words), which cannot be done without repetition. It will take you about 4-5 hours (you should do it carefully), and then do the tasks in this unit for which you will need about 2-3 hours. Objectives At the end of this unit you will be able to:
• • • • • • • • •
describe companies shortly; identify and define key words from the units; make enquiries about the FT Group’s training programmes; recall the difference in form and function of present simple and present continuous tenses; describe your future planned activities for a week; find specific information; use capital letters correctly; use techniques of avoiding repetition; present a company shortly.
You will find the exercises to be solved on pages 34-35 in the Student’s Book. Please follow the instructions we will give you which are not always the same as the instructions in the coursebook. Of course you should not write the answers in the book as you will have to send in your tasks for evaluation. Please do the given tasks. Task 1
Work on your own and do Business Review. You can get 2 points for one correct sentence. If you have written 3 correct sentences about 3 companies, the maximum score you will get is 18 points.

Task 2
Work on your own and do Vocabulary Review/1. You do not necessarily have to use a chart form; it is acceptable if you just simply group the words. If you have put each word into the correct list, you can get 18 points. Task 3
Give the definition of the first ten words of the previous task. For each correct definition you can get 2 points so the maximum score you can get in this task is 20 points. Task 4
Add 9 more key words to the lists in task 2 (3 words to each topic-customers, companies, travel). One word is one point so you can get 9 points in this task. Task 5
Do Grammar Review/1.1. One correct question is 2 points. If you were able to ask 5 correct questions, you can get 10 points. Exercise 1.2. and exercise 2 do not need to be done now. Task 6
Do Grammar Review/3. Do not forget to copy the whole exercise to be able to send it in. Each verb in the correct tense is 1 point. Your maximum score here is 6 points. Task 7
Do Grammar Review/4 on p. 35 in the book following our instructions. Fill in the diary pages with things that you are doing next week-one thing for one day. Write notes for yourself. The task you will have to send in is to write down your programme for the week using your notes. So what are you doing on each day? Please answer this question.

Do Writing and Business Communication Review/3. Do the presentation about the company LVMH. You can find information about the company in the chart on p. 21. Answering one given aspect is 3 points. If you have answered all the 4 aspects, you can get 12 points. For the ten tasks you can get 130 points altogether. You have completed one of the requirements of the course if you have done 60% of the tasks successfully.
Format requirements When you send in your task in 4-5 pages meet the following requirements: Word Format; font type: Times New Roman; text font size: 12; line spacing: single; alignment: justified; Save as type: Word Document. Unit 8 Troubleshooting I. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction The title of this unit means dealing with difficult problems. We encounter problems in many fields of life all the time. Perhaps that’s what makes things move forward. Companies are not exceptions. In their case problem solving strategies can help a lot. In this unit we are going to analyse, look for solutions and give advice. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • •
have an insight into a method of analysing companies when they are in trouble; be familiar with some troubleshooting strategies; get acquainted with a way companies may sell cars; be able to find solutions to certain situations; be able to make recommendations.
Part 1 - Key Vocabulary and Lead-in As always, we are going to start with the Students’ Book, and get acquainted with some key concepts on the topic. Remember to bring your cassette/CD player, too. Open your book on p. 36.
Make yourself comfortable, then read and listen to the Key Vocabulary section. If you could understand everything, go on to the Lead-in tasks. Self assessment question 1
Do Lead-in/1 on p. 36. Look at a practical approach of how to solve a problem through the case of an agency for fashion models. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. If you could find the appropriate words, you could understand the text well. Troubleshooters (people who are sent to companies to help with specific problems) often do a SWOT analysis. You already know what the letters stand for. To be able to do the second question more easily, it may be useful to know that it is a tool which helps to monitor how well a company is doing within its economic environment. It assesses

performance not just in the company’s own terms, but against other similar firms. The information helps managers plan and make strategic decisions about the future of the company. Now that you know so much about it, can you complete it for IMG at the time Jonathan Phang joined the company? Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert, your task is just grouping the listed points in Lead-in/2. (Note that often a weakness – such as low profits – can be viewed as an opportunity e.g. to improve sales. So the answer in the Key at the end of the unit is only a suggestion.) Self assessment question 2
Do Lead-in/2 on p. 37 in the book. Work on your own. If you have your own SWOT analysis, compare it with our suggestion in the Key at the end of this unit. To do some more practice, we would like you to open your Workbook. Self assessment question 3

Please do the Reading section on p. 20. Key – Self assessment question 4 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. III.
Probably you think you have read enough, and we hope you agree that it was very useful. Now we are going back to the Students’ Book and do some listening again, so you will need your machine, too.
Part 2 - Language Focus and Language Practice Open your book on p. 38.
In this part you will hear about two types of selling and ways of expressing recommendations. First try to get an overall understanding. Let’s start with some tasks. Self assessment question 5

Self assessment question 6
Do Language Focus/2 on p. 38. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. You must have realised that we use ’should’ or ’ought to’ to make recommendations. Note that we tend to use ’should’ in the negative and question form rather than ’ought to’. We can’t go on without practising. Self assessment question 7
Do Language Practice/1 on p. 39. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Now comes a little bit more productive exercise. And maybe more interesting. Self assessment question 8
Please write a ’should’ sentence for each sentence in Language Practice/2 on p. 39. The following example will help you: You shouldn’t avoid a problem, you should deal with it. Unit 9 Troubleshooting II. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction We have seen that as the world around us is changing, of course new problems are arising. We have to find ways of solving them, too. Let’s stay e.g. with the new social trend, the fact that the number of women drivers is increasing. How can we find out more about the problem? Objectives At the end of this unit you will:

Unit 10 Company History I. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction We already know different types of companies, know a lot about their activities, problems and customer care but we might also be interested in their background, how it all started. In this unit we will look into the history of some companies. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • • •
be aware of the elements that company history includes; be able to say years; be able to form regular and irregular past tense of verbs; be able to form questions and negative sentences in the past tense; be able to pronounce regular past tense in 3 different ways; be able to contrast present and past.
Part 1 - Key Vocabulary and Lead-in Of course the first two things you will need is your Students’ Book and the cassette/CD player. Open your book on pp. 46-47.
Why is company history important and what does it include? You will learn it when you read and listen to the Key Vocabulary section, and after that do the task in Lead-in. You will hear a text about some events of a company you already know, a popular retail company which sells food, clothes, household furnishings and financial products called Marks & Spencer. Self assessment question 1
Please do Lead-in/2 on p. 47. (The pictures are on pp. 46-47) Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Don’t forget how to say years, e.g. 1968-nineteen sixty-eight; 1911-nineteen eleven; but!2005-two thousand and five. And now practise vocabulary in your Workbook.

Part 2 - Language Focus and Language Practice Open your book on p. 47.
You came across Ford in the previous unit. You might be interested to know that Ford bought Volvo in January 1999. The magazine article here refers to some further events in the history of Ford. After reading it, please do the following tasks. Self assessment question 3
Do Language Focus/2 on p. 47. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Self assessment question 4
Do Language Focus/3 on p. 47. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. You are probably aware that you used two types of past tense. (The verb ’built’ was irregular – you must remember the irregular forms one by one –, the other forms – ending in -ed – were regular ones.) We don’t want to teach you past tense here because you are supposed to know everything about it. We would just like to remind you of the right pronunciation of regular forms (we normally pronounce /t/ or /d/ and the only two cases when we pronounce /id/ is when the verb ends in ’t’ or ’d’), and the forms of questions and negative sentences with the auxiliary verb ’did’. But being able to use past tense correctly in each form is very important so we are going to do some practice. Open your book on p. 49.

Unit 11 Company History II. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction In this unit we are staying with history and we are going to get acquainted with the background of two more interesting businesses – one that adapted to our modern ’throwaway’world (we use things once and then throw them away), and another one that is involved in finance, a very popular field today –- and learn techniques to be able to speak about them without monotony. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • •
get acquainted with the history of a French company called Bic and another company called Zurich Financial Services Group; be able to form adjective and noun partners; be able to sequence ideas.
Part 1 - Reading and Vocabulary We’ll start with the Students’ Book and open it on p. 50, please.
Let’s see what products have been developed in our fast-moving world and take the example of Bic which is a household name in business. Household has nothing to do with your house now, you may know that it also means ’famous’, as in our case. First quickly read the text of Reading (for 1 minute). If you have read the text, do the next task. Self assessment question 1
Write three products that Bic makes. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Do you use any of these products? If yes, probably because they are simple to use, you don’t need to bother about cleaning or repairing them when they break down, they are comfortable to use when you travel (you don’t need to bring them back and your luggage is easier) and we can also say that they are not very expensive. And now read the text carefully on p. 50.
After reading it, please do the next task. 69

Do Vocabulary/2 on p. 51. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Note that nouns can function as adjectives like in the term ’product development’. Please do your last vocabulary practice in your Workbook. Self assessment question 5
Do Vocabulary/2 on p. 23. Key – Self assessment question 5 Check your answer in the Key of the Workbook on p. III.
Let’s go back to the Students’ Book immediately but don’t put the Workbook very far.
Part 2 - Writing When you say a story (like the history of a company) your thoughts must be organized, you keep an order to be logical. Look at some useful fillers which help you to put your ideas together. Open your book on p. 52.
Study the usage of fillers carefully in Writing/2 and then do the next three tasks in your Workbook.

Unit 12 Retailing I. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction Following the way of a product first it is manufactured, then it can go to the middlemen before reaching the consumer. That’s what we call the chain of distribution. There are two types of intermediaries: the wholesaler and the retailer. In this unit we are going to deal with the latter one. There are several types of them and there are new trends as well. We’ll have a look at them soon. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • •
get acquainted with the concept of retailing and the types of retail outlets; be able to compare traditional way of shopping with new trends (direct sales); be able to differentiate between countable and uncountable nouns; be able to apply the correct articles (definite, indefinite, zero); be able to pronounce the definite article differently depending on emphasis and position.
Part 1 - Key Vocabulary and Lead-in It’s time to take your Students’ Book and get your cassette/CD player prepared. Open the Students’ Book on p. 56.
Read and listen to the Key Vocabulary section. When you have read and listened to the key concepts do the usual Lead-in task. Shopping has advantages and disadvantages, as everything has. Let’s start with the disadvantages of shopping. Self assessment question 1

Whether a noun is countable or uncountable is a determining factor in the form of nouns in English. First do some relevant tasks in your book. Self assessment question 6
Do Language Focus One/1 on p. 58. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Don’t forget that this category doesn’t depend on the fact whether the thing the noun refers to can be counted or not, but it’s a pure grammatical category, and you should remember the exceptions, too. (e.g. information and advice in our list) The correct usage of articles is difficult for us (Hungarian learners) because they are used completely differently. When Hungarians say a definite article speaking in general, the British don’t. (Szeretem az almát. - I like apples) When the British say an indefinite article with singular countable nouns we don’t necessarily say anything. (I live in a flat. - Lakásban lakom.) Study the examples thoroughly on p. 58 in your Students’ Book (Language Focus One/2).
Please do the next task. Self assessment question 7
Do Language Focus One/2 on p. 58. Try to answer the questions in the yellow box. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. This must have sounded very theoretical. Let’s go into practice. Self assessment question 8

Unit 13 Retailing II. Time indication: 6 hours
Introduction For price-conscious customers the price is the most important thing they consider when they buy things. They study price labels, but at the checkout the cashier or checkout assistant don’t look at them, he/she just reads barcodes and uses a computer. In this unit we will learn what information is included in a barcode, we will pay a visit to IKEA, and study some useful expressions for making a phone call. Objectives At the end of this unit you will:
• • • • •
have information about barcodes; be able to make word patterns which describe how things are packaged; you will be able to express your experience and opinion about shopping facilities in a particular shop on the basis of a text about IKEA; be able to apply 4 relative pronouns correctly; be able to use specific phrases when you make a phone call to a company.
Part 1 - Reading and Vocabulary Two Open your Students’ Book on p. 60.
You have had to do scan reading before. So you could experience that an initial scan can make it easier to understand a text by giving the sense of the whole. A good way to scan is to read the first sentence of each paragraph. Another way is to read the opening and closing paragraphs in a text. Your first task here is scan reading of course. Self assessment question 1
Scan the text in Reading/2 on p. 60 quickly and write in your notebook. What information do barcodes carry? Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. To do the following two tasks you will need to do detailed reading on p. 60 in your Students’ Book.

Part 3 - Language Focus Two and Language Practice Open your Students’ Book on p. 63.
Our speech would be very dull if we didn’t use compound sentences. One of the most frequent ones is a sentence with a relative clause when we usually refer to a noun. After studying the examples in Language Focus Two/1 on p. 63, please do two tasks again. Self assessment question 8
Do Language Focus Two/2 on p. 63. We suggest that you should not only match the sentences but also write them down into your notebook. Check your answer in the Key at the end of this unit. Note that ’who’ refers to a person or people, ’that’ or ’which’ refer to things, and ’where’ refers to places. Let’s practise. Self assessment question 9

Part 4 - Business Communication Open your Students’ Book on p. 65.
Get your cassette/CD player ready. People are usually not confident enough on the phone till they have a routine. Here are some expressions for you to study (and learn of course) which help you to start a telephone conversation. The green bubble phrases are for speaking to a receptionist, the two blue ones are for when you are connected to the person you want to speak to. Now you can check your listening concentration in the next two tasks again. Self assessment question 13
