C. REPORTS C.1. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS C.1.1. II. C.1.2. Chapter Project No. 2 (Abstract) This is the abstract for October project that will be done by YES Alumni in cooperation with AFS and JENESYS Returnees and Volunteers. ABSTRACT : Earth relies on Natural Greenhouse Gases to keep warm to support life. Now, the earth is dying from global warming because of rapidly rising temperature caused by too much CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) in the Atmosphere. it takes : up to 12 years for Cigarette butts to biodegrade .......10-12 years for plastic bags to biodegrade .......100 years for Styrofoam cups to biodegrade .......50-100 years for aluminum and tin cans to biodegrade .......450 years for soda cans plastic carriers to biodegrade .......500-800 years for diapers & sanitary pads to biodegrade 3 R's REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE!!! PLANT A TREE! Half of the world's forests have already been cleared or burned, and 80% of the remaining have been seriously degraded. HELP REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING! Planting a tree is the most effective and one of the CHEAPEST ways for you to help balance the CO2 you generate daily. WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT A TREE??!! A single tree absorbs about 1 ton of CO2 during its lifetime, provides shade and releases water vapour, lowering air temperature and cooling the earth’s surface. Every tree reduces the greenhouse effect by giving off oxygen during photosynthesis and absorbing up to 60% of CO2 and other air pollutants. EVERY TREE PROVIDES OXYGEN ENOUGH FOR 3 PEOPLE TO BREATHE. A tree reduces topsoil erosion by capturing rainfall in its crown to slow down water run-off. TREES IN FORESTS STORE 50% of THE WORLD'S CARBON. Trees also reduce 50% of urban noise pollution by acting as a buffer. WHY GO GREEN ?!?!?!?! Everything we do everyday has an impact on the planet (Raise your hand if you agree!!) Your choices will help protect or even destroy the earth... 12
Make a POSITIVE impact and ADOPT a Greener Lifestyle TAKE ACTION now to REDUCE excess release of greenhouse gases to slow this damn global warming down... Plant Trees, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Save Water... THE EARTH IS DYING!! Encourage Others... YOU CAN HELP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! Sources of Funding The fundraising committee will contact several of our local partners such as local companies, organizations and schools. We also would like to propose a proposal to the local government. And communicate with Bina Antarbudaya pusat so we could get help in promoting this project. Volunteer Resources All YES Alumni from Chapter Samarinda, AFS Returnees, JENESYS Returnees and other volunteers that often help our program will be involved in this project. We also invite student council (OSIS) member from all across Samarinda High School to support and participate in this project.

C.1.3. Chapter Project No. 3 (Abstract) This is the abstract for February project 2011 that will be done by YES Alumni in cooperation with AFS and JENESYS Returnees and Volunteers.
ABSTRACT : In order to build a mutual understanding between youth and the world around them, the importance of knowing and knowledge above all aspects should be conducted. These knowing and knowledge will include cultures, differences, similarities, tolerance, lifestyle, and most importantly to find the identity of their own nationality. Bina Antarbudaya Chapter Samarinda, with IYAA Programs, plan to held an English FUN Camp that will involve Youths (especially Junior High School Students), Adults, Seniors, and also to call for all Returnees and Volunteers to gather in this one unforgettable moment packed with excitement and entertainment throughout the event. Possibly, we will conduct a 3 days and 2 nights camp which will cover some of this activities : -
Introduction of Bina Antarbudaya and its Programs (including IYAA) Learn English with FUN! (Fantastic, Unique and Never say “bored!”) Knowing and Knowledge about the World Inside and Outside of yourself (this is actually a reflection and evaluation of what the participants have done in their life) An Adventure to Seek for the Treasures Motivation games based on teamwork Sports Leadership in theory and practical Sillaturrahmi between Returnees and Volunteers
Sources of Funding The fundraising committee will contact several of our local partners such as local companies, organizations and schools. C.1.4. Independent Projects Done by Individual Alumni Community Service Report By : Cut Whuny Atmaidha – YP’ 2009-2010 When I was in Alma, Georgia, I went to Bacon County High School. I decided to join in HOSA which stands for Health Occupation Students of America. There were a lot of things that gave positive benefits which had held by HOSA. One of the activities was Donate Blood for Haiti. After the earthquake in Haiti that had shocked the whole world, American Red Cross gave brochure to every school in United State to tell everyone that American Red Cross needed some blood to be donated to the victims in Haiti. I was planning to donate my blood, but because I was an exchange student from overseas, I could not donate my blood for some reason. I tried to be a volunteer even though I could not donate blood. My friends and I asked everyone who was already 16 to participate in that event. In two weeks, we collected 200 names (from students, teachers, staffs, parents) that had a willing to donate. I stayed in the booth until the third period and I saw there were some people still came. I was glad, even though I could not donate blood, I could participate with American Red Cross’ event. Just by volunteering I could feel the excitement of the donators who really loved to share their blood to the victims in Haiti. In other things, I made new friends and new experience.

Community Service Report By : Jeanny Dwi Adriyanti – YP’ 2009-2010 There is one thing that I've learned from USA that could make all countries always fine if they're all doing it. Community Service. That's it. I love that program, all people work together for free to build their country, no matter if they're young or old. I did some community services when I was in USA. My placement was in Humboldt County, California. A lot of people said to me that California is a progressive state. I feel so lucky because my placement was sort of community place, then all people know each other and help each other. They have a lot of choices for people who want to do community services. I did volunteering with AFS chapter to do sorting in Food bank. I did it with AFS students in my local chapter. It was so amazing, that was the biggest event they always have for every year. All people will put their foods in front of their house and the post office people will take them to Food Bank. Or people can give the foods to the post office then the people there will deliver to Food Bank. It was fun, the people there were really helpful and they taught us how to sort the foods and classified them by the type. And then they will give the people who really need the foods. Now I know why I never seen hunger in there. We worked together and smile together. And my other community service was when I went to New Orleans with my school group. We built house for 4 days in New Orleans, it's the are where a lot of houses got damages after Hurricane Katrina on 2005. We worked with “Habitat for Humanity”, it's a non profit organization who works for buildings. We were about 36 people, and we did the jobs that they thought we could do it. Even the job felt so hard, but because we were all doing it together, we never felt tired or fed up of all those jobs. We knew it was hard, but it's fine. Because we built house for helping people to have home. Now I know why it is not impossible to say “We Can Do It”.

C.3.2. Cut Whuny Atmaidha – YP’ 2009-2010 I am grateful to God because of Him, I am still here to write all these stuffs. I could not believe that finally I am home again after a year I passed by staying in United States. I did not really know what America was, but I learned things one by one while I was there. I did everything I never done before such as HOMECOMING, PROM NITE, DANCE, THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, and so on. Those cool activities made my year became more awesome just by participating in it. Of course all those stuffs would not be that cool without FRIENDS. While I was there, I tried to make new friend every single day. Students in my host school (Bacon County High School) were not that many, so it was not that hard to get new friend. And finally, I almost knew everyone. People in my school were so nice and full of surprise. For example was when I turned 17 th years old. I did not expect to have party even cake. But, that day my friends gave me surprise party in one of my classes. They brought cakes, cookies, chips, cokes and any snacks that they made. I was so speechless. I did not know what to say. It was the first surprise party I have ever had. Another surprise party was one day before I finished my school in BCHS. My friends bought two cakes and they put ‘WE LOVE YOU CUT’ on the top of the cakes. I could not hold my tears. I was so sad that I had to leave them right after I was really close with them. They gave me really big sign from every body in school. Actually it was my plan to collect all the signs but my friends already did it to me without me knew it. I am so GRATEFUL for having some friends just like them. They always made my days.

C.3.3. Jeanny Dwi Adriyanti – YP’ 2009-2010 I'm in Indonesia again… I felt so sad when I know I'm back to my country and be far away from my host family, my host school, and my friends. They all just great. Beside that, I'm also feel happy because I can meet my family again, and because I missed my lovely country so much. Especially the culture and the people in Indonesia. At the beginning when I arrived in Jakarta I was so shocked because the temperature was so hot and my body was always sweat. It's really different with USA that I never got sweat easily like that. But, the heat and the sweat were nothing because I found my happiness with my other 97 Indonesian friends who were also had 1 year experience in USA. Even I was still sad because my amazing friend, Alviona Reksa still had to stay in New Hampshire, USA. We miss her so much. I got pressure here were with the class at school. Because It's so much harder than the class in USA. I feel depressed and frustrated with the lessons at school, my brain is squeezed by Math, Physic, Chemistry, and Biology from Monday to Saturday. It gives me concerns about the National exam and my college in the future. Beside that , after I got back from US I feel that I have a huge responsibility as an Indonesian Student who had been trusted to go to US and came back for Indonesia. And it keeps remind me to do something for Indonesia, nation, and the people around. Even until today, I haven't done any of those because I'm still having pressure about the lessons at school, but I believe InshaAllah I can make all the plans be reliable. The point of all is, came back from US makes me think critically and learn how to find out the price of time. I had an experience for 1 year in US and I achieved a lot of achivements, and now I've been living in Indonesia for 18 years and would be more then I MUST achieved more than I did in that 1 year. Thank you AFS! Before My Departure To U.S … I was so small. I had no courageous or plan on my departure to US. A lot of comments came into my brain and my perspectives so then I didn't have my real feeling. I was so sad because I didn't want to be away from my family, because I've never been far away from my parent. And I never go abroad before, so I felt nervous. Beside that, some people frightened me by giving negative informations about west country. I felt frustrated and depressed, because I was still

sad to think of being far away from my family and some people put more burden on my shoulder to carry on. They said US is terrorist, they said Moslem is still the target after 9/11, they said a lot of porks everywhere, they said alcohol is around. I hate when people tried to advice me with unknowledgeable information. That's what I felt. Sometimes people suggested me to quit from the program. I was almost doing it, but I thought it's silly to quit from the program after all my sacrifices for 2 years. Because honestly I didn't really have a big ambition to go to United States of America. I did'n't have any idea of that. But I could see the hope from my parent. They said, thousands, or maybe millions Indonesian students compete to get this opportunity. I didn't have word “no” at that time. I was just empty glass and people put any kind of liquid on me. I tried to find out more about the program. And I found that the goal of this program are bridge understanding between Muslim countries and West Country and bringing peace. How beautiful is the Vission and Mission from this program. Then from my first step in the airplane, I was just keep telling to my self that I came to US for my family, Indonesia, and PEACE. That's it. Thank you!

D. FUTURE PROGRAMS AND SUGGESTIONS Bina Antarbudaya Chapter Samarinda in association with IYAA would like to suggest some points that might be useful for the improvement of IYAA :
Make YES Alumni National Workshop and Training as Annual General Meeting that will choose the new Leader of IYAA each year. Expand the structure of IYAA in chapter area, such as adding the Vice Coordinator for Project (or Project Supervisor) and Vice Coordinator for Administration and Membership Management. Conduct a Major National Community Service event that will involve all chapters as the committee. Create a recommendation to the government (Rekomendasi Kebijakan) on any aspects (especially Education) to emphasize them that we also want to contribute a better understanding for our nation. So far, (unless from Kak Sari and Kak Diar through our Facebook Group) there is no communication among the committee (especially between the Core Committee and Chapter Coordinators), there is no internal control, we just have to submit the report immediately without being assisted throughout the periods. Hopefully, for the next quarter, the Core Committee can be more active to control their member, (just one simple question on “how is it going there? Do you need some help? What can we prepare for your project over there?”). Intensive digital meeting (via Skype for example) for all the committee to evaluate and plan the programs. Maybe every 3 months will be enough. Last but not the least, If you want us to send our report, we also want you to send us the comments or feedbacks after you evaluate this report. We really appreciate whatever statement that you put to this report. Thank you very much for your kind attention. See you at the next National Workshop and Training!!
