At´už jde o jakýkoli projekt, klademe důraz na konzistentní a dynamický dialog.
Hlasy mezinárodní poroty mají 50 % v celkovém součtu a druhou polovinu představuje hlasování účastníků samotného veletrhu. Krásná moderátorka francouzsky a anglicky vyhlašovala vítěze v různých kategoriích.
*** Bogle Architects wins MIPIM Award 2016 The winning project in the category of Industrial and Logistics Real Estate at the MIPIM Awards 2016 was the ELI Beamlines project in Dolní Břežany near Prague. We spoke about the winning project with Viktorie Součková, Director of the Prague office of Bogle Architects: * Could you briefly introduce your studio? Bogle Architects is an international architectural studio founded in 2012 by Ian Bogle. We have been operating in Prague for eight years. I met Ian about 16 years ago at Norman Foster’s studio in London. We subsequently joined Hamiltons, a large London practice that was eventually reformed as Bogle Flanagan Lawrence Silver (BFLS). Bogle Architects was founded four years ago and I head up the Prague office which has 18 architects, while the London office has more than 20 people. We have a third studio in Hong Kong. Our team comprises of highly creative and experienced architects who share the same passion to design and build progressive, imaginative and innovative architecture. * How would you describe work by Bogle Architects? We endeavour to achieve elegant constructional solutions, however complex the design challenge. Our studio’s philosophy is based on clear thinking and broad perspectives, as well as close co-operation with the client and the whole team during the design process. We take pride in the fact that we are primarily designers though we also understand a project’s commercial point of view and are able to co-operate with clients successfully. Irrespective of the project, we place great emphasis on a consistent and dynamic dialogue. We ask, we draw, we model, we think and we ask again…until the brief and our proposal are aligned. In addition, we always try to bring a new perspective when approaching a new project. Our clients value the fact that we are not just architects who simply draw, but rather a team that brings forensic attention to every aspect of a scheme - everything is fully considered right through to the smallest detail, every element has a rationale, a function. We are also keenly aware that there is no point in designing something that is going to end up in a drawer and will never be realised. We like to build, so we must ensure that whatever we design is also feasible. That is certainly the case with ELI, which we designed at our studio down to the very last detail, literally down to the last screw! And as it was a public procurement, the
implementation documentation for the project had to be exceptionally detailed. * Are there only architects at the studio? We also have some engineers here and obviously we also cooperate with structural engineers and other necessary professions. Which is the difference between Prague and London. In England, the architect acts as team leader who heads up a group of consultants, but the client hires everybody separately. Here, the client chooses the architect – and he/she makes arrangements with all necessary specialists. * What projects do you specialise in? We don’t specialise in just one type of project. Our portfolio includes urban planning, administrative buildings, residential buildings, research and education facilities, and many others. We are, for instance, building schools in Singapore and Vietnam. Now we are designing a private school in Slovakia. We have several administrative buildings throughout Prague and several projects in Bratislava in progress. We also have a luxurious residential project with up to 50 apartments in Prague 6, which will commence on site this year. * What was the start like for ELI? We acquired the project by winning an international architectural tender announced by the Institute of Physics at the Czech Academy of Science Czech Republic in 2009. It was a public procurement, announced on an EU website advertising tenders. It was a simple assignment: a project for a laser centre. The condition was to execute everything in Czech. There were estimated costs for both project and time when the building was to be completed. The tender had two rounds. In the first round, each architect had to demonstrate his/her experience, so we sent a brochure including projects of similar value and scale that we had completed. There were about 12 studios from the Czech Republic who proceeded to the second round as one of the conditions was that the studio must have an office in the Czech Republic. Eventually, we won the tender in September 2009. This was followed by yet another condition: We had to submit documentation for a planning permit within six weeks. As the building is not situated in Prague, significantly fewer statements were required from the relevant authorities. There were about 10 people working intensively on the project in our studio, attending in detail to the documentation. While developing our ideas, we reached out to specialists from Physics Institutes in England, France, Belgium and Germany. This was followed by another four or five years collaborating with planning engineers from component professions, for instance, PBA, Němec and Polák, AED, and during the construction also with the contractor, an association of companies Metrostav, VCES and OHL ŽS (MVO). There are very few similar projects in existence anywhere in the world, and there was no manual saying what the laser centre should look like. * What did the assignment include? Given our previous experience, the design of the offices as well as the lecture theatre and adjacent premises was relatively straightforward but the heart of the scheme – the vast structure containing the actual lasers, was something of a challenge. We knew that it would be a massive concrete box comparable in size to a football pitch and positioned at a depth of
approximately 8 m underground and 12 m above ground. The concrete walls were required to be up to 1.6 m in thickness. The requirements regarding the building’s actual function was being developed in parallel, with the scientists developing their ideas regarding the specifics of the new facility. This meant they had certain parameters at the beginning and were coming up with technical details and connections as it progressed. Put simply, the building will contain extremely powerful lasers emitting beamlines of approximately 1.5km in length, travelling at enormous speed. * Such an exceptional building certainly required special parameters… The basic assignment stated that the building must be entirely rigid and stable, given that the instruments inside are exceptionally sensitive to the merest movement. That is why the heavy monolithic structure is anchored to the bedrock. Another important requirement was for all laser equipment to be installed in a super-clean environment, as far as possible free of all dust particles. This is a cutting-edge laboratory environment, where the temperature must be kept within an exact range with a deviation of plus/minus 0.5 °C and all the workers must operate wearing special clothing. * When is the laser centre to be put into operation? There is a very thoroughly elaborated 3D digital model of the laser. In Czech Republic, Germany, the USA and others, there are already parts of the apparatus being produced. All will be assembled on site. The estimate is that the institute should operate fully within three years. Final building approval progressed successfully, after 2.5 years of construction, at the end of last year. The administrative part of the building is already in operation. * You received an award in the category of Industrial and Logistics Real Estate in Cannes, France. How did that occur? As we attend the prestigious MIPIM international real estate conference every year, we were aware of the AWARDS competition. When we completed the work in Dolní Břežany, we agreed that it certainly made sense to enter the project. Some 2,500 projects were submitted this year, across all categories! ELI was one of four projects short-listed in the Industrial and Logistics Category. We were mostly competing against logistics centres. * How did the voting proceed? Votes by the international jury total 50%. The other half is from the participants of MIPIM. Everybody advised us to engage actively with the PR campaign and promote the project. As for the panels, we were at the very beginning of the hall where the competing projects were displayed in alphabetical order. Our panel stood out nicely against the others, which might have influenced a whole number of voters. * What do you think was the reason for choosing ELI as the winner? Mainly the ingenuity of the project and its successful architectural concept, which makes good sense and offers a clear vision. We knew the budget constraints and designed the project accordingly. A light white canopy unifies the individual functional parts of the complex
of buildings – offices, lecture theatre, library and laser building. It is clearly legible as an ensemble for all visitors to ELI: here are the offices, here the educational and meeting premises and there is the laser building with its visitors’ gallery, where one can see everything that happens in the laser laboratories. Overall, the project gives the impression of a ‘campus’ merging all functions that the ELI Beamlines centre requires for its operation. * How was the evening party at the film palace in Cannes? The ceremony was held at the large hall, and felt rather like the Oscars! The nominated project teams had designated seats. A very elegant presenter announced the winners from various categories in French and English. And when our category came up and the presenter announced the ELI project as the winner, we just shrieked with excitement, leapt to our feet and dashed up onto the stage to receive our prize. All those nominated had been asked to prepare a 30-second video to introduce the project. After that was screened, I made a short speech expressing our happiness and thanks to all who had participated in the project. Winning this award was an extraordinary experience and standing on stage to receive the prize was a great personal honour for me, our company and for everyone who co-operated on the project. * What does this prestigious award mean for the Bogle Architects studio? It is great PR… Are you prepared for new contracts? It confirms our motto: Quality and again quality. Everything that leaves our office must be top quality – thoroughly checked and verified. And we are open to all work contracts. We would like to have as broad a portfolio as possible. We hope that the award will also help us to become better recognised. We often enter open competitions and frequently find ourselves in second place. You inevitably have a ‘post-mortem’ asking yourself how or what we should improve. And the organisers tell us: ‘You are doing great. We haven’t seen a presentation like that before. Everything was thought through to the smallest detail but you are not as famous as Frank Gehry or Norman Foster.’ Well now, following this award, let’s hope things are going to change! The sky’s the limit?
