Culture in Great Britain – Music, Film, Theatre
1.1
Music
Music in all its forms draws large audiences. Besides modern music artists and groups (everybody knows Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Madonna, Sting, Robbie Williams, Oasis and many others) very popular is also traditional or classical music. The music lovers can enjoy the variety of concerts of all kinds of music styles. In comparison to the Czech Republic, the classical music attracts much wider audience of all age groups. Orchestral concerts are promoted every year in many of the large towns of Britain. In London the principal concert halls are the Royal Festival Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, which are modern and have the best acoustics, and the old Royal Albert Hall, known for its promenade concerts. There are five London first-class orchestras and outside London there are the best-known symphony orchestras are in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Edinburgh, and Belfast. There are also amateur orchestras, choirs, and opera groups even in small country towns. Many schools have orchestras now too. Concerning modern pop and rock music The Beatles (selling more than 1 billion copies worldwide – the most succesful musicians in the world) and The Rolling Stones achieved international success. In recent years black musicians have also made a large contribution to the development of popular music. Some 650 professional festivals of music are held annually in many towns throughout Britain. The Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama is held annually in late August and early September. It lasts for three weeks and its rich programme consists of operas, orchestral and chamber music, recitals, poetry readings, plays, and art exhibitions. As for the festivals of modern music the most famous is the festival in Glastonbury. 1
TASK 1 – read the text and answer the questions below
Hear today, gone tomorrow – the music business Pop groups manufactured by the music industry have existed since the days of the Motown 'factory' in 1960s America, but few groups can have appeared (and disappeared) quite as rapidly as the UK's Hear'Say. In 2000, the UK's TV audience were ogripped by the first series 1

of Popstars, where 3,000 hopeful young singers competed for the opportunity to be part of a pop group that would guarantee them fame and fortune. Public interest in the five winners, Danny, Noel, Myleene, Kym and Suzanne, was so high that they were hidden at a secret location until they had recorded their first songs. When they came out of seclusion in February 2000, they had a new image and a new name. Their first single, Pure and Simple, sold over 1 million I copies and went straight to number 1 l in the charts - making it the bestselling debut single of all time. Their first album, Popstars, also went to number one and they had another four top-ten singles. Hear'Say were deliberately 'sold to the under-14s market. As well as the usual books, calendars and posters, 10,000 Hear'Say dolls were produced and a range of clothing was planned. In the summer of 2001, however, rumours started appearing in the newspapers of divisions within the group, and their second album, Everybody, only reached number 24. In January 2002, Kym left the group (having earned over Łl million in less than a year). Widely-publicised auditions were held to choose a replacement for her, but in October 2002 the group finally osplit, complaining that 'fans' were booing them at their concerts and shouting abuse at them in the streets. So what became of Hear' Say? Kym married a soap star and is still singing, and Myleene has launched a new career in classical music, but the other members of the group have faded into oblivion. There have even been rumours that they are working in ordinary low-paid jobs again. But despite the obvious fact that the record and TV companies made the most money from the Hear'Say experience, this didn't deter thousands more young people queuing up for places on the second series of Popstars, or its imitators Pop Idol and Fame Academy. It would appear that for many youngsters, a taste of fame is more important than artistic recognition or financial security. THE UK MUSIC INDUSTRY 10% of all world music sales are generated by the UK, whose huge pop music industry brings in £4.5 billion each year and accounts for 4% of all UK exports. These are the five richest pop stars currently living in Britain. 2

Film and Theatre
Film - The United Kingdom has had a significant film industry for over a century. The 'golden age' of British cinema was in the 1940s. Many British actors have achieved international fame and critical success, including Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Kate Winslet. Some of the most commercially successful films of all films have been produced in the United Kingdom, including the two highest-grossing film series (Harry Potter and James Bond). At present there are about 1,500 cinemas in Britain, including some 100 in London. Theatre - There are about 300 professional theatres in Britain about 100 of which are in London. Some are privately owned, but most are owned either municipally or by some organizations. The principal theatre companies are the National Theatre Company (plays in the National Theatre) and the Royal Shakespeare Company which performs in the Barbican Centre and in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon.
