It is situated approximately 100 kilometres from Prague in The Czech Central Mountains at the confluence of the Bílina and Labe (Elbe) Rivers. History of Ústí nad Labem started more than 20 000 years ago when in the valley of Bílina River lived people. First Written record about the city dates back to 11th. During the 12th and the 13th century the city started to be the centre in the region. The 19th century meant for the city the most important period of its development in its whole history. Basis for the development was an advantageous position as a trading centre. In 1841 a steam navigation was started down the river Labe. Ten years later the railway from Prague to Dresden through Ústí nad Labem was opened. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was the height of the river transport when the city became the biggest harbour in Austria-Hungary. Tragedies for this town were air raids at the end of the Second World War. These were the most horrible air raids in Czechoslovakia. Although the town was strongly affected by insensitive architecture of the second half of the 20th century, some sights were lucky to be renovated or reconstructed after years of waiting completely modern buildings were erected in the town, which were appraised mainly abroad. The banks of the River Labe were tied by the new Marian Bridge – the symbol of present. History of the University in Ústí nad Labem starts to be written already in 1954 – pedagogical College was founded in this year. Jan Evangelista Purkyně University was founded on 1991. It bears the name of a well known North bohemian native of Libochovice the scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně.
- The Ústí district The Ústí District is a cradle of the Czech statehood - the village of Stadice, from which the Bohemian Princess Libuše called Přemysl the Ploughman to the Bohemian throne, is situated in the valley of the Bílina River. The Ústí District lies in two protected landscape areas České středohoří (the Bohemian Midlands), the scenery of which is characterized predominantly by Buková Mountain with a TV transmitting tower, and the Krušné hory (Mountains). The most western part of the Labské pískovce also spread as far as this area. The historical sights of the Ústí District are varied - bedsides the Chateau of Krásné Březno, Trmice and Velké Březno, and Střekov Castle, another sight of this town is considered significant - the Church of the Assumption in the centre of Ústí nad Labem. This church can boast of the tower, which was deflected from its vertical axis by 1.92 metres when the town was bombed at the end of the Second World War. Many mountain tops and hills in the environment offer unexpectedly charming views of the Labe valley - e.g. the Erben Look-Out Tower. - How to reach the town (links from the nearest airport, train or coach stations) All international flights arrive in Prague Airport – Ruzyně. From the airport you can go by AE Bus (Airport Express) to Praha - Holešovice (Franz Kafka Railway Station which is also on Metro line C), from Praha - Holešovice by EC trains to Ústí nad Labem hlavní nádraží (the Main Railway Station). Travelling by car you have to buy motorway vignette which is obligatory for driving on Czech highways. Next to the dormitories is parking place for free. In Ústí nad Labem there are two different railway stations where the international trains stop. The first is Ústí nad Labem hlavní nádraží (Ú.n. L. the Main Railway Station) and the second is called Ústí nad Labem – Západ (Ú.n. L. – West). International buses usually go to Prague bus station Florenc (on Metro lines B and C). The buses, which go to Ústí nad Labem, depart from Florenc. Ústí nad Labem has only one bus station. The stations of urban transport are nearby bus station. Timetables can be found on the internet (in English): http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/autobusy/spojeni/ - Transport in the town (brief information on the main means of transport available) Ústí nad Labem (like every major city in the Czech Republic) has public transport system (MHD = Mass Urban Transport). You have to buy the ticket for MHD. After getting on the ticket must be date-stamped in order to make it valid. 2) Jan Evangelista Purkyně University The University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (UJEP) was established in Ústí nad Labem in compliance with Act No. 314 of the Czech National Assembly, issued on 9th July 1991.The formal inauguration ceremony was held on 28th September 1991. The university bears the name of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (17th December 1787 - 27th August 1869), the well-known North Bohemian and scientist. The university continues to develop his creative work and heritage in the spheres of science, education, and social and cultural life. 3) Why study Czech Czech is spoken by about 10,000,000 citizens of the Czech Republic in the Czech Lands and Moravia and several million other people of Czech origin in the U.S.A, Canada, Australia, Germany, Croatia, the Ukraine, etc. The Czech language has the longest tradition of all the modern Slavonic literary languages. The first Slavonic translation of the Bible was into the Czech language (done as early as in the mid-14th century), if the Old Slavonic translation is not taken into account. However, even this translation came into existence thanks to the Moravian prince Rostislav in the 9th century. Several words have been borrowed from Czech by other languages – for example robot, pistole, tábor. Czech is the mother tongue of Hus, Comenius, Hašek, Čapek, Kundera, Seifert and Havel. They formulated their thoughts in Czech and their works, translated into several other languages, were primarily written in Czech. The Czech Republic (f.e.):

The Czech Republic, which came into being after the division of Czechoslovakia on the 1 of January, 1993, is one of the youngest countries in Europe. It occupies, however, territory historically considered to be Czech, including Moravia, which has always been officially an integral part of the Czech lands (the Moravian Margraviate), as well as lower Silesia and which has been the home of western Slavonic ethnicities for thousands of years, who have gradually become the Czech nation as we know it today. st
Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic. It is spoken not only by its nearly 10 000 000 citizens, but also by members of Czech national minorities in the USA, Canada, Germany, Rumania, the Ukraine, etc. Czech is spoken here in the Czech Republic not only by Czechs, Moravians and Silesians, but also for communication with these three groups by Romanies, who otherwise speak the Romany language among themselves. Recently many foreigners have started to learn Czech because they have come here to live, at least temporarily.
Czech belongs to the Indoeuropean language family and to the western Slavonic language group, of which the Polish and Slovak languages are also members. Its alphabet consists of Latin letters supplemented by diacritical marks. It is primarily a language of the inflected type with a richly developed system of conjugation and declination. Its words change their form in accordance with their position within a sentence.
