(Crystal Jade)

Extract - Importance of Being Earnest ACT 1 Jack. Well, produce my cigarette case first. Algernon. Here it is. [Hands cigarette case.] Now produce your explanation, and pray make it improbable. [Sits on sofa.] Jack. My dear fellow, there is nothing improbable about my explanation at all. In fact it’s perfectly ordinary. Old Mr. Thomas Cardew, who adopted me when I was a little boy, made me in his will guardian to his grand-daughter, Miss Cecily Cardew. Cecily, who addresses me as her uncle from motives of respect that you could not possibly appreciate, lives at my place in the country under the charge of her admirable governess, Miss Prism. Algernon. Where is that place in the country, by the way? Jack. That is nothing to you, dear boy. You are not going to be invited . . . I may tell you candidly that the place is not in Shropshire. Algernon. I suspected that, my dear fellow! I have Bunburyed all over Shropshire on two separate occasions. Now, go on. Why are you Ernest in town and Jack in the country? Jack. My dear Algy, I don’t know whether you will be able to understand my real motives. You are hardly serious enough. When one is placed in the position of guardian, one has to adopt a very high moral tone on all subjects. It’s one’s duty to do so. And as a high moral tone can hardly be said to conduce very much to either one’s health or one’s happiness, in order to get up to town I have always pretended to have a younger brother of the name of Ernest, who lives in the Albany, and gets into the most dreadful scrapes. That, my dear Algy, is the whole truth pure and simple. Algernon. The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility! Jack. That wouldn’t be at all a bad thing. Algernon. Literary criticism is not your forte, my dear fellow. Don’t try it. You should leave that to people who haven’t been at a University. They do it so well in the daily papers. What you really are is a Bunburyist. I was quite right in saying you were a Bunburyist. You are one of the most advanced Bunburyists I know. Jack. What on earth do you mean? Algernon. You have invented a very useful younger brother called Ernest, in order that you may be able to come up to town as often as you like. I have invented an invaluable permanent invalid called Bunbury, in order that I may be able to go down into the country whenever I choose. Bunbury is perfectly invaluable. If it wasn’t for Bunbury’s extraordinary bad health, for instance, I wouldn’t be able to dine with you at Willis’s tonight, for I have been really engaged to Aunt Augusta for more than a week.
Jack. I haven’t asked you to dine with me anywhere to-night. Algernon. I know. You are absurdly careless about sending out invitations. It is very foolish of you. Nothing annoys people so much as not receiving invitations. Jack. You had much better dine with your Aunt Augusta. Algernon. I haven’t the smallest intention of doing anything of the kind. To begin with, I dined there on Monday, and once a week is quite enough to dine with one’s own relations. In the second place, whenever I do dine there I am always treated as a member of the family, and sent down with either no woman at all, or two. In the third place, I know perfectly well whom she will place me next to, to-night. She will place me next Mary Farquhar, who always flirts with her own husband across the dinner-table. That is not very pleasant. Indeed, it is not even decent . . . and that sort of thing is enormously on the increase. The amount of women in London who flirt with their own husbands is perfectly scandalous. It looks so bad. It is simply washing one’s clean linen in public. Besides, now that I know you to be a confirmed Bunburyist I naturally want to talk to you about Bunburying. I want to tell you the rules. Jack. I’m not a Bunburyist at all. If Gwendolen accepts me, I am going to kill my brother, indeed I think I’ll kill him in any case. Cecily is a little too much interested in him. It is rather a bore. So I am going to get rid of Ernest. And I strongly advise you to do the same with Mr. . . . with your invalid friend who has the absurd name. Algernon. Nothing will induce me to part with Bunbury, and if you ever get married, which seems to me extremely problematic, you will be very glad to know Bunbury. A man who marries without knowing Bunbury has a very tedious time of it. Jack. That is nonsense. If I marry a charming girl like Gwendolen, and she is the only girl I ever saw in my life that I would marry, I certainly won’t want to know Bunbury. Algernon. Then your wife will. You don’t seem to realise, that in married life three is company and two is none. Jack. [Sententiously.] That, my dear young friend, is the theory that the corrupt French Drama has been propounding for the last fifty years. Algernon. Yes; and that the happy English home has proved in half the time.
Explain how Wilde brings to life the two different characters in this passage and what does the passage reveal about their relationship with each other? This extract is taken from the play “The Importance Of Being Earnest” which is a play by Oscar Wilde about two men in the city and country during the Victorian times who creates an alternate ego to get what they want and are having troubles in marrying the people they want to marry.
In this extract, we see Jack and Algy in Algernon’s house arguing and discussing certain things such as marriage and Bunburying. Through their conversation, Wilde has successfully created the effect of humor, discusses the different viewpoints on marriage, brought both Jack and Algernon to life, and show the readers what an amusing relationship they have. Oscar Wilde purposely creates two extremely opposite characters and make them friends in order to bring the characters to life and make their relationship amusing and humorous. The fact that the two characters are extremely different are made obvious to the readers through this passage, where Jack and Algy are sharing their different viewpoints on marriage and in the process reveals what they are like. With the help of epigrams, paradoxes, and repetitions, Wilde have successfully shown the audience the amusing, hilarious, and slightly close relationship between Jack and Algernon. Jack’s character is pictured to be someone who seems serious, responsible, and very proper. Everyone seems to see Jack as someone who is extremely serious and responsible, and that is the image he put on for himself. This is shown when Jack explains to Algernon his reason in being ‘Ernest’. He says, ‘When one is placed in the position of guardian, one has to adopt a very high moral tone on all subjects. It’s one’s duty to do so. And as a high moral tone can hardly be said to conduce very much to either one’s health or one’s happiness, in order to get up to town I have always pretended to have a younger brother of the name of Ernest, who lives in Albany, and gets into the most dreadful scrapes.’ The fact that Jack is doing things he can to be a good guardian shows that Jack is a responsible person. Jack’s seriousness is revealed through his proper and never strange responses. When reading the passage, it is clear that unlike Algernon, Jack seems to always respond very properly and seriously. This shows that his character is serious. Hence, Wilde uses this conversation to show the audience what kind of person Jack is and also bring him to life. In contrast to Jack, Wilde has created Algernon to be a realist who is never serious, ignorant, pushy, and loves excitement. Wilde shows the readers this through the use of paradoxes, epigrams, and irony in the conversation. Algernon, unlike Jack, is shown to be someone who is never serious and loves excitement. This is shown when he says ‘pray make it improbable’ when asking for Jack’s explanation which shows that he loves things that are interesting and exciting. His use of epigrams and paradoxes also shows that although he is sometimes strange and never serious, he is quiet witty and is a realist. An example of this is when he says, ‘The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility!’ As an addition to that, Algernon’s realistic yet unpleasant views on marriage shows that he is a realist. An example of this is when he says, ‘You don’t seem to realize, that in married life three is company and two is none.’ Algernon is also shown to be someone who is pushy and ignorant. This is shown when he said, ‘You are absurdly careless about sending out invitations. It is very foolish of you. Nothing annoys people so much as not receiving invitations.’ This shows him as being pushy and ignorant as he is inviting himself to dine with Jack because Jack didn’t actually invite him. Last but not lest, Algernon is shown to be someone who is never serious. This is shown not just by his often strange responses but also by what Jack thinks of him. Jack said to him, ‘You are hardly serious enough’ which shows that Algernon is not a serious person. This extract reveals to us that the relationship between Algernon and Jack is humorous, amusing and that they are good friends. The fact that they are good friends are shown through the use of repetition, what they say, and are quiet obvious because of the setting. The conversation from this extract happens in Algernon’s house which shows that they are friends. This is because if Jack and Algernon weren’t friends, Jack wouldn’t be in Algernon’s house. Another thing that shows that they are friends is the repetition of ‘my dear’. Jack and Algernon often start the things
they say by acknowledging or calling each other as ‘my dear’, which shows affection and that they are friends. Last, Jack and Algernon are shown to be honest to each other and they are comfortable in doing that. For example, when Jack tells Algy, ‘You are not going to be invited’ or when he says, ‘….motives of respect that you could not possibly apprieciate.’ This shows that Jack is comfortable in being completely honest with Algy. This usually only happens between people who are close, which reveals that Jack and Algy might be good friends. However, the relationship between Jack and Algy are not exactly very close. This is because Jack still cannot trust Algy. This is shown when he told Algy that he won’t be invited to visit him in the country. Jack does this because he does not trust Algy to behave properly. Last but not least, Wilde have made the relationship between them to be extremely amusing and hilarious. Their relationship is extremely amusing and hilarious because Jack and Algy are completely different from each other. Hence, their opinions about thing they talk about such as marriage, Bunburying, and relations, and how they respond to things are absolutely different. The fact that they are nothing alike and can still be good friends is amusing and humorous. In conclusion, Wilde has effectively used this extract to bring Jack and Algernon to life and to make their relationship amusing. Using this extract also, Wilde has successfully introduced the two main characters of the play and what they are like to the audience. I also learned that the characteristics and constrasting personalities between these two main characters, Jack and Algernon, is a huge part of the reason why this extract is humorous and what makes their relationship amusing. Their relationship as friends will also be shown later when To make their relationship more realistic, Wilde have made Jack tolerant (in this extract) and Algernon ignorant so they can accept each other’s differences. Wilde have done a great job in this extract in showing the audience the two character’s amusing and humorous relationship, and also bringing the two characters to life.

Yang terhormat, Executive Principal, Pak Ng Eng Chin, Yang terhormat, Vice Principal, Pak Mike Carroll, Yang terhormat, Kepola Sekolah, Bu Capri Anjaya, Yang tercinta, teman-teman seperjuangan. Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
Wassalamualaikum
