Úvod - anotace Výukový materiál je primárně určen pro žáky 3. a 4. ročníků čtyřletých oborů zakončených maturitní zkouškou (39-41-L/01 Autotronik, 33-42-M/01 Nábytkářská a dřevařská výroba, 2345-M/01 Dopravní prostředky, 36-45-M/01 Technická zařízení budov, 39-41-L/002 Mechanik instalatérských a elektrotechnických zařízení budov) a 2. ročníků nástavbového studia (23-43-L/51 Provozní technika, 64-41-L/51 Podnikání).

Education in the USA
There is no uniform system of education for the U.S.A. as a whole, because the federal government exercises no control over administration or curriculum. Standard ans system of education varies from state to state. The majority of schools are publicly owned and financed by the state or local governments, although the federal government can also provide financial help. These schools are free of charge. Private schools are supported by churches, mainly by the Roman Catholic Church, or from various funds.
1.1
Types of American schools
The compulsory school age is different in individual states, but most states require school attendance from 6 to 16. The most distinctive feature of the American system of education is the emphasis laid on the education of the masses. Stages of education are: 1. Pre-school education - which includes nursery schools; for children from the age of 5 to 6. Most of them are private, although many public schools have free nursery schools too. 2. Elementary education (6 -_11), which comprises the first 5 grades of education taken at elementary schools. The pupils learn English, arithmetic, geography, the history of the U.S.A.,drawing,music,physical education, and manual work. 3. Secondary education (11 - 18), which is divided into a) middle schools (11 - 14), the 6th to the 8th grade, b) high schools (14 - 18), the 9th to the 12th grade. The American middle and high schools are comprehensive, coeducational secondary schools continuing and extending the work begun in the elementary schools. They offer a variety of courses. All students must take certain general courses and choose from specialized ones according to their demands, talents, and the vocation they are preparing for. Middle and high schools can offer from 30 to more than 100 different subjects, ranging from academic subjects, such as English, French, German, Spanish, Latin, Mathematics, Science, and Social studies, to the new subjects, such as typing, programming, business, economics, electrical work, music, and art. English, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education are compulsory. All high school students have final examinations in each subject. At the age of 16 they can either leave school or remain at school for another two years. In the 12th grade the students take a special test. The culmination of the past 13. school years is the graduation ceremony, at which the graduates get their high school diplomas. Some of them decide to continue their schooling, 2
while others decide to start working. Every school has a band and also baseball, basketball, and football teams. In the U.S.A. there are about 100,000 elementary and secondary schools. Three million students graduate from high schools each year and about one million of them go on to higher education. 4. Higher education (18 - 20), which comprises two-year colleges. These colleges were established to provide continuing general education and vocational and semiprofessional preparation for those young people who do not want or are unable to continue their studies at a university. The graduates are awarded the degree of Associate of Arts (A.A.). 5. University education (18 - ), which comprises universities and colleges, including professional and graduate schools. The oldest ones are Harvard, founded in 1636, which is situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts,, in the urban area of Boston, and Yale, founded in 1701, which is in New Haven, Connecticut, between Boston and New York. There is much in common between Harvard and Yale, and together they occupy a position in American university life like Oxford and Cambridge in England. A remarkable number of the men who hold prominent positions in public life and the big corporations were educated at one of these two. Harvard and Yale were followed by Princeton University, founded in 1746, in Princeton, New Jersey, Columbia University in New York.1
