Nyikorgó kosárral ölében, ment a padlásra, ment serényen. Én még őszinte ember voltam, ordítottam, toporzékoltam. Hagyja a dagadt ruhát másra. Engem vigyen föl a padlásra.

Május azonban más izgalmas programot is tartogat számunkra. Amennyiben többet szeretne tudni személyiségükről és költészetükről, feltétlenül várjuk legközelebbi irodalmi estünkön, május 11-én du. 4 órakor a Mercer Island Presbiteriánus Templomban Dr. Hegyváry Csaba előadására. Tavasz illatú, verőfényes napsütést kívánok! - Krupanics Zsuzsa
MAY 2013
Board’s Column I do not know the reason, but it seems Mother Nature is playing a game with us. One minute we have bright sunshine and blossoming trees, and in the next minute out of nowhere comes oversized hail. For sure we will have to wait some more for spring. Despite the unfortunate weather, when I think of May I see flowers in tiny hands, and I see rosycheeked, bright-eyed children as they celebrate their Mom. We are sending much love to all the dear mothers and grandmothers on the best day of May, MOTHER’S DAY! Do not miss seeing Kisbetyarok in their two upcoming performances on Sunday, May 19 at 2 pm and again on Saturday, May 25 from 3 to 4 pm. The May 19 performance is at Covenant Shores Retirement Center on Mercer Island, and the performance on the 25th is at the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center. During the past year, we held many interesting events, commemorations, book presentations, literature discussions and dance nights. We are not even able to list them all. One thing is certain, we can consider ourselves fortunate that despite increased lease terms and prices we are able to preserve the places in which we can operate the school, have a place for the seniors to get together, and enjoy a night out partying as well. It is therefore in our best interests that all of us take good care of the facilities we rent for the events. Unfortunately, we have repeatedly received negative feedback that many cigarette butts were found around the building entrance, and next time we will have to pay a hefty penalty. Please pay attention in the future, to avoid the possibility of losing the opportunity of renting the building. Ever heard of the poets Attila József and Gyula Juhász? If you want to know more about their personalities, their characters and their work, be sure to join our literary night with Dr. Csaba Hegyváry on May 11 at 4 pm at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. I wish you all a sunny spring! - Zsuzsa Krupanics

Közel két éve vesz részt a vezetőség munkájában, nagy örömmel készül minden kulturális eseményre.

Vezetőségi jelöltek/Nominees for 2013-2014 Az alábbiakban ismertetjük a 2013-2014-es év vezetőség jelöltjeit. Below are the nominees for the 2013-2014 Board positions. Tagsági felelős: Gulyás Erika
Membership Chairperson: Erika Gulyás
Rendezvény felelős: Gulyás Zsuzsi
Social Chair: Susan Gulyás
Oktatási felelős: Gyulai Katalin
Education Chair: Katalin Gyulai
Mivel szülei a jobb élet reményében költöztek Amerikába, Zsuzsi hivatásának tartja a magyar emberek megsegítését. Szüleivel együtt rendszeresen utazik Magyarországra, hogy közösségfejlesztő projektekkel a magyarországi romák életkörülményeinek javítását és szociális integrációját elősegítsék. Másokat is betanít hasonló projektek végzésére világszerte. Kati öt éve tagja a WMASz vezetőségének. Szeret e csapat tagja lenni.
Erika moved from Martfű to Bellevue in 1992 through her marriage. She studied accounting at the Bellevue Community College, and worked as an accountant simultaneously until their first child, Enikő was born. They had two more children. The kids take up most of Erika’s free time. It is important to her to keep the Hungarian language and culture. They have been going to the Hungarian School for 13 years, where she regularly helps and provides goodies to the members (especially to the parents). She joined the board two years ago mainly helping the social chairpersons’ work, but she likes to take part in anything. Susan is a first-generation Hungarian-American because her mom and dad moved here in 1972 to pursue the American dream. She was raised speaking Hungarian in the home and is proud of her Hungarian heritage. The only one in her family to graduate from college, she’s now an engineer at Boeing. She believes her parents’ dream to leave their home for a better life came full-circle when she realized her ability to serve and help the Hungarian people. Susan and her mom and dad travel to Hungary regularly to carry out community development projects that aim to improve living conditions and social integration within Roma communities there, and she actively coaches others in leading service projects around the world. Rounding off her fifth year on the board of HAAW, Kati enjoys working with this team. She contributed to the revival of the scholarship program, the foundation of the Hungarian library, and the organization of several auctions. A Program Manager for a marketing agency, she currently works on Microsoft projects. Kati got to know her husband, Laci Orbán at the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. She is a proud member of Kisbetyárok together with her daughters, Panni and Lili.

MAY 2013
Írta/By: Csaba Orbán
School Corner
“The lark's aloft from bough to bough, the song is passed from lip to lip.” I heard this Hungarian verse from a teenager as I arrived in the Hungarian School last time I was there. Before school there is always quite a buzz in the hall. Younger children are running, playing air-hockey or sliding on the indoor slide, while parents are chatting a bit and watching their offspring. The start of the routine is usually some team game or play. We all know that the “play time” is at least as interesting for kids and adults as the rest of the school day. At play we learn a lot about each other. For example, we learn who is fast or tricky, but we also see who learns rhymes easily. Most of the kids learn the songs and verses more easily if they learn while playing. This time around the weather is splendid. After a long rainy and gray Seattle winter, it feels good to drive to the Hungarian school in sunshine. Perhaps you can imagine the morning scene when we all load into the car. On the way to school we sing our favorite songs and drive across the Lacy W. Murrow Memorial Bridge over Lake Washington. Now the weather is good and the mood is great. The Director of the Portland Hungarian School, “Bobita,” came to visit us, and the visit resulted in a very constructive exchange of ideas. About the Hungarian School you can say a lot, but most of all you see right away that it is friendly, dynamic, versatile, educational and fun: this is how our visitor summarized our school during one of our numerous talks. Progress is reflected in happy pupil faces, and it resonates in their laughter. Success, on the other hand, is when the kids own, use and build on to their two (or in some cases even more) cultural heritages. After “play time” there are the formal classes. All four age groups have a unique and age-appropriate program. There are people who might think that the Hungarian School is “just” a language school for kids, but we can happily say that it is much more. Of course the kids will practice and learn the Hungarian language, but they will learn among other things to write and read in Hungarian, to sing, to tell stories and to behave properly. They will learn versification, traditions, and understanding of the world and of contemporary Hungarian culture. After classes a healthy snack is served that is brought by volunteer parents on a rotating basis. After snack the kids gather again. On this day we acted out a song-tale for our own enjoyment. Once the play was over, the parents cleaned up and re-established the room arrangements. A few of us stayed for a while to finish conversations. Everyone headed home or to their next destination in the greater Seattle Metropolitan area in the direction of the four winds, just to start planning on the next occasion of meeting for Hungarian School in two weeks again.

Dear Friends, You are probably aware of the fact that a couple of amendments were passed by the Hungarian Parliament. On April 23rd, 2013 I received the following new rules and regulations. For verification of citizenship the following are requested: Citizenship verification application Registration of birth, marriage(s) and divorce(s) Registration for the address database as a Hungarian citizen living abroad or a Hungarian citizen living in Hungary. ALL FORMS ARE NEW For a passport application first the applicant must have the verification of citizenship, the birth certificate, the marriage certificate(s), divorce decree(s) registered in Hungary. The USA birth and marriage certificates no longer have to be translated into Hungarian, but the divorce decrees or other documents do. It is compulsory now to complete the forms for the address database of Hungary and for the choice of living abroad permanently, or temporarily. For most of us the first choice is the answer. Good news that (ONLY) in the framework of verification of citizenship the costs were reduced as shown below: Verification of citizenship, if citizenship certificate is not requested: 0 USD In case of US certificates translation is not necessary, 0 USD Certification of translation other documents: 0 USD Making copies of original documents (notarization of copy): 0 USD However for the registration of birth, marriage and divorce 60 USD/each shall be paid to Los Angeles as a consular fee Registration in person- and address database: 0 USD
Kérem, ne használják a régi űrlapokat! Az újak tőlem elektronikusan megkaphatók!
Please, do not use the old forms! I can send the new forms electronically!

Tallózó Műemlékvédelem A kulturális örökség megőrzéséért járó európai uniós kitüntetést, az Europa Nostra-díjat ítélték oda az alsóbogáti FesteticsInkey-kastélynak. A Somogy megyei műemlék épület a kulturális örökség megőrzése kategóriában nyert díjat.

Összeállította: Ferenczy Péter kilencedik 2006-ban, amelynek angol fordítását nemzetközi díjra is jelölték. Film Folytatódik Jankovics Marcell filmjének, Az ember tragédiája című alkotásnak a fesztiválkörútja: a sikeres londoni premier után áprilisban Minneapolis és Rouen, májusban pedig Lima közönsége láthatja a Madách Imre műve alapján készült animációs filmet. Jankovics Marcell forgatókönyvét 1983-ban írta, a gyártás 1988-ban kezdődött. Sisyphus című 1974-es animációs rövidfilmjét Oscar-díjra jelölték, 1977-ben a háromperces Küzdők című alkotásával pedig Arany Pálma-díjat nyert a cannes-i filmfesztiválon.

Hungarian Press Review Monument preservation The Festetics-Inkey castle in Alsóbogáti won the Europa Nostra award given by the European Union. This monument located in Somogy county won in the category for preservation of cultural heritage. The castle was built in 1759 for “Bences” monks, and was passed on to the Festetics family around 1830. The Festetics family started a grand scale extension and renovation providing the castle with the classicist design visible today. The nine acre castle park houses specimens of almost all trees native in Hungary. History The tree from Doberdo is the symbol of soldiers perished in the First World War. The three was transported by carriage between Italy and the city of Szeged in 1916; now it was temporarily returned to the Doberdo plateau, where it is exhibited as part of large scale commemoration programs in the city of San Martino del Carso. According to the story of the tree, the 46th infantry unit from Szeged fought heroically on the Italian front during WW I. They were the only unit in the Monarchy that participated in all twelve battles. The remnants of the mulberry tree that stood on the church hill of Martino del Carso, and survived the extensive war damage that devastated the area, are kept to this day in the “Fekete”-house in Szeged. Music The BBC Music Magazine’s top 20 list of not to be missed classical musical events listed the concert of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Ivan Fischer at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham on the second place. The program included the Concerto of Bartok and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. In related news, the Esquire magazine enlisted the best classical orchestras in the world. First place went to the Philharmonics in Berlin, second to the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and third was the Budapest Festival Orchestra, besting the fourth placed Chicago Symphonics and fifth placed Staatskapelle from Dresden. Film Marcell Jankovics’s movie, “The Tragedy of Man”, an animated film based on Imre Madách’s work is continuing its tour: after the successful London premiere, it will be shown in Minneapolis and Rouen in April, and in Lima in Maj. Jankovics wrote the script in 1983 and the production started in 1988. After a series of setbacks, the film was completed at the end of 2011. The director used a different style for all 15 segments. Jankovics, who is a winner of the Kossuth and Béla Balázs awards, is also the author of whole length animation films such as János Vitéz (1973), Fehérlófia (1982) and Ének a csodaszarvasról (Song about the Wonder Stag) (2002), and participated in the creation of the series Gusztáv and Hungarian Folk Tales. His animated short film, Sisyphus (1974), was nominated for Oscar, and the three minutes long “Küzdők” (Strugglers) won the Golden Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977.

Translated by Zsóka Jakab Literature This is the eight year of the Aegon Atistical Award that is given every spring to the best contemporary literary work published during last year. This year’s honor and the associated 3 million Forints went to Ferenc Barna’s novel “Másik halál” (Another Death). The novel was published in 2012 by the Kalligram Publishing House, and is the story of a man in his fifties, who, after a lot of trials, is working as a museum guard. It is about friendship, things falling apart, cities and travels, both in the inside and outside world. “It is a book about us, our last 20 years, our current affairs, and I hope that it will assist in better processing of this system that we call life” declared the Sándor Márai and Tibor Déry awards winner author, who, in his everyday life is a guard at the Ernst Museum. So far he has published four books, among them the “A kilencedik” (The Ninth) in 2006. The English translation of this latter one has been nominated for an international award. Applied arts/Design The main honor of the Blickfang design competition in Stuttgart went to the Hungarian “moving textile”, a special material developed by Zsuzsanna Szentirmai-Joly. She won in a field of almost 200 competitors. The shape of this new material can be changed as desired. Artist Géza Csire created the standing lamp “Laokoon” out of the moving material – an object that is esthetically pleasing and its shape can be changed at will. The Blickfang competition recognizes the work of those who “pair independent creativity with passion and perfection”. Healthcare According to the regulation published in the latest edition of “Magyar Közlöny”, if a municipality can’t fulfill its role in public health services, then the government is obligated to step in and take care of it. According to the law, this government obligation is considered temporary for three months, then it becomes permanent in the fourth one. “It is very important for the population and patients that medical offices providing outpatient care are functional”, declared the undersecretary’s office. According to earlier health care laws, medical offices, together with hospitals, would have become government properties and responsibilities. However, municipalities had a choice whether they would keep the outpatient offices under their jurisdiction. Society By the end of 2013, the number of openings in nurseries will increase with 2000. This means that, including the expansions of the past two years, 3500 more newborn to two years old will be able to be placed in these government run institutions. Today 284 thousand kids under the age of two live in Hungary, which means that 13% of them can be cared for under the current circumstances. More than 90% of the nurseries are run by municipalities.

Az ösztöndíjpályázat The Winner of the nyertese Ringbloom Mónika Scholarship Contest Szívből gratulálunk Ringbloom Mónikának, ösztöndíjpályázatunk idei nyertesének.
Congratulations to Monika Ringbloom , the winner of this year’s scholarship competition. Monika is planning to improve her Hungarian language skills with conversations, interpretation, and song words at Ti Ti Tabor. Thanks to Christine Boldizsár, Judit Kalló, Éva Forgács, and Rush Velcsov for their work on the scholarship committee and to Andrea Clough for leading the committee’s work.
Please read some great excerpt from Monika’s scholarship essay here: “Attending Ti Ti Tábor every summer has helped me maintain fluency despite being so far away from the Hungarian community for the majority of the year. … Being immersed in the Hungarian language for an entire week helps me get the language back, so to speak. I remember old phrases that I have forgotten and eagerly practice new ones. … Attending Ti Ti Tábor has also given me the opportunity to work on my translating skills. Because the teachers only speak Hungarian, the classes are translated into English so that everyone can understand what they are saying. Over the past few years I have helped translate for the children’s classes and even a few of the women’s dance classes. … Being bilingual is such a blessing and can be an invaluable tool that I merely need to know how to use. Who knows, speaking Hungarian may even help me in a future job someday! I have been so fortunate to have grown up in a family that has maintained ties with the Hungarian community. It has instilled in me a desire to preserve and pass down Hungary’s beautiful culture to future generations. Participating in Ti Ti Tábor these past several years has allowed me to do just that!”

Hungarian film at SIFF: JUST THE WIND * (directed by Bence Filegauf) The murder of a Romany family in a Hungarian village confirms the family’s Romany neighbors' worst fears. Now they live in fear that they too will be the target of terror. The camera stays hot on the heels of the protagonists, making the breathless escalation of events physically palpable *Show times will be posted on HAAW’s website and Facebook page after May 2nd.
