36% more maize was produced (Preliminary production data of main crops, 2014) In 2014 the production of all major crops harvested in autumn was higher than in the previous year. 21% more cereals were produced than in the previous year, on nearly the same size of area. The production of wheat was 3.5% higher than in the previous year. The production of maize reached a record high, nearly 9.2 million tons were harvested, and its yields were 42% higher than in 2013. In 2014, 3.5% more wheat (5.2 million tons) was harvested from a 2.0% larger area (1.1 million hectares) than a year earlier, and its yields were 4,710 kilogrammes/hectare. 36% more (9.2 million tons of) maize was harvested from a 4.6% smaller area (1.2 million hectares) than in 2013. Its yields (7,740 kilogrammes/hectare) increased by 42%. The 15 thousand hectares of harvested area of sugar beet was nearly one fifth less, while its production (one million tons) 2.0% higher than in the year 2013, and its yields were up by 26% (to 66.4 tons/hectare). 1.56 million tons of sunflower, 4.8% more than in 2013, were harvested from a 1.2% smaller area (590 thousand hectares), and its yields (2,640 kilogrammes/hectare) were 6.0% higher than a year earlier. 28% more, 680 thousand tons of rape were produced on a 7.8% larger area (of 213 thousand hectares) than one year earlier, and its yields (3,190 kilogrammes/hectare) grew by 19% compared to 2013. The harvested area of potatoes (21 thousand hectares) was nearly the same as in 2013. A total of 547 thousand tons was harvested, 12% more than in the previous year. The harvested area of alfalfa (125 thousand hectares) was 3.8% smaller, while its production 4.0% higher than a year earlier, and a total of 594 thousand tons was produced. Its yields (4,770 kilogrammes/hectare) were 8.2% higher than in the previous year.
