ABSTRACT ENGLISH PHRASAL VERB IN ELIZABETH GILBERT’S EAT PRAY LOVE TRANSLATED INTO MAKAN DOA CINTA: A NATURAL SEMANTIC METALANGUAGE APPROACH This thesis is aimed at analyzing phrasal verb using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach and translation methods. The data were taken from the novel entitled Eat Pray Love and its translation entitled Makan Doa Cinta, written by Elizabeth Gilbert. The data in this research include phrasal verb and its translation equivalent in Bahasa Indonesia. The data were analyzed descriptively using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory and 64 semantic primes proposed by Wierzbicka, and furthermore informally presented. The result of this research shows that method of translation used by the translator was the communicative translation. Based on the analysis using the NSM theory, 46 phrasal verbs were identified, 43 (93,5 %) were translated by applying communicative translation, 1 (2,2 %) were translated by applying literal translation, and two (4.3%) were omitted. Keywords: phrasal verb, method of translation, natural semantic metalanguage.
