Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? Final Version - Computer and Society IKI40000 Ari Widayanti, Christariny, Irene Talaway
The number of cellular phone grows fast as the cellular phones vendors produce new cellular phones almost every month. The new cellular phones has many modern and high-tech facilities, such as MMS, Camera, Java, etc. Many people in Jakarta already use such cellular phones. But there is a question whether this kind of cellular phones really needed or only for following trends. The objective of this paper is to show whether the cellular phones is really needed by people in Indonesia especially in Jakarta based on the leading survey. This paper also shows which facilities are really needed, and for what reasons the cellular phones owners use or do not use the high-tech facilities in their cellular phones. This paper can become a reference for people if they need considerations about which cellular phones they can use optimally.
1. Introduction 1.1. Background According to a survey held by GfK Asia Pte Ltd that was conducted in certain big cities in Indonesia (Jabotabek, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Denpasar), there is a significant increase of the number of cellular phones sales rate [Kompas]. Between the year 1999 and 2001 the sales rate growth average per month has achieve almost 100 percent. It shows the transformation of society to a going-mobile life style where mobile-tools is a need. There are several reasons that caused people prefer to use cellular phones more often than telephones. First, it supports nowadays life-style where people need to connect and be connected anywhere. Second, by using cellular phones someone can get a phone number and get connected easily without any birocracy or technical problem. They only need to buy the cellular phones and SIM-cards. Another reason is there are so many operators which provide services for cellular phone users that makes the business become more competitive. Last, it is caused by this technology provide various facilities. The high demand of cellular phones among communities is supported by cellular phones vendors, such as Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, and so on. They release new series of handsets with more variation of
1
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? facilities. Nowadays, cellular phones are not only functioned as communication tools, but they can be use as MP3 player, radio, and internet browser. Some cellular phones also equipped with digital camera that enable their user to take snapshot or video, to record or send it. With bluetooth technology, cellular phones users able to exchange information between their cellular phones, mobile PC (Personal Computer), PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), digital camera, and so on without using cable (wireless) by using radio waves. Facilities provided by latest series of cellular phones enhance the succeed of the technology development. But we cannot really tell that those facilities are really needed by the customers. They might buy the cellular phones to use the facilities or just to follow trends.
1.2. Objectives As stated before, we can see that there is a possibility that people buy cellular phones just for following trends. Therefore, by reading this essay readers know whether the facilities provided by cellular phones are really needed and well used by the owner, or the phones are bought just because following trends. In addition, this essay can be an alternative guidance for people who are going to buy cellular phones with limited budget. This essay can inform people what type of cellular phones they should buy regarding there may be some facilities not useful for them.
1.3. Methodology To meet the objectives of the essay, there are some steps that must be done. They are : 1. Literature Study Firstly, we search facts in the Internet, by reading news, surfing to cellular phones manufacturer’s site or advertisement about latest production of cellular phones. From the facts we collect what kind of facilities offered by that latest cellular phones and decide that we are going to explore only some of the facilities which are WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service), MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), digital camera, Java technology enabled, bluetooth, infra-red, MP3 player, and radio.
2. Questionnaire In order to get opinion from cellular phones owners about the facilities, we collect facts from 60 random people who owns cellular phones that provides at least one facilities described aforementioned not limited to age, sex, education and occupation. The facts consist of their identities (age, sex, occupation, education), cellular phones type and facilities provided in the cellular phones, cellular phones operator type, the frequency of changing their cellular phones in the past year, frequency of using the facilities and reason of use or not to use facilities. We have developed and spread questionnaires related to the issues by sheets or e-mail with questionnaire’s file attachment.
3. Result Analysis and Essay Writing In this stage, we collect the result of the questionnaire and decide what facilities used most and least, and what is the people’s common reason of use and not to use for each facility. Moreover, we can
2
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? find out what facilities that are generally unusable and usable. From there, we can conclude whether the facilities offered by cellular phones manufacturers nowadays is really needed.
2. Development of Cellular Phones Technology 2.1. The Development of Cellular Phones 2.1.1. Pre-cellular era Actually the mobile communication service has been started since 1946, when AT&T in St.Louis deployed transmitter radiated frequency modulated (FM) waves in a coverage area of up to 50 miles. As this technology be expanded, number of the user also become increase from 86,000 in 1948 to approximately 1.4 million by 1962 [Ritchie].
2.1.2. First Generation(1G) The cellular era was started when Bell Labs introduced a new analog cellular FM telecommunication system in 1971 [Ritchie], which called later with Advanced Mobile Phones Service (AMPS). This is the first generation of the cellular phone. They used FM for speech and FDMA (Frequency Division Multiplexing Access) as the access techniques. By using FDMA, each user used a fraction of the available frequency bandwidth to transmit and receive. The AMPS technology was introduced in Indonesia in 1991, indicated by the release of relative expensive, large and heavy cellular phones. AMPS has few disadvantages such as security (the high level of cellular phone number duplication), the need for large battery power, and the quality of the voice which is worse than the common telephone [Suryaputra01].
2.1.3. Second Generation(2G) As the demand grew, the cellular phone technology also becomes expanded. In America, TDMA (Timeslots Division multiplexing Access) which let the user use bandwidth at particular timeslots, and digital modules techniques were utilized as the new technology instead of analog. This technology could give better quality of voice. Beside TDMA, CDMA (Code Division Multiplexing Access) also has been introduced. This technology has been introduced not only in USA, but also in Hongkong, China, Philippines, Thailand, and has been widely used in Korea by 1997. In Europe, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) was developed in 1989. This technology used digitally encoded signals that prevents the user from eavesdropping. It also provides a better voice quality and the production cost of cellular phones also become lower [Ritchie]. Actually, CDMA has better performance than GSM. CDMA provides a better voice quality, able to transmit data in wider coverage area, provides high speed data services, and its transmitter can service more number of user rather than GSM. But in entering commercial phase, GSM had matured its system first in the middle of ’80s, several years before CDMA did the same thing. That’s why GSM was more stable than CDMA which matured its system later in
3
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? 1991. Beside of that, GSM had also already standardized its platform. Because of this reasons, GSM becomes more popular than CDMA, and widely used in the world, included Indonesia [Adhito]. In Indonesia this cellular phone technology was introduced first by Satelindo [Suryaputra01]. Cellular phones in this generation have facilities such as phone call, voice mail, short messaging services. The speed of data transfer was approximately 10 kbps [Surabaya-HiTechMall].
2.1.4. Second and half Generation (2.5G) In a world that always change from day to day, people demands also change and become complicated. People need to access data from another place while they were travelling or send not only text-based message (it could be voice, file, etc). For this purpose, better speed in data transfer becomes important. The GSM technology then become enhanced by increasing the speed of its data transfer. This faster technology was called GPRS (General Packet Radio Services). This technology provide 64-144 kbps in data transfer and support many facilities such as facsimiling, EMS (enhanced messaging service), web browsing, map/navigation, etc beside the facilities that have been supported by the 2nd generation cellular phones. It also takes only 6-9 minutes to download 3 minutes duration MP3 file [Surabaya-HiTechMall].
2.1.5. Third Generation (3G) The complicated works push people in the world to become more mobile. Many of them have a meeting or conference when they also have to be in another place at the same time. This needs have triggered demands for multimedia messaging services (MMS). Although GSM has been enhanced, but CDMA actually is more powerful technology in providing multimedia messaging service because it can provide high speed data transfer . To accommodate the demands, some company then introduce and adopt new technologies which called WCDMA (Wide-band CDMA) that backward compatible with the GSM, and CDMA2000 that backward compatible with CDMA and AMPS [Ritchie]. The cellular phones in this generation provides some facilities such as multimedia messaging services, video conference, TV/video streaming, high speed web browsing, global roaming, etc beside the facilities that have been supported by the last generation. The speed of data transfer can reach 2 Mbps, and it takes only 11 seconds to 1,5 minutes to download a 3 minutes duration MP3 file [Surabaya-HiTechMall].
2.2. Facilities that has been provided in cellular phones in Indonesia. Nowadays, the 3rd generation cellular phones have not reach Indonesia yet. Some of the cellular phone vendors have started developing cellular phones with many uncommon facilities, such as MMS (multimedia messaging service), bluetooth, camera digital, java technology, etc. The definition of some uncommon facilities (technology as well as services or protocols) listed here can be found in various websites. 1. Technology a. Bluetooth

b. Java / J2ME JavaTM is universal software platform developed by Sun Microsystems. J2METM (Java 2 Platform Micro Edition) is designed to run on small devices such as cellular phones and PDA’s [Mobile Phone Shops UK].
2. Services a. EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) Messaging service that allows simple graphics and tunes to be exchanged in addition to SMS text messages. The service requires that both phones (sender and receiver) are capable of EMS [Mobile Phone Shops UK].
b. MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) Messaging service that allows image, graphic and audio files to be sent with text messages to other MMS enabled cellular phones or via e-mail [Mobile Phone Shops UK].
c. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) Allows continuous connection to data networks at a high rate [Mobile Phone Shops UK].
3. Protocol a. Wireless Application Protocol Wireless application protocol (WAP) is an application environment and set of communication protocols for wireless devices designed to enable manufacturer-, vendor-, and technology-independent access to the Internet and advanced telephony services [IEC].
2.3. Operators that support the facilities Not every high-tech facilities can be used in Indonesia. Some operators in Indonesia have not supported the facilities utilization yet. 1. Indosat IM-3
5
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? This is the first operator which support the existing high-tech facilities. Indosat IM-3 support MMS, GPRS, and WAP [Indosat].
2. Telkomsel Recently, Telkomsel has already enhanced its operators technology, so this operator can support facilities such as MMS, GPRS(General Packet Radio Services) and WAP [Telkomsel].
3. Satelindo This operator only can support the utilization of WAP, GPRS and MMS.
4. Excelcomindo Unfortunately, this operator has not support MMS yet. But it support the utilization of WAP for internet browsing.

3.8. Reason for Not Using Facilities 3.8.1. WAP
Image 3a. Reason For Not Using WAP As we can see in Image 3a, most people whose cellular phones provide WAP do not use the facility because they do not need the facility. They also do not use WAP because it is not supported by their operator and using the facilities is expensive. That is why WAP hold the first place in the least frequently used facility.
11
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed?
3.8.2. EMS
Image 3b. Reason For Not Using EMS Like WAP, people whose cellular phones provide EMS do not use the facility because actually they do not need the facility. They also do not use EMS because it is not supported by operator (see Image 3b).
12
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed?
3.8.3. MMS
Image 3c. Reason For Not Using MMS Does not need the facility and not supported by operator become two main reasons why people whose cellular phones provide MMS do not use the facility (see Image 3c). Besides that, people also tend not to use MMS because there are still a low number of people who have cellular phones which support the service. Thus, they can not send MMS messages to others.
13
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed?
3.8.4. Digital Camera
Image 3d. Reason For Not Using Camera The main reason why people whose cellular phones provide Camera do not use the facility is because the camera use a lot of battery power (see Image 3d).
3.8.5. Java Technology
Image 3e. Reason For Not Using Java
14
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? Like WAP, most people whose cellular phones provide Java Technology actually do not need the facility. They also do not use the facility because the lack of information about how to use it (see Image 3e). These are the reasons why java hold the second place of the least used frequency, after WAP. Only 20% of people whose cellular phones provide Java Technology, use it more than 3 times a week (see Image 1 and Table 1).
3.8.6. Infrared
Image 3f. Reason For Not Using Infrared Like Java Technology, the main reasons why people whose cellular phones provide infrared do not use the facility are because actually they do not need the facility and do not know how to use it (see Image 3f).
15

3.8.7. MP3Player
Image 3g. Reason For Not Using MP3 Player The only reason why people who owns cellular phones which provide infrared do not use the facility is because the facility use a lot of battery power (see Image 3g).
3.8.8. Radio
16
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? Image 3h. Reason For Not Using Radio Use a lot of battery power, does not know how to use it, and does not need the facility become top three reason why people whose cellular phones provide radio do not use the facility (see Image 3h).
3.8.9. Bluetooth
Image 3i. Reason For Not Using Bluetooth The main reason why people whose cellular phones provide bluetooth do not use the facility is because they do not need the facility (see Image 3i)
4. Conclusion From the previous section, we have made several important facts : 1. WAP and Infrared is the facility which are owned by most of the respondent. Despite of that, in the reality, people does not use WAP and Infrared frequently. The reason they rarely use it is they feel that they do not need it. 2. Messaging service facilities such as: EMS and MMS which are become trends nowadays actually is not used frequently by the owner. It is caused by lack of support the telephone operator in Indonesia. Moreover, the owner also does not feel that they need to use them. 3. Java Technology and Infrared facility is also become the facility which is not used frequently by the owner because they feel that they do not need it and their lack of knowledge to operate it. 4. Bluetooth facility is not needed by cellular phone owner, according to the survey.
17
Trendy Phones: Are They Really Needed? 5. The nature of MP3Player to consume battery power fast become the main reason why cellular phone owner rarely use it. 6. Radio and Camera is used often by cellular phone owner for private needs. But both of them also consume battery power fast. Therefore, the most needed facilities among WAP, EMS, MMS, Digital Camera, Java Technology, Infrared, MP3 Player, Radio and Bluetooth are Radio and Camera. On the other hand, the remaining facilities are categorized as the least needed facilities. Based on the previous facts, we conclude that the trendy phones are not really needed by people in Jakarta nowadays. In our opinion, the conclusion can also be reflected to other cities in Indonesia, since Jakarta is the most modern city in our country. Thus, those facilities is not also needed by people in other cities besides Jakarta.
