1) READ THIS TEXT “The Little Wizard Stories of Oz” by Lyman Frank Baum: pages of the book: 4 - 6 The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger In the beautiful palace of the Emerald City, which is in the fairy Land of Oz, there is a great Throne Room. This room is where Princess Ozma, the Ruler, sits for an hour each day on her throne and listens to her people tell her their problems. The most important people of Oz gather around her throne, including the Scarecrow, Woodman, the Wizard of Oz, the Shaggy Man and other famous fairy people. Little Dorothy usually sits on the ground near Ozma´s feet. On either side of the throne there are two large beasts are called Hungry Tiger and the Cowardly Lion. These two beasts are Ozma´s guards, but she has never needed their protection because everyone loves the beautiful Princess and there has never been any disturbance in the great Throne Room. All they do is look fierce and keep quiet until the Royal Audience is finished and the people leave. Of course no one would ever be naughty while the huge Lion and Tiger sat beside the throne, but the people of Oz are rarely naughty. So Ozma´s big guards are more decorative than useful, and the beasts know that fact more than anyone else. One day, after everybody had left the Throne Room except the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger, the Lion yawned and said to his friend: “I´m getting tired of this job. No one is afraid of us and no one pays any attention to us.” “That is true, “ replied the big Tiger, purring softly. “We should be in the thick jungles where we were born, instead of trying to protect Ozma when she needs no protection. And I´m very hungry all the time. “ “You have enough to eat, I´m sure, “ said the Lion, moving his tail slowly back and forth. “Enough, perhaps; but not the kind of food I want, “ answered the Tiger. “What I´m hungry for is children. If I ran after children, the people of Oz would fear me and I´d become more important.” “True, “ agreed the Lion. “People would be scared if you ate one child. But my claws are as sharp as needles and as strong as metal, and my teeth are very sharp. If I ate a man, there

would be wild excitement in the Emerald City and the people would fall on their knees and beg me for mercy. That would make me very important.” “After you had eaten the person, what would you do next?” asked the Tiger sleepily. “Then I would roar so loudly it would shake the earth. Then I would run to the jungle and hide before anyone could attack me or punish me for what I had done.” “I see,” nodded the Tiger. “You really are a coward.” “Well, yes. That is why I am called the Cowardly Lion. That is why I have always been so tame and peaceful. But I am bored of being tame, and it would be fun to cause some excitement and show people what a terrible beast I really am.”
