1 London – culture, entertainment, transport 1.1 Parks London’s beautiful parks cover almost one third of the city and once were defined as the lungs of London. Hyde Park is the largest one, mainly famous for its Speaker’s Corner. Here, people, often standing on chairs or boxes, could make speeches on anything they wanted. St. James’s Park is one of the oldest green spaces in the city. In the 16th century, Henry VIII transformed this unhealthy and marshy area into a hunting domain. Today, the park has a lake, blafl swans, squirrels, colourful flowerbeds and borders Buckingham Palace. Regent´s Park contains London ZOO. The Royal Botanic Gardens, in Kew Gardens in Surrey, are world famous for their plant collections.
1.2 Theatres and concert halls There are about 100 theatres in the capital. These include the Royal National Theatre on the south bank of the Thales, and the London home of the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican Centre, an extensive arts centre and the venue for concerts, plays, art exhibitions and films. In 1989 some of the remains of the Globe Theatre, where William Shakespeare acted, were excavated on the south bank. The Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet, which rank among the world´s finest companies, perform at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The principal concert halls in central London are the Royal Festival Hall on the south bank, the Barbican Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall.
1.3 Museums and galleries
2
The British Museum houses major archeological and ethnografical collections including the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon of Athens, together with collections of prints and drawings, coins and medals. Important manuscripts and printed books, can be found in the British Library. The collection of western painting from the 13th to the 20th centuries in the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square is unrivalled and so is the national collection of British painting and sculpture in the Tate Gallery. Fossils and examples of Libiny plants and animals, minerals, gems, rocks and meteorites can be found in the Natural History Museum. The Science Museum shows exhibits outlining the history and development of science and industry- from veterán cars, trains and aeroplanes to the exploration of space and the development of computers. There are also many smaller museum in London which are worth seeing. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is at 221b Baker Street. In Madam Tussaud´s, wax portraits of famous world figures are on display.
1.4 Shopping London is a wonderful place to go shopping. London´s best-known shopping streets in the West End are Oxford Street (renowned for its fashionable clothes and shoe shops and large department stres such as Selfridges, Mark and Spancer, John Lewis), Regent Street, Bond Street, and Piccadilly, a busy street running from Piccadilly Circus to the Hyde Park Corner. Covent Garden, once a famous fruit and vegetable market, has been restored to make an elegant covered shopping area. The open-air fruit and vegetable market was moved to the south of the city to prezent the passage of huge delivery lorries blocking the streets of the centre, and to redukce pollution.
1.5 Transport London Underground, often called the Tube, is the fastest and easiest way to get around central London. Parts of the system are very old, the first line opened in 1863. Taxis are very popular in London and so are red double-decker buses. Green line buses operate within 25 miles of London. The main railway stations in central London for travelling outsider the city are Victoria, Paddington, Euston, Waterloo, King´s Cross/St Pancras, and Liverpool Street.
